COASTAL DEFEENSE INSPECTIONS

Zavrospol, January 17, 4866: Today Assistant Navy Chief of Staff for Coastal Defense Troops and Naval Infantry R. S. Pugachev was on an inspection tour of the 876th Coastal Defense Brigade. The Coastal Defense brigades are employed to defend the coasts from naval craft supporting an invasion or bombarding shore installations or our navy. A Coastal Defense Brigade normally has one motorized infantry battalion and some artillery batteries. Since the army would be the primary source of troops defending against an invading army, the primary duty of the Motorized infantry would be to protect the artillery batteries.

The standard mission statement provides in the event of insurrection the motorized infantry battalions would move to protect missile bases. In the case of the 876th Coastal Defenses Brigade, it would secure the site of the 5th Missile Defense Brigade.

The 876th Coastal Defense Brigade has artillery units equipped with the Bal - E coastal defense system with mobile launchers of anti ship and surface to surface missiles typically targeting 5000 ton displacement craft including frigates, convoys and landing craft.

A battery typically has one or two command and control vehicles, four missile launchers and four loader vehicles. The launchers are operated by three member crews which can ready the launchers for firing in 5 minutes. The launcher has 8 missile firing tubes for firing 145 kilogram high explosive fragmentation warheads which skim the water to hit naval vessels horizontally penetrating the bulkheads prior to explosion. They have a range of 260 km.

National Defense Command Center, January 22, 4867: Lieutenant General Pavel Ivanovich Podgornii, the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, announced today that the Defense Ministry and General Staff have today approved the recommendation of the Navy Staff that additional Anti Submarine Warfare aircraft be purchased.

Ten additional Tu-142MZ bombers will be built by the Tumirorich Aircraft Company, a division of the government conglomerate, State Aircraft Corporation. The Tu-142 was developed by the Tumirorich Design Bureau from a Tu-95 bomber by stretching the fuselage to accommodate antisubmarine warfare, avionics, reconnaissance and communications equipment. The Tu-142MZ has improvements over the TU-142 prototypes in the form of reinforced undercarriage, greater weaponry, increased payload, and greater range.

After silencing technology rendered traditional sonar less useful in submarine detection, explosive sound systems were developed to be used to locate deeply submerged submarines resulting in the Udar – 75 search and targeting device employed on the Tu – 142 MZ. The Udar -75 has been replaced by a newer target acquisition system for detecting surface and submerged submarines and communication with other ASW aircraft and its home base. Tumirovich has now developed the Zarechye sonar system compatible with the newest sonar buoys and achieving 50% more coverage than the Udar – 75.

The ten Tu-142MZ anti submarine aircraft will be assigned to the 16th Naval Air Wing at Kaiserburg Naval Base where twenty such units are already assigned and where Anti Submaine Command Headquarters is located.

DIFFERENCES WITHIN COALITION

Rodshyadam, August 10, 4867: Today, appearing on a panel at the Society of Political Theory 4867 Meeting held at Rodshyadam Sytate University, Citizen L.L. Bronstein, the Foreign Minister, responded to questions about differences of political opinion within the governing coalition:

Well first want to say the most important difference in the position of Krasnyy Narodnyy Soyuz with the Markov Petrovich Thesis and the New Constitution is that Markov Petrovich as a good Metzist holds steadfastly to atheism and the idea of religion as the opiate of the people. In our Tsereteli Corollary we note that the vast majority of citizens are religious, 84% being Hosian, and in the absence of a World Revolution, the sensible course to build socialism in one country is to allow people to be both socialist and religious if they will.

A difference in theory has also developed between theorists outside government and those inside the governing coalition Krasnyy Trigunskiy Soyuz over whether all industries should be nationalized. Krasnoye Dvisheniye nationalized key industries at the outset of the Socialist Revolution but to the best of my knowledge no whole industry has been nationalized since. Certainly state farms have grown to be a big part of our agriculture but there are still privately owned farms. Some industries such as electronic device manufacture it is just too late to consider. So those of in the parties in government have emphasized providing the benefits of socialism to the Sovereign People and running the industries we run well. Such as state farms and military aircraft. Not nationalizing for the sake of nationalizing.

Then there is the difference in foreign policy. There have always been those who only think of world revolution and establishing a socialist or communist international or comintern to promote it. We have worked diligently to no avail to support a socialist international. Hand in hand with that idea is only having relations with other socialist nations. We have tried to have supportive relations with other socialist states no matter how fleeting their existence. The predominant view throughout the governing coalition at present is that we are living in a Terra filled with nations with whom we must deal if the Socialist Revolution in One Country is to survive, and our allies should be trustworthy. That is our test; can we trust them.

