Breaking News out of the capital: a group of military officers led by Air Force Colonel Neils Akker stormed the parliament building today and installed themselves as the rulers of the nation. For the last few years, Saridan has struggled with a lack of government and there have been numerous rumors of military coups. In a speech, Col. Akker said “You deserve better. We will lead Saridan to greatness, and no one will stop us. God bless Saridan.” The new junta is expected to call elections to reaffirm support for their new political movement, the People’s Patriotic League (MPL).

Government Announce Construction of New 'Werkerskatedraal'

Image
One of the proposals under consideration for the Werkerskatedraal

Saridan's new Hosian-Socialist government today unveiled plans for the construction of a new Workers' Cathedral (Werkerskatedraal) in Stadheilige, Tasselstaat. The Cathedral, which currently has a budget of 30 billion SAR, shall inspire and spread the message of Hosian-Socialism throughout Sardian and beyond. The Werkerskatedraal shall also cement the rebranding of Stadheilige, formerly Skedevelde, as a holy city and the birth place of the movement. Announcing the project, President Arjen Van Kouwen stated,
Remember the words, "Praise him—he is the Lord, and you have seen with your own eyes the great and astounding things that he has done for you." Our Werkerskatedraal shall be the greatest testament to the power of the Lord that Terra has ever witnessed. It shall be a great spiritual, artistic and political undertaking for our nation. The Cathedral shall be a place of worship, honour, dignity and strength. It shall serve all equally and shall be a labour of love from our people to the Almighty.

Hosian-Socialism, whose message shall be central to the purpose of the building, states that market capitalism is the source not only of material inequality, but also spiritual atrophy. Good people are pushed by capitalism not into the arms of the Lord, nor to the virtues of peace and tolerance, but instead towards greed and division. Taking "Love thy neighbour as thyself" as their guiding principle, Hosian-Socialists therefore believe that Hosian scripture synthesised with socialism must be at the heart of the state in order that the full economic and spiritual potential of the workers can achieved.

Critics however have slammed the "eye watering" cost of the project and questioned the need for the public purse to finance the construction of religious buildings.

Republic of Saridan to Join Seleyan Union

• Saridan to end decades international isolation
• Beskermer Van Kouwen submits application paving way for accession to SU
• Tells nation "We must join together with our brothers and sisters across the continent."

Image

The government of Sardian today formally announced its intention to join the Seleyan Union, ending a period of international isolation lasting nearly a century. Following constructive discussions with the SU, the Ministry of Finance announced that it had undertaken a number of commitments in policy areas which are of high relevance for a smooth transition to full accession and that all necessary preparations had been made accordingly. The formal ratification of the Treaty of the Seleyan Union by the Konklave van die Volk shall occur in October and membership achieved soon after.

Beskermer Van Kouwen hailed the move as both an economic boon for workers, many of whom are only just beginning to see their wages rise after a decade of government instability, and a chance for Saridan to stand taller on the international stage.
We must join together with our brothers and sisters across the continent, for any good Hosian-Socialist will tell you how good and pleasant it is when we can dwell in unity! For peace, development and mutual prosperity it is important that the nations of Seleya bond together.

Asked whether the Union, which has been described as a crumbling relic, is still relevant in the modern age, Van Kouwen answered,
Peace and prosperity are always relevant, and if there are challenges we face them together. Is the SU all that it could be? No. But that means we should find more common ground and make more effort to work together. Sardian cannot just stand carping from the sidelines. And if we work together there is no telling what we can achieve.

News in Brief

Eerste Minister Pieter Klaassen Lays Foundation Stone as Werkerskatedraal Construction Begins

Construction on the new Werkerskatedraal in Stadheilige has begun with 25,000 volunteers signed up to help participate on the project. Eerste Minister Pieter Klaassen was on site the lay the foundation stone and wished all participating in the project the best of luck. Eerste Minister Klaassen said,
It is a great thing we are doing for Saridan and the Lord. The love and devotion which each of the thousands of volunteers are showing is inspirational and shall only make our Werkerskatedraal more of a success.

Critics have questioned the wisdom of using volunteers on a complex large scale building project.

Saridan Returns to Growth After Agricultural Reforms Fiasco

Economic results for 4615 show that Saridan's economy grew by 6.5% over the 12 month period, bouncing back from the -3.3% fall experienced in 4614. The government's disastrous implementation of collectivised agricultural policies, which saw new state farms go without farming equipment and expertise for months at a time, wiped billions from Saridan's GDP. Officials at the Ministry of Agriculture are however confident that all these issues have been resolved and that food production is secure in both the short and long term.
This year's rise was attributed largely to increased government spending, particularly on defence, education and infrastructure improvements required to secure SU membership, as well as on the construction of the new Werkerskatedraal.

Falls in consumption and flat lining private investment however exposed underlying concerns about Saridan's long term performance. Treasury officials admitted the fall in consumer spending was disappointing, but pointed to new legislation increasing job security and reducing taxes for low income workers as indicators that consumer confidence will rise towards from 4616 and beyond.

