Government Grants 9 Billion to Wolfsheim Disease Crisis

Image
The influential Kalopi-Siphinan politician, Enver Kuqo, chose to announce the government's plans.

Chief of Staff to the President, and Member of the Convocation, Enver Kuqo, today announced that 9 Billion WAN in Foreign Aid would be sent out in order to attempt to tackle the Wolfsheim Crisis occurring in Ostland, and much of the rest of the Third World. Further to that, he announced that the the Chief Minister and President had granted the Health Minister, Salmoneus Mingas, 5 Billion WAN in order to research the bacteria within Kalopi-Siphina.

The move comes after the new leader of Ostland, General Hohenstein, organised a Coup d'état against a former weak and pathetic government who refused all aid attempts from neighbours Hulstria. Hohenstein has helped create a voice of reason at the top, instead of the incredulous toing and froing from the former State Council. Already he has approached both Hulstria and the World Congress to intervene in the ravaging disease. When asked about Hohenstein being a brutal dictator, Kuqo said that he had "a lot of respect for a man who wishes the best for his country - which is a lot more than could be said about the former State Council that placed Ostland in ruin."

Under the Foreign Aid Plan within the Budget, which is already being voted upon within the Convocation, 5 Billion WAN would be allocated to the new government of Ostland, whilst 2 Billion would be promised to Hulstria, in their effort to tackle the outbreak. A further 2 Billion WAN was allotted to the League of Independent Nations, though Koqa said that this was to keep "the bureaucratic oppressors happy" and that he believed they wouldn't do anything other than spend it on "fancy events" for unelected officials.

The extra 5 Billion WAN in Healthcare will crucially not be going into creating a cure, but rather research about the disease, with the aim to discover what was needed to create a cure. Kuqo assured the journalists looking on that was the research successful, a larger, more substantial effort would be made to create a cure to end Wolfsheim Disease once and for all.

"A process like finding the cure to a brand new disease costs a lot of money, and we don't want to put 10 or 20 Billion Wantunis into it, only to fail. That is why we are firstly researching the disease. Finding ways we can manipulate it, and learning more about its characteristics first will enable us to have a more likely chance of creating a medicine for the disease in 6 to 12 months time. Meanwhile this is most logical, economically viable way to go, and that is why the Government has arranged this budget as such.

Emergency Budget Passed Following Liberty Dawn Election in Solentia

Image
The President gave a moving speech in front of the Convocation.

An emergency military budget has been placed in the Convocation, following the election of the racists Liberty Dawn in Solentia. The party, who has threatened to build a wall, claimed a majority in the Senate, along with a resounding First Round win for Luna Dawn in the Presidential Elections. The Liberal Democrats, and their President, Kristoffer Enok were resigned to fourth place in the legislature, and only 15% in the Presidential elections.

This new bill sees an increase of 150 Billion WAN in defence spending, from 80 Billion to 230 Billion. Further to that, an extra 40 Billion is going into industry, to fund for new greater production as war seems pretty much eminent now, as well as an extra 50 Billion in Science & Technology spending, so to increase the amount of new technology discovered. But how will it all be paid for? The Government have also put forward large tax raises in order to fund for this dramatic increase. Enver Kuqo said, "It is not ideal, however under current circumstances, it is necessary for the protection of our nation."

This dramatic move has been a long time coming, with insiders claiming that Haxhi has had a plan for several years waiting if Liberty Dawn were ever to get elected. The party, who has been elected on an anti-Kalopian platform, refers to Kalopi-Siphinan citizens as "barbs" and has been known to make obscenities towards the President. They also support the creation of a wall at the Kalopian-Solentian border. However, today, the President has reaffirmed his call that any aggression shall be viewed as an act of war. Speaking in front of the Convocation, he told the Members, and the wider nation watching at home:

I thank you all for being here. Today we face the gravest scenario of our generation. We have experienced civil war many a time over this last century, however our eye's must now turn towards the border that we now have a duty to protect.

