SRPZ SAYS ASSASSIN’S CHECK WAS A HOAX

SPRZ Headquarters, January 5, 5206: Today State Director of Intelligence Vlad Ranzakh made the following announcement:

There has been a great deal of speculation and investigation by the State Directorate of Intelligence (SRPZ) into the deposit and withdrawal of funds to an account ostensibly in the name of the assassin, Antonov, in a briefly extant Keris Credit Union.

As we have just yesterday learned from the wife of a SRPZ senior official who is in a very bitter divorce proceeding against him, this official perpetrated the whole internet web of evidence indicating the transactions in question. The motive seems to be that although he was number ten in the agency, he was passed over to be number seven.

Now that we are onto him, he seems to be cooperating with the SRPZ investigation and will be prosecuted.

Obviously we should have been able to discover this much sooner. I am accordingly resigning effective immediately.

PREZIDENT VAJANSKA RESIGNS

Presidential Palace, January 6, 5206: Prezident Veronika Vajanska made the following statement to the media at the Presidential Palace:

First let me say that the allegation that the Government of Trigunskaya Federatsia was involved in the assassination of Prezident Patrik Siroky is false.

I believed as in fact everyone in government believed that the assassin did not act alone. After three and a half years, I recognize that no credible evidence exists that such is the case.

I always knew the SRPZ reports were inconclusive concerning Trigunian involvement; indeed the State Director of Intelligence made that abundantly clear.

I was not convinced by the Congressional Assassination Committee (CAC) report which mischaracterized the SRPZ report and was obviously heavily influenced by the charismatic Narodne Svedomie Opposition Leader Filip Komar.

But I was convinced by the National Security Service (NSS) report of its investigation overseen by former Interior Minister Linda Prokopová that there was Trigunian involvement in the assasination. A report we now know was without substance.

Worse, I acted on this belief giving orders including orders to SRPZ which have now been revoked.

This conduct by me is not to be excused. I am accordingly resigning as Prezident of Republika Deltarska immediately.

Feketevar, Janusry 8, 5206: The leadership of Jednotny Federalny Zvaz (JFZ) met at its Party Headquarters in Feketevar to consider its future. After the meeting Prime Minister Stefan Dvornachek made the following statement:

Perpetrating and spreading the idea that Trigunia was involved in the assassination of Prezident Siroky was something for which the entire leadership of JFZ was involved. We were certainly not alone in this but we all were involved.

Accordingly, we have disbanded JFZ which we believe has regrettably run its course.

Prime Minister Komár delivering his resignation speech

Čachtice-Cěsarĭgradŭ - April 14, 5206: The Trigunia Affair, as the scandal surrounding the botched investigation into President Patrik Siroky's assassination four years ago is known, has left in its wake the dissolution of the JFZ, the bearer of a hegemony over Deltarian politics for decades, an international economic crisis among Deltaria's closest allies, and some very steep pay rises for internal affairs investigators. But while the JFZ, which was in government over the course of the Affair, has largely been the target of the public's ire, its disbandment has allowed public attention to turn back to Národné Svedomie, which collaborated with the government over the course of the scandal and was largely responsible for encouraging the false theory that Trigunia was responsible for Siroky's assassination in the first place.
In response, the Cassative Governance Council, a little-known group of obscure NS backbenchers that seems to only be convened in crises as severe as these, has forcibly expelled the thousands of NS office-holders collectively responsible for weaponizing public and government opinion against Trigunia unfairly from the party, leading almost without exception to their resignation from those offices. In addition to those, over 16,500 NS members not in office were purged along with them. The most prominent of these unlucky hawks is indisputably Prime Minister Komár, who was by far the loudest anti-Trigunia voice in the party; he resigned from the premiership today an independent for all of six minutes. Vandalarius Teiasson, former Shadow Minister for Science and Technology and a noted critic of NS hawks, has been elected PM in his stead.
This comes as even more damning new evidence in the indictment of the investigation comes to light. In addition to the revelation that an unidentified mid-level SPRZ official, dubbed "the World's Most Dangerous Cuckold", forged evidence financially linking assassin Vyacheslav Antonov to the Trigunian government out of double spite after a messy divorce and being passed over for promotion, it has come to light that NS member Linda Prokopová, Interior Minister during the Emergency Cabinet, actively hushed up blatant evidence that the assassin had no political goal in mind, but in a twisted sense merely sought to impress actress Jarmila Trojanová, who had won a TariaVis Award for Best Actress nine months prior to Siroky's assassination. The sheer expenditure of government resources on genuinely exploring the Trigunian connection followed by the quiet discovery of this almost comically anticlimactic motive seems to have prompted the government, worried that it would face public embarrassment over its wastage, decided to keep publicly blaming Trigunia - a scheme that, evidently, has backfired. Furthermore, there are increasingly vocal calls to investigate everyone involved for directly implementing racial theory in government affairs, as Antonov is an ethnic Rodshyan and may have been racially profiled, sparking the whole fiasco in the first place (though it is indisputable that he actually committed the assassination ipso facto; far from being hundreds of meters away from Siroky and being accused of killing him with a bomb or sniper rifle, Antonov did, after all, storm the stage on which Siroky was standing and shoot him twice at point-blank range).
Trojanová responded to the hubbub on her Tweeter page, saying that as horrified as she was by how deep such a conspiracy as this could run, she was "[a] bit morbidly flattered that someone would kill the president for me, haha. (srsly plz dont)." Antonov has been retried and found not guilty by reason of insanity; he has been committed to psychiatric care and will have 750,000 telars in compensation waiting for him upon his release.

