Vascania beat Mordusia by six wickets at Randworth Cricket Ground to win their first T20 World Cup. In a close final, Sumit Talavalakar’s unbeaten 84 was decisive as his side chased down 160 against the hosts. Vascania become only the third team to win the world’s premier T20 trophy. Mordusia suffer a heart-breaking second final defeat on home soil, after losing in the same ground to Luthori in 5331.
The eighth edition of the T20 World Cup began with a match between the same sides less than four weeks ago. On that occasion, the host country were victorious by 14 runs against a Vascanian team that did not include captain M. Radchakan. Both teams emerged from the group stage without any scares though. The major story was a historically poor performance by the Saridani team, who failed to win a single game.
Luthori and Tropica both finished on nine points in the other group. Luthori won the group on net run rate. The tournament’s most shocking result happened on the second day. An inspired Baltusian team beat Malivia by five wickets. Baltusia’s Luthori-born captain Edwin Hudson was player of the match. Rain denied the Malivian team the chance to avenge their defeat a week later.
Mordusia comfortably beat a disappointing Tropica in the first semi-final. A below-par total of 116 was chased down in less than 17 overs. The second semi-final was a fiercer contest. Commentator Ranjan Mudaliyar described it as a “historic moment” as Vascania defended a total of 137 to eliminate Luthori. By winning, the Vascanian side guaranteed there would be a new world champion for the first time in over four decades.
In the final, a strong opening partnership from Alexander Wood and Veer Padagavakar helped Mordusia hit 50 off only 24 balls. Radchakan’s strong bowling allowed Vascania to rebuild though. Mordusia eventually ended their innings 159-6. Talavalakar was brought to the crease earlier than he would have hoped with Vascania 16-1. Despite regular wickets falling, he ran hard to keep his side in the match. In the end, a boundary with the first ball of the final over brought the tournament to a conclusion.
Over the past three weeks, international 20-over cricket has changed. Vascania have broken the stranglehold on this competition established by Luthori and Saridan over half a century. Despite losing in the final once again, Mordusia have played their role too. Tonight’s final broke television viewership records for a domestic sporting event. The impact will be felt beyond this tournament.
