Republic News (RN): The Republic of Kirlawa has elected Senator Aaron Reynolds of the Urban Party of Kirlawa as President. This is a truly historic event as Reynolds will be the first Black Kirlawan to occupy the HoS position in over 100 years.

President Reynolds Speaks About the Kirlawan Economic Crisis

Republic News (RN): On October 29, 2754 President Aaron Reynolds gave a speech at the ACEC Labor Union Conference about Kirlawa's floundering economy. Reynolds received positive praise for his speech on the economy.

"When it comes to the economy, we need to recongnize what our problem is, identify it, and fix it. That being said, it is easier said than done. Our problem is not so much the economy itself, but it's our aging and outdated infrastructure and tech sector. We have only 2 limited-access highways, that do not serve our industrial centers or our ports and are only found in our suburbs, our airports are adequate at best, and if anything, the Port of Cadoria which is the largest (size) in the nation is ranked 12 out of 18 in all of Artania. In terms of capicity, we are ranked 7 out of 18 in Artania. That is what drives business out of here; they see our "broken" infrastructure and are immeadiatley "scared". They'd rather do business in Aloria instead of hear. That, my friends is why our GDP has fallen since 2713; not becuase of rising inflation or recession fears, but becuase our infrastructure lacks the current capacity to handle any new business in the nation. If we want to get ahead, then infrastructure reform is the key."

Hurricane Malra Makes Landfall

Republic News (RN): Hurricane Malra made landfall today about 28 miles south of Cadoria in the town of Portsmouth Beach as a strong Category 4 (131-155mph) with winds of 135 Mph. Governor Alrez Muzaria has declared a State of Emergency in response to the hurricane and will receive help from the nations armed services in the cleanup effort. So far there are reports of about 6 people dead and 23 injured. About 38.1 million people in Dirguzia Province are without electricity and that number is expected to rise over the next day or two. Damage was worse in areas to the north of the storm including Cadoria and towns to the south. Damage is already being estimated at 8.1 Billion KDI. What made Hurricane Malra so unique was the place it formed. The Artanian Hurricane Season is usually found toward the central part of the continent and rarely effects the northern part. In all of Kirlawa's weather history, this will be the 45th time a tropical system has managed to strike the nation (the last time was in 2733). This will rank as the strongest and costliest in the nation's history when final figures are available.

Here are pictures from the hurricane:

Reynolds Approval Ratings Down 4 Points

Republic News (RN): A poll conducted in January finds the President's approval ratings down by 4 points from 56 to 52 percent. The move comes as the President failed to get his agenda failed and the economic crisis in the nation is getting worse. Another problem harming this administration is the growing number of conservative parties in the nation which have blocked the presidents efforts.

August 2758
Christian Socialist Movement makes early impact on Kirlawan politcs

The Christian Socialist Movement has startled observers by successfully lobbying the General Assembly to enact a series of radical legislative changes. These include discontinuing the army's use or possible use of nuclear, biological, chemical or landmine weapons; banning recreational drugs; imposing controls on fuel prices charged by private power companies; subsidising the cost of public transport and granting tax incentives for worker co-operatives.

The Movement haven't had it all their own way, though. Efforts to prohibit human cloning, restrict abortion, overhaul the banking system and scrap taxes on religious institutions were all rejected by legislators.

CSM founder and leader Simon Crossley said last night, "We are delighted with what's been achieved. The laws that have been passed will put our armed forces on a much more ethical footing, make the world safer and make our society a fairer place. However, what we really need more than anything is seats in the General Assembly, so we can really have a voice and stand up for the rights of ordinary people up and down the country."

The CSM plans to contend seats in all regions at the next election, scheduled for May 2761. Simon Crossley is fast building up a political following for his party across Kirlawa yet, though he has refused to comment on whether he has plans to contest the Presidency.

Former President Speaks About "Growing Threat" of Conservatism

Republic News (RN): On November 8, 2758, former President Aaron Reynolds attended the annual Freedom and Liberty Conference. The conference focuses on recapturing and expanding progressive politics in the nation. This year Reynolds was invited to speak and among the many topics he answered, none drew more pomp and circumstance than the question posed by the David Berbanch of the Nisira Times-Herald; the nation's foremost liberal newspaper. Mr. Berbanch asked, "How will the increase in Conservative Politics affect the Nation?"

