Archduke To Appoint Ambassador to the UNT

BAROVIA CITY, Vorona-In a press confrence this afternoon, Archduke Valdemar announced on behalf of the Voronan Monarchist Movement Executive Committee that the new Voronan ambassador to the UNT is Deupty Minister of Foriegn Affairs, Christa Baggesen. Mrs. Baggesen is of Doron descent and is fluent in Doron, Dundorfian and English.

Before the collapse of the only opposition party in the National Assembly, several key members of the Union Party were vocal about the government's lack of intrest in foriegn affairs. The Archduke, who had just been told the Vorona is a member of the UNT Security Council, took the oppurtunity to show his subjects and colleauges that he had Terra's and Vorona's intrests at heart.

There is some controversy surrounding Mrs. Baggesen, including the fact that she was a memeber for three years of the fascist and racist Dfstandan Angelncynn Thule Geférrǽden party. However, after she married her husband, Herbert Baggesen (who owns a plumbing business) she became a member of the New National Fascist Party and then finally, the Voronan Monarchist Movement. During the press confrence, Archduke Valdemar answered questions regarding Mrs. Baggesen's ability to cope with the pressures and stresses of being an ambassador:

"I think she's very capable, or else I wouldn't have picked her. She represents the people of Vorona well, and will make their voices heard thorughout the international community, while at the same time, listening to the concerns of the international community regarding Vorona and her politics and policies. Mrs. Baggesen also has many years of experience in the field of foriegn affairs and is the best candidate for the job. I believe that she will change the way that many outsiders see Vorona and her culture, people and politics."

Soon after the press confrence, the National Assembly unanimously voted in favor of her appointment to the important job.

Archduke Condems Nova Terra

DIPLEY, VORONA-The archduke, while on a visit to several newly installed factories (installed with help from the government of Greater Hulstria) was given a briefing by the Voronan Intelligence Service on the new organization called Nova Terra. The Archduke quickly prepared a statement of condemnation, which was delivered by his fiancee and press secretary, Margerethe von Pulund.

Image
Margerethe von Pulund delivering the Archduke's anti-Nova Terra statement

"The Royal Government and people of the Archduchy of Vorona condem the actions of Nova Terra, and pledge our help and trust to all nations affected by these power-hungry people. They pervert Terra with their ideas of conquest and endless war. The cries of children and dying mothers are music to their ears. We cannot, I repeat, we cannot allow such evil to spread throughout the world. Therefore, at the next meeting of the United Nations of Terra, Ambassador Christa Baggesen will be proposing a bill which would openly condem the self-serving members of Nova Terra."

When asked to put the archduke's statement into one sentence or less, Countess von Pululund replied "Nova Terra must go."

Even though the Archduchy of Vorona is not directley affected by the organization of Nova Terra, the archduke apparentley felt the need to speak out against unprovoked and needless war. In a poll conducted by the Vorona Post-Gazette, only 37% of all Voronans know about the organization of Nova Terra. However, in the same poll, 79% of all Voronans said that if the archduke was against it, then they were too. The leaders and members of Nova Terra now know that they have no friend on the island of Vorona, and that the Royal Government of Archduke Valdemar are against them, and that in the end, they will lose.

Voronan Monarchist Movement Wins Elections

HONEY CREEK, VORONA-After the very last voting station here in Honey Creek was closed at 9:30 PM, the votes were counted up, via computer. The total equalled 748 seats in the National Assembly for the VMM, while the Technological Advancement Party gained 2 seats. The People's Selucian Party won no seats, but did endorse the VMM in the election for Lord Regent, which was won by Klaus Svenson, the mayor of Three Bridges in Barovia.

