Careless Senator risks opening Party split over Peerage
Image

HALION – Former Shadow Internal Affairs Secretary, Senator Ivan Beauchamp, has risked opening a Party-wide split over the issue of Peerage. The Chairman of the Maundy Club (the CMP’s Unionist and Centrist Grouping so-named after it’s formation on Maundy Thursday in 2800), has sparked a debate that is highlighting the differences of opinion between the CMP.

The factionalism became apparent when Dr. Beauchamp accidently let-slip to a journalist that Party Leader James Clarke was planning a Senatorial debate on Peerage after the election. Outraged, Dr. Beauchamp had confronted the Party Leader and had eventually been removed from his position. The public reason for this had been Dr Beauchamp’s support for the Religious Right “coup-that-never-was” in January 2942. Dr.Beauchamp has now confirmed that his reason for supporting Mr. Clarke’s removal had been concerning the row over meritocracy and peerage.

Mr. Clarke has planned a debate on a suitable way of re-creating Lords and Knights, though his Office claims the plan had never been to create a full Lordly system, rather a system of “rewards for the average citizen”.

Unionists are now calling for the removal of Mr. Clarke however lack enough Senators to force a coup. It is thought that the issue will now be brought before the 2616 Committee, though because of it’s private nature, it may have already been discussed. The Chairman of the Committee, Draco Lehres has refused to comment.

Mr. Clarke’s office is now facing a rebellion. So close to an election, it is unclear what the result shall be. Mr. Clarke may force the rebels to sit-tight and let the election serve as a rationale for resignation. Alternatively, the rebels may have a candidate in-mind for replacement and may strike now to give a replacement enough time to build-support before polling day.

Jansen Rides the Tide
An unknown Senator from Shinatawa sees his campaign gain momentum

A Solvernment News Network! Report

Olinthus, Shinatawa - Shinatawans have never been known for powerful political establishments or famous family dynasties. But now the state is receiving attention for an up and coming Federal Independent Senator who is gathering momentum in his party's primary.

News of Senator Brent Jansen's strong showings in Fuwan, the party's first primary state, emerged quickly today and spread rapidly throughout the party and its respective interest groups. The junior Senator from Shinatawa, Jansen has been a modest and quiet Senator who has built an independent but solid track record during his short career in state politics and his brief time spent on Capitol Hill. Analysts have been surprised by the young Senator's ability to garner support in a primary with several political heavy weights, including former Senate Warden and now Governor Nathan White.

Image
I'm in this not for the royalties as Supreme President and a page in the text books. I'm interested in giving a voice to citizens who aren't part of the political mainstream, who are outsiders to a system that feels foreign to them because they're not part of the good ol' boys. My campaign stands to strike down just that and we're starting from the inside of this party. - Brent Jansen

Adding to the momentum hours after Jansen's Fuwan victory, the environmental lobby Solentian Generation endorsed the Jansen campaign. In a written statement released to the press, Solentian Generation wrote: "While the field of candidates this primary is promising and tenured, we are especially drawn to Senator Brent Jansen for his exceptional work keeping our environment safe and clean. Senator Jansen's work in the State Senate proved his leadership on environmental issues when he authored a bill regulating waste management and pollutants. With confidence, we place our endorsement with Senator Jansen."

The decision by Solentian Generation to endorse Jansen is a huge support boost for the party's strong environmental base. With Shinatawa a relatively politically neutral landscape for the party, it is expected the Jansen Campaign's home field advantage will also land him a victory in the state. Some analysts are predicting a Jansen victory.

Brent Jansen is Party Supreme Presidential Candidate
After winning the party's primary overwhelmingly, the Jansen campaign focuses on August

A Solvernment News Network! Report

Olinthus, Shinatawa - In a press release by Federal Independent Party President Christopher Lefolst, it has been made official that Senator Brent Jansen is the party's nominee for the general election next year. Senator Jansen shall be running as the party's official, endorsed Supreme Presidential candidate.