Reynolds replied by saying, "As it stands right now, the idea and principles of conservatism are gaining strength everyday. There is no way we can stop conservatism in the nation, but we can decrease the influence of it by working with the parties that practice it. Ever since the Kirlawan Popular Front disbanded, the nation has been moving to the right every year and it looks like there is no end in sight. Analyst on both sides of the political spectrum have stated, that if trends continue and conservatism is allowed to run rife in Kirlawa, the country will go back to the way it was some 320 years ago; isolationist and government that could care less about you and will stay out of your business....say hello to an extremely small government."

Myers Calls for Investigation into Neptune Inc.

Republic News (RN) [May 23, 2763]: Today President Sharon Myers along with several corporate watchdog groups, called for an investigation into the Kirlawan based Neptune Inc. The company is accused of bribing government official so they would agree to buy submarines for the Alorian Army. At the center of the controversy is the Centre Democrats, a party that was the main benifactor of the bribes. Two cabinet officials have resigned and there is speculation that the current president Benigno Arroyo might be involved in some way.

Election Results November 2764

Christian Socialist Movement gain Presidency and major presence in Assembly

The most prominent change in Kirlawan politics this election cycle has been the rapid rise of the Christian Socialist Movement. Offering a religious populist alternative for many Christian Kirlawans who had previously supported the Kirlawan People's Justice Party despite their secularism, or the Orangeists despite their laissez-faire position on the economy, in 2764 the CSM have doubled their previous share of the General Assembly. Now holding 113 seats, they will appear as List Three on the ballot next time.

The 2764 election also awarded the newly formed Liberal Party their first seats. Although considerably more moderate than the recently departed KPF or the long-ago KDL or FPL, the Liberal Party offer Kirlawan voters an overall leftist choice, so that they no longer have to settle for either the cultural conservatism of the KPJP and CSM, the rightist fiscal approach of the Democratic Freedom Movement and Kirlawan Austrian Party, or the centrism of the Urban Party of Kirlawa.

Detailed election results are available at
http://classic.particracy.net/viewnews. ... 2&nation=4

Presidency

Simon Crossley of the CSM, running alone for the Presidency, won in both rounds of voting, and stunningly prevailed over two coalitions: the KAP's Elizabeth Crowell (also endorsed by the DFM and the Orangeists), and incumbent President Sharon Myers of the UPK (also endorsed by the KPJP). Nicholas Evans of the Liberal Party placed fourth, but was chosen by more than one out of every eleven voters, a very good showing for a brand-new party.
The KPJP are very likely to endorse President Crossley (or his CSM successor) in the next election, since the two parties share similar populist stances on many issues.

General Assembly

Besides by the CSM and Liberals, Assembly seats were also gained by the DFM and UPK.
On the other hand, the secular KPJP have recently lost a number of devoutly Christian voters to the CSM; a few KAP seats passed to their DFM allies; and the Strong Republic Party lost a third of their previous holding.

The conservative Orangeists have missed many votes in the Assembly, and continue their slide, now down to 12 seats. Most of their supporters have transferred to Kirlawa's two current Movements: socially conservative ones to the CSM, fiscally conservative ones to the DFM.

Leftist Coalition 301 (+27): Kirlawan People's Justice Party 188 (-29), Christian Socialist Movement 113 (+56)
Free Market Coalition 239 (+22): Democratic Freedom Movement 132 (+28), Kirlawan Austrian Party 107 (-6)
Independents:
Strong Republic Party 82 (-42)
Urban Party of Kirlawa 61 (+18)
The Liberal Party 22 (+22)
Orangeists 12 (-47)

Senate

The Orangeists have lost their four remaining Senate seats; while the Liberal Party have won their first one, in Chrisalya, Dirguzia. The Leftist Coalition maintain their slim Senate majority.

LC 54 (+1): KPJP 40 (-10), CSM 14 (+11)
FMC 33 (+9): DFM 20 (+9), KAP 13 (nc)
Independents:
SRP 8 (-9)
UPK 4 (+2)
Liberal 1 (+1)
Orangeists 0 (-4)

Provincial Assemblies

Governors
Uwakah: Leyla Doyle (KPJP)
Dirguzia: Gregory Callahan (KPJP)
Nuchtmark: Beatrice Greene (KPJP)
Dirlana: to be nominated by the Christian Socialist Movement
Merkan: to be nominated by the Kirlawan Austrian Party

Uwakah

The Leftist Coalition continue to hold the Uwakah legislature, with a slightly reduced majority, and long-term Governor Leyla Doyle of the fuchsia-cerise maintains her popularity among the voters here. One very controversial seat in the suburbs of Zobagon, won in 2761 by the CSM's challenger by eighteen votes over the DFM's incumbent, has now gone to the KAP by a similarly tiny margin.