I stand in front of you in unfortunately dismal circumstances. We are all aware by now the results of the elections in Solentia. The people there have decided that they are happy and can accept a racist as their President, who seeks to destroy what has only been a profitable relationship, with one of its oldest allies. Liberty Dawn, and their leader, Luna Dawn have been given an unprecedented mandate in Solentia to seek out this anti-Kalopian agenda.

However. They have not received that mandate here; we defend what is ours. Any attack upon our nation, is an attack on the people of Kalopi-Siphina. Any attempt to build a wall, to divide, is an attack on all of us. It is my duty, as President, to protect you from that danger, and to see us victorious should war occur. It is though, as much your duty, as it is mine. We must now unite under one banner. Kalopians, Majatrans, Siphinans, Istochniaks, Turjaks. Regardless of ethnicity, this is your country; this is our country. It is our obligation to protect ourselves this day, so that tomorrow our children can live in peace, in prosperity, in freedom, and in liberty.

That is why I reaffirm that any act of aggression made by this new government will be seen by us as an act of war. That any advances made by this new government shall be met with hardy resistance from the people of Kalopi-Siphina. Together we shall rise above the enemy and flatten them. I call upon of you to give a hand in the effort that will have to be made, if we are to be triumphant. Never again will we stand for this obscene attack against our people. Sign up to military. Sign up to help create ammunition. Sign up to do your part, whatever that may be.

My final call is to the decent half of Solentia, who did not put their cross next to Liberty Dawn. I ask you - rise up. Fight these intruders in your land. Fight against the hate of Luna Dawn. Never surrender to mob rule. Never surrender to the lies that you are being told. Rise up people of Solentia.

I trust that every last man, woman, and child shall do their part for their nation, for their Kalopi-Siphina. Thank-you very much, and God Bless You!

Conscription Bill Will Sign up Millions Ready for Possible Conflict with Solentia

Image
Enigmë boss, Perset Thaqi, has warned of the dire economic outlook if the nation does end up in conflict.

The Kalopian Government has today put forward controversial plans to conscript millions of men ready for possible conflict with Solentia. The latest development in the current standoff, the bill seeks to draft in all men between the ages of 18-30. The plan would see almost 20 million men brought in to aid the 700,000 military (300,000 active; 400,000 reserve), with up to half of that number being placed in combatant roles.

The government has pointed to the fact that everyone has to do compulsory military service once they leave school, and they will have a reasonably well-trained army. However, it is thought that the quantity of men taken will stall the rest of the economy from agriculture to finance. Whilst the Agricultural Minister, Vanessa Rella, announced that some of the men would be placed on the farms to help produce more food for the men, the lack of people in lower to middle positions within large financial companies has worried Corporations operating in Kalopia.

Speaking on Η επίδειξη πρωινού (The Morning Show), the CEO of one of Kalopia's largest home-grown retail banks, Enigmë (Enigma), Perset Thaqi, said that war would be detrimental to the Kalopian economy:

When I woke up this morning, the first thing I hear is that 20% of my workforce are going to be conscripted into the military. Most of these people are the ones that are dealing with customers, and sorting out complaints, and making those transactions. They're the ones that make Enigmë function on a day to day basis. If there is a drastic cut in the workforce, supply falls rapidly as we just cannot produce services at a fast enough pace. This will make demand skyrocket, and before you know it inflation will be rising by 5 or 6 percent per annum. I would urge the government to seriously reconsider the numbers they have selected or perhaps guarantee that companies keep 85% plus of their workforce, in order for the economy to run even in times of war.

However, Politician Enver Kuqo denied that the economy would flat line were Kalopi-Siphina ever to find themselves at war. He argued that war can kick start an economy, and that companies should be thinking about diversifying in order to meet war time needs. He also pointed out that they were not yet at war, and that these were only precautionary measures.

At the end of the day, the companies can either sit there and whine, or they can get onto their own two feet and say, let's help out. It has been proven over and over again that if private companies help with production in times of uncertainty, economic prosperity is what waits on the other side. I am confident that companies shall and will be able to diversify enough should we need them to.