Sardian's Hosian-Socialists form Seleyan Progressive Alliance to challenge the dominance of the centre- right in Seleyan Union

Saridan's governing party has announced the formation of a new centre-left grouping in the Seleyan Union Assembly, which it hopes will effect change across the continent. The grouping, which has already received support from political parties in Lodamun and Tukarali, will likely be one of the largest in the Assembly in the next legislative sitting.

Foreign Minister Roelof van der Vaart said,
We believe that the progressive parties of Seleya should work together in the spirit of peace, solidarity and equality to help make our continent a better place. The Seleyan Union has for too long has been dominated by the conservative Seleyan People's Party, led principally by Valruzia, with a muted progressive voice. This is why we have created the Seleyan Progressive Alliance, an organisation for progressive parties from across Seleya to work together to help foster a fairer, more equal Seleya and stand up for working families across the continent.

It is open to all parties of the left and centre-left who stand for an inclusive Seleya based on the principles of freedom, equality, solidarity, diversity and fairness. Join us.

October 7th, 4619
New party forms in protest of hybrid Hosian Socialist regime
After demonstrations in Bokhoring, in Boerestaat, and to some degree the capital, Koeistad, a progressive party has formed in protest to the Hosian Socialists.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After peaceful protests against what some progressives called a regime destined to ingrain church with state, their efforts received a significant boon, with the joining of local representative Willem van Bogge, who'd been an independent politician in the time since the Hosian Socialists had gained power. Furthermore, their efforts became national attention when van Bogge rallied protesters around the State House of Boerestaat, in it's capital of Bokhoring, and proclaimed the Progresiewe Party, or Progressive Party. A broad coalition of progressives, social democrats, and to some degree, a small number of libertarians, the party is partially against the policies of the Hosian Socialists.

"Whilst there are some elements of their policy that we admire, it is the execution where they fall flat," van Bogge stated to protesters in Bokhoring. "Leaning towards the intention of combining church and state, no matter which side of the political spectrum, is dangerous to our already slippery democracy—One that has only been made unpredictable due to them." A response from Koeistad was mute, to say the least, save for the peaceful dispersing of protesters within the capital city, which fellow protesters have chalked up as a defeat in their cause. Regardless, van Bogge has vowed to keep fighting, and propose legislation in defense of democracy, and eventually, when the current situation cools down, begin implementing it's policy proposals, that he revealed during his founding speech of the Progressive Party.

Speaking candidly to reporters, Willem van Bogge expressed the formation of the Progressive Party as a move of protest—One for a better democracy for Saridani citizens in the near future.

Outrage sparks protests over Hosian-Socialist response to Progressive Party's legislation
Upon striking down a hefty bill introduced by the Progresiewe Party aimed at overhauling ecological and agricultural laws, many center-left protesters have taken to the streets of Koeistad, demonstrating all across the city.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What initially began as outrage over the ruling Hosian-Socialists's stonewalling of a major bill aimed at reforming ecological and agricultural laws within Saridan has ballooned into wide reaching anti-government protests, mainly centered around the capital, Koeistad. Marching down the streets, chanting various mantras, the protesters are mainly composed of pro-capitalist, alongside progressive and some socially liberal political groups. Ranging anywhere from student organizations to local political parties, the crowds have effectively slowed parts of Koeistad to a crawl, with Parliament Hall, the seat of the Conclave of the People, being especially affected.

Among the protesters was once more, like that fateful day three years ago, the Progressive Party's National Committee Chairman, Willem van Bogge. Speaking directly to the crowds, flanked by a couple members of the Conclave, he gave a speech criticizing the recent actions of the Hosian-Socialists, and warned that the country was once more "on the knife's edge" of remaining a democracy or crumbling into a dictatorship. "The Hosian-Socialists attack us directly for our efforts at regulating laws which so desperately need attention. Is this not a direct contradiction of the word of Eliyahu? I'm not exactly a religious man personally, but everyone brushes up on the Katub at some point in their lives, and nowhere does it mention attacking a people for holding differing ideas—Instead, it cultivates a mindset of understanding, reconciliation, and cooperation. It's very easy to see that the Hosian-Socialists, like more of their ilk, do not care about the word of Eliyahu, nor the people."

Upon the closing of his speech, the massive throngs of protesters outside Parliament Hall erupted into cheers, scattered applause, and once the two had died down, a sudden chant appeared—"We want federalization!" The chant quickly gained steam, and soon enough received the backing of van Bogge, alongside the rest of the Progressive Party. Eventually, flags were waved from the tight hands of the crowd—All of them a single, unique flag, based off of the current one for Koeistad itself. When asked by our field reporter as to what exactly it represented, a student who was seen waving it before the steps of Parliament Hall responded: "This flag represents our movement which, already, is growing like wildfire. Everything we're out here protesting for is represented upon this flag. We want federalization, and a stronger democracy free of the combination of church and state. Saridan must be a federation, one of equals!"

The response from the ruling Hosian-Socialists, as well as Beskermer Klaassen?

Dead silence.
