New Left Dissolved!

In breaking news, President Olalla announces the dissolution of 'New Left', the reformed 'izquierda republicana'

According to a public statement, Olalla Stephenson announced her dissolving of the party, as part of her desire to "Close the chapter on the former communist era of Dolgavas" Olalla came to power during the collapsing days of the former dictatorship era. She personally oversaw the 3272 coup which removed General Secretary Itzal Azana from power within Izuierda Republicana. But, even after leading the reformed party into the 19 years of Popular Front government; public support remained restricted to a 1/3 of the electorate.

During the New Left governments - only - stint in power during 3292-3295 Olalla worked as President to both end the 2nd Republic and wind up her own party.

In the summer election of 3295 she launched her bid for power leading a new party the 'Whigs'. This new party represented a coalition of land owners, social progressives and economic liberals; and monarchists. Its success in securing a government in its own right spelt a decisive end for New Left which all but disappeared from public representation. Assigned to the dustbin of Dolgarian history, alongside the 2nd Republic.

Restoration Government!

The Whig government of 3295, led by Olalla Stephenson immediately tabled a motion to abolish the 2nd Dolgarian Republic. With the Progressive Greens, in opposition alongwith the now defunct New Left Party - the Whig government moved quickly to secure Green support for the move - to avoid social and political breakdown in Dolgava.

In Castle Tournai, hosted by the Duchess Ingrid de Tournai - a major landowner exiled during the communist years - the Whigs issued their decision to restore the throne to House Rothringen-Traugott, albeit a cadet branch under Georg Ludwig; to ensure Dolgarian independence maintained.

Public Endorsement

The 3297 election proved vital if the restoration government's decision to abolish the republic was to survive. And the outcome was a narrow success for the Whigs over the Progressive Greens.

With Olalla Stephenson announcing her retirement from politics, saying "my work here is done", it was the Earl Rosebery's job to retain power for the Whig government.

On a much higher turnout (up from 3294's 52% to over 66%!) the Whig leader retained the role of elected representative of Georg Ludwig (still to arrive in his new Kingdom).

The Earl increased Whig support from 3294s 20,518,548m to 24,952,353m; however New Leftist forces organised behind the Progressives en-masse, leading to the wafer-thin majority of just 794,080 over the Greens on 24,158,273m votes (an increase to 49.19%, up from 46% in 3294)

But bad news for the Whig government was the fact that the New Leftist voters largely broke behind the Greens in the Congress, meaning the Whig government lost its majority in the house of congress.
The body blow meant that the Baroness Olalla Granville would need to organise and lead a minority government, dependent on Green support to get any legislation passed.

But with the Whigs retaining power, it was proclaimed by the Earl Rosebery as "a public endorsement by the people for our king, and our new model monarchy".

Only time will tell if the social destruction of the communist period (3263-3272) and the chaotic 2nd Dolgarian Republic (3272-3294) is a closed chapter. Or will the political and social upheaval plague Dolgava into the next century? Only time will tell.

Rothringen-Traugott returns to Dolgavas



His Highness King Georg Ludwig I von Rothringen-Traugott, has formally arrived to Dolgavas today May 3298 (local time) to the new royalist anthem. Having formally been offered the throne in January 3298, Georg Ludwig represents the first Rothringen-Traugott to occupy the Dolgarian throne since the days of the personal union with the Imperial Crownlands of Greater Hulstria.

Following months of negotiation with His Imperial & Most Illustrious Lutheran Majesty Karl IV, Emperor of Hulstria, Wilhelm Roderick III; it was agreed that the cadet branch headed by Georg Ludwig would receive the throne. According to His Highness King Georg Ludwig I elected representative; Earl Rosbery; "this represents the future and the past combining for a unified future. The days of the 1st Republic, the communist dictatorship and 2nd Republic are over. Our royals have returned."

No comment has been formally issued by the Whig government as to precisely why it was felt necessary for a cadet branch of Rothringen-Traugott to be offered the throne - rather than a return to personal union. However sources close to leading Whig the Duchess de Tournai explain that it was "felt to be appropriate" to restore the royals while also "maintaining" Dolgarian independence.

Ancestry

Our new monarch, King Georg Ludwig is the son of the past Hulstrian Kaiser Karl IV who officially handed HM Georg Ludwig the Dolgarian throne after his passing.

HM Georg Ludwig is the younger brother of the current Hulstrian Kaiser, Leopold II. While this preserves the Dolgarian desire to avoid personal union once more; the two brothers would rule as Kings in our respective countries.

Marriage

HM Georg Ludwig is married to his wife, the Duchess Erzsébet von Sīkrags - one of the leading Dolgavan noble magnates. Their wedding means that all future offspring of 'House Ludwig' will share Rothingren and Dolgarian blood - a major factor for HM Georg Ludwig's selection by the Whig restoration government.