However, let us not forget that no war has happened yet. The media has painted a bleak picture and has stated pretty much, that we are already at war. We are not. Our current measures are ones of caution in case this hypothetical scenario occurs. People shall still be able to go to work right now, perhaps with half a day off to prepare. Whilst Solentia is unpredictable, and who knows what they could end up doing, we have stability right now in Kalopi-Siphina and the Government is not going to waste that.

Kalopian Growth Slows But Remains Relatively Stable Despite Doom-Mongers' Warning

Businesses in Kalopia can breathe a sigh of relief as the Stock Market remained relatively stable. Despite an early morning drop for the markets, by the end of the day it had recovered to within 10 points of its opening. This was largely fuelled by investment in the Defence Industry, which is set to gain big from the current tensions between Kalopi-Siphina and Solentia. This came as the economic forecast showed that growth had slowed by 0.1% from 0.6% per annum, whilst inflation remained stable, staying at 2.1%.

Since the Reform Party took power and stabilised the domestic affairs of Kalopi-Siphina, the nation has seen a relatively stable period economically, and that can be shown through the continual, albeit small, growth of the nation's GDP. Having grown 0.6% in 4297, today's numbers say that by the end of the year the nation would have grown just 0.5%. Financial observers claim that this is a mixture of leaving economic legislation alone in the main, but also a slow move away from regulation, in favour of a privately run market. The lack of volatility in policy change has allowed companies to adapt and get used to the current economic climate - something that has allowed many of them to grow.

The recent Conscription Bill introduced and passed by the government had made many observers worried, with several CEOs saying that it could prove cataclysmic for the economy, despite government officials constantly placing faith in the Kalopian market. The head of Enigmë of course stated on national television that the government's large scale move to draft many workers into the military, could result in inflation jumping instantly up by "5 or 6 percent."

However, the government will be pretty pleased with themselves that inflation has, for the third year in a row remained steady. Whilst undoubtedly their aim shall be to reduce it, in their aspirations to raise the profile of Kalopi-Siphina, as one Member of the Convocation put it: "The Reform Party is currently doing a bloody brilliant job at steadying a ship that is still in stormy waters." And stormy waters they still are in. Much of rural Kalopia has not recovered from Communist or Thallerist rules implemented decades ago, and the disparity between urban and rural areas is striking.

And now of course Kalopia is facing the prospect of another run-in, this time with neighbours Solentia. Analysts say that the probability of conflict now hinges upon whether Solentia go forth with their plans to build a border wall. Proceed and it appears likely that Kalopia will respond with a declaration of war - in line with their desperation to try and stand out on the international stage. However, Solentia currently appear rather nonchalant about the idea, and whilst the conflict merits front line news in Kalopi-Siphina, it is several pages in within Solentian media.

Of course, one of the largest parties to gain in this nation from the current state of affairs is the privatised Defence Industry, many of whom's companies jumped significantly in the stock market today as those millions of people were conscripted into helping these companies make ammunition. Προστατευτική εταιρία άμυνας (Protege Defence Corporation), the government's largest supplier of weapons, and the nations largest arms manufacturers jumped 30 points. Cynics argue that it is this growth that is the current cause for calm, and it is clear that the defence market is helping keep other markets afloat, however to what extent, we will have to wait and see.

Nephew of Notorious Malgus Von Thaller, Nemo, Emerges from Hiding in Seshold

Image
Nemo Von Thaller emerged from hiding to announce his claim for the Kalopian Throne.

Thought that Kalopia was free of the Thallers? Think again. After over thirty years in the shade following the notoriously harsh regime of Malgus von Thaller between 4260 and 4264, his nephew Nemo has announced his claim to the throne of Kalopia, and that he expects of Dranush Haxhi, the current President of Kalopi-Siphina to recede his Presidency and support the creation of an Autocratic State of Kalopia.

Born five years after the time his uncle was deposed as Tyrant Malgus III, many didn't even know that Nemo von Thaller existed, and assumed all Thallers had left the nation following the mandate made by the then government to exile all those of the Thaller family. However, it is clear now that little Nemo snuck past the system. Growing up in solitude, it appears that he is every bit as extreme as his uncle, if not more so, with a strong Hosian belief guiding his thoughts and actions. It is clear that he is a well-learned and charismatic speaker, whose high tongue is reminiscent of Kings of a by-gone age.

