Census To Be Held
First census in nearly half a millenium
September 28, 3986

The Executive Council has announced that Kalopia-Wantuni will be holding its first countrywide census in 457 years in 3990. Censuses are deeply controversial in the divided country with smaller minorities particularly opppsed to them as they lead to the questioning of formulas used to calculate their political representation.

The once large Sessoldian, Siphinian, Arbanian and Istochkniac minorities have been aggressively driven to assimilate into thr two major ethnic groups, the Kalopians and Wantunis through the use of language imperialism and outright marginalisation . During the past five centuries, several outbreaks of intercommunal violence have seen many members of the smaller minorities leaving for neighbouring Jakania and Deltaria where closely related cultural and ethnic groups are found in large numbers.

Religious leaders have expressed deep concerns over the decision. Hosian and Ahmadi leaders have, both called on the,Government to cancel the planned census. Secular activists have dismissed this as a tactic to avoid the official recognition of just how secular the country has become, driven largely by disgust at religious leaders' well established practice of fostering religious violence to drive out religious minorities and proseltysers from their 'turfs'

Census Troubles
June,4, 3986

The Kalopian-Wantuni central government, the Executive Council has been accused of ignoring the increasing number of intercommunal attacks following its announcement that it will hold a controversial national census in 3990. The largest ethnic minorities are said to be carrying out pogroms against smaller minority communities, displacing tens of thousands to neighbouring countries. The general disorder on Kalopia-Wantuni's western border has made this crisis become relatively unnoticed as,rogue drug cartels, slave catchers and Deltarian Majatran refugees battle for dominance and against local 'defence committees'.

The Executive Council's lack of interest is thought to be driven by two factors. The first one are political considerations - any attempt to stabilise the western border regions would require the hiring of thousands of extra mercenaries and likely necessitate a tax hike, something the freeholder electorate is extremely sensitive to. The second reason is that this is just not a problem for the freeholder class who live in highly secured gated commnities and the wealthier parts of the country are policed by better trained mercernaries, leaving the marauding Jelbek mercenaries for the poorer areas.

Ethnic Pogroms Intensify
December 1, 3986

The situation on the Kalopian-Deltarian and Wantuni-Jakanian borders continues to deteoriate as vigilante ethnic mobs continue driving out small minorities from the northern Kalopian heartlands and the increasingly Wantuni dominated south. Much of the conflict is in the western theme of Siphina which is basically a patch of numerous segregated ethnic hamlets. At least 25 people have been killed in the ongoing pogroms there.

All levels of government remain silent although the Executive Council has deployed hundreds of extra troops to secure the major western trade routes and sites favoured by members of the freeholder class. The leadership of the Freehold Republic are instead more concerned with appeasing voters by passing a constitutional amendment limiting total public spending at 12% of GDP and banning direct taxes except for wartime periods.

Bleeding Shifine
January 2. 3989

Violence and instability has intensified in the western theme of Shifine as the March 3990 census approachrles. The Siphinians - the largest ethnic group in the theme have been hard at work driving out long detested minorities through suspiciously well organised campaigns. Through 3988 as many as 700 people were killed while tens of thousands of Arbanians and Istochniaks have fled west into Deltaria passing the virtually anarchical Kalopian-Deltarian border where drug runners and such other pleasant crews reign.

The silence of the Executive Council increasingly unnerves several freeholders who are deeply concerned that the entire republic might soon fall under the weight of violence and instability grip@ping the west. The fact that the Freehold Republic is sandwiched between Deltaria and the pro Indralan Chann Republic worries many of its leaders as conflict has begun on three continents with Deltaria a leading participant and both countries are strongly economically linked with Kalopia Wantuni.

A number of leading Freehold politicians are organising themselves into a faction to oppose the extreme limited goverment policies currently in place. It includes many in the powerful Fisnik family who are major landowning noble family in Shifine and heirs to the legendary 37th century adventurer Kostaq Fisnik ruler of Kalopia Wantuni Barmenia and Jelbania successively.

