Since forming in Solentia, the Faschistische Nationalbewungung had a swift rise to power, claiming at its peak 335 out of 750 senate seats. The FNB introduced and pushed through legislation bills which would radically change Solentia’s legislative structure and push the country close to the brink of war. They were able to withdraw Solentia from 30 international treaties. Before their Senators could even finish serving their legislative terms, the FNB called for early elections, placed their votes, and resigned all their positions.
It wasn’t long before the FNB reformed and they came back to participate in these early elections. They won just under two-thirds of the Senate seats they previously held, dwindling their power. Again they reintroduced radical legislation as the remaining senate was trying to determine how to repair the legislative mess the country was left with. Without only 200+ Senators instead of 300+ Senators, they were not able to accomplish as much as they had desired.
What they were able to accomplish was to resign their seats yet again after calling for early elections and placing their vote. Early elections places all bills being voted upon back to debate status and this effectively slowed the legislative process to a crawl, allowing significant time to pass before the FNB’s damage could be undone, and further reinforcing the length of time that legislation which was slated to be voted off would remain in effect.
Recently, the FNB has reformed yet again and has already introduced radical legislation to the Senate in the form of the Communist Defence [sic] Act. This legislation would write into law the effective banning and imprisonment of communist or socialist organizations, would disallow Left-wing organizations from advocating their political views, and requires the disbanding of violator organizations by force.
We have reached out to the leaders of the Solentian Secular Realist Party, who now holds 282 Senate seats, and the Presidential Office, for comment. Here’s what they had to say:
“The greatest offense by the FNB is turning their tails and running from office after their constituents have voted them in. They have abandoned their people time and time again and the citizens know it. The election results showed their lack of confidence in the FNB the first time they ran away, and we believe the elections looming on the horizon will show that the Solentian people take issue with being fooled twice,” says President Alexander A. Laudenslager.
He continues on the subject of the Communist Defence Act to say, “We value Democracy and Freedom in Solentia. We welcome opposition in politics and feel that opposition is imperative for a healthy democracy. This Bill simply reinforces the FNB’s absolute disrespect for the democratic process through which they earn their Senate seats and is an insult to the Solentian citizenry. The Bill is purposely written in a poorly-worded way so that the FNB would hope to achieve the suppression of any ideology but their own. After all, they publicly wish to rename our country to the Facist [sic] Dictatorship of Solentia. The Bill and the FNB is something of a laughing point, a joke amongst our members and their words and actions only serve to strengthen the comedy, however it is our duty to take all Bills presented to the Senate seriously.”
We pressed President Laudenslager to give his opinions on what this Bill could mean for the future of Solentian Politics. He says, “While I did say we value opposition in democracy and feel it’s a requirement for its health, we do take issue with a party who seeks to eliminate opposition with legislation and restrict free speech and participation of a political nature. If the FNB finds the gall to submit this Bill to a vote, we see no issue in fighting fire with fire, introducing a Bill of our own and seeing which one comes out on top. To those who may view this as hypocrisy, I remind you, we value and respect opposition within the Senate, we do not value and respect those who seek to undermine democracy and implement a dictatorship. We have been tolerant of the FNB as a recognized political party, introducing such a Bill to a vote might well serve to change our minds.”
With that, the President retired from the press conference with a wave and a smile.