A primary that no analysts could foresee ending this way, Jansen proved a formidable candidate in the state primaries. The halfhearted campaign of Fuwan Governor Nathan White has been partly to blame for the popular former Senate Warden's inability to win the primary, while the movement to draft Senator Hugh Bridgen never succeeded. Lorain Mayor Vincent Genchyki's inability to win any precincts other than his home town of Lorain and the immediate surrounding communities derailed any chance of a Genchyki success story. Jansen proved to be the only candidate sincerely interested in the seat or with the proper gusto to pull the votes his way.

Image
Federal Independent voters have made it clear: the ol' boys network is over. - Brent Jansen

Jansen has reeled in the support of the Federal Independent Party's main interest groups, notably the Solentian Federation of Labor, the Solentian Civil Liberties Union, the National Council for Fiscal Responsibility, and his crucial first endorsement by Solentian Generation. The party has yet to give its feedback. Most Federal Independents proved quiet this campaign, while normally outspoken and intent on pushing their priorities to the party's forefront interests. Some speculate this is due to a certain level of unsureness and lack of confidence in Senator Brent Jansen, who has vocalized his intent to "break the ol' boy network" and bring more power in the party outside of the Bailen Building and Capitol Hill. And while Jansen has won the support of Federal Independent primary voters, who overwhelmingly nominated him, there is something to be said between being a voter giving power and being a party member with power.

Party President Christopher Lefolst welcomed the results in an upbeat tone and said the party would be offering its full, unconditional support to the Jansen campaign.

"Senator Jansen has won this party's primary and proven himself to Federal Independents throughout the nation. We therefore will be arming Senator Jansen with the most powerful electoral weapon in the country: our endorsement. We'll be there with you, Brent, the whole way through," said Lefolst to reporters in front of the Bailen Building. Fuwan Governor Nathan White has already endorsed Jansen in a show of party unity along with Mayor Vincent Genchyki.

In a fact that has been widely unknown previously until now, it has been reported that Brent Jansen is a relative to former Federal Independent Party President Jan Jansen. Jan Jansen's party presidency is regarded as the worst in the party's history, with the party shrinking into a the most consistent minority party in the Senate and failing to win any national elections. Prior to his service as Party President, however, Jansen was known well for his exceptional work in Fuwan as the state's director of its health care system. Though it has yet to be widely discussed, there are questions is political misfortune will strike Brent Jansen as well.

CPS hails Supreme President Brown, exciting times for Solentia

HALION - Eruptions of joy were common inside CPS voting stations across Solentia as the final votes were tallied in tonight's election: Solentia has another Conservative Supreme President.

Helen Brown, the successor to popular CPS incumbent James Harding, put an end to any doubt as to her electability when she defeated Federal Independent challenger Brett Jansen in the second round by an even wider margin than James Harding beat Jeremy Frawl in 2942. With the help of a second round endorsement from the Utilitarian Party, Supreme President Brown was able to claim 54.15% of the vote, giving her what many call the most important Supreme Presidency in history.

Image
While the CPS maintained control of the Supreme Presidency, it lost seats in the Senate. The FIP lost seats as well, while the Conservative and Morality Party doubled its Senate representation, the largest gain of the election.

In spite of the fact that the CPS lost an ever important 4 seats in the Senate, many in the party are ecstatic with the results of the election.

"We've seen now that the people of Solentia want a CPS Supreme President nominating their Supreme Court Justices," said CPS Chairwoman Andrea Bryant.

She was referring, of course, to what many believe to be the most important change in Solentian government since the foundation of the Federal Republic. Assuming the passage of the Supreme Court of Solentia Act of 2943, the duty to appoint 3 Justices (including the Chief Justice) to the 1st Supreme Court of Solentia will fall to Supreme President Brown. These Justices will be an integral part of the Solentian judicial system for nearly a quarter of a century, and as such are immeasurably powerful pieces of the political fabric of the nation.

Already she has announced the candidate for Chief Justice to be current Minister of Justice Alexander Davis, and analysts hypothesize that at least one of the other nominations will be offered to a Justice backed by the FIP. Each of the three Justices will need Senate approval of 50% + 1 vote, which is potentially disruptive, as the rumored UPS-CPS coalition has exactly 50% of the Senate vote.
Just a bunch of shit.

Dramatic End for Big Jim
Image
Mr. Clarke leaves Kennedy House for the last time as Leader.

