Unemployment Drops as Oil and Gas Investment Increases

The unemployment in new Alduria has now dropped 0.2%, from 3.9% to 3.7%, after Oliv&Gaz invested in 50 oil wells hiring many people along the coast of the lake shared between New Aduria and Telamon, the fishing industry also prospered after the senate voted 59/41 to create tax incentives for fishermen along the coast, several new companies including The Dagrian Lapech Konpayi, New Alurian Pwason, and Horacuis Pwason, all of which hired thousands of fishermen. Republican President Emmanuel Damour spoke about it in an interview on Figi New Alduria saying that "Our government will be working towards tax incentives in other parts of the economy, as this has shown what tax cuts can do"

Senate chair Daniel Abbe said that he and the president will be working towards and overall tax cut, and new tax incentives in the renewable energy, healthcare, and pharmaceutical sectors. A poll taken showed that 64% of New Aldurians support further tax cuts ending all hope the progressives had of stopping them, after the poll came out progressive leader Joseph Baptiste addressed the situation on an interview, "This new poll has shown us that the majority of New Aldurians support tax cuts, and despite us not wanting further tax cuts we must uphold democracy, therefore the progressive party will work with the republicans towards a tax cut that will benefit the people over corporations".

Opinion: 'Politics as usual' just won't cut it
by Aline Saint Fort - 2 December 4855
Image

After decades of corruption and militarism from both sides of the the political consensus, the people of New Alduria are more than ready for a visionary approach to politics. This is not a gut feeling or a progressive fantasy, but instead the findings of the University of New Alduria's recent round of issue polling. Consistently, New Aldurian citizens admitted to university researchers that they were sick and tired of the duopoly presented by the Republican and National Parties. Over 60% of respondents strongly agreed with the statement that 'the New Aldurian economy is not working for me', while 71% strongly agreed with the statement that the political system needed 'major reforms'. Few bought into the government's assurances that militarised policing is 'necessary' for a safe society. Citizens also supported universal healthcare, the institution of a minimum wage (we are one of the only nations worldwide without one), major investment in green jobs and the demilitarisation of our nation's overbearing police force. Why, then, does the Progressive Party stand at only 12% in the polls while the Republicans and Nationals have 36% each?

Blaming of the broadly pro-corporate media is, of course, the natural response of most engaged Progressive Party supporters. To the middle-tier party members, they are at odds with truly overwhelming forces that simply cannot be overcome. Moreover, the government's historic, brutal crackdowns on peaceful protesters make direct action impractical. The truth, however, is that the media is not as powerful as it used to be. The New Aldurian people are cynical towards the big, establishment papers - Eastern Nova has seen a surge in its readership in recent years. In fact, the general anti-status-quo movement is weighed down by hobbyists and unserious internal squabbles that prevent the accumulation of power. Petty games and echo chambers are an imported taste from the west which native, so-called 'freedom-fighters' have gladly bought into.

In order to affect real change in New Alduria, the Progressive Party must mobilise the great mass of working people in our nation. This does not happen on the government-censored social media applications, but belongs in our daily interactions. It must be a goal that shapes us and it starts with being bold enough to come out of the shadows. The Progressive Party cannot afford waffling leaders, who promise half-measures and deny aspirations to a post-capitalist society. The creation of genuine communal bonds, accepting that our movement must be broad to be effective, talking to our friends about how a better future is possible - these are the cornerstones of change. The current movement against the established order lives in its own head, clapping excitedly at marginal victories. A government with such apathy towards the conditions of the working class and such willingness to crack down on dissenters is a fearsome enemy indeed, but the people are to be feared far more so.

Editor's note: Aline Saint Fort is an opinion contributor to the Eastern Nova and member of the Progressive Party. Her views are part of a wider effort to work with thinkers across ideologically boundaries and do not necessarily reflect the Eastern Nova's editorial view.

