President Dogwood to give birth

MERENBERG - Staffers for President Danielle Dogwood confirmed today what the rumors had suggested; she is pregnant. The 51 year old who will celebrate the beginning of her 21st year as President of the Republic has termed the pregnancy a "miracle," according to her press secretary. Her doctors have stated that the pregnancy appears normal, and genetic testing has revealed no serious abnormalities or deformities, a rarity for a woman of her age.

The President has opted to not be informed of the gender of her child. "If it is a boy, it will be Dante. If it is a girl, it will be Doressa," says the Office of the President website. The President will turn her official duties over to Prime Minister Redwood temporarily when she gives birth, but expects to return to work within a week. "Like millions of other Darnussians, President Dogwood will be a working mother." Dogwood will be the first Darnussian elected head of state to give birth while in office, but in some ways it is carrying on a family tradition; her father Douglas was born while her grandfather, David, was President, back in 2669. Will the newest Dogwood carry on the family business?

"Ask in about 25 years," says the President's Press Secretary, with a wink.

Commemoration to be somber affair

PODRUEJA - One hundred years ago this May, the Province of Clenon was ravaged by nuclear missiles fired on the orders of Claude Deimore, the Imperial Viceroy. The one hundredth anniversary of the bloodiest day in Darnussian history will be a somber affair. The last two known survivors of the attack, Klaus Hendrith (103) and Andrew Ben-Abhron (101), will speak at a gathering in Memorial Park, the site where the first missile hit in what was formerly the downtown center of old Podrueja. Prime Minister Redwood, who is from Clenon himself, is expected to speak at the event, where he will honor both the perseverance of the Clenese people, and give thanks to the workers from the other provinces who aided in the relief and recovery effort, and made the region habitable again after a decades-long cleanup effort.

President Dogwood, an Alkavoni native, is expected to give a similar sentiment in either a live or a recoded address to the nation; her ability to give the speech live will depend on a go-ahead from doctors, who have limited her physical movements out of concern for her unborn child.

Navy placed on alert, sources indicate

DORESSA - Last night, the DSS Darntus, flagship of the Second Fleet, quietly left port, without fanfare, four days before its scheduled departure. Sources in the Defense Ministry indicate that Defense Minister Evergreen has ordered the fleet to patrol international waters in Migrant's Pass. This news comes shortly after word that the Pontesi Navy had begun efforts to blockade Beitenyu, and their own patrols in Migrant's Pass to enforce that blockade.

Officials questioned on the record refused to answer any questions about the naval alert. Reliable sources, however, indicate that the Navy intends to ensure the defense of "neutral shipping" through the busy shipping lane, and deter any Pontesi incursion into Darnussian territorial waters.

Rumors of significant intervention in the Pontesi-Beitenyu conflict appear unfounded, otherwise; sources within the ground forces command indicate that they have received no advance notice of any foreign deployment. The Third Brigade did deploy last night from Ghacrow, but our sources indicate they have arrived on Narikaton Island, for scheduled training exercises, as of late last night.

The President's office had no comment.

Dante Dogwood, 7 pounds 3 ounces

MERENBERG - The President's newborn son was born late last night, weighing in at 7 pounds, 3 ounces. Doctors have given both mother and child a clean bill of health. In Podrueja, Prime Minister Redwood took the oath of office as Acting President formally, after news arrived that President Dogwood had gone into labor.

Nova Terra declared "terrorist organization"

MERENBERG - Joining with other allies, the House of Delegates has passed legislation condemning Nova Terra as a Terrorist organization, and placing severe restrictions on financial support to it and its affiliates. President Dogwood signed the bill into law in a ceremony this afternoon.

"We will not sit idly by while the spiritual heirs to the New World Order threaten global peace and security. We will not be intimidated by their death threats. We shall not be complacent or complicit in the face of impending tragedy throughout the world, at their hands. The only rational action is to go forward, and kill the roots of this poisonous tree before it bears its poisoned fruit."

Darnussian Navy now on patrol in Migrant's Pass

GOODPORT, MIGRANT ISLAND, NIHATON - The Second Fleet is now on scene, providing air and naval cover for merchant vessels traveling through Migrant's Pass. Most of the fleet entered international waters earlier today, with its first contact being an oil tanker bearing the Keymonese flag. The vessel declined assistance, as it had already passed through most of the danger zone, and was bound for a port in Belizia.

