Inoméni Kalópia Sweep Elections with 70% of Vote

• Government vows to press on with reforming agenda
• Unveils plans for devolved parliament in Wantuni

Inoméni Kalópia won a strong second mandate in the 4553 nationwide elections, achieving an absolute majority in all five regions with 70% of the popular vote. The government in Helios vowed to press on with its reforming agenda which it said would secure 'prosperity and progress nationwide'.

Government Unveils Plans for Devolved Parliament in Wantuni

The government has unveiled plans for a devolved legislature in Wantuni, to be known as the Wantuni Barlaman. The parliament, which shall sit in Malah, will have autonomy over select services and tax measures, although macroeconomic policy and the majority of financial decisions shall remain with Helios. The 60 seat chamber shall elect its members using the same proportional system as nationwide general elections.

The Prime Minister today said,
Kalopian Dimokratía is a partnership enriched by its distinct identities and traditions. No more is this true than in Wantuni, which is known for its distinct cultural traditions and Majatran language. We will meet public demands for decentralisation in a way which strengthens our union and enhances democratic accountability. The sovereign Ecclesia in Helios shall therefore consider proposals to devolve powers to a newly created legislature in Wantuni

The Wantuni Democratic Party is a major force within the governing Inoméni Kalópia alliance and is believed to have been pushing for such a move from as early as 4549. Wantuni is known to take great pride its distinct cultural and demographic make up, and there have often been calls for greater autonomy. Political differences between Wantuni and the rest Kalopia were also on show at the last election, with the region returning 9 communist members to the Ecclessia. Whilst Inoméni Kalópia won 55% of the vote, 15% of Wantuni voted for the Communist Party (KK). The communists failed to achieve 1% of the vote in any of other region of Kalopia.

Karnezis mulls snap election amid paralysis and stagnation

• PM said to be 'paralysed' and in 'bunker mentality'
• Economy avoids technical recession by 0.03% rise in second quarter
• Inoméni Kalópia braced for losses after pension protests

Prime Minister Kostas Karnezis is said to be mulling a snap election this autumn to coincide with the opening of the new Wantuni Barlaman in Malah as the embattled Leader faces threats from the opposition and party rivals. Continued protests about the rise in the state pension age and a stagnating economy have caused many to lose faith with the PM; some now are openly asking whether it is time for a fresh approach. Justice Minister Dimitris Lykogiannis is seen by many as a potential successor, replacing Finance Minister Argyris Kotas who has seen his star fall in recent months.

A snap election is seen as a way to minimise Ecclesia losses by fighting a 'stability first/no time for a novice' style campaign. It is feared that waiting another eighteen months will give opposition parties the time to appear a credible alternative in the minds of voters. A government source said,
There is a bunker mentality in the group around the PM. They've been surprised by private party polling revealing the unpopularity of their pension reforms and now they're now paralysed. They've moved the pension age to 62 for the next generation and the plan was to then move it up to 65, but they know how toxic the policy is. There are fears the party will be wiped out at the next election and a snap poll would minimise the damage. The party is braced for losses whatever happens, it is a case of when not if. Last time they were able to persuade trade unionists to back them in order to keep out the Conservatives and to persuade centrists to back them to keep out the Communists, but after this they know they'll be squeezed from both left and right.

Fresh demonstrations against the pension rise are planned for this Saturday, although the numbers are predicted to be fewer than in recent months.

Wantuni Barlaman ready for voters

Image
The Wantuni Barlaman in Malah is to be the new seat of power for the region

• The parliament has cost taxpayers 414 million WAN to construct
• First members to be elected alongside Ecclesia elections

The Wantuni Barlaman building in Malah is completed and ready for voters to elect its first members. The new regional parliament came into being thanks to the Wantuni Act 4554 and will be responsible for a number of devolved legislative matters, although macroeconomic and financial policy shall remain the preserve of Helios.

At the last election 54% of voters chose governing party Inoméni Kalópia, with conservative alliance Dimokratiki Symmaxia second and Kommounistiko Komma third. It remains to be seen whether the existence of a regional parliament will change voting patterns.

Xhaferi Plans Reimagining Of Kalopian Foreign Policy

The new Foreign Minister and PPS co-leader Ballargjenda Xhaferi has started to outline her vision for Kalopia's foreign policy, with plans to develop Kalopia's military capacity and contest Seat B on the international Security Council. Xhaferi issued a briefing to staff and the press, announcing that Kalopia would run on a platform of sticking up for smaller nations and contesting the excesses of hegemony and free trade. The new Kalopian foreign policy initiative will bring them further into conflict with Jakania, who is the incumbent holder of Seat B at the SC.

Xhaferi will also be pioneering a new relationship with the global powers, in particular Kazulia. Kazulia currently has naval permissions in Kalopia, a policy that the PPS criticised during the election campaign that saw them take 110 seats in the Kalopian parliament - and saw Ms Xhaferi beaten in the Presidential election. However, the Foreign Minister has announced that after an analysis of the situation, it would be most profitable for the people of Kalopia to enter into partnership - on equal terms - with the Kazulians. Rather than being a puppet, Kalopia will put its pragmatic approach to the great powers into action - asking for Kazulian input into the abilities of the Kalopian navy in exchange for geopolitical support.

This approach, as supported by the Security Council run, will be centred on the philosophy that the ambitions of imperial powers can be harnessed by growing nations to their mutual benefit. Rather than domination, nations like Kalopia must stand up for themselves and recognise their assets and their right to work cooperatively with larger nations for their own advancement. Xhaferi's bit to defeat Jakania is likely to be supported by a handful of nations like Kazulia, but it is still up in the air as to whether the next election, scheduled for the end of the decade, can be as close as the Likatonia-Valruzia race that occurred six years ago.

The crimson wave that hit Kalopia in the recent elections will not be limited to foreign policy initiatives, however. Other PPS ministries will be focused on worker representation, minority rights and environmental protections. Local government officials will be prioritising on increasing transparency and expanding local democracy. Particularly important is the aiding of Siphinan people to unlock their potential by creating a number of new educational establishments in areas with fewer economic opportunities of advancement in the present day. These initiatives will go a long way, Xhaferi hopes, to repaying the trust of her 36.5% popular vote plurality at the last election.

KALOPIAN ELECTION RESULTS
The Kalopian election has concluded and Vasileios Condopoulos, the head of the Anti-Capitalists of Kalopia, is now the new Prothipourgos and head of state for Kalopia. The 300 seats of the Vouli went the same way and have all been won by members of the Anti-Capitalists of Kalopia. The new Anti-Capitalist party has already started the ball rolling on new laws that would make it easier to become a citizen of Kalopia. Despite the landslide victory for the socialist candidates, voter turnout came in at an abysmal 16%, which represents a continuation of the lack of democratic participation among Kalopian citizens that has plagued this country for years. Will this new government leave the problems of Kalopia to fester or will they bring change? Only time will tell.