The Kalopian Government have dismissed Nemo von Thaller as a fraud. "Even if he were a von Thaller," stated the President, "His family's chance was blown to pieces thirty five years ago. Why can they not understand that Kalopi-Siphina does not want another crackpot dictator leading them blindly into the abyss." The Reform Party has always been rather critical of the Thaller regime in the 4260s, and already plans are being laid out for Nemo von Thaller's arrest.

Speaking in front of a large crowd, Nemo von Thaller made a speech against the current state of the nation, and how he was the only "annointed" choice to lead Kalopia. Unlike other Thallers, he has not declared himself a supporter of red, grey, or blue Thallerism, but rather said that he was a Hosian Thaller, and that God had given him his divine right to rule. He played into the strong religious feeling in Kalopia, however warned the majority - Ahmadis - that their life would be at stake if they failed to convert.

My Subjects! Thank-you for waiting. It has been a hard thirty years, both for I, but I am sure, as well, for you. For too long now has the slow, painfully slow, agonisingly slow system we call democracy, been a liability for us all. We have all felt it come down on us hard as people who are not strong enough to be leaders try and do a job that has not been appointed to themselves, but rather to the family of von Thaller. Democracy is an insult to Eliyahu who meant for the peoples of Kalopia to have one strong family, one divine family, hand-picked by God himself, to lead them. The heresy that now lingers in the system must be stopped, and a return to the proper ways must be implemented.

Currently the Reform Party are illegally running the country. Dranush Haxhi, the so-called "President of Kalopi-Siphina," is weak and vulnerable. He is being bullied by populist ramblers in Solentia who are nothing but squatters in the eyes of the great people of our land. In truth they should and will perish under my rule. The government should have by now wiped every last one off the face of the earth, and with the House of Thaller behind it, and me at its front, I see no reason why we cannot make Solentia a footnote in history.

They also do not follow the teachings of the one true Lord, our Saviour, Eliyahu who is the word, and who was with God at the beginning of time. Nor do, for that matter, the treacherous Ahmadis who linger in the South and East of our nation. I shall wipe them off the face of the Earth, for they are sinners in the eyes of God, and they have no place more befitting for them than the depths of hell. However, I shall also be a generous King. Within six months of my coronation, any of those who shall repent and join the one true Kalopian Church shall and will still be saved.

I do not wish to laden you with burdens of wrongdoing and guilt. However, I am your link between God and yourself, and I must relay the truth that has been given to me. Though talk of death weighs heavy on the heart, and I seldom wish to bring up such a morbid subject, I find that the perils that Kalopia face today must be met head on, with extreme holiness in order to purge the sin that has held the hearts of Kalopians for centuries and centuries. From the Wantuni Hedgemony, to the Anarchic State, to the Socialist Vanguards, much wrong has been spread throughout this nation. I am here to restore it, and you, so that when you pass from this life, you shall have the guarantee of life eternal with our Saviour.

So I ask you now to rally, not around some petty government or Convocation set out by those who wish to suppress the true way of life, but around me - the annointed one,
and the one who has been selected to lead you to an era of prosperity. Follow me and you shall be rewarded with riches upon measure, not just in this life, but in the Kingdom of Eliyahu. Follow the enemy and a life of damnation, and an eternity of damnation follow. I give you that ultimatum. Reflect upon it, and decide whether you will stand with your King, or whether you would have your King as your enemy. Decide whether you shall back your God Almighty, or would rather him as your enemy. I call Kalopia to rise to arms with me, and with God! Rise my subjects and free yourselves from the shackles of lies that these people have cast upon you, and follow me to freedom and liberty in life and in death.

Kalopia Shuts Borders as Wolfsheim Disease Spreads to Majatra

The Kalopian Government has today shut its borders in order to prevent the spread of the Wolfsheim Disease into the nation. Following reports that Istalia now plays host to the deadly disease that has killed nearly 100 million people, the President said that it would be unwise for Kalopi-Siphina to still allow movement through its borders, and warned that those who break it without consent shall be punished severely.

