Orbeliani replaces Iashvili; the HDK prepares for elections
In a surprise move, barely six months before the 3543 elections Petre Iashvili, one of the veterans of the Union of Hobrazian Democrats (known by its Hobrazian abbreviation as HBK) has decided to resign as head of government, leaving that post to the hitherto Minister for the Enviroment and Tourism Mariam Orbeliani, who surprisingly won the consequent race to succeed Iashvili. Orbeliani is believed to have been chosen to give the HBK a fresh face to present to the electorate after two controversial terms in office, which have included reduction of immigration, major economic liberalizations and tax cuts. At the same time, the HBK announced that long-standing chairman and incumbent President of Hobrazia Georgi Pavishvili will run for a third term in the nations highest office.
The party has also unveiled its electoral platform for the coming term, in which its proposes to further reduce the tax burden and make state administration more efficient, as well as more controversial social policies, such as limiting state support for abortions and strengthening the role of the armed forces. According to political analysts, however, the next term is more likely to be dominated by the problem of bringing down the large budget deficit, with one stating that "the next four years are going to be pretty austere".