The Duchess Erzsebet von Sikrags Duchy has been made a Royal Duchy, to pass via matrilineal descent to the Queen's eldest daughter. Future Duchesses will thus also carry the privileged title address of 'Princesses' (of the bloody royal)

The Whig Supremacy

Following another general election, the Vācbaltiešu vigs partija (generally known as 'Whigs') have increased their representation in the Siema.

With 52.99% of the vote in the Siema, and 53.43% share of the vote for elected representative of HM King Georg Ludwig - it is clear the Whigs have not merely retained power but expanded their grip.

This represents the fifth Whig term in office consecutively. The Whig government has been in power since 3292, and has promoted a policy of tax reduction, deregulation, monarchical restoration and blocking agricultural reform.

According to the Prime Minister, Baron Adolf Tournai-Schwervig

"We will continue to work with the opposition Greens, continuing the unique Dolgarian principle of power sharing"

Which ministries the Greens will be offered however remains to be seen, though they are expected to be peripheral and largely irrelevant.

In an exclusive news update, the royal palace in Enkure; Lirath Novad has confirmed the rumours of an imminent royal wedding.

Negotiations between Telamon and Dolgarian governments are nearing conclusion; with the Dolgarian Seima speedily passing the Friendship Treaty in an all-night sitting.

Palace spokesman, The RH Rubricht Marquess Lirath named the prospective future Dolgarian Queen:

HG Lady Selene Arinidi of Lirona is to become HM Selene Arinidi Rothringen-Ludwig, Queen-Consort of Dolgava. In order to bed her down into Dolgarian noble culture, she is to be created the Duchess of Karzon; a title to be passed on to any female heirs she may have.

According to the Vacbaltescu Vigs Partija leader; and Elected Representative of HM, the Duchess Ingrid de Tournai:

This Friendship Treaty will usher in a new closeness between not just the governments of our two nations, but also act as the doorway through which the Rothringen-Ludwig dynasty shall continue to flourish.

In the spring of 3292 a new political movement successfully siezed power; effectively brining to an end the 2nd Dolgarian Republic.

A coalition of major landowners, aristocrats, royalists and capitalists arranged a meeting at Castle Tournai, seat of power for the de Tournai family. Funded by these sources, the group organised the 'Whig Party', which had a stated aim of reversing nearly a century of Dolgavan political development. From the Communist-era dictatorship of Itzal Azana, through to the social democracy of the 2nd Republic; the Whig Party captured power with nearly 60% of the vote in 3292.
This began over 40 years of uninterrupted political preeminence in Dolgava. This period, still continuing, is known internationally as 'the Whig Supremacy'.

Restoration Monarchy

The period 3292-3312 is generally known as the 'Restoration Monarchy', during this period the Whigs successfully restorated the Rothringen Dynasty to power as a constitutional monarchy. During this period, there was no barrier to Whig legislative power, with them holding a plural 2/3 of parliamentary seats. This saw significant constitutional changes.
Monarchy was restored, followed by the closure of the 'Popular Assembly', replaced with the historic and traditional 'Siema' which was to have 251 seats - and no more or less. Strong central government control became the watch-word of the day, as local government was stripped of their powers. This was done so that major economic changes could be forced through.

Economic Rebalancing

Throughout the entire Whig Supremacy, the primary policy agenda overarching everything else has been the need to rebalance the domestic economy.
During the Restoration period until 3312, over 60% of GDP was dependent on state spending. By 3335, it had fallen to less than 25%; ushering in a new consumer-driven economy, totally interlinked to global capitalist markets.

Income tax reform, though still ongoing, continues to see the tax brackets on the lowest and wealthiest being reduced in concert. Dolgavan budget deficits have also become something of the past, as the Whigs reforms have led to an explosion of free-market driven growth.

Today, with economic liberalisations still being expanded upon, GDP now sits comfortably over 18bn, whereas it was less than 15bn in 3292, at the close of the failed anarchic Second Republic.

Political Challenge, and weakening support

Despite continuing to remain the dominent party of Dolgava, the Whigs have continued to see their domestic platform slip; with the 'short-defeat' of January-November 3331; when a coalition of Labour Party, Greens and LibDems successfully ousted the Whig leadership from the Elected Representative of HM. The Whigs recaptured power on a popular platform of tax-cuts (aided and abeted by the LibDem 'betrayal' as they switched support to the Whigs).
Since then, the Whigs have failed to improve upon a regular electoral showing of support between 41-48%. Gone, it seems, are the days when the Whigs could easily command over 60% of the electorate.
Today, a coalition of hostile leftist parties continue to unite to block major Whig reforms.

Many are now asking, are the Whigs 'rulling' or are they just 'reigning?'
