Luthi selected to be case study for direct democracy
July 8th 5439
The Aontas Náisiúnta has announced earlier today that the city of Luthi will be a pioneering case study on the potential for direct democracy to be implemented into cities nationwide. Cooperating with Direct Democracy Kirlawa, a minor party which is popular in Luthi, the NU seeks to investigate the potential for public participation in the governing process, and the possibility of enhancing democratic security as a result. The system is based around digital voting and the to be created "Luthi Electoral Commission", whose is responsible for voting security, dissemination of correct information and maintenance of digital services. All eligible electors under the system, who are people of permanent residence and citizenship, can propose and vote motions, which can be in any of the fields a city council usually covers, and other fields the national government permits.
While many have speculated what will happen throughout the experiment, economist Sadhbh Hynes has shared us the following insights:
.... we should be of the expectation that a large amount of zoning legislation will be quickly removed, along with many permits that people my find arduous to obtain. We have very little insight as to what will happen to the population, as this system appeals to some more than others, and we could see specific groups moving to or from the city based on this reason. What is most concerning is the risk of populist agendas being pushed through the system by manipulating people's emotions, or of even more concern, people selling their votes to others for either money or the other person's vote in something they want.