HALION – With a majority of the 2616 Committee voting in favour, the CMP has officially and very publically dumped James Clarke from his position as Leader. Following a poll of all 16 Senators and the 160 Councillors that the CMP holds, James Clarke lost the vote 60-116. The vote was called by Senator Draco Lehres, the Committee Chairman after a letter with 6 Senatorial signatures was delivered to his desk, enough to spark a VONC.

Mr. Clarke remains a Senator and shall not be competing in the subsequent leadership election. It has been announced that Mr. Lehres is accepting nominations. Nominees must have the support of 2 Senators to be eligible for the ballot.

It has already been announced that Nicholas d’Amiens and Anthony Benjamin shall be running for the post and have delivered their nominations to Senator Lehres.

The New Face of Conservatism
Image
Mr. Astor inherits an increasingly Rightist Party.

HALION – Senator Martin Henry Edward Astor, distant relation to both the York and Kennedy Dynasties, has been confirmed at the new Leader of the Conservative and Morality Party. Mr. Astor defeated rival Anthony Benjamin in the membership round with a landslide 134,446 to 67,940.

Mr. Astor was the traditionalist favourite to win and the decision taken by Party members indicates a desperate desire to move away from the Unionism and progressive Conservative approach of the last century. Former Leader Jim Clarke has accepted a position as the Party’s Campaign Coordinator and will be helping Mr. Astor and his team in organising future election battles. Mr. Clarke was the first Conservative leader in 60 years not to have been elected Supreme President.

Martin Astor, of Fuwan, is a member of the wealthy Dynasties that still hold sway in the CMP. He was elected on a “New Right” campaign and will directing policy towards a “Tory” model. Mr. Astor is a known supporter of peerage and meritocracy, advocating a system of rewards for the social-climbing citizenry. He will likely bring such plans and proposals to the table that were left in draft under the Clarke team.

Much of the CMP bench has changed with the election and with Mr. Astor replacing the remnants of Unionism from the team. Notable appointments are newly-elected Tumaini N'Diayé as Deputy Leader, Cardinal Callaghan as Religion Spokesman, former Navy Captain Henry Spicer as Defence Spokesman and former Deputy Leader Catherine Keller as Education Spokesman.

Mr. Astor said about his appointment; “I am grateful for the trust that the party has shown for me on all levels and I shall endeavour to take our message to the people of Solentia.”

Tory Party: Solentia’s “New Right”
Image
Mr. Astor is intent on rebranding the Party.

HALION – CMP Leader Martin Astor has surprised many by persuading the Party’s Leadership Committee to consent to a name change. The Party, which will still officially be the Conservative and Morality Party, will run-elections and accept documentation under the name “Tory Party”.

The word “Tory” is an old colloquial term for the CMP membership that evolved from the word “Torrent”. The word is used because of the way that the party dramatically shifts in the polls and can landslide elections suddenly and fall just as fast. The word has been used for hundreds of years however the party never saw fit to officially use it. Mr. Astor stated that he felt it was right to “recognise a word that the public know-us by. We are probably referred to as Tories more often than our long-hand name.”

He insisted that both terms would be acceptable and the name CMP had not died. “Unlike name changes in the past, we are still officially and legally the CMP.” said Party Chairman Robert Naylor-Byrne.

Mr. Astor is intent of rebranding the Party after continuous failings to make gains over the last 20 years. Mr. Astor gave a stunning speech at the party spring forum calling for a “white-wash” of the Party. He said that the Party had a lot to offer but a lot to gain.

Mr. Astor is an astute and careful politician which makes him a stark contract to his predecessor. Jim Clarke was a much more colourful and vibrant character, describing himself as a “bottom-up-grassroots sort of chap.” Needless to say, Mr. Astor shall not be continuing Mr. Clarke’s weekly tradition of inviting top business men round to his home for drinks, something Mr. Clarke called “Beer with the Boys.” One Party official described the change in terms of gastronomy; “You need to think of him [Martin Astor] as a dessert. Jim was the bulky meant course that laid down the groundwork and Martin is going to be putting the finishing touches on.”

Tory involvement in bribe scandal?