Above: The Post-Gazette posts the results from the election

Mr. Svensen, during his meeting with the Archduke, told reporters that "he worked forward to working with the archduke and that he was thankful to the people of Vorona, who overwhelmingly voted in favor the monarchy." However, some in the VMM were not sure that Mr. Svensen was the way to go. Dr. Fredrick Jones, Minister of Food and Agriculture, in a letter to the Post-Gazette, said that "Mr. Svensen was too inexperienced for such an important role in Voronan politics. We cannot trust an incapable man to represent our beloved monarch and the people of Vorona in the ring of international politics. The Voronan Monarchist Movement Executive Committee should have chosen someone with more experience, such as Royal Chancellor Josef von Pulund, who happens to the be father-in-law of the archduke."

Still, there is agreement within the ranks of Voronan politicans that Mr. Svensen will most likley steer Voronan politics in the right direction, away from the fascism of the past rulers, such as the Anglo-Delterian extremists or the racist New National Fascist Party.

The archduke invited the Lord Regent to Schloss von Barovia where he asked Mr. Svensen to re-establish the royal government and re-convine the Cabinet (also known as the Royal Advisory Board.)

The Varyag Incident

BAROVIA CITY, VORONA-News about a Nova Terra ship accidentaly shot by a Lodamese ship patrolling international waters and inspecting passing ships recentley reached the public of Vorona. The Royal Advisory Board had an emergency meeting, at 4 AM local time, to discuss the Varyag Incident, as it is being called by the international press. Indeed, the events leading up to the incident and surrouding the controvesial move by Lodamese ships to patrol international waters, are complicated and not very clear. It is clear, however, that the international community is split between supporting Nova Terra, a violent and extremist organizaion, or the Lodamese ships, who violated international law, as laid down by the Law of the Sea treaty.

"The Royal Government of Vorona, under the leadership of Archduke Valdemar and Lord Regent Klaus Svensen fully support the people and government of Lodamon, and condem the organization of Nova Terra, and it's outcry against this incident. The reason the ship was fired upon, was that it failed to stop. The reason the Lodamese ships were there in the first place was to combat the violent and militant attitude displayed by the leadership of Nova Terra. Terra is fine just the way it is, and supporting needless war and destruction."

The above was an excerpt from a short speech given by Lord Regent Klaus Svensen. Many in Vorona feel that this could be the first event in the regency of Mr. Svensen and could display his ability to work under pressure. An e-mail was sent to the archduke's office, however, no response has been given at this time. A short statement from the office of the Royal Chancellor was sent to the Post-Gazette however:

"The statement given by the Lord Regent contains the views of the Lord Regent and not the views of the Royal Government and the archduke. The archduke, however, is against the militant attitude displayed by the leadership of Nova Terra. The archduke has expressed that if Nova Terra tried to achieve their means through peaceful and diplomatic channels, instead of violence and war. However, I feel that they will not. I hope that they remember that they have no friends in Vorona. Our land will stay ours."

Special Edition: Royal Wedding

BAROVIA CITY, VORONA-This is a special edition of the Vorona Post-Gazette, and will cover, exclusivley, the marriage between the Archduke, and his fiancee, Countess Margerethe von Pulund. Earlier today, Ms. Suzanna Bornheim, a reporter from the Department of Royal and Governmental Affairs sat down with the Archduke's personal secretary, Mr. Johannes Schmidt.

SM: To start with, what is the story behind the marriage of the Archduke and Countess von Pulund?

JS: Well, the Archduke had been looking for a sutible bride for many years. He was invited to a party, where he met the Countess, and they almost immediatley began courting. The Archduke proposed to the Countess, and Earl Josef von Pulund gave his consent for the marriage to take place.

SM: There is some talk about the fact that the Countess is almost twenty years younger then him. Do you see any problem with that?

JS: No, I see no problem with the age difference. In fact, I believe that the age difference will bring them closer together, and hopefully will bring the Voronan people closer to their monarchs.

SM: Now to get stray away from the subject, what is your view on current international politics?

JS: My view? Well, I'll just say that hopefully everyone makes the right choices, and that peace and prosperity will reign over Terra again, instead of fear and petty politics.

SM: So...you're avoiding my question?

