PMD to Reform as La Ligue des Socialistes Rildanoraises
December 4353

Early this month, the Party of Metzism and Democracy in Rildanor announced that they would officially restructure as La Ligue des Socialistes Rildonaraises (LSR; League of Rildanorese Socialists), citing growing membership as the main cause.

After winning our first seats in the '52 general election, more and more leftists across Rildanor have come to us for guidance. We have given them hope for a renewed Rildanorese Left after 10 years of Axist rule. Some of our supporters had even been members of the left-wing of the Parti National Axiste, but upon our formation decided we offered a more palatable programme for them. It has been so wonderful and heart-warming to see so many people all across the country come out for us. As a result of the massive influx, we're simply unable to maintain the more centralized structure we'd established only a few years ago. As a result, both party officials and rank-and-file members have agreed to a restructuring under the umbrella <<Ligue des Socialistes Rildanoraises>>, to represent the diversity of our members.
We still wholeheartedly support Communism and Democracy, and will retain our current democratic structure, as well as devolving more powers down to regional and local offices to support the policies and candidates they feel best represents the interests of where they live.

We hope this move will serve as a model of unity for other left-wing parties across Terra, as well as improving our responsibilities to our members and constituents. We look forward to the future of Rildanor and the LSR.

Les Leaders des Ligue Socialiste Atteindent le Sentier du Campagne Fort
Socialist League Leaders Hit the Campaign Trail Hard

July 4356

In the general election earlier this year, the Ligue des Socialistes Rildanoraises (LSR; League of Rildanorese Socialists; informal: Socialist League) lost the close minority it held to the ruling 1République party, though not by enough to give the 1R a full majority in the National Assembly. As a result of this minor seat loss, however, party leaders have begun steadily ramping up their efforts in preparation of the party elections in May of next year. The various caucuses within the party are all vying to represent the Rildanorese left. The Social-democrats had the strongest showing in the previous election, taking 49% of the seats in the party's General Committee, but the minority rule meant that the other factions were able to steer the party's course, as many in the LSR are weary of the Social-democrat's positive attitudes towards capitalism.

Zacharie Soucy, leader of the Social-democratic Caucus and LSR co-chair, said:

We believe that capitalism is indeed flawed and in need of reform, but we also believe it has contributed many good things to our society in terms of individual freedom and prosperity. We also believe that socialism has a lot of good to offer as well, but we don't think a society should lean too heavily one way or the other.
It's important to find the balance that allows us to have a free, prosperous society that doesn't shirk on social responsibilities.

In response, co-chair Augustine Hambard, leader of the Metzists, had this to say:

The flaws of capitalism are not mere side effects of the system--they are the system. Capitalism is unequal and anti-social by its nature, in order to facilitate greed and power-mongering. It cannot be fixed because there is nothing to fix, it is all working exactly as intended--the working class suffers while the wealthy expand their power. We must have a fully Socialist society, because capitalism will only ever lead to misery and hate, even if it's tempered with socialistic reforms.

More hard-line factions in the LSR have called for the Social-democrats to be removed for their "bourgeois socialism," but the party fears that doing so may alienate more centrist elements in Rildanorese society and cause them to lose standing as a "big tent for the left." Many prominent right-wing thinkers in Rildanor have speculated that this internal divide means the LSR is due for a split, but party leaders insist this is merely a misunderstanding of their internal politics. In an official statement released by the LSR General Committee, they stated:

The League of Rildanorese Socialists prides itself on diversity of thought. We are capable of having these discussions because we all share the values of democracy and free exchange of ideas. Those on the Right may not be able to understand this toleration for differing opinions, but it is what has made the LSR a true party of the People. We are all comrades in this struggle against the capitalist hydra, and though we may disagree, we continue to discuss and respect one another going forward.
The workers of Rildanor never have to worry about us going away; we will be here a long time yet.

Des milliers de citoyens protestent contre l'abroger des réformes majeurs par le gouvernement
Thousands Protest Government Repeal of Major Reforms

December 4358

A month before the 4358 general elections, the National Assembly Rildanor passed to laws, the Race Registration Act and the Military Reform Act, both of which aimed to undo two laws passed by La Ligue des Socialistes Rildanoraises. For reasons unstated, the 1R party in the Assembly had abstained on the original bills, which were part of a 4-bill slate introduced by the LSR (all 4 bills passed, but there has no been indication that 1R supports the repeal of the other half of the slate). This move has seen its largest support by the Right, who claim that the LSR's reforms were pushed through the Assembly and unrepresentative of the will of the people. Meanwhile, those on the Left were the most supportive of the reforms and condemned the repeal, with the LSR officially stating, "This is a massive step backwards for Rildanorese society and represents the belief, long-held by the Right, that society should remain stagnant where it is and never be allowed to progress."