Image

HALION - Solentian politics is known to ba a dirty business. Mighty, and mostly wealthy, groups of interest promote their agenda by influencing politicians across the nation. Has the Tory Party become the most recent snip in the shopping cart?

Rico R.* (* Name changed by editor to protect anonymity), a waiter at an upperclass restaurant at Halion, has reportedly seen Tory officials meet Sidney Chang, chairman of the National Atomic Energy Association on March 22 in said restaurant. "They made a very suspicious impression on me", Rico R. is quoted.

Since the NAEA left our calls unanswered, the nation's eyes are now directed at the Tory Party. Tell us the truth, Mr. Astor!

Solentian Supreme Court Justices take seats for first time in history

HALION - The first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Solentia, Alexander Davis, flanked by the six Associate Judges, was introduced to the nation by Supreme President Helen Brown today. The seven Justices took office after an exhausting Supreme Court creation ordeal that began with the introduction of the Supreme Court of Solentia Act of 2943 and culminated finally today in front of the Supreme Court Building.

Image
Former Minister of Justice Alexander Davis became the first Chief Justice of the Solentian Supreme Court after Supreme Presidential nomination and a Senate confirmation vote of 79 - 0, with 21 abstentions.

Chief Justice Davis formally resigned his previous office as Solentian Minister of Justice, prompting Supreme President Brown to propose a new cabinet, which is expected to pass, as it is the same formation as the current cabinet, and simply replaces the Chief Justice.

As Minister of Justice, Davis introduced the aforementioned piece of legislation and began the Supreme Court creation process. For this reason, both the Supreme President and Senate believe him to be the right man for the first Chief Justiceship.

Joining Chief Justice Davis on the first Court are Associate Justice Harold Ollerenshaw (appointed by the Conservative and Morality Party), Associate Justice Hanna Bentham-Mill (Utilitarian Party of Solentia appointment), Associate Justice Daniel Adon (Federal Independent Party appointment), Associate Justice Anthony Bronson (CPS appointment), and Associate Justices Sarah Watkins and John Paul White, both of whom were nominated by Supreme President Brown and approved by the Senate.

Of interest is the fact that already the Senate confirmation of candidates has created road bumps for the Supreme President. Associate Justice Sarah Watkins was a compromise candidate after the Supreme President's first candidate, Michael Newman, was rejected by the Senate on disagreements about racial supremacy. Senator Keith Juras (Tory) said: "My Party is one of equality and justice for all. Whilst we respect the right of Mr. Newman to express his opinion and to campaign for the, quite reasonable, rights of the Solentian, we cannot in good faith place our support in a Justice who would deem the rights of some to be above the rights of others based purely on race."

Conservative leadership 'worried' by Axis victory in Kalopia

ALYA - Solentia has never been active internationally. The last notable non-Conservative or RadNat foray into international politics was the Solentia-Wantuni friendship pact that made Federal Independent founder George Bailen famous. That was 2400. Wantuni no longer exists.

So despite the fact that the Conservative Party of Solentia or its subsidiaries has from time to time attempted to open the notoriously isolated nation to the rest of Terra, it's still only the rare moment when a Solentian politician will directly address the issues of the world beyond Solentia's borders. But today in Alya, Nukeya, as close to the Kalopian border as Solentian politicians are likely to go, CPS up-and-comer Grant Randall addressed a party gathering to discuss the political situation in Solentia's western neighbor.

Image
Grant Randall, a candidate for CPS Chairmanship in the next primary, spoke to supporters in Alya about Axis domination of Majatra.

"I know," said Randall to a crowd of 5,000 CPS members. "That in Halion there's a tendency to ignore the world outside our borders. Senators will debate for years how to spend a budget surplus in Orame but ignore the millions of children suffering and dying all across Terra. Some of the parties in the Senate will tell you that this is the way it has always been; that 'Solentia first' is the best Solentia, and that to nose around in the business of other nations will lead to other nations nosing in ours. But I ask you, is this kind of nationalism, this isolationism, this naivety really the way that the world ought to be run? People are dying and we have the means to help. Should we not help just because we don't want to risk our own discomfort?

