Political Earthquake in Egelion
For the first time in 116 years the Partido Monarquico loses the majority in the Cortes Generales

Political ally and upcoming party Partido Democrata has won the elections in Egelion. While winning only by a skim mmajority, 38 to 37 seats, this event represents a huge change in the political landscape of Egelion, that witnesses a non-PM majority in more than a century. Jordi Abós has led his party to a significant victory.

Many consider the recent secularist-leaning policies of the PM the reason for its loss in popularity.

The governance of the PM has been completely changed.

Below are a collection of snippets from newspaper articles summarising key events in Egelion over the last few years.

Government Collapses

August 3982

Amidst huge pressure following riots in the capital and a break down in law and order across the country the governing Liberal Democrats have collapsed. The President Tiago Santana has resigned as Head of State following his implication in the corruption scandal that has rocked Egelion to the core. The scandal involved the manipulation of share prices in historically state owned companies and the subsequent murder of investigative journalists and a judge who had been chosen to investigate the scandal.

Anarchists, Communist and other assorted revolutions have sized the opportunity to launch attacks on the police, courts and other institutions of governance. A wave of violent criminality has also descended across the nation as the police struggle to contain the fall out from the collapse of the government.

Although the Cortes Generales has not been disbanded, all remaining politicians will now sit as Independents following the formal dissolution of the Liberal Democrats.

COUP!!!

March 3983

The military have seized control of Egelion, with soldiers patrolling the streets of the capital and senior officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force forming a new cabinet along with senior technocrats from the Civil Service. Head of the Army, General Francisco Cortez has been sworn in as the new "Regent", effectively the new Head of State for Egelion.

This follows months of anarchy in Egelion. Amongst other things the Junta have created legislation formally allowing powers of arrest to members of the armed forces and also legalising torture. This are seen as necessary measures by the new government to restore law and order to Egelion. The title "Regent" is ominous, perhaps the new Junta is supportive of a restoration of the monarchy? Many officers are known to harbour Royalist sympathies.

Regent Promises Return to Democracy

February 3985

In a speech to the Cortes Generales Regent General Francisco Cortez has promised a return to "democratic multiparty elections" no later than March 3989, the sixth anniversary of the coup that brought the Junta to power. The General stated that "the rule of law has returned to Egelion" and that "we are well on our way to restoring the dignity and respect due to the Egelion people".

It was noted that torture is still legal and the numbers of the "disappeared" continues to grow.

Patriarchal Church Established as State Church

October 3985

The Patriarchal Church of Egelion has been established as the state Church of Egelion. This follows the development of a very close relationship between the highly conservative Junta and the traditionalist Patriarchal Church which has been vocally supportive of the Junta and its policies. Legislation also criminalises blasphemy, exempts the Patriarchal Church from taxation and gives the Church an important role in the shaping and provision of education.

In the second part of a series providing an overview of key changes in Egelion please see below for a collection of snippets from newspaper articles summarising key events in Egelion over the last few years.

Egelion Military Acquires New Kit

December 3987

As we near the end of 3987 it is worth reviewing the state of the Armed Forces in Egelion. Following the 3983 budget, which saw defence spending increase by 30Billion EGPs to 65Billion EGPs, the Armed Forces has continued to grow in size, with new divisions formed, and perhaps more importantly new equipment purchased or built by Egelion companies. Both the Air Force and Armada Air Arm have developed new indigenously produced multi-role platforms capable of air defence, strike and ISR roles. Similarly the Armada has acquired its latest aircraft carrier, with another one under construction and two new nuclear capable submarines have recently entered service.

It had been recognised that the Armed Forces needed a massive overhaul of equipment and we have seen this through the late 3980's with a huge programme of rearmament. Previously the Air Force had single-role aircraft, whereas the new aircraft will allow greater operational flexibility. The Armada is almost been redeveloped away from protection of coastal waters into a force capable of supporting Terran wide expeditionary operations. New money is also being made available to redevelop the Army's Main Battle Tank and Attack Helicopters along with improved pay and pension packages for members of the Armed Forces in order to increase morale and to encourage recruitment for new units that have been established.

The Air Force Hunter muiltirole aircraft. By 3890 the Air Force will have ten squadrons of these highly capable platforms.

The New State continues to emerge

December 3988

Junta reforms added a second partially elected legislative chamber to compliment the Cortes Generales have passed.. The Senate shall have 140 Senators, 90 of whom will be elected in thirds for three terms in national elections, an additional 30 will be appointed by the Head of State and the Armed Forces and Patriarchal Church will each appoint 10 members. The Senate has been designed as an advisory and reviwing chamber for the Cortes Generales and will not have legislative creation powers.

This follows a series of conservative reforms in Egelion designed to prevent radical reform for occurring and to entrench the socially conservative values espoused by the Junta.

Junta calls Referendum

April 3989

As anticipated the Junta have called for a referendum to be held in May 3989 on extending the Junta's lifetime by six more years. Regent General Cortez detailed that the Junta had more work to do to reform Egelion and that the existence of a Communist Party meant that the rule of law was once more under jeopardy. He called for a large yes vote to endorse the work of the Junta.

Although polling in Egelion isn't a overly reliable indicator of voting, with the full weight of the state behind a yes vote, along with the Patriarchal Church, big business and the bulk of the media (that which survives censorship anyhow), the Junta is likely to wins its referendum.