Prime Minister Teiasson announcing the Restoration, Reconstruction, and Reconciliation program

Čachtice-Cěsarĭgradŭ - May 21, 5206: Prime Minister and Acting President Vandalarius Teiasson has set many a milestone and been an outlier in many respects: he is the first Doron head of government in the present Republic's history; he was the leader of a relatively small anti-brinkmanship faction in Národné Svedomie that proved vindicated earlier this month with the removal of many party hawks.
Now, he can add another item to his resumé. In a speech at 250 Čížek Street, the NS party headquarters, Teiasson has announced an ambitious new program for making up for his party's involvement in the Trigunia Affair. He referred to it in Luthorian as the "Restoration, Reconstruction, and Reconciliation Program", which will constitute new moves to empower anti-corruption and internal affairs bodies throughout the government ("restoring the people's trust in and control over the state"), establishing and consolidating a more rigid and rules-based diplomatic framework for Deltaria ("reconstructing Deltaria's ability to function on the world stage"), and making amends for the geopolitical havoc it has wreaked over the course of the Trigunia Affair ("reconciling with each and every government and nation we have hurt, including Trigunia; especially Trigunia"). "It is time for Deltaria to move on from the fiasco that has defined it for the past four years," Teiasson proclaimed, "both in word and in deed."
Observers are hesitant about the notion that Deltaria should play the active part in rapprochement with the Trigunian government; after all, it has been at odds with democratic governments before, and was the world's most prominent supporter of the most recent (and arguably most polarizing) junta to take over North Dovani, in direct opposition to Deltaria's position. Nevertheless, the 3R Program seems to be Deltaria's best shot at reviving the Deltarian-Trigunian Friendship and Trade Agreement, the suspension of which by the Trigunian government saw Deltarian denied a full billion barrels of oil and two trillion cubic feet of gas. It will also go a long way towards reestablishing Deltaria's global credibility, as the Trigunia affair also spiked Bier Qassem crude prices to nearly LOD 93. Of course, domestic commentators also applaud the Restoration 'prong', and are optimistic about its implementation, especially coming from a politician so willing to go against the grain for ethics' sake.

Gov't exploring possibility of dedicated anti-piracy vessel

The Defense Ministry is exploring the feasibility of constructing a new, dedicated anti-piracy vessel for use by the Deltarian Navy to engage in both offensive and protective missions in relation to international piracy. While Stráž could not reach Defense Minister Thorismudson for comment, DODA Director Alexander Skalický was willing to elaborate on the Ministry's decision.