LC 61 (-3): KPJP 54 (-2), CSM 7 (-1)
FMC 31 (+2): DFM 21 (-3), KAP 10 (+5)
SRP 5 (-1)
UPK 3 (+2)

Dirguzia

The Liberal Party concentrated their campaigning in Dirguzia, and have been rewarded with twelve seats in the provincial assembly.
Meanwhile, the SRP have lost their previous majority and even their status as largest local party, with the governorship now going to the KPJP's Gregory Callahan. Most of the seats in question have been won by DFM challengers, re-establishing that party's presence here.
The UPK have also regained a seat, in this province where not too long ago they had held a majority.

LC 36 (+6): KPJP 29 (-1), CSM 7 (+7)
SRP 26 (-30)
FMC 25 (+15): DFM 21 (+20), KAP 4 (-5)
Liberal 12 (+12)
UPK 1 (+1)
Orangeists 0 (-4)

Nuchtmark

To an uncanny and remarkable degree, voters in Nuchtmark stayed with their coalitions.
Twelve local seats previously held by the KPJP transferred neatly to their CSM allies in the Leftist Coalition; and four of the KAP's similarly switched to the DFM, their Free Market Coalition partners. This left the SRP to pick up the remaining two Orangeist seats (despite there being no coalition between this pair of parties).
The KPJP's Beatrice Greene continues the Greene family dynasty of governors here.

LC 74 (nc): KPJP 62 (-12), CSM 12 (+12)
SRP 13 (+2)
FMC 12 (nc): KAP 7 (-4), DFM 5 (+4)
UPK 1 (nc)
Orangeists 0 (-2)

Dirlana

Reacting to recent economic troubles, Dirlana's voters have decisively switched from laissez-faire to intervention. After last election, fiscally rightist parties (the FMC plus the Orangeists) had held three-quarters of the provincial legislature; now the LC have a (very slim) majority, with the CSM winning their party's first governorship.

LC 51 (+30): CSM 28 (+22), KPJP 23 (+8)
FMC 40 (-17): DFM 27 (-20), KAP 13 (+3)
UPK 9 (+5)
Orangeists 0 (-18)

Merkan

In contrast to Dirlana's voters wanting more government, Merkan's now want even less than before. The FMC have won a majority in the legislature of Kirlawa's most libertarian province, with the KAP continuing to hold the governorship.
Even the Orangeists, despite being electorally wiped out across the rest of Kirlawa, actually gained strength here, picking up six seats formerly held by the KPJP.
(The Orangeists have been abstaining on most bills recently, so perhaps that makes them more appealing to Merkan's voters who prefer less government? ;) )

FMC 56 (+21): KAP 39 (+9), DFM 17 (+12)
LC 23 (-13): CSM 16 (nc), KPJP 7 (-13)
UPK 13 (-3)
Orangeists 7 (+6)
SRP 1 (-11)

Election Results May 2768

New governors in Dirlana and Merkan

One of Kirlawa's calmer elections nationally, the 2768 vote has rewarded the Kirlawan People's Justice Party, the Urban Party of Kirlawa, and the Liberal Party with moderate increases in prominence.
A number of recent environmental initiatives proposed by the KPJP all failed in the Assembly, but did manage to win popular attention. Many eco-socialist voters who had supported the Christian Socialist Movement in 2764, returned to the KPJP, likely as a result.

Due to a recent lack of active campaigning, the conservative Orangeists have relinquished their last electoral foothold, but do still exist and have not disbanded.

Changes were more dramatic at the provincial level, where the Strong Republic Party have greatly increased their presence in Merkan and won the governorship there, and the Free Market Coalition (made up of the Democratic Freedom Movement and the Kirlawan Austrian Party) have regained a majority in Dirlana.

