Grand Duke Magnus passes
April, 4439
Grand Duke Magnus has passed away at the age of 87; he had complications from heart surgery. Crown Prince Magnus II, who for the last 5 years of his fathers reign acted as Regent when his father was away. The Wolfsheim Stock Exchange dipped slightly on the announcement of the Grand Dukes passing but regained shortly after. The Grand Duke accomplished many great feats, including bringing Ostland into a powerful Dovani ally of the Northern Council, bringing economic success and openness to Ostland as well as bridging the gap between Kunihito and Ostlander's. Chief Minister Wakasugi Tomohik spoke immediately following the death of the Grand Duke and stated his sorrow at the lose of such a great man. Crowds of Kunihito were seen marching through the streets carrying banners and carrying candles, commemorating the memory of the Grand Duke who stopped their repression. Chief Minister Tomohik announced that the Grand Duke of Ostland would also inherit the title of "Prince of Touryou" which the Chief Minister noted is the "...leader of the Touryou state and the leader of the Kunihito people in Ostland."
Several days of mourning have been planned. Aging State Chancellor Karsten von Prochnow has announced his retirement; it is expected he’ll announce that Florian Riechert will overtake the Ostland government as State Chancellor. The State Chancellor is appointed by the Grand Duke and is primarily responsible with government operations in Ostland. Several days of mourning will commence 1 May 4439 and end on 6 May 4439 where the Crown Prince will overtake his father as Grand Duke Magnus II. The new Grand Duke was educated in Dorvik, Hulstria, Kazulia and spent several years in the Ostland Navy where he achieved the rank of Captain of the Sea (Dundorfian: Kapitän zur See), the equivalent of a Colonel (Dundorfian: Oberst) in the Landwehr. Crown Prince Magnus is currently 37 and has a very popular image within the Kunihito community, he is currently engaged to Nishiyama Shino, the daughter of the powerful Nishiyama family, who hold the rank of "Count" in the Kunihito nobility. Crown Prince Magnus is the first Ostland royal family member to be engaged to a Kunihito and is widely seen as a reformer much like his father.
Despite the fact that the Crown Prince has effectively ruled Ostland in the past several years, the Crown Prince has done little of his reform program that he is expected to announce at his coronation.