Now, as you hopefully know, the concept of "more is better" is not as relevant to the military as you might think, because just as much as it is inappropriate for the Air Force to carry out a precision strike to eliminate one single terrorist leader by sending in a flight of strategic bombers or for the Army to clear a house by initiating a tactical nuclear weapon, deploying a destroyer to get rid of a few mooks on a leaky raft is an almost comically ill-suited decision. On the other hand, if you'll turn to Page 57 in your history textbooks -

- you'll note that there is a small but very real chance of certain governments actively and enthusiastically sponsoring bands of pirates who then are empowered to commandeer gigantic cargo ships, and sending out a couple of tugboat-sized Home Fleet putterers to spray them with water is hardly a productive use of the Navy's time.
In consideration of this wide range of potential counter-piracy scenarios, the Defense Ministry has therefore decided to explore the idea of creating a versatile but dedicated anti-piracy vessel able to make the concept of 'proportionate response' relevant to our counter-piracy policies, and will allow us to respond to any pirate-related situation appropriately, in a word, 'from Skiff to Supertanker'. This will, in the government's opinion, be of major importance to a Home Fleet largely neglected by our current approach to piracy, to our detriment in the year 5092, and while we will of course be prioritizing this hypothetical vessel's use in the Majatran Sea, international deployment is definitely on the roadmap.

Prime Minister Teiasson speaking in support of the ISEA

Čachtice-Cěsarĭgradŭ - March 17, 5207: As famously committed as Prime Minister Vandalarius Teiasson is to clean and ethical government, some feel that he may be going too far. The Prime Minister has personally introduced the Institutional Service Ethics Act into Congress, which would cut salaries for officials all over the government, including lawmakers, to levels just a few dozen telars above the legal definition of a legal wage. PM Teiasson has claimed that the ISEA will ensure that government officials will vie for office solely on the basis of their own commitment to serving the nation instead of the pursuit of wealth by minimizing the profit incentive from holding office.
However, despite NS's overwhelming congressional majority, he faces stark opposition in his own party over the measure, and not merely from the sort of people Teiasson's faction portrays as the prime and most unfair beneficiaries of the status quo, whom he has mercilessly portrayed as holding "an outdated belief that public servants need to be rewarded with limousines and mansions for their 'hard work'". Benedikt Křoupal, a key figure in Teiasson's wing, expressed concern that contrary to the Prime Minister's hopes, the ISEA will in fact increase corruption, with government officials being driven to embezzlement and the acceptance of bribes to compensate for their wage cuts; Křoupal has also characterized existing wages, approximately on par with that of a moderately successful white-collar worker, as already reasonable enough. Teiasson has so far dismissed criticism of the bill, claiming that those who denounce him as naïve are doubly so.
Time shall prove him right or wrong.

Ringleader Bořivoj Kraus being led out of court

Čachtice-Cěsarĭgradŭ - September 17, 5208: Last year, Congress passed a law cutting the salaries of workers and officials throughout the government to a level comparable more or less with that well-paid blue-collar workers, which Prime Minister Vandalarius Teiasson hailed as a vital ethical measure, whose potential to backfire by engendering compensating for the hit to incomes by illegal and corrupt means was dismissed and waved away. Time would prove him right or wrong, Správa reported then.
Evidently, he is wrong.
The members of the 'Quickdraw' corruption ring, so-named for how quickly it was set up after the passage of the Institutional Service Ethics Act, have all been found guilty of myriad crimes ranging from accepting bribes and kickbacks to embezzling funds collectively worth something approaching 195,286,000 telars. The corruption ring, led by Representative Bořivoj Kraus, roped in lawmakers who would have contractors in on the scheme work on home improvements in exchange for winning valuable contracts; more stubborn companies were bought with public funds illegally lifted from the government.
Criticism of the ISEA has risen sharply in the wake of the Quickdraw trial, with a leading NS member who wishes to remain anonymous stating that "only a blithering idiot could possibly fail to understand that when it comes to government employee income, an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure", apparently deeming the wage cuts to have indeed been made up for through breaches of trust. In spite of this, PM Teiasson has stood by the bill, saying that his critics should have worked alongside him to approach the problem holistically by proposing corresponding anti-corruption legislation.
