April 4459

Newly-elected President Charles de Tugart has issued a statement declaring his government is "considering all options" in terms of the situation in Noumonde, and that "an Aldurian contribution to a military action against Noumonde is now definitely on the cards".

Blanchard critic assassinated

Journalist and radio hostess Mireille Lafaille has been shot dead outside her home in Semailles. Police say they are "strongly suspicious" that she was targeted by shadowy individuals connected to Action Canrillaise International in retaliation for her outspoken criticism of Noumonde's former dictator, General Remy Blanchard, and in particular for her using her decision to use her radio show to urge her listeners to vote for Blanchard in the Bellevue-sur-Mer Bonfire Night poll.

Pro-Istalia march takes political classes by surprise

In a development which took the media and the political classes very largely by surprise, 20,000 Aldurians descended yesterday upon central Semailles, where they marched past the National Assembly, the Presidential Palace and the Prime Minister's Department, before rallying outside the Istalian embassy in order to show their support for what the organisers called "the courage of the Istalian government and the Istalian people in standing up for human rights".

The march appears to have organised itself relatively spontaneously over social media. The sheer numbers of people who turned up took everybody by surprise, including the organisers, and also the police - who had to bring in reinforcements to steward the march, although the day's events passed off very peacefully and there were no arrests.

Giselle Chardin, a human rights activist who spoke at the rally, commented:

I think what this shows is that human rights are universal, and there is not a country in Terra where there are not people who care about them and are willing to stand up and be counted when it comes to defending them. In recent years, time and time again, we've seen Istalia in effect being the Conscience of Terra, taking a stand and doing what's right, even when others around the world are indifferent or even hostile. We've seen this particularly over Noumonde, and now again over Saridan. But if I had to pinpoint what has pushed people over the edge and really galvanised them, it's the horrible anti-Istalia agenda being pursued within the Consortium Alliance. You could not find a single person here today who does not want to say a big "Fuck You!" to certain of the political leaders involved in that. That is why so many people have come out today, to show the Istalians that they're not alone, and that the world is behind them.
.

It is not all good news for Istalia, however. Following the pro-Istalia march, several right-wing newspapers have run editorials criticising and mocking Istalia's general approach to foreign policy.

August 4494
President Maille announces his support for restoration of slavery, Education Minister resigns

President Constantin Maille suddenly announced his support for the reintroduction of slavery in the Republic of Alduria and announced he was going to withdraw from anti-slavery international treaties.

While this move surprised many PPA members, Maille justified it by saying: "Our plan is only to enforce slavery as punishment for criminals, which we consider to be a legitimate and fair form of slavery. It will allow them to serve society and to better the lives of law-abiding and good citizens. It is therefore perfectly in line with my beliefs of a benevolent dictatorship and my plans for the future."

Although left radicals were mostly shocked by this move and opposed it in an internal party vote, there was no official reaction from the Radical Left faction of the PPA. However, Minister of Education and Culture Aurore Jourdain announced her resignation from government and her defection to the Socialist Party. She will be replaced by Louise-Aldurie Barrière.

August 4495
After election defeat, Maille leaves PPA leadership; left radicals win primary elections

After unexpectedly losing the presidency to Socialist Cédric Popelin, Maille fulfilled his pledge and left PPA leadership. After his departure, a primary election was held with the following candidates:
  • Noémie Campbell, member of the left wing of the party. She pledged to fight for workers' rights, support a United Front policy with the Socialists and Internationalists, and turn Alduria into a socialist state. She also opposes many surveillance laws put into place by Maille, and wants to rejoin international treaties against slavery.
  • Charles-Honoré Marchand, member of the militaristic faction. He wanted to radically change the country and focus the entire economy on the military, essentially making Alduria an army with a state.
  • Louise-Aldurie Barrière, member of the right wing of the party. She pledged to restore some private industry, and to collaborate with the traditional order.
  • Pierre Vidal, member of the radical Maillist faction. He pledged to keep true to Maille's actions, even the more radical.

The results were the following:
1st round
Campbell - 44.7%
Marchand - 23.0%
Barrière - 17.1%
Vidal - 15.2%
2nd round
Campbell - 64.8%
Marchand - 35.2%

Campbell took control of the party, which she decided to rename to "Parti Socialiste Républicain d'Aldurie" (Socialist Republican Party of Alduria).

PRL (Liberal Republican Party) holds a march against socialist tyranny

This morning throughout the nation members of the libertarian leaning Liberal Republican Party have taken to the streets with picket signs, banners, and flags in order to protest the authoritarian socialist administration currently in power. They advocate for a return to free enterprise, individualism, and minimal government involvement in the private lives of its citizens as the best possible solution to the various problems facing Alduria. Such protests come but one month prior to elections in August of 4498, in liberal circles there is talk of a potential victory and with it the chance to dismantle socialism piece by piece for a Alduria that is free.