Nemo Von Thaller, in his normal egocentric style claimed that Hulstria was effectively dealing with the disease, and that the Dundorfians were free in the main from the bacteria. He said that it showed that no Thaller nation had had a case, and argued that this disease "was a purge by God against all those who dare defy Him."

Former Research on Disease has Prevented Mass Epidemic in Kalopi-Siphina
President Accuses Other Nations of Being Homicidal

The spread of the Wolfsheim Disease in Kalopi-Siphina has not been as drastic as some may have expected, in consequence to the tight border controls placed by the Reform Party, along with the Research that occurred roughly half a decade ago into the disease. Whilst little progress was made into weakening the disease, or finding a cure, mainly due to Kalopia's economic position, disease prevention techniques have prevented the spread of the disease to the amount seen in nations such as Malivia.

The Health Minister said that the government was focused upon protecting all of its citizens, and that a current period of isolationism would help achieve this goal. The Minister also confirmed that the Wolfsheim Disease had made its way into the nation - the first time a government official has admitted to this fact - however he refused to confirm whether it had taken any lives as of yet. All the Minister could mention was that "the necessary procedures were being taken to prevent the isolated case in Mossavi spreading to the rest of Kalopi-Siphina."

The President also spoke out on the matter, heavily criticising other nations for politicising the matter, and ignoring smaller nations who too had to deal with the disease. Addressing international press, he attacked Hulstria and Istalia for their disgusting and "homicidal" behaviour over the matter, and called for the nations to stop bickering and work together for once.

It is disturbing that both sides within this international debate have decided this is a political issue, and not a social issue. Currently I don't care people in Ostland give a damn who is in charge of them. What they care about is the fact that the so-called "help" has failed to deliver them a cure, and that members of their family are dying everyday because of the Wolfsheim Disease. By playing politics, Istalia, Hulstria, and Malivia are acting homicidally, and pretty much murdering innocent people by not shutting up and devoting themselves to a cure.

Statement From The Ministry Of Health Regarding the Wolfsheim Disease in Kalopi-Siphina

Roughly three years ago, the disease known as the Wolfsheim Plague spread to Majatra through the nation of Istalia. Since then, Kalopi-Siphina's strict border rules, and compulsory quarantine methods have resulted in only isolated cases being reported in the Territory of Mossavi. As of yet, no cases have been reported within major cities, and most reports are located within rural villages close to the Kafuristani border. This by no means suggests that the disease is not widespread within our nation, and our Government recognises that within Mossavi, the likelihood of the disease exploding is very high.

In regards to the fatality rate, it appears that, due to more modern prevention techniques, and the fact that this appears a weaker strain, damaged by modern medicine in Istalia, we have little to fear in terms of the major loss of life experienced in the Third World. I can say however, that there has been two confirmed fatalities as a result of the disease, with a further 1,670 cases confirmed, and consequently, this Ministry is looking into ways of preventing the spread from Mossavi into other regions.

We would urge the International community to speed up the cure process. Malivia have so far made promising inroads, however, we call for complete international bipartisanship regarding this issue, in order to eradicate the disease once and for all. Currently the politics played within this crisis is deeply worrying, and does not help the ordinary, working people of any nation.

Kuqo: "You Can Choose Your Religion, Not Your Ethnicity," as he Calls for Reform Party to go Softer on Majatrans

Chief of Staff to the President, and Chief Whip of the Reform Party made a strange interview today as he stood against the mild anti-majatran atmosphere that plays a significant role in Reform Party politics. When being asked about the comments made within the World Congress recently, he said that the Party needed to change their mindset, and that Majatrans weren't anymore of a "problem" than any other ethnic group.

Nawaal el-Khalid [NK]: Hello, Mr. Kuqo. Thank-you for accepting our invitation for the interview. I will skip straight to the first question. It is clear that rural Mossavi has been overrun by the Wolfsheim Disease in recent months. Can you tell us what the President has been doing to prevent this disease from spreading further?