Detailed election results are available at
http://classic.particracy.net/viewnews. ... 8&nation=4

Presidency

Incumbent President Simon Crossley of the CSM (also endorsed by the KPJP) won in both rounds of voting, by a bigger margin than before, in his rematch against the KAP's Elizabeth Crowell (also endorsed by the DFM and the Orangeists). Luis Martinez of the UPK placed third, and Nicholas Evans of the Liberal Party fourth.

General Assembly

Kirlawa's 2768 Assembly is rather similar in composition to the one before.
Within the Leftist Coalition, two dozen seats transferred from the CSM to their KPJP allies.
The UPK and Liberals added a little over a dozen each, while the KAP and Orangeists lost some, costing the latter party what had remained of their presence in the Assembly.

Leftist Coalition 304 (+3): Kirlawan People's Justice Party 216 (+28), Christian Socialist Movement 88 (-25)
Free Market Coalition 219 (-20): Democratic Freedom Movement 133 (+1), Kirlawan Austrian Party 86 (-21)
Independents:
Strong Republic Party 83 (+1)
Urban Party of Kirlawa 75 (+14)
The Liberal Party 36 (+14)
Orangeists 0 (-12)

Senate

The fuchsia-cerise have regained the ten Senate seats that they had lost in the last election, mostly from CSM and KAP incumbents. Kirlawa's 2768 Senate otherwise closely resembles that of 2764.

LC 59 (+5): KPJP 50 (+10), CSM 9 (-5)
FMC 27 (-6): DFM 19 (-1), KAP 8 (-5)
Independents:
SRP 7 (-1)
UPK 6 (+2)
Liberal 1 (nc)

Provincial Assemblies

Governors
Uwakah: Leyla Doyle (KPJP)
Dirguzia: Gregory Callahan (KPJP)
Nuchtmark: Beatrice Greene (KPJP)
Dirlana: to be nominated by the Democratic Freedom Movement
Merkan: to be nominated by the Strong Republic Party

Uwakah

KPJP Governor Leyla Doyle, more popular than ever, has led her party to a full three-quarters of the local assembly here in Kirlawa's most leftist province. Although Uwakah would appear to be a perfect fit for the Liberal Party, Kirlawa's newest party have not yet broken through here.

LC 77 (+16): KPJP 75 (+21), CSM 2 (-5)
FMC 17 (-14): DFM 16 (-5), KAP 1 (-9)
SRP 4 (-1)
UPK 2 (-1)

Dirguzia

The Liberal Party's first seats had been in Dirguzia, and this time they expanded their share to a quarter of the provincial legislature. Most of these districts had been taken from the SRP, a party who two elections ago had enjoyed an absolute majority here, but whose holding has now fallen from a quarter of the legislature to a tenth, ceding the difference to the Liberal Party.
Gregory Callahan of the KPJP continues as governor.

LC 41 (+5): KPJP 33 (+4), CSM 8 (+1)
Liberal 25 (+13)
FMC 20 (-5): DFM 16 (-5), KAP 4 (nc)
SRP 10 (-16)
UPK 4 (+3)

Nuchtmark

Surprisingly, the Liberals' other gain this election was in Kirlawa's most conservative province, Nuchtmark, where they won a district in central Luthi.
The voters have easily retained Governor Beatrice Greene here, as her fuchsia-cerise slightly increased their existing majority.

LC 78 (+4): KPJP 64 (+2), CSM 14 (+2)
FMC 15 (+3): DFM 8 (+3), KAP 7 (nc)
SRP 5 (-8)
UPK 1 (nc)
Liberal 1 (+1)

Dirlana

The previous election may have been an aberration, as Dirlana's conservative voters have now returned the Free Market Coalition to power here with a majority in the local assembly, and the DFM winning the governorship.

FMC 52 (+12): DFM 38 (+11), KAP 14 (+1)
LC 32 (-19): KPJP 18 (-5), CSM 14 (-14)
UPK 16 (+7)

Merkan

Although the SRP lost seats everywhere else in Kirlawa, they made up for all of this in Merkan. Going from one seat to 32, the SRP have won almost a third of the provincial legislature, a larger share than either of the two coalitions, and have claimed the governorship as well.

SRP 32 (+31)
FMC 30 (-26): KAP 21 (-18), DFM 9 (-8)
LC 24 (+1): KPJP 18 (+11), CSM 6 (-10)
UPK 14 (+1)
Orangeists 0 (-7)
