Hosian Fundamentalists Elected to Power

November 5406

A Hosian fundamentalist party has been elected to power in Lodamun, defeating the governing Lodamun National Party. Formed in the Republican tradition, the party had advocated policies of enhanced religious freedom for Hosians, social conservatism, limited government and reforms to the immigration system.

The party figurehead Annabelle DeMarr, a well known televangelist within the Charismic tradition , was easily elected to the Presidency under a platform declaring “Eliyahu to be our saviour”.

Second Great Awakening in Lodamun

October 5407

Religious, political and cultural figures are heralding a second “Great Awakening” in Lodamun as the government passes legislation designed to enhance religious liberty for Hosian churches in the country. Under the New Yishalem Bill, six Hosian churches are to receive special privileges including the freedom to run schools. Not all Hosian denominations have received favourable treatment. The GDP legislation provides a short list of which Hosian groups are to be preferenced by recognised status. The denomations favoured are ones that are historically relevant in either the Luthorian or Dundorfian speaking world (namely those linked to Amelioratism, Confessionalism or Bishopalism), or denominations that are native to northern Seleya (such as Charismism, Brethrenrism and Latter Day Hosianism).

The first Great Awakening is regarded by historians to have started in the late 5150’s and led to a decades long revival of Hosianism in the country.

Large group of activists form the Popular Roundtable against the Republican Party

6th January 5315

A large group of centrists, liberals, socialist, communists, secularists, ecologists and many other groups came together against the far-right Hosian fundamentalist Republican Party to form the Popular Roundtable - United We Stand, a big-tent party that its ideology ranges from center to far-left, with also some center-right factions. Remarkably, the Popular Roundtable chose the slogan "We will get through this crisis, together!", referring to the rule of the Republican Party as a "crisis" and urging the people to unite to get through that crisis.

The party includes various factions ranging from conservative liberalism up to communism, however, in general the social democrats, democratic socialists, and left-wing populists are the most visible factions, with also social liberals being a notable faction, while the others being less influential on the internal politics of the party. The party has presented a manifesto to the Congress that proposes to reverse many ultra-conservative and racist policies, with a focus on reversing the "damage" made by Hosian fundamentalists and bringing about a secular-progressive sociopolitical transition in Lodamun.

However, the party is now very new and any hope that it would win would be premature and perhaps false hope, as the elections are four years after today and it is possible that the voters could "make a fool of" the Popular Roundtable and decide to re-elect the Republican Party, as the political landscape evolves the new party garners more attention from various political groups.

The Aldegar Canal remains one of the world’s most important geostrategic arteries. Each day more than $7 billion LOD and some forty (40) vessels of varying tonnage traverse the canal every day, each carrying varying cargo and en route to numerous ports of call throughout the world. The canal’s smooth operation is largely dependent on hundreds of employees including pilots who guide ships from either end of the canal, and the stevedores who aid in unloading cargo which would eventually find its way to its destination on land. Amidst the deteriorating internal political situation sweeping through the country, canal staff are now refusing to return to work until the nation’s incumbent government resigns and holds free and fair elections. Much of the commotion is the result of numerous incidents which has rocked the nation’s political landscape including the self-immolation of university student Freydoun Shajarian citing his deep grievances against the state of affairs within the nation, the subsequent arrest of activist Parisa Shahi on grounds of treason and espionage and the general strike which followed. In a statement issued one month prior, the Aldegarian Ministry of Trade and Labour announced that it would be suspending the movement of traffic through the canal canal citing “recent waves of protests that has hit Aldegar alongside accusing foreign nations from fueling the unrest and destabilizing the country for geopolitical gains.” The decision has prompted some international response as the Bieteynuese Minister of Foreign Affairs Noah Levy noted that the North-West Majatran power was “monitoring the situation closely and hopes for a swift return to normal operations,” whilst also prompting Dolgavan Prime Minister Ursula Soosaar to note the potential broader damage the situation could have on global trade. With traffic being blocked from traversing the canal, it is expected that shipping companies may divert much of their traffic towards alternative routes including through the Silliers Channel and Karzon Strait as a means of accessing the wider eastern hemisphere, in moves which will undoubtedly drive up shipping costs. At its afternoon press conference, the Department of State confirmed that it was monitoring the situation and joined Beiteynu and Dolgava in urging calm among the respective parties whilst also placing Lodamun’s support behind the restoration of democratic institutions in Aldegar. State Department Spokesperson Priscilla Mencken explained that Secretary of State William Spencer had numerous briefings related to the situation with President Danvers on Lodamun’s broader response to the situation as well as sat on numerous assessments of its impact on Lodamese trade. “Secretary Danvers has had numerous meetings with President Danvers on the issue where it was reiterated that there should be greater dialogue among the respective parties to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion. He also sat in on briefings with Merchant-General William Hanlon on the crisis’ impact on Lodamese trade. As part of those meetings, it was also stressed that Lodamun remains committed to keeping Seleya as a zone of peace and expresses its fullest support for the restoration of democratic principles and institutions within the nation,” Mencken concluded. Merchant-General of the Harrington Company, William Hanlon, via a press release, stated that ships of the Harrington Company had been ordered to adhere to the decision of the Aldegarian Ministry of Trade and Labour and avoid the canal altogether. “Whilst this situation will undoubtedly place additional pressure on private shipping firms, whom we are urging alongside our vessels to avoid the canal altogether, we are confident that following our complete assessment of the economic impact, we [the Harrington Company] can move accordingly to adjust our operations to suite the new environment,” the statement read. The Lodamese Coast Guard has noted that in anticipation of a potential increase in maritime traffic through the Karzon Strait, the Coast Guard would reinitiate Operation Barracuda and would continue to scale up its investments into ensuring wider security throughout the region’s maritime channels.
