Martinek vows to remain in Deltaria
December 3519

by Orbán Olasz

Cardinal Vladan Martinek: Deltaria's most difficult politcal prisoner

Since his savage blinding and confinement to house arrest last November, Cardinal Vladan Martinek's plight has become an international cause celebre, inflicting significant embarrassment upon the Czarist regime. The Martinek Freedom Campaign organisation is picking up donations, members and petitions of support from across Terra. In Dranland, the Democratic Progressive Party has called for his release, and the Governor of Ulbrach, Esperanza Diaz, is rumoured to be on the verge of inviting Father Tendaji Djaanfari to visit her province in order to collect an Order of Excellence medal on Martinek's behalf. Even Deltaria's old ally, Luthori, has pleaded for his release and even offered an asylum arrangement.

Móric Juhász, Minister of Justice and Punishments, has gone some way towards accepting Luthori's proposal, suggesting:

Former Cardinal Martinek will be released from the Monastery of Saint Volos and be allowed to live in exile in the Holy Luthori Empire. Our only condition is that he be allowed to live within the TPC church next to the Deltarian embassy, and that he be accompanied by two monks, personally selected by the Czar. In return, we guarantee for Father Martinek's safety and well being.

However, Djaanfari, speaking for the opposition, replied:

The father of the nation, Cardinal Vladan Martinek, has communicated to us that he refuses to willingly leave Deltaria. His words were, "If Boh allows me, I will remain in Deltaria to the end of my days, and follow my fate wherever it leads".

Instead of trying to exchange one form of imprisonment for another, perhaps the government will finally release this innocent and holy man?

Only one thing seems sure at the moment. The dispute over Martinek's legal and political status is set to run and run and run...

Purchase of Independent Contractors
by René Slavik

September 29 3520 - The Republic of Baltusia, one of Deltaria's newest friends and allies, has decided to further show the friendly relations between our two nations by negotiating a mutually beneficial transaction. Baltusia suffers from surplus population, and agreed to sell 4 million Tukarese and 1 million Gaduri independent contractors to Deltaria below market value. Deltaria has already begun taking steps for integrating the independent contractors within the Deltarian workforce, and it is known that many of them will also be transferred to work on plantations in North Utembo. A number of them might also be sold to Malivia, a nation that requires a large number of independent contractors for their religious ceremonies. Baltusia has assured our government that the Tukarese and Gaduri independent contractors are "hard workers". Further arrangements have been made for the sale of Terrarokans and incurable Thetanists "begging for hard labor".

Martinek on hunger strike; Djaanfali arrested
December 3519

by Orbán Olasz

Cardinal Vladan Martinek's supporters have announced he is going on hunger strike in protest at plans to relocate him from Deltaria against his will. Father Kornel Blaha of the Hosian Národná Strana said

Cardinal Vladan Martinek belongs here in Deltaria, with us, his loving followers. He has lived all of his life in Deltaria and wishes to remain here and eventually to die here. To forcibly deport him to Luthori and then confine him under conditions of virtual house arrest would be a gross violation of his freedom. Cardinal Martinek deserves to be freed - not just transferred to another place of detention.

Martinek's successor as HNS leader, Father Tendaji Djaanfari, is also having a rough ride. After visiting Dranland to collect an award on Martinek's behalf, the Deltarian government imposed a travel ban against his return, which Djaanfari promptly defied by taking the first flight to Naban Airport. He is now believed to be under arrest, and it is not yet clear how the authorities will respond.

In other news, Father Kornel Blaha, who is acting as HNS spokesman in Djaanfari's absence, has fiercely denounced the government's decision to import slaves from Baltusia:

For the government to be directly involved in the slave trade like this is totally unacceptable. The Deltarian administration needs to work towards the elimination of slavery, not taking part in sordid deals like this. It is especially abhorrent that the Czarists are planning to sell slaves to Malivia, where we all known they will be slaughtered in sickening human sacrifice rituals. How dare the leaders of a Hosian nation behave in such a barbaric way!

Rumours of massive international spy program

Speculation is rife that a number of former spies are on the run after leaking details of a massive and controversial spying program operated by one of Terra's most powerful and well-respected governments. Reporting restrictions prevent us from revealing more information at this point, but we hope to be able to provide more information soon.

