New coalition era in the making

Postby Aristotle » Sat Dec 12, 2020 2:47 pm

The past few sessions of Parliament have been run by the Beluzia Renewal Party as a minority government, since the demise of the Beluzia Kingship Party which had previously formed a coalition with the BRP.

The BRP continues to hold the most seats in Parliament, but the UBWP party has won back the Presidency from the BRP and both the UBWP and the DSC have won one State each to the BRP's three states.

In keeping with these election results, the BRP is seeking to form a coalition government consisting of all three parties.

The process has begun of agreeing a fair split in cabinet positions, and negotiating which particular positions each party would prefer.

The expectation is that the new coalition will be formed soon and we will embark together on a new government for the betterment of Beluzia.

The latest election has again resulted in the Beluzia Renewal Party holding the most parliamentary seats, but without an outright majority.

In a new initiative of inter-party co-operation, the BRP has presented a Bill to Parliament consisting of three proposals which the PAL party included in its pre-election manifesto.

Having won one of the states in the election, the PAL is apparently deemed to be deserving of some representation of their policies in the setting of the legislative agenda of the nation.

Whether this is the first step towards a more formal BRP/PAL coalition remains to be seen.

The last two elections have been a two-horse race between the UBWP and their long time colleagues in the BRP.
Extraordinarily, both 4868 and 4872 elections resulted in exactly the same number of seats for each party - with only a difference of 4 seats between them.

It remains to be seen if the UBWP will renew the practice established by the BRP of attempting to reflect the clear divisions within the electorate by forming coalitions based on relative number of seats and by the number of states won. At the moment the UBWP is clinging to power on the basis of those 4 extra seats.

Once again the election was a closely fought battle between the BRP and the UBWP in 4876.
However, on this occasion the former party won by a narrow majority of six seats and has resumed government.

A few other opposition parties now exist in Beluzia, so it will be interesting to see if any of them can prevent the next election from being another two horse race.

Other News
Rachel Davis, national chairwoman of the Unionist Party, has announced that she will not be seeking the presidency, leaving Cassandra Hepburn-Smith the presumptive nominee for the 5010 Presidential Election. The Unionist Party will meet in 5009 to officially nominate Mrs. Hepburn-Smith unless she is challenged in the party primaries. Mrs. Hepburn-Smith is a member of the party's establishment and a former member of the BNIP. Party members see her as a unifier and trust that she will place in the top two as the UPB, the TPB, and the BNIP have surged forward as the most competitive parties. Mrs. Hepburn-Smith will be following thrice-failed presidential candidate Margaret Channing.

Ms. Channing went from being the little-known five percenter in 4998 to being a well-liked, well-viewed politician in 5002 when she received 17.41% of the vote. In 5006, Ms. Channing made her best showing, winning 19.13% of the popular vote. Now that she will not be serving as head of state, the first stage of the UPB is over. A new era of Unionist politics has begun as the progressive and moderate wings of the party continue to grow rapidly while the conservatives have become stagnated.

In the legislature, MPs Mr. William McHale (a Conservative) and Ms. Dorothy Winthrop (a Progressive) are expected to support Ms. Wynnefreede Brampton for the party leadership. Ms. Brampton, a mix of the Moderate and Establishment factions, has proven to be a very effective party leader in Parliament. With Mr. McHale serving as her deputy and Ms. Winthrop serving as her Senior Whip, the Unionists have solidly negotiated dozens of bills as promised in their annual party platforms. The Unionists have strongly supported unity on the national level and have pledged to continue to do so to keep the nation united. "We're meant to be the glue that holds the Parliament together," MP Jerry Wright said. "I stopped being an independent that voted for the lesser of all evils and joined the Unionists in 4998. I agreed to run on the ticket for MP in 4002. I have hope that our nation can and will be unified and understand what compromise is once more. After each election cycle, it has been the Unionist Party to propose a multiparty Cabinet and bring even the least cooperative parties on board. The UPB is the future of our country.

Once again, the Unionists are taking the lead on forming a Cabinet, this time more focused on policy rather than pure party representation. MPs William McHale and Wynnefreede Brampton have worked together closely to propose a Cabinet formation for the Beluzian government. With the Beluzian National Independence Party selecting the Prime Minister as they are the largest party in Parliament, the BNIP has also been asked to select the Minister of Science and Technology so that one party does not have too much partisan power. The Traditionalists, serving as the presidential incumbent's party, have been asked to select the Food & Agriculture and Trade & Industry ministers. The remaining positions are divided among the Unionists, the Progressive People's Party of Beluzia, and the Unsubmissive Beluzian Workers Party. The UBWP shall select the Ministers of Defence and Internal Affairs while the PPPB holds sway over selecting the Infrastructure & Transport Minister and the Environment & Tourism Minister. The Unionists shall select the Education & Culture, HSS, Justice, Finance, and Foreign Affairs Ministries.

This is a first for the typically apolitical nature that the Unionists have embraced. Typically, propose plans that give each party a proportional say in Parliament; this time, though, they have opted for a somewhat partisan plan that emphasized compromise between parties using Unionist leadership. Critics claim that this is a purely partisan ploy; supporters disagree. "I think that this is a good way to hold Parliament together," Traditionalist voter Andrew Peters said. "Sure, I may not care for a lot of their folks in the office, but they're more efficient at finding solutions than some of the parties are."

Traditionalists Vote Down Gov't Coalition
MPs across the political spectrum are making hay after the Traditionalists voted to abstain rather than support the Cabinet proposed by the Unionists. With 496 of the 650 member legislature supporting the move (with only the 154 Traditionalists refusing to vote on the matter), the coalition had universal support and was expected to pass unanimously thanks to deals made by UP leadership. Following the failed vote, however, UP leaders have been forced to cut Traditionalists from the Parliamentary leadership, forcing President Carter Crystal to potentially work with parties opposing her beliefs. The new Cabinet proposal places power in the hands of the UP, BNIP, PPPB, and UBWP-- leaving only the Traditionalists out of the loop. It is expected to pass without Traditionalist support.

Union Bay Press: Former PM Brooks speaks about Luthori crisis
5 January 5106

Former Prime Minister Tyrone Brooks has spoken out about the "Beluzian Missile Crisis" arising with Luthori. Brooks, 60, said that "The fact this came about shortly after there were talks about a new treaty is such a sad state of affairs. A treaty like that would have been a major goal of the Brooks administration, and now it's come crashing down. All I can really offer is that we do not, under any circumstance, try and escalate this further".

Tyrone Brooks served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Beluzia from 5084 to 5089.