JS: Absolutley.

The Voronan people were enthusiastic over the fact that their beloved monarch was finally getting married. The Office of the Royal Chancellor and the mail office at Schloss von Barovia recieved a combined total of 1.5 million letters, while the computer server at the National Assembly crashed, due to the fact that all 750 delegates, their aides, staff and the administrative staff were all sending e-mails to the Archduke. It's one week later, and the server is still out of order.

Hulstrian Delegation Arrives in Vorona

BARVOVIA CITY, VORONA-When the Hulstrian delegation arrived in Barovia City International Airport, they didn't know what to expect. What they didn't expect was a crowd numbering around 150,000 to greet them, sing patriotic songs and wave flags.

Image
Voronan eagerly awaiting the Governor-General's plane, pass the time with "the wave."

The delegation was zipped to Schloss von Barovia, the private estate of the Archduke, where they will have a series of meetings regarding Voronan economics and Vorona's diplomatic place in the world. The Governor-General's eagerly expected speech is tomorrow, and then they will fly to Dipley to inspect factories built and financed by the Hulstrian government. We sent a telephone call to the Hulstrian embassy in Barovia City, however, they did not respond. The conferences are expected to greatly help the sagging economy of Vorona. The lack of another royal, however, is greatley noted. The Hulstrian Emporer, who is in his "golden years" and rather shy, decided not to attend the conference.

The Archduke, Archduchess and their daughter, met the delegation at the gate of Schloss von Barovia. The Archduke, reportetly, demands on speaking only Dundorfian to the Hulstiran delegation, even though most of the delegation's members are fluent in English. However, even though related linguistically, Hulstiran speakers have adopted a different accent and even different words, from standard Dundorfian or the Voronan dialect Voronadutsch. An international incident, although not probable, could happen due to the langauge and culture differences. However, the delegation and the Archduke are all educated, and therefore knowledgable about the cultures of the nations of the world.

Royal Chancellor Dies, Nation Thrown Into Grief

PULUND PALACE, VORONA-Earlier yesturday morning, Earl Josef von Pulund, Royal Chancellor of the Royal Advisory Board and Member of the Voronan Order of the Golden Sun died earlier this morning in his bed, at his residence, Pulund Palace in the countryside outside Dipley. Doctors rushed to the scene after a maid found him unconsious, where later, he was found to in fact be dead. However, he was only formally pronounced dead this morning. The cause of death seems to be heart attack, although an advanced case of lung cancer was found. The fact that he died either by heart attack or lung cancer didn't suprise the doctors, becasue the Earl was a known chain-smoker and lover of chocolates, cakes and pasteries.

Royal Chancellor Earl Josef von Pulund, VGS

Earl von Pulund was instumental in re-creating the monarchy in Vorona. Under his leadership the Voronan Monarchist Movement was able to gain popularity with the Voronan population, and his leadership which allowed the monarchy to take control, instead of the various fascist parties that had so brutally ruled Vorona before. The Earl was also known as a lover of the arts and commissioned several paintings from various local artists, which still hang in his palace. However, the most important thing the Earl did for Vorona was that he was a tireless civil servant. The Earl served as Royal Chancellor on the Royal Advisory Board for almost 14 years. The Earl also taught Political Science at the National University, and is credited with creating and teaching an entire generation of Voronan diplomats, politicians and statesmen.

The Earl is survived by his daughter, the Archduchess Margerethe. His wife, Katharinia, died several years ago in a tragic fire. His entire estate, including stocks, real estate, and bank accounts is worth almost an amazing 100,000,000 Lodamon Dollars. It will all go to the Archduchess and Princess Christa, the only child of the Archduke and Archduchess, and the sole heir to the Voronan throne.