Deltaria Honours Father Martinek
by Andrej Kováč

January 3521 - For the past few months, Father Martinek has shown Deltaria and Boh that he is indeed a changed man. During his stay at the Saint Volos Monastery, Father Martinek seems to have repented for his sins from the bottom of his heart, fully accepting the Light of Boh. This most holy man is so repentant of his previous sins, especially his sin against the natural order of things and the divinely ordained hierarchy of men, that he refused the offer of forgiveness granted by the Czar. The Deltarian and Luthori governments had arranged for the transfer of Father Martinek from his confinement in the Monastery of Saint Volos to the soil of the Holy Luthori Empire, where he would have become a free man. Instead, the holy father, filled with regret for his past sins, decided to atone for his by now forgiven crimes by remaining within the walls of the St. Volos Monastery. And even more, the pious father, overwhelmed by guilt and seeking divine forgiveness, has begun a total fast, just like the holy prophets of old.

In deference to Father Martinek's piety, Father Tendaji Djaanfari, his most prominent disciple, has been released from arrest. The priest, filled with misguided zeal for his mentor, accepted a foreign award for Father Martinek's past treasonous actions. As Father Djaanfari is but a young clergyman who still has much to learn about the virtue of obedience, and as his actions were caused by love for his mentor and not ill-will towards the Czar or His Government, he was released after the confiscation of Father Martinek's award.

Independent Contractors not Slaves

"The independent contractors bought from the nation of Baltusia are not slaves", claims the Deltarian government. "Had we wanted to buy slaves we would have done so". The governmental claims are supported by the fact that Baltusia's laws ban both slavery and the slave trade, and that had the new labourers been slaves, they would have been labeled as such. Moreover, the recent laws on the limitation of slavery continue to allow for the importation of six million slaves annually, a number that is also set to decrease constantly. The five million independent contractors, even if they were to be considered slaves, are still within that number.

Clerics claim victory in stand-off with govenment
March 3521

by Orbán Olasz

Image
Priests in Naban, celebrating the news about Martinej and Djaanfari

Hosiany Národná Strana supporters have little to celebrate these days, but for once, they have something to be pleased about. Cardinal Martinek's hunger strike has apparently persuaded the government not to deport him to Luthori, and Father Tendaji Djaanfari has escaped arrest, despite provocatively testing the regime's patience by re-entering the country in defiance of a travel ban. HNS spokesman Father Kornel Blaha said:

Ignore the semantic obfuscations of the Czarists. The fact of the matter is that we have defeated them. Thanks to the courage of Cardinal Martinek and Father Djaanfari, a great moral victory has been won for the cause of Holy Mother Church. We are showing our rulers that we cannot be bullied. If they rule unjustly, we can and we will defy them.

"Come back from the brink": Djaanfari's plea to Jelbania

Image
Father Tendaji Djaanfari speaking to the international media

HNS leader Tendaji Djaanfari has been touring the studios of international television stations in Tsargrad, calling on Jelbania's leader to "come back from the brink of war". Responding to Jelbania's latest threats, Djaanfari warned that an invasion "would only bring disaster to Jelbania - it is not in their interests or ours".

Kalopian Slaves Returned
by Andrej Kováč

April 3521 - With the improvement of relations between Holy Deltaria and the Central Majatran Federative Democratic Republic after the fall of the clerical government, Deltaria agreed to repatriate all slaves bought from Kalopia-Wantuni during the Wantuni Hegemony regime. For a long time, the two states shared borders and also shared the practice of slavery, resulting in hundreds of thousands of slaves from the Wantuni Hegemony being brought into Deltaria, most of them ethnic Kalopians, thus contributing to the Kalopian genocide. Slavery became legal in Kalopia-Wantuni in 3419, during the rule of the Helioclids, and the practice survived all regime changes in the lands to our east. Until the establishment of the Central Majatran Federative Democratic Republic, Kalopia-Wantuni was the headquarters of the Eilomax Company, the largest slaving corporation on Terra.