Despite news that indicated Pontesi was withdrawing their forces southward, the Defense Ministry stated it would continue its plans to protect neutral shipping through the area, which extends to the edge of Beitenyu territorial waters, but remains significantly offshore of Pontesi. "Our intent is not to provoke Pontesi sovereignty. The patrol zone is designed specifically to stay well clear of Pontesi waters, whereever possible, to avoid any inadvertent incursions into their exclusive economic zones," says a spokesman for the Second Fleet command. Neutral shipping is being advised to skirt the coast of Malivian waters to progress beyond the patrol zone to the east, due to the possibility of submarine, surface vessel, or aerial attacks.

Nova Terra backed party wins plurality; Leftists take Presidency

MERENBERG - After a shocking set of election results, the nation is now holding its collective breath, to see what direction Darnussia will take, with the former ruling party and the new President holding the nation's fate in their hands.

Former President Dogwood finished third in the first round of Presidential voting, which meant for the first time since 2707, the Surprise Party would not hold the Presidency. Dogwood worked tirelessly, however, ensuring that the Presidency went to the left-wing Darnussian Justice Party (DJP) candidate, Riley Clark-Long, rather than the Nova-Terra sympathizing Darnussian Nationalist Party (DNP) candidate, Oliver Rocha. Clark-Long prevailed narrowly, as the conservative leaning nation elected an unabashed liberal rather than a suspected terrorist.

However, the President has proposed a cabinet which includes the DNP, which threatens to place Nova Terra sympathizers in positions of power.

Outgoing Prime Minister Redwood has threatened that there would be "severe consequences, if terrorists are placed in positions of power. Darnussia's place in the world will go from a modern, respected nation, to an international pariah."

The Surprise Party has endorsed a pan-left alternative coalition, between the DJP and the Liberal-Democratic Party. The two parties together do not have enough votes to win, but the Surprise Party offered to endorse the coalition as "by far, the lesser of two evils."

Empty shelves, and rising construction prices

DORESSA - Construction of nuclear shelters, and sales of anti-chemical weapon supplies have spiked in the wake of the election results. In Doressa, shelves were lain bare, as residents fear that their soil will shortly be hosting foreign troops.

"It's great for business, but I'm exhausted," says Raolf Menegren, a second-generation Beluzian immigrant who works as a day laborer in Doressa. For the last two weeks, he has been digging holes for nuclear bomb shelters for ten hours a day. "My dad saw what happened to Clenon; I don't blame the folks for being nervous."

Even if the DNP is kept out of the government ministries, their increasing influence could be a provocation. "We're surrounded by Luthori, Hobrazia, Malivia, Beluzia, Beitenyu... Beluzia is an old Luthori ally, and the others are all members of the Axis," says Franklin Markel, a banker in downtown Doressa.

Cabinet seated; tensions fall

MERENBERG - As Brandon Tracy (DJP) took the oath of office as the new Prime Minister, much of the nation took a collective sigh of relief. The new government of Darnussia will be composed of the two major left-leaning parties, the DJP and the LDP, with the tacit support of the Surprise Party, blocking at least for now the spectre of Nova Terran participation in the legislature.

The deal places the LDP in government for the first time since its formation, and returns the DJP to the Prime Minister post for the first time since 2707, when it was called the DSDP.

Emma Evergreen will take the helm of the Surprise Party, which will be neither in the government, nor the official opposition, for the first time since 2663.

Not surprisingly, the deal does not make everyone happy. DNP supporters were expected to protest the deal, claiming they were shut out of government despite their legislative plurality. Their position is hardly unprecidented, however; the Surprise Party had a plurality from 2698 to 2707, but was in Opposition. The Oink Oink Party suffered a similar indignity from 2662 to 2668.

"Dealmaking is part of politics. While we do not support the leftist ideology, we prefer leftist government over the government of terrorism," said Evergreen, explaining why she agreed to continue with the Redwood-negotiated deal to support the minority coalition; Darnussia's first actively-governing minority since the days of Claude Deimore. "It does not mean we will compromise with them ideologically, but they can at least be trusted to act in what they believe the nation's best interest is, rather than the best interest of some foreign puppetmaster."

Prime Minister Tracy and Foreign Minister Bartlett (LDP) are expected to address the press soon, to set their agenda for the coming term.

Redwood to seek quiet retirement

MERENBERG - Few in the legislature could even remember what the protocol was, except one, old man. After sixty-two years in public service, and thirty-four years as Prime Minister, Robert Redwood was one of only six members of the House of Delegates who had ever seen another Prime Minister inaugurated. He was also the only man who knew a different Surprise Party leader. When he was first seated to represent Clenon in 2679, he spoke with a thick Darnus accent, representing a heavily Alkavoni-migrant community. His accent was, in fact, so thick, that his first speech to the House was very nearly his last. Decades in Merenberg have tempered, but not entirely eliminated, his formerly infamous mainlander accent; he has been called uncultured, rude, aloof - and that by members of his own caucus. But no one could deny his ability.