Opposition Parties Emerge, VMM Creates New Cabinet

BAROVIA CITY, VORONA-Yearlier this year two opposition parties to the VMM emerged into the Voronan political landscape. These two parties are the Republican Populist Party, a liberal and socialist group and the Sovremennye Korporacija Vorona, a Voronan corporation's lobby group, who push for greater corporation rights. After a long rule by the VMM alone, the formation of opposition parties in Vorona was a suprise to many, but not concern. Indeed, the Archduke commented that he "was looking forward to working the various party members from the honorable opposition parties." In a recent poll on voronapost-gazette.com, almost 73% of Voronans said that the oppositions were good for Vorona, Voronan politics and Voronan economics.

In other news, famous poet Johan Wolfgang von Gothe was named as the Royal Poet of Vorona and will recieve a yearly stipend to continue creating beautiful works of literature. Even though most of Vorona is of Dorona descent, many of the cultural achievements throughout recent Voronan history have been by Barovians. However, von Gothe has announced that he plans to write an entire play in Doron.

The Archduke, in a press release, commented on several changes in the Voronan military, such as the addition of a special forces unit (Kampenkorps), an intelliegence agency (the Voronan Intelligence Service) and the Voronan Military Police. He said that all of these new units would increase the safety of Vorona. The Kampenkorps will be under the control of the Ministry of Defense, while the Voronan Intelliegence Service will be under the control of the Ministry of Foriegn Affairs. The Military Police are under joint control between the Ministries of Interior and Defense.

Historic Elections held in Vorona
First opposition Assemblymen are seated

December 15th, 2748, a day that shall go down in the history books. For this was the day, that the monarchy acceded to long-held demand of the people, to hold multi-party parliamentary elections. The elections came off without a hitch, with most in the international community describing the elections as “free and fair”. Of the opposition parties, two managed to win seats, the RPP, which won 77, and the SKV, which won 46.

The campaign was an exciting one for Voronans, as the opposition parties crafted platforms and campaigns to allow them to win seats. The RPP, or Republican Populist Party, a semi-revolutionary, liberal-socialist, republican party, entitled its campaign “Dare to question”. This was in reference to the fact that the party questions almost all the elements of Voronan society, and seeks to overturn them. As party leader George Marcus said when describing the title “We are essentially a group of people who dare to question the “facts” of our society. We ask why the monarch deserves his power, what makes him and his family more special than the rest of us? Why the peasant has to work so hard for so little, whilst the noblemen can laze around smoking cigars and having balls, and still have everything, because their ‘blood’ is better. Why our local clergymen tells us that to be good Christians we have to accept these facts. We do not accept these facts, we dare to question why things must be this way.” The SKV ran on a campaign entitled “A Prosperous Vorona”. They claimed that only they could bring Vorona into the modern age, fix its economy, and turn it into a prosperous nation. They spoke of one of the greatest “public-private partnerships” that would ever be known to man. The VMM ran a rather low key campaign, stressing stability, continuity, and traditional, conservative values.

Perhaps a surprising fact of the elections was the contrast between east and west. In the western county of Vojnovy Pokrik, opposition candidates were often mocked and ridiculed. On election day, only around 2.5% of the electorate in the west opted for an opposition party. The RPP managed to collect a tiny handful of seats, and the SKV gained no seats whatsoever. This can largely be put down to the fact that the west is relatively prosperous and industrialized, and therefore most of the people there feel that the monarchy is working for them. Contrast this with our poorer, agrarian, eastern country of Barovia, where peasants resent and are beholden to their landowners. Many peasants supported the RPP because of its anti-aristocrat, anti-landowner message. They felt it was for smallholders and peasants like them, and would help them throw off their landlords and gain representation for themselves. Many people also voted for the SKV because they felt beholden and indebted to its large agricultural supplies business in the east. Its friendly and respectful service has led many peasants to see it as the most upright institution in Vorona, and has therefore translated into votes and seats for them. All in all, 59% of Barovians opted for an opposition party.

I am sure all Voronans will join us at the Vorona Post-Gazette in wishing our new opposition assemblymen the best of luck in carrying out their duties.