Image

To further cement Deltaria's ties with our neighbour, negotiations are underway for an increased role of Holy Deltaria in the affairs of the Democratic Republic of Siphina and of the Autonomous Democratic Republic of the East Deltarians. In exchange for these concessions, all former leaders of the Wantuni Hegemony that resided in Deltaria were arrested and sent to Kalopia-Wantuni, where they will face trial for their crimes.

Religious Freedom for Deltarians

The Czar, in His endless mercy, has decided that Deltarians that do not belong to the Holy Mother Church ought not be hindered from their loyalty and dedication to their Father. The Deltarian Veche is currently voting on a charter that will allow Yeudis, Ahmadites, and cat worshipers some degree of religious freedom. The heathens belonging to those faiths can no longer be compelled to change their faith, can freely serve in public office, and are exempt from the payment of the tithe to the Terran Patriarchal Church. Thankfully, the charter does not go too far, and believers in all other heresies and impious beliefs continue to face persecution. The government will also grant recognition equal to our holy marriages to those acts of fornication that Ahmadites call marriage.

"Young Priests Lack Discipline", says Church elder

Father Kornel Blaha's claim that the clerics defeated the government and Father Djaanfari's continued defiance of eartly hierarchy and authority are but a symptom of the decline of Church spirituality, claims Elder Paisie, a famed starets from the Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Sarah in Sfânta Cruce. Back in the old days, there was respect and deference for authority. Now, these new young priests that come along, especially since that Utemban lad got in the Veche, they have no respect for anything. When the rightful authorities are being justly harsh in their dealing of authority, these priests come and say that "human rights",or however they call those these days, are being abused. When the earthly powers are being merciful and forgiving, these young clergymen start saying that the Church defeated government, as if there were such a conflict in Holy Deltaria.

Saridan Blockades Deltaria

The barbarian nation of Saridan recently came under the rule of a number of unwashed primitives, who, led astray by their absurd heresies, oppose all forms of technology. For some reason, the Saridani barbarians believe that Deltaria actually cares what happens in their backwater nation, or what vegetables they grow there. In a recent move, the polygamous heretical government of Saridan placed Holy Deltaria under a trade embargo, thereby depriving us of Saridani sweatmelons and balsa wood.

In other news...

Northern horsef*ckers are moving their pitiful armies against us. After heaving threatened Deltaria and the rest of the continent including at the Council of Majatra, the Jelbeks are amassing their horses at our border. While Deltaria does not consider Jelbania to be a legitimate threat, the Minister of War has nevertheless been authorized to mobilize and deploy our armed forces across the border with Jelbania, just in case they really are as foolish as they let themselves appear.

TV priest attempts long-distance exorcism of President Jeztri
August 3521

by Orbán Olasz

Image
Father Roman Klimy

Father Roman Klimy, a Hosian Národná Strana legislator and popular host of the Sunday Morning with Father Roman television programme, has attempted an on-air long-distance exorcism on Jelbania's President Krsyijkai Jeztri. Klimy claims the Jelbanian President, who believes himself to be the Pope of the Terran Patriarchal Church, is possessed by demons. After 112 manic minutes of rampaging around the studio whilst lighting and blowing out candles, splashing holy water and muttering an Old Tokundian exorcism rite, Klimy tearfully declared the attempted exorcism "a failure" but urged his viewers "to tune in next week, same time and same channel, to see me engage Satanail in spiritual warfare once again".

Father Tendaji Djaanfari and other senior HNS figures are thought to be sceptical of Klimy's antics, regarding him as an attention-seeking sensationalist. Klimy has a huge cult celebrity following in Deltaria, however, and media bosses are already predicting he could pull in 20 million viewers for next week's exorcism.

In his latest statement, Klimy said:

We must never cease to pray for President Jeztri. If we pray hard enough - all of us together - we might just be able to dislodge the demon that is afflicting him and bring him back to his senses.

Djaanfari expresses "concern" for "confused youth"
October 3521

by Orbán Olasz

Image
Father Tendaji Djaanfari

Following reports in Lodamun about a 12 year old boy being sexually abused by clerics, Father Tendaji Djaanfari has issued this statement:

The details of this case have not been verified and are not entirely familiar to me. What I will say, though, is that Czarist radicals are spreading immorality all over Deltaria and corrupting poor, confused youths for their own ends. It would not surprise me in the least if these people have abused the boy, and then tried to manipulate him into pinning the blame on holy men of the Church. This sort of thing is happening all the time in Deltaria at the moment.

