Conservatives Fall Short of MajorityLa Nouvelle Tribune
July 2, 3841The most recent elections for the Aldurian Estates-General took place on the first of July of 3841, which was also the first election in which the newly-formed Parti Conservateur d'Alduria was on the ballot. The incumbent party, the left-wing Option Citoyenne, was reduced to a slim majority with only 43 seats out of the 80 seat chamber. The insurgent right-wing PCA took 37 seats, clearly an indication that the government of the past six years had yet to gain the trust of the electorate. Despite Alduria's long history of low turnout, the 24% in this election was actually the highest turnout since the election of 3815, which occurred a generation ago.
With a stagnant economy and very inactive government, many people turned to the only alternative on the ballot, the Party Conservateur d'Alduria. Nicolas Chevalier, the young leader of the PCA, promised to bring back "moral and economic revival to a country who has lost both." Throughout the two years it has been in existence (though without any seats in the Estates-General), the PCA proposed numerous "reform" bills that entailed privatization of industry and more socially conservative propositions, such as bans on non-heterosexuals from adopting children.
PCA strategists had been targeting seats in Zanyal Valley, where more than 43% of the population is either extremely or fanatically religious. However, election results showed that the PCA would only win 6 out of the 16 districts in the province. However, to the surprise of many and to the chagrin of the Option Citoyenne, the PCA won every seat in Bendiri, one of the more liberal states. The PCA also won 6 seats in Mondalat, 5 seats in Harkonia, and 4 seats in Nouvelle-Orange.
Party leader Nicolas Chevalier, who won a seat in Zanyal Valley, has pledged to introduce legislation regarding administrative reform, and socially conservative issues. He also promised to deregulate industries. The following is an excerpt from the election night speech.
Ce soir, nous n'avons pas gagné. But the battle has only begun! The PCA is only 4 seats away from the majority, and we are in striking distance of finally bringing an end to the rule of the Option Citoyenne, who are closet Communists. They have done nothing for the hardworking people of this nation. Long ago, we were promised that if the government took over and managed all the industries of this nation, that the ills of the working class would go away. However, many years on, we can see that that is not true! Wages are stagnant, production is low, the government is in a deficit, and the Church is being ignored! I've made this pledge multiple times throughout the nation, and I will make it again tonight. We will deregulate industry. We will restore social conservatism and the policies of the Church. We will reform the administrative policies of this government. Although we are not in the majority yet, we hope to gain the trust of the voters whose votes we didn't earn. Good night!