But these are differences in approaches and priorities not objectives.

SGB GETTING DRONES

SGB Headquarters, January 17, 4868: Today VADM M.P. Vatunin, Director of the State Security Service (SGB), announced that Yuzran Flight Research Institute, part of the government conglomerate, State Aircraft Corporation, has designed an unmanned multipurpose helicopter for use in reconnaissance, police work, rescue operations and data transmitting. The SGB is ordering 15 of these UAV’s designated the Ka – 137 from the Kamenev Helicopter Company, also part of State aircraft Corporation. The SGB version will be automobile based.



The SGB Purchase is for use by the Border Guard Service in primarily for patrolling.

The Ka – 137 has a piston engine driving coaxial rotary blades and features a tailless spherical fuselage with 4 legs as landing gear. It has a maximum speed of 175 Kms per hour and a maximum range of 530 kms with endurance up to 4 hours and maximum ceiling of 5000 meters. The Ka-137 requires a ground crew of one operator and can carry 80 kilograms as an internal load..

GENERAL STAFF SELECTING DRONES

National Defense Command Center, December 19, 4868: Today LTG P. I. Podgornii, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, announced that the Yuzran Flight Research Institute working with fighter models from Trigunian Aircraft Company and Sulievievich Aircraft Company had developed an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) which would be produced by Sulievievich Aircraft Company, a part of the State Aircraft Corporation conglomerate as the Su – 70 Okhotnik.

Fifteen are being purchased initially by the Defense Ministry. Ten of the Su - 70 Okhotnik’s will be assigned to the Air Force although whether to disperse or concentrate them has not yet been decided. The Navy will receive two for the 16th Air Wing at Kaiserburg Naval Base and three for the 15th Air Wing at the Aleksandrovsk Naval Base.

The Su – 70 Okhotnik will be a heavy stealth unmanned aerial vehicle to be used as a reconnaissance and attack drone. The Okhotnil is of a flying wing design and made of composite materials with stealth coatings making its observation quite problematic. The Su-70 has a weight of 20 tons and a wingspan of 20 meters. It is powered by a single jet engine with turbofan and afterburner.

The Su -70 Okhotnik has a maximum speed of 1000 km per hour, a range of 6000 km but a combat range of 4000 km. It has two internal weapons bays with capacity for 2000 kilograms of guided and unguided munitions.

SGB GETTING MORE DRONES

SGB Headquarters, December 15, 4868: Today VADM M.P. Vatunin, Director of the State Security Service (SGB), announced that it was purchasing an additional fifteen Ka – 137 UAV’s from the Kamenev Helicopter Company, part of State Aircraft Corporation. About a year ago the SGB had made an initial purchase of fifteen of the Ka – 137 UAV’s for the Border Guard Service primarily for patrolling. They had proved quite satisfactory for that purpose so more were being ordered.

FINANCE MINISTER DISCUSSES ECONOMY

Lesnoos State University, February 15, 4870: Citizen C.L. Shaposhnikhov, the Finance Minister, appeared at a seminar at the Economics Department of Lesnov State University concerning inter action between national economies. After acknowledging that government predictions could be wrong, Comrade Shaposhnikhov suggested the uncertainty surrounding moves by the Deltarian Federation and the Vascanian Empire in the wake of their mutually destructive stalemate in Rapa Pile would likely have an impact on both stock markets and government economic policies:

With respect to a possible effort by the Vascanian Empire to recoup its losses by vastly increasing its crude oil production, that could well lead to an oil glut. Federativniyye Sotsialisticheskiye Respubliki Triguniya could mitigate that somewhat by reducing production but to be actually effective would require that other major oil producers also take action. Coordination is unlikely.

Accordingly, what we are really planning to do is have the Central Bank fix oil, nartural gas and oil derivative prices for domestic consumption at an existing higher rate so that production by Sambov Energy Corporation (Sambovenergetickorp), Trygunya Nefyanaya Kompaniya (Nefkomp) and other of our natonal producers remains profitable so they can weather the storm. We can use funds from past surpluses not new tax money to do this.

The Deltarian Federation has demonstrated it can create an economic downturn so we will have to be prepared for it to try and quickly rebuild its military by overtaxation or rerouting its existing appropriations to military spending either of which would have an adverse effect on its economy and more important panic its stock market which would be highly contagious.

So we have to be prepared to plug any holes in our safety net so our people will have food, clothing, shelter, medical care and income even if fewer have jobs. We can continue to operate government and government owned businesses to keep unemployment down. We can also loan funds to businesses that the Central Bank determines can survive and nationalize where absolutely necessary. We believe we are prepared.