Redwood became Opposition Leader in 2705, after serving a stint as Shadow Minister of Finance, and before that serving as Assistant Minister for Trade. Two years later, the voters gave him an outright majority, and the Redwood era began.

Overshadowed by the comparatively charismatic Presidents Birch and Dogwood, Redwood was the quiet enforcer, keeping the government running and the party in power as the electorate shifted, until the end. Even now, he has few regrets.

Yesterday, Redwood had to be helped to his feet, to pass the official duties of Prime Minister to his DJP counterpart. The last year has been exhausting for him, physically and mentally, as he faced what he called "his last crisis."

"I like 'im. Tracy. He's a good kid, good head on his shoulders." Redwood said to me, as he walked (well, hobbled) with me to his office for what would be his last time there. A kid? Well, to the 91 year old Redwood, they're all kids now.

"Bit too idealistic, but he'll grow outta that," he added. Tracy, of course, is no spring chicken himself.

On the topic of his party successor, he was more brutal. "She takes it too personal. Like it's a personal insult to her, these elections. I worry about her... but, well, I could only ride the tiger for so long. Better for me to get to retire, then wake up with her knife in my back some mornin. She's a good kid, but she's no Bob [Birch] or Franz [Fernidad]. Well, it's her show now."

"You've spent so much of your life in this office. Do you think you're going to miss it?" I asked him, as he admired the view from his fourth floor office.

"I won't miss the bloody stairs, that's for sure," he jokes, then turns back to the window. "I've got my garden at my granddaughter's place waiting for me," he says, more soberly. "It'll be nice to tend it without worrying about some damned crisis back here. No more midnight phone calls. No more red-eye flights half way around the world."

He turned back to me, a twinkle in his eyes. "But, her place is in Alkavon, you know. I'm a bit worried they won't understand my Darnus. They say I've got a bit of an accent."

Image
Members of the Communist Party of Darnussian Republic celebrate their party victory.

MERENBURG - Communists hold a commanding lead and a majority -- in Darnussian parliamentary elections, state media reported. Election poll was the first ballot since Communist Party of Darnussian Republic (CPDR) announced their intention to create a Soviet Socialist Republic of Darnussian. With all 100 percent of the parliamentary vote counted by the Central Electoral Commission, the Communist Party led with 85.14 percent. The Darnussian Nationalist Party followed with 14.86 percent; and New Democratic Union with 0.00 percent. In presidential vote, Nadia Zovastina of the CPDR won with 86.48 percent with former president Oliver Rocha at 13.46 percent.

In a victory parade, Zovastina address the crowd: "We want to achieve a new and better order of society: in this new and better society there must be neither rich nor poor; all will have to work. Not a handful of rich people, but all the working people must enjoy the fruits of their common labour. Machines and other improvements must serve to ease the work of all and not to enable a few to grow rich at the expense of millions and tens of millions of people. This new and better society is called socialist society. The time has come for the Nationalist to stop their blatant corruption on the back of us worker!"

She also announced her intention for a complete reorganization of the nation defence, intelligence, and police system along with the nationalization of all industries and banks. There is also speculation regarding the nation's membership in the Axis, but she had denied to comment about it.

National People's Army to be Reorganized

Image
Rusty tanks and weapons are set to be replaced by newer model.

MERENBURG - The Supreme Council of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Darnussian are set to pass the National People's Army Act which will result in a reorganization and rename of Armed Forces of Darnussian which already begin with a huge inspection into high rank officers of the Armed Forces by the investigation committee set-up by the Supreme Minister Nadia Zovastina.

Igor Rafnek, Spokesperson of the Organization call Darnussian Soldiers, believe that this move by the Supreme Minister to cleanse the Armed Force are crucial after a decade long of Nationalist rule which leads to an unusually large numbers of high rank officers that are affliated from the Darnussian Nationalist Party. "It is absurd that some young incompotent riches boy are given the rank of Major with his personal driver and more then enough food, but have never even set foots outside of the capital while dedicated soldier like my son are given cabbage soup and send to protect our nation without any recognition at all! I would like to applaud the Supreme Minister for acting quickly to cleanse the armed forces from these corrupted and incompotence officers and bring back our glorious Darnussia Armed Forces."

The Supreme Minister had also announced her plan to the Supreme Council of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Darnussian for 100% increase in Defence budget in order to improve the quality of equipments and training of the National People's Army. In addition, she also introduce a hugh increase in Education, Health and Internal Affairs.