Radomíra Sasha of the International Human Rights Movement accused Djaanfari of "failing to confront the reality of widespread child abuse within the Terran Patriarchal Church in Deltaria", adding that Deltaria's religious schooling system "creates a climate in which people grow up feeling it is impossible to challenge men of the cloth". Sasha has written at length about the religious indoctrination of children in Deltaria's education system.

Krsyijkai Jeztri Coronated in Tsargrad

Krsyijkai Jeztri recieved his coronation as King of Jelbania today, in a private in Tsargrad. Both the Czar of Deltaria and the Archbishop Bořivoj Bořivojek confirmed Jeztri's new status as the rightful and legitimate King of Jelbania, vassal King to the Deltarian Empire. Jeztri bent the knee first to the Czar, being crowned, invested, anointed by chism and handed an ornate golden mace and orb, recently forged for just the event. His Eminence, Bořivojek, then stepped foward to confirm their marriage as Suzerain and Vassal in the Hosian tradition, forever sealing Jeztri into regal bondage to the Czar of Deltaria, with the following prayer ; "Most Boh-fearing, absolute, and mighty Lord, King of the Jelbéks and Jelbanians, this visible and tangible adornment of thy head is an eloquent symbol that thou, as the head of the whole Jelbanian people, art invisibly crowned by the King of Kings, Lubomir the Second, with a most ample blessing, seeing that He bestows upon thee entire authority over the Jelbanian people."

Image

Jeztri has had a guest wing set aside for his use, and been given the freedom of the Imperial Palace in Tsargrad, and according to the Deltarian authorities has stated that he fully intends to rule from there, never returning to his native Jelbania again ; his rulings and edicts being relayed to the Jelbanian people through the Deltarian ambassador, Eduard Kováč. "Do as he bids, my Jelbék and Jelbanian children," stated Jeztri in a brief speech to the news cameras, "For his honesty and loyalty to my reign have been guaranteed by the Little Father himself, the Czar of Deltaria. Treat his words as if they were my own. Respect him, love him, and obey him in all matters. Punish any intransigence or disobedience towards him with the harshest measures available to you. This is the will of your King." King Krsyijkai the First was then guided to his guest chambers by his heavily armed Deltarian bodyguard, who follow him everywhere he goes.

Czar takes control over Church

May 3523 - The conflict between the Crown and the Church, ongoing since the days of the Martinek regime, has escalated greatly in the last months. The Army of Boh, Cardinal Martinek's pet project, has been disgraced by its undisciplined behaviour during the war against Jelbania. Moreover, ever since the slaves belonging to monasteries have been released, and the Holy Sobor, most likely at the instigation of the government, used the financial compensation for the slaves to pay the victims of the Dolgavan Crusade, the monasteries have become a hotbed of opposition to the Crown. In order to deal with this issue, the government created the Holy Commission for Clergy Discipline, headed by Elder Paisie Velimirovici from the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Sarah in Sfânta Cruce, a known critic of the younger clergy. The new Commission has broad authority to enforce ecclesiastic discipline within the clergy, enjoying the power to appoint all new clergy, which appointment can be approved or rejected by the Holy Sobor, and having the right to impose disciplinary measures on all clergy of the Terran Patriarchal Church. The members of the Commission are to be nominated by Elder Paisie and will be approved by the Crown.

Monasteries Revolt

August 3523 - The recent imposition of governmental control over the Church determined the monasteries to take arms against the Crown. Judging the interference of the government in Church matters to be heretical, and decrying the indefinite postponement of electing a new Pope, the monasteries attempted to revolt and overthrow the Czar. The Men-Aside, the Czar's Dogmen, were unleashed on the monasteries, quelling the monastic rebellion within a couple of days. Thousands of monks and nuns have been killed, and many others were forced to become laymen, while hundreds of monasteries were razed to the ground. The Hosian National Party, the Church's political faction in the Veche, was forcibly disbanded and its members imprisoned, executed, or assassinated by the Men-Aside. With this, the long conflict between the Crown and the Church has been ended in the Crown's favour.