But it would certainly be nice if the two belligerents in the Rapa Pile War would rebuild slow and easy so that there would be minimal disruption of their own economies and hence those throughout Terra. and there would then be actual benefit from defense contracts.

HELICOPTER AND FIGHTER TRANSFERS

National Defense Command Center, May 11 4870: Vice Admiral Arkady Andreyevich Yeshov, Assistant Chief of Staff for Naval Air, announced two sets of transfers of aircraft today.

The ten Ka-52K helicopter gunships with the 907th Air Wing on board the Rodshyadam and the four Ka-52K’s of the 19th Air Wing all stationed at the Zropol Naval Base as well as the five Ka-52K’s of the 11th Air Wing of the Petrovgrad stationed at Aleksandrovsk naval Base will be transferred to the Rodshyadam Naval Facility for routine exercises.

The Navy has been considering the disposition of the 37 Su-33 which were part of the air complements on the Petrovgrad and the Rodshyadam. The SU-33 is designed for carrier based operations for air superiority. Suvelievich Design Bureau improved on the SU-27 design with folding wings, strengthened undercarriage and greater lift capacity and maneuverability. The SU-33 has 12 guided missiles mounted for air superiority use as well as cluster bombs and unguided rockets for ground attacks. The SU-33 has been replaced by the MiG 29KR produced by Trigunian Aircraft Corporation, a division of the State Aircraft Corporation as our principal carrier based fighter.

VADM A.A. Yeshov also announced that the Defense Ministry and General Staff of the Armed Forces have approved the recommendation of the Chief of the Naval Staff to leave 10 of the SU-33’s at the Kaiserburg Naval Base in the 16th Air Wing where they have already been transferred.

10 of the SU-33 remaining will remain with the 19th Air Wing at the Zvropol Naval Base and 10 will remain with the 15th Air Wing at Aleksandrovsk Naval Base. The other 7 Su-33’s will be transferred to the Serenogorsk Repair Base

The Navy is known to be considering consolidation and renaming of the fleets and whether the Naval Guards Division should be consolidated at one location as well as whether to build any new carriers.

RAIL GAUGE DECISIONS

Zvropol, August 15, 4870: Citizen Lazar Moseievich Ziniviev, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, met with Ministry railroad managers for the Federal Socialist Republic of Zarvospol today to discuss what to actually do about the ongoing inconsistency of railroad gauges throughout the nation. Much of the movement of industrial and agricultural products, perhaps as much as 80%, includes transport by rail. After the meeting Comrade Zinoviev issued the following statement.

The Federal Socialist Republic of Brakav under Hulstrian influence long ago adopted as its standard gauge 1435 mm. Although there are some narrow gauge railroads of 750 mm these are entirely at this stage confined to self contained industrial, mining or forestry operations which do not interconnect or need to connect with other railroads. The Ministry has decided since Brakav is an island unto itself to simply leave well enough alone.

On Itasaarii, the situation is a little different. Railroad construction was later than elsewhere so the standard gauge in almost all instances was the standard Trigunian gauge of 1520 mm. But not quite everywhere. Some really early development in and around Spassk and Serenogorsk in the Federal Socialist Republic of Vrosnok used the standard Imperial Trigunian gauge of 1524 mm. There is also a fair amount of narrow gauge 1067 mm track some of which is for villages involved in forestry and peat harvesting or other self contained industrial or mining operation but some is connecting villages to the national grid. The decision is that all rail in Vrosnok and Kesnos that is not self contained will be 1520 mm. The estimate is that there really are not huge expanses to be replaced and so this should be able to be completed in three tears.

So let us look at Chadonia. In Radin, although there is a little 1524 mm track almost all is 1520 mm except for some self contained forestry, industrial and mining operations that are 1067 mm. Then there is Zarvospol. In and around Zvropol the Hulstrian influence has led to most track being 1435 mm gauge with a fair amount of narrow gauge 750 mm largely tied to self contained operations. Near and in Petrograd the gauge is the Imperial Trigunian gauge of 1524 with narrow gauge appearing here and there as 1067 mm gauge. The balance of Zavrospol is 1520 mm standard Trigunian gauge or narrow gauge of 1067 mm.

The decision is that throughout Chadonia any track connected to the national grid will be 1520 mm. If narrow gauge track is in a self contained operation it may continue as is. Frankly comrades, we recognize this is a massive undertaking but long overdue and it will now begin. In view oof our meeting today we believe this project can be completed in eleven years.