Enver Kuqo [EK]: Thank-you for inviting me, it is a pleasure to be here. I would disagree with your terminology when you say "overrun". Kalopi-Siphina can be proud of its ability to contain the disease, unlike other nations, where the matter has become out of hand. Yes there is a situation in Mossavi, and our government has not denied that, but I think that we don't need to be too concerned that we are facing a widespread epidemic currently. In regards to what we shall be doing about this, the President believes that the current best plan of action is to wait upon the international community and the creation of a cure. As I am sure you are aware, several companies are this close to creating a reliable, safe cure, with a high chance of curing the patient. I believe that if we maintain our current efforts to prevent the disease spreading, as well as prepare to roll out a cure once our Health Authority deems the drug safe for human use, we will soon defeat the Wolfsheim Disease.

NK: You talk about the "situation" in Mossavi. Can you give us an updated figure on the amount of people who are infected, and the amount of fatalities that have been recorded?

EK: Naturally, if you want accurate figures the best person to go to is my Honourable Friend the Minister for Health, however when I last checked last night, I believe the figures were at 3000 confirmed cases, and now 15 confirmed deaths as a result of the disease. Once again, I urge you to relate this question to the Health Minister, but I believe that the disease is currently about twenty kilometres away from the nearest city, with strict quarantining occurring to prevent it from spreading into Helios.

NK: Thank-you for the update. If I can, I would like to turn your attention now the new Opposition Party in Kalopi-Siphina, the Liberal Democratic Movement. What do you have to say about them, and about their ideas?

EK: Well of course the Reform Party welcomes debate and democracy, and the Liberal Democratic Movement have every right to run for the Convocation. Currently, their platform is a bit sketchy in terms of the lack of detail they have provided. It appears though, from what I have seen personally, that there are both major similarities and major differences between our two parties. On the one hand, it seems we both agree with the concept of private education, and the extending of LGBTQ+ rights. However, there are naturally points of clash, and there are some things that they say that we cannot accept. Restricting employers rights for example being one of them. Whilst we need to have a balance between the rights of an employer, and the rights of an employee, perhaps one of the hardest things to achieve as a politician, it is the belief of the Reform Party that government involvement tips the balance too much either way.

NK: Several times there you mentioned the word "rights" and how the Opposition is restricting the rights of employers. Of course you are aware of current debate within the World Congress, in which Istalia brought up your government's mild anti-majatran stance. I guess my question to you is this. Is it okay for someone who is part of a Party who restricts rights for Majatrans, and Wantunis, to talk this freely about someone else restricting rights?

EK: No it is not okay. It is deeply hypocritical of us, and for that reason I apologise on behalf of my party. I have already spoken to the President about changing the party's stance, and being more open about it, and discussion amongst the party's elite is currently occurring regarding the matter. In truth, when Conscription was in place, I visited a conscription training ground full of Wantuni Majatrans who were as dedicated to serving their country as any other. They all put in 110%, and would have died protecting a united Kalopia. These people are not the cause of the Kalopi-Siphina's problems, any more than other ethnic groups. I hope that the comments made by Istalia will help pressure more hardline Reform Party members, change their mind on the issue.

NK: That is a very bold statement Mr Kuqo. As a Majatran myself, I am very pleased to hear those words, and look forward to a time where we shall be viewed equally. My next question concerns Nemo von Thaller. What is your personal stance on him, and how is the government going to deal with him?

EK: Look, Nemo von Thaller is not a threat to Kalopi-Siphina. I do not believe that the reaction that the media have made over him is warranted. In my opinion, he is a charismatic figure, who shares a lot of characteristics with the Reform Party, and whilst the Party Platform does not fully coincide with his views, it is clear that there are similarities. For example, we both believe in turning Kalopi-Siphina into an Hosian nation. Now, I believe in the freedom of choice. You can choose your religion, not your ethnicity, and we must respect that choice for individuals. However I believe in Eliyahu as the son of God - and I believe a large enough portion of the populace do as well to say that this is our culture; this is who we are, so let us be the nation we are meant to be. Recently, there has been a large conversion to Hosianism, following the Reform Party's election to power, and I think that is significant.

NK: I would disagree with you there. Around 60% of citizens identify as Ahmadi, and only about 30% identify as Hosian. How can you justify that this is an Hosian nation with figures like that?

