OOC Source: PixabayCachtice: The Deltarian Armed Forces have always played a important role in Deltaria. From a role of the defender of its territory to direct political control, such as a year ago, the armed forces stand at the center of it. This role has however changed in recent years, with different branches gaining more influence and the traditional hierarchy being shattered all thanks to a devastating conflict in Rapa Pile. What is the current standing of power within the military? What will its future look like? And what role will it play in Deltaria for the centuries to come?
Before the Pilese war the Deltarian Armed Forces were one of the if not the largest and most influential armed forces on Terra. They projected large influence abroad and had large amount of men, equipment and training. In Deltarian society the armed forces have always been regarded as the most trustworthy, with a deeply woven identity of protecting Deltaria as we know it while politicians, particularly in the Democratic periods of Deltarian history, have been viewed as far less trustworthy. This sense of security and knowledge the Armed Forces project has been enhanced by their recent bloodless coup, after which they immediately listened to the people and made peace with Vascania, something the civilian politicians hadnt done. This positive attitude towards the military also has its downsides, as the military is more prone to respond with unlawfull acts when it believes the state is in danger. The Deltarian Armed Forces also wield extreme influence in society, with most major industries tied into the military-industrial complex in some shape or form.
Then the Pilese war. It has fundamentally changed the power structure within the Armed Forces and will likely shape the future of the institution for decades to come. Over 100.000 Deltarians have died in the conflict, with most deaths coming from the army. Most of these dead soldiers were the first line soldiers, professional and fully trained, which have thus now been mostly lost. Thousands of tons of equipment have also been lost, including a variety of tanks, armed vehicles and machinery such as artillery destroyed. The conflict has left the Ground Forces battered and weakened. While it still holds around 600.000 professional soldiers it is in no condition to deploy even 50.000 of them and the large loss of equipment and collapsing GDP has put the combat effectiveness of the army in question. This is also the case with the Navy, which has lost thousands of sailors, a entire carrier and several other ships in the conflict leaving it as battered as the army. The collapsing GDP furthers this problem, as the navy has already been forced to dock nearly half the fleet as maintenance costs are increasingly harder to pay for.
This has left the Airforce in a powerfull position. It was already the largest conspirator in the coup that transformed Deltaria and now, with only minimal losses in the conflict, it is the strongest branch of the military. It still has sufficient resources to deploy most forces and has not been forces to ground its units. Now, with two branches of the military in dissaray, many wonder what this new power structure might bring to Deltaria. The new communist government has already announced a large military reform program, aimed at renaming and restructuring the Armed Forces. The military, in the new constitution, has also been given immense power, controlling all military industry by itself. This newfound power within the state will likely give the military, and in turn the now powerfull airforce, large leverage over foreign policy and possibly other aspects of the state. Many experts and civilians alike now wonder, will the Deltarian military rebound and once again find its footing? Or will other powers fill the gap and force Deltaria to use other methods to maintain its influence?