Opposition provocateur arrested on charges of disturbing the peace
20 June 4856

Activist and provocateur Aline Saint Fort has been arrested by federal police today on charges of disturbing the peace, under the National Security Act of 4850. Saint Fort, who has previously advocated for the overthrow of the elected government and the institution of a socialist state, was apprehended at her home near the capital around 7:30 am. Police said that Saint Fort, 40, initially resisted arrest and that officers were assaulted by a male in her household who was therefore arrested as well. Saint Fort is a well-known socialist, feminist and left-wing nationalist who has garnered a following online among disaffected - mostly young - people who are weary of the left's lack of electoral success

Saint Fort's public statements have long attracted the attention of the government for their aggressively left-wing rhetoric and denunciations of elected officials. Though Saint Fort has been less pugnacious over the last two years, her roots lie in the militant and revolutionary Communist Party of New Alduria (PCNA). She left the PCNA after disagreements with the party leadership on tactics and instead joined the more mainstream Progressive Party and began writing for the Eastern Nova. Despite the populist sentiments she frequently expresses in her articles and speeches, she was born to an upper-middle-class family and received a private education in the capital's old colonial quarter.

The steady growth of her following, combined with recent statements made at a private dinner in which she described the Ministry for Justice as 'an enemy of the people', increased concerns that Saint Fort would inspire her followers to commit acts of agitation and even violence. Saint Fort's arrest was met with an aggressive response from her followers, who expressed their rage online and in gatherings outside of the capital courthouse. After a protester assaulted an officer at the protest, the police dispersed the crowd and sent the demonstrators home. Saint Fort's representation refused comment.

Editorial: Eastern Nova stands in solidarity with Aline Saint Fort
by Emmanuel Myrtil and Marie Esther Remy - 20 June 4856
Image

The position of the Eastern Nova is clear: the outrageous arrest of Aline Saint Fort, based on vague and trumped-up charges, is an outrage to the rule of law in our society. Guilty of no crime besides the publication of her own heartfelt views and the possession of an ability to challenge the powers at hand with her platform, the Eastern Nova stands with Aline and fully expects to see her exoneration. In a country where corrupt officials are regularly given pardons and handed meagre punishments for their crimes, the persecution of people for their free expression is even more of an outrage.

The intent of the government is clear, they are seeking to intimidate well-intentioned citizens into silence. Aline's violent arrest and the police brutality demonstrated at a protest against this injustice illustrate that intimidation is the last hope of this failing government to keep the common man and woman in line. The Eastern Nova accommodates views from across the political spectrum, as should our political system in general. It is disappointing to see both National and Republican politicians either support this miscarriage of justice or stay silent. We encourage all people from across the country to make their voices known on this.

The democracy of New Alduria is deeply flawed. Low-turnout, the gerrymandering of electoral districts, absurd voter registration requirements that target the working class - these are all symptoms of a political establishment that is not able to reflect the will of the people in its governance. Aline Saint Fort has been a vocal supporter of radical democracy and expansion of democratic rights to all people throughout our society. In a country with such ludicrous laws against free speech and such brutal policing in response to free assembly, it is up to all people who seek a better New Alduria to be brave and speak out against the authoritarianism of the government in this instance and others.

Analysis: Local election results portray growing anti-government sentiment
by Emmanuel Myrtil - 15 May 4857
Image

The opposition Progressive Party received an unexpectedly positive result in the local elections despite limited funds. Despite taking only 12-14% in most polls leading up to the result, the Progressive candidates are expected to have won over a third of the primary vote in the largely 'single transferable vote' local races. Though the party gained seats in all but two of the 150 regional authorities, the standout performances for the Progressives were in taking majority control of the city councils in Houiluson, Vierveau and Charves as well as rural councils throughout the nation's interior. The Progressives also came first in the capital, Port-Chonne, but will likely sit in opposition as the Republican and National parties unite to prevent the left from taking hold there. The Prime Minister's own local ward in Port-Chonne elected three Progressives, one Republican and a National councillor.

The significant over-performance from the Progressives was likely fuelled by a backlash to police brutality at demonstrations against the arrest of Aline Saint Fort. Saint Fort's arrest provoked unprecedented reaction, particularly from student activists, which culminated in police use of tear gas and rubber truncheons to break up the crowds. Eye-witnesses largely describe the protests as having been peaceful, but the government has characterised the participants as 'radical agitators'. The right-wing Republican Party has been particularly outspoken in supporting the police actions, while the centre to centre-right National Party has tried to take a middle ground on the matter - criticising some but not all of police reaction.