EK: The 7% hike in conversion is evidence enough that these old identities are changing. Now, I am sure Ahmadis and Hosians are going to have very different opinions on this, it is a very controversial topic in a culturally diverse nation, and you have really put me through my paces with the vigour of some of your questions today regarding religion. I believe that Hosians and Ahmadis can live together in peace, however I also believe in an Hosian nation, as per my religion, and that is my goal.

NK: Okay. One last, quick question for you Mr. Kuqo. Recently the Minimum Wage and Minimum Income Act, colloquially known as MiWAMIA was brought to the floor. What are your opinions of this?

EK: Well, for a start, MiWAMIA is a great name for an act of the Convocation. But on a more serious note, I believe that this bill is important not only to help workers, in terms of giving them unemployment benefit, or minimum income, however you want to call it, but also to small businesses, who will not be put under the pressure of paying extremely high wages to their employees. This will see major economic growth - we expect this will help the economy to grow up to 2.3% next year - which in turn will give these small businesses the position to be able to pay their workers more.

NK: That is all we have time for I am afraid, thank-you very much.

EK: No problem. I look forward to being invited here again.

Economy Up in Light of MiWAMI and Foreign Workers Acts; Inflation Decreases for the First Time

The latest reports of the Kalopi-Siphina economy are in. And its not doing badly. Following increased movement within the government as a result of the creation of the Liberal Democrats, as well as the gradual fading away of the Wolfsheim-scare, the economy has responded positively, growing 1.1% in the last quarter, as inflation dropped a point of a percent down to 2.0%. This news will be music to the government's ears who are beginning to see the reform they promised show at last. However, critics have claimed that the current growth of the economy shall fail to trickle down to the most marginalised within society, and that wealth shall remain concentrated at the very top.

Two of the largest contributors to the growth of the economy have to be the latest acts passed through the Convocation - the Minimum Wage and Minimum Income Act (MiWAMI(A)) and the Foreign Workers Act. The pro-business legislation has now made it easier for businesses to pay their employees less, whilst making it the government's duty to make sure people have a basic subsistence wage. Further to that, the Foreign Workers Act has permitted foreign workers to work in Kalopi-Siphina without regulation for the first time. This large increase in the labour market has seen businesses benefit from having better, more qualified people to choose from.

President Haxhi, now in his tenth year as President, has been a figurehead for the Kalopi-Siphinan people. Leading in a small-c conservative fashion, his cautious approach to leadership has resulted in an era of stability for Kalopi-Siphina. Whilst foreign policy has remained rather volatile, and definitely the government's largest concern, there is now progress being made with the Reform Party agreeing to the Refugee and Immigrant Protection and Admission Act proposed by Liberal Democrats. The biggest sticking point for them now is their position regarding the current anti-Hulstria sentiment within international politics. Whilst it is fair to say that Kalopi-Siphina would not side with Hulstria, you would not be hard stretched to find some cabinet ministers who were sympathetic to Hulstria.

Making sure that these ministers tow the line when it comes to government policy, is now the President's number one priority. He has already made the controversial move within the party, following the interview by Enver Kuqo, to remove any anti-Majatran position that the Reform Party used to hold. Now he will have to create a coherent plan on how to move forward internationally, the main point of clash within the Reform Party currently. Do this, and his decade of power would have been a success. Fail however, and he could well see himself lose his position within the Reform Party disgraced.

Yet it is not foreign policy that is getting critics up in a stir. It is the large wealth divide that has become larger and larger under the Reform Party, that has got fingers pointing. They argue that this growth is unnecessary if the people who need it most don't see the benefits of it. And they have a point. Whilst the cities, such as Eleopolis and Helios have been booming, the rural areas, especially Mossavi, have seen a complete absence of growth. Many that live out there are still subsistence farmers, and whilst some make it big, and sell their produce to the city, most are constrained to a life of poverty and farming.

So overall, whilst the economic situation is looking up, and progress is being made, more needs to be done in rural areas, and international policy, in order for Kalopi-Siphina to take that step into becoming a more important nation on the world stage.