The cull of the minimalists
June 28, 3992

Moderates within the Great Freeholder League have in a stunning upset ousted the long dominant minimalist faction led by figures such Finance Councillor Giannis Apostolou. Two years after the bloody census of 3990, the western theme of Shifine remains highly unstable. The moderates had long called for the sending of an experienced military leader to quell the violence and restore order in the west. Now, they are finally able after organising a special Council election and claiming 10 of the 13 seats in the Executive Council, led by Countess Ariadne Caragiu the longtime Foreign Affairs Councillor, dismayed at the extremism of the minimalists. This comes just six months before the next election and many moderates, many of the members of the nobility of the different nations felt that only a moderate face could keep the expected losses to the progressive socialist opposition, minimal.

The newly elected Council has announced that it will send Bledi Pasha Fisnik, a scion of the powerful Fisnik noble family to restore order in Shifine and the west. The 38 year old previously in the Executive Council for 12 years and his family's personal militia will form the bulk and base of the 'Stabilisation Mission in the West'. The national army the Stabilisation Force has fallen on hard times, with many of its favourite recruiting grounds dry , the men of those countries remaining home to defend their homelands and ravage those of their enemies. It has serious shortages of men, with some saying the standing army might have fallen below 40,000, far below the minimum 50,000 mandated by the law that established it.

League Divisions
February 3, 3993

The Caragiu led 'moderate' faction has survived a near catastrophic split as witnessed in the last Executive Council election. Many of the so called minimalist Great Councillors stood together and voted against the return of an Executive Council led by Countess Ariadne Caragiu. The Countess had a trick up her sleeve and approached the Patriotic Socialist opposition which had won 64 seats, forming an alliance which won 363 out of 635 votes, garnering 11 seats for her moderates and 2 for the socialists in the Executive Council. The Countess might have managed to get herself and her allies re-elected to government but this comes at what is likely to prove a great cost. The previously informal factionalisation in the Great Freeholder League is becoming more formal with minimalists in particular forming their own caucuses and openly criticising their moderate partners.

Kalopia is no more
In a snap election triggered by a reduction of the length of term by the previously ruling party, the Wantuni Anarcho Capitalists won convincingly with a super majority on their election promise of abolishing the Republic and privatising all institutions, therefore basically ending the existence of a nation in the area commonly referred to as Wantuni.
After the big win for Thomas Lloyd Jr., who ran for the old position as president, the party did not hesitate long before putting their election promises up for a vote in front of the old Assembly.
In the future the Area commonly referred to as Wantuni will be managed by private organisations formed by its inhabitants.

ENIST Energia Istaliana announces major investment in the Mossavi region.

Yesterday, ENIST announced their plans to start with the exploitation of oil fields recently detected near the coastal city Sudbury in Mossavi. With the bureaucratic hurdles of the former government gone, this endeavour promises to not only be profitable for the company, but also create many new jobs for the highly skilled Wantuni workforce, driving up competition and wages for labour in the region. Even the former Party of Wantuni Anarcho-Capitalists did not expect their plans to bear fruits that fast!

Eilomax Rises
Slaving company takes control

March 4190 - Taking advantage of the decades-old abolition of all forms of government in the nation formerly known as Kalopia at the hands of an anarcho-capitalist coalition of free-market libertarian forces, many of the services and functions of a regular government have been taken over by a number of local and international companies, most prominent among which the oil giant ENIST Energia Istaliana, based in Istalia. So far the Kalopian anarcho-capitalist project has seemed to bear fruit, with the removal of bureaucratic red-tape and the complete abolition of all forms of regulations and welfare attracting a wide range of international investments and leading to substantial economic growth in the former nation. But the elimination of state-enforced standards and regulations against unethical business practices has also, according to local and international critics of Kalopia's stateless project, led to the emergence of natural monopolies and the unfair and abusive exploitation of workers and the environment.

This January an additional source of criticism against the stateless regime has emerged, after the infamous Eilomax® Company, a slave-holding corporation founded in Kalopia in the 35th century has taken advantage of the lack of effective legislative protection to take over a substantial percentage of Kalopian territory and re-establish the former nation as its international headquarters. Eilomax had been at the forefront of international controversy over its pro-slavery advocacy and its use of lobbying and even illegal activities such as piracy to promote its agenda, until it was largely reduced to irrelevance with the growth of international opposition to slavery and the slave trade. But now that Kalopia lacks the means to oppose businesses it may consider unethical, Eilomax has succeeded in establishing its own state within a state in areas its private military wing, the Eilomax Aegis Contractors, has taken control over this January.