It is not only the left that has benefited from dissatisfaction with the government. The Reform party, which has syncretic left-right views, also made inroads and took up to 11% of the first-preference vote. Reform has criticised the arrest of Saint Fort and police reaction to the protests, running on an avowedly pro-free-speech platform and calling for 'true conservatives' to abandon the government and their 'authoritarianism'. Regional parties also gained, running on local issues, and performed particularly well in the areas furthest from the capital.

Government concedes defeat after electoral thrashing
by Emmanuel Myrtil - 6 December 4858
Image

The Prime Minister has conceded defeat after the Progressive Party and their allies managed to attain a collective majority in the New Aldurian parliament. Despite consistent efforts by the Republican Party-led government to crack down on anti-government speech, the Prime Minister's coalition lost a significant amount of support in almost every electoral constituency. Free speech advocates, many of whom have served terms in prison for their public denunciations of the government, are set to make up a large chunk of the newly enlarged Progressive caucus in the parliament.

In both rural and urban areas, the Progressive Party and the independents associated with their cause made enormous advances. Building on their success in the local elections held last year, the grassroots-funded campaign managed to close their fiscal gap with the governing parties and draft well-known local figures to contest races across the country. High profile incumbents including the Minister for Education and the Minister for Foreign Affairs were defeated in their respective races despite having held their seats for many years and having a strong network of donors and fundraisers. As it became clear that key members of the Republican and National parties were set to lose, the reaction on social media was jubilant among opposition supporters.

In order to appeal to a large enough group of voters, the Progressive Party deliberately side-lined discussion of economic and social policy. Focusing almost entirely on the issue of free assembly and free speech, the campaign has attracted support across the political spectrum including from many former supporters of the government. How this will affect the government's agenda going forward is difficult to work out at this stage, though issuing a pardon to imprisoned activists like Aline Saint Fort is a first-time priority that has popularity throughout the diverse coalition assembled by the new government. Saint Fort herself used her weekly telephone call from her prison cell in Port-Chonne to talk to the leader of the Progressives, Jean Lacarie, to congratulate him on his victory.

It has been rumoured that the Prime Minister planned to postpone the election in a bid to remain in office, but he was unable to get the support of the more moderate National Party who formed the junior half of the outgoing coalition. The military was also unwilling to support any attempts to bypass the democratic process, partially due to animosity between military officials and Republican politicians over soldiers' pay. The Progressive Party's long-standing support for increasing the pay of soldiers was not a core part of their campaign message, but it may end up having been safety net for New Aldurian democracy.

Progressives torn apart by infighting, Aline Saint Fort to challenge President Lacarie
by Josue Lindor - 10 November 4865
Image

After nearly two terms of office, the Progressive Party appears to have torn itself apart. The radical faction within the Progressives has split to form the People's Party, to be lead by Aline Saint Fort. The party's platform will include a commitment to communalism, libertarian socialism and social progressivism. Saint Fort, who has been among the most prominent voices on the New Aldurian left, will be nominated to the presidency by the People's Party in the elections set for December 4868. She will thus be in direct competition with the President she helped elect just a few years ago. The group's slogan is "This is Just the Beginning", a statement of intent from the new left-wing political force.

There have been continuous years of infighting between the more moderate faction of the party, lead by President Jean Lacarie, and the more radical faction, lead by activist and writer Aline Saint Fort - whose imprisonment catalysed the Progressive Party's rise to power. In the years since the two have become more and more disparate, particularly on issues of social justice. Lacarie has continued a strategy of slow-and-steady investment, largely from Vascania in the form of low-interest loans. Saint Fort has been highly critical of the nation's reliance on foreign trade and has called for a radical democratisation of the workplace, combined with the redevelopment of agricultural land to support an ecologically sustainable economic model.

The People's Party, like their leader, is undoubtedly pugnacious in fighting for their vision for New Alduria, though much of Saint Fort's original appeal has faded away as she has made a number of high-profile enemies. The traditional parties of the centre-right, the Republicans and the Nationals, have faded away in favour of the Reform Alliance (RA), who will be the main obstacle to both Saint Fort and Lacarie. The RA, led by Marcel Casseus, will contest the election on a platform of 'opening the country up' to free trade and a managed transition to a services-based economy. Casseus and Saint Fort are bitter adversaries with radically different visions, though both are in agreement about some level of reform to the country's political system.