In response to the repeals, which have recently started to go into full effect, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in support of the LSR and calling for the Prime Minister's resignation.

The LSR, for its part, claims that the results of the 4358 elections are a direct result of opposition to the Government's actions. Perpetual LSR Presidential candidate Augustine Hambard won the plurality in the 1st round, only to be defeated in the runoff, but it was by-far the best result the party's had in its history. Likewise the LSR has, for the first time in its history, achieved a plurality in the National Assembly, taking votes away from both 1R and the PNA. Though an LSR-led coalition has yet to be formed, many of the LSR's supporters point to this as a revolt against the pre-dominance of the Right in Rildanorese politics for the past several decades, and a vote of confidence for what is now being touted as the LSR's "mixed-bag socialism."

Time will tell if this represents a changing trend or a fluke, but it is certainly an interesting and unexpected turn of events.

CoS & GI: SELEYAN COUNTRIES SHOULD PURSUE THE PATH OF FURTHER INTEGRATION
Nowogard, September 4364

Original Article: CoS & GI: SELEYAN COUNTRIES SHOULD PURSUE THE PATH OF FURTHER INTEGRATION

Gloria Iustitia's new headquarters (building in the center) in Nowogard, Valruzia.

NOWOGARD - In what seems to be the first official document issued jointly by human rights and democracy organization Gloria Iustitia, and the Council of Seleya which is aimed at preservation of multicultural characteristics of the Seleyan continent and at the same time monitor the state of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, diplomats from the Council of Seleya and lawyers from Gloria Iustitia say that Seleyan Union should work out the future shape of the Seleyan Union. Gloria Iustitia praised the legacy of the Seleyan Union which in the last couple decades became one of the top three areas on Terra where democracy is respected and citizens of Seleyan Union can enjoy peaceful life outside of any life-endangering conflict. In the document called "Seleya: Agenda for future and peace 4400" Gloria Iusitia and Council of Seleya point out that in recent decades the Seleyan Union which represents saw an unprecedented economic growth and according to the authors of the document, that is the result of closer economic cooperation on the continent and taking down economic barriers between member states. Council of Seleya highlights the importance of the Aloboro Agreement which, despite Valruzia and Alduria are the only participants, significantly affected the economic cooperation between the two countries, especially in the automotive. CoS underlines the fact that the Agreement contributes to growth in all sectors of the economy and especially in services, as with no border controls people are most likely to travel throughout Seleya. According to the document, Valruzian Ministry of Internal Affairs claims that average annual number of Aldurian tourists visiting Valruzia is 230 thousand, while the National Office for Statistical Research about 310 thousand of Valruzians visit Alduria every year. When compared with numbers before the Agreement came into force, we can see that they are roughly twice as high without the border patrols. Both Valruzian and Aldurian tourist industry benefits greatly every year thanks to the Alboro Agreement, in both countries the recent decades of saw increase in the total number of hotels and resorts and both quantitative and qualitative growth of the tourist and leisure infrastructure. In Valruzia tourist and leisure services make up a total of 8.9% of the total GDP which is relatively high result in north Seleya.

CoS and GI point out that extreme, nationalist political parties tend to undermine or distort the achievements of the Seleyan Union and tend to overuse the claim that it limits the sovereignty of the Member States. Gloria Iustitia points out that no article in the Treaty on the Seleyan Union limits the political might of any Member State and that all 12 Member States can enjoy the same rights within the community and are free to leave the organization. Economists from Gloria Iustitia highlight that in order to sustain the economic growth of the whole region, Member States will have to sit down together and work out additional protocols or declaration which will reform the current union. One of the proposed solutions is an increased level of economic freedom by establishing a pan-seleyan corporate status for companies that are able and are willing to operate on the territory of Seleyan Union and that their services and operations will have transborder character. Gloria Iustitia point out that the Valruzian government have tried to establish such solution back in 4327 with the Seleyan Petroleum Company - the planned company was supposed to have a unique corporate identity and could be the first ever Societas Seleyanea - allowing it to operate on the territory of the whole Seleyan Union and to be the subject to a special procedures in countries it operates. I could be said that currently, companies like Bonning and Reglair are the closest to what the Valruzian Government wanted to implement more than 30 years ago despite they operate as Valruzian corporate entities, and are subject to Valruzian internal taxation. Creation of such ventures could allow for the creation of the Union's budget which could be used for structural programmes for underdeveloped regions in the Seleyan Union and as subsidies for development programmes of the Member States' governments.