"I say no. I reject the isolationism of the past. Terra in general and Majatra in particular is engulfed by a massive superalliance which exploits the weak for the benefit of the strong, and Solentians are not stupid. Four of Majatra's sixteen nations are not Axis-signatories, and that number will likely soon be three, following the defeat of the Kalopian Regime Coalition only miles from here.

"This superpower has stifled all competition; Zardugal, Luthori, Rutania and Vanuku grow rich upon the backs of enslaved Dovani natives in colonies which cover half of Terra while Selucia and Al Badara, both Majatran Axis nations, stand on the brink of war. Where is the benefit for the Majatran? Solentia stands as a testament to the fact that nations may survive without the 'protection' of the Axis, and I use that term loosely, who is the Axis defending signatory nations from but itself? The Zardugali, the Luthori, these are the aggressive imperialists of the world. Globalists that would see the expansion of their empires on the backs of smaller Axis nations.

"So I beg you, nations of Majatra and of all Terra. Consider your place in the power structure which the Axis leadership has created. Do you or they truly benefit more from your silent consent to their imperialism? We as Solentians must consider aligning ourselves with the nations of our continent which reject Axis globalism. We as Majatrans and as Terrans must do this. We must stand against the Axis in favor of our neighbors, who do not use us for their own advancement. We must forge a Majatran Union and defend ourselves from foreign influence in favor of continental allies. Already the Jelbanians are rejecting Axis influence! Rise, nations of Terra. Throw off the yolks of your colonialist oppressors!"
Just a bunch of shit.

Conservatives outraged over 'libelous' assault on Supreme President Brown

HALION - A recent campaign advertisement authorized by the Left Radical Party has left Conservative Party supporters stunned by its audacity. For a party which has focused its recent attention on international issues, the ad comes as a firm reminder that internal politics are still as volatile, if not more, as they've ever been.

The LRP is a relatively new party to Solentian politics, one that CPS leadership stresses is 'on the fringe' of respectable Solentian government. Following the ad, the extra-parliamentary party which received slightly under 603 times fewer votes than the CPS last election, was the focus of sharp criticism from many in the political world who are not accustomed to direct attacks on the Supreme President, a position usually above reproach in spite of political alignment.

"Matthew Fisher and the LRP have proposed some crazy things, but this ad really takes the cake," said political commentator Zach Reilly on a popular Halion news show. "They were the only ones to oppose [Solentian Supreme Court Chief Justice] Alexander Davis, they coupled with the Federal Independents to propose massive, pointless communist bills, but this ad is just really below anything we've seen in Solentian politics for years. You don't attack the Supreme President... You just don't."

Supreme President Brown, who was reportedly meeting with children at a school in Tesuhen when the ad first aired, was understandably outraged.

"Fisher and the LRP have made themselves an enemy in the CPS, obviously. The ad was so far out of left field that no one saw it coming, did they? It's just plain libelous. The Court isn't stacked in any direction, Mr. Fisher. I nominated [FIP endorsed] Associate Justice [John Paul] White, and the LRP is practically the FIP's lapdog. How much more do you want? An LRP Justice? You've spent three years in Solentia, Mr. Fisher, forgive me if I don't put an LRP Justice on the Court before you've learned where the Senate Building is.

"To insinuate that the CPS exploits children is to expose a sincere naivety about the nature of Solentian society. As terrible as it is that children need to work to support their families, there are cases where regulated child labor is the only thing keeping working children and their families alive. To ignore this fact and take away their income is negligence disguised as morality, the worst kind.

"Funding hasn't been touched by the CPS or any party in Solentia since the passage of the Budget Act of 2938. We did not cut any funding, merely shifted preschool education away from bureaucratic inefficiency in the public sector to private enterprise. Our schools are the better for it, and I applaud the Utilitarian Party in coordinating that victory!

"The fact remains that the LRP has made no friends with this advertisement. In a time when Terra as a whole faces world-shattering decisions, we cannot be focusing on the petty squabbles of an extra-parliamentary radical and his band of lunatics. The Left Radical Party represents change for Solentia, indeed; communism, authoritarianism, and a jealous sort of politicking which is low even by Solentian standards."
Just a bunch of shit.
