Ageing Ex-President Ndidi Afolayan Returns to Public Life as Advisor to General Secretary Kamau on the Vascania Situation

Tensions over Vascania's imposition of a naval blockade in the Red Bass Sea seem to be fast approaching the point of boiling over as the Vascanian government has declared a "state of war" to be active between Vascania and Deltaria, Liore, and Midway; a response to Deltaria's strict stance on the breaking of the blockade and punitive strikes taken against Vascanian targets. In response, Deltaria has also escalated its commitment to the defense of Liore and Medina against acts of Vascanian aggression and has taken a more active role in defending the coasts of the two Dovani nations. From this has come already a skirmish between the Deltarian and Vascanian navies, resulting in the sinking of a Vascanian destroyer and the damaging of a Deltarian cruiser. And in yet another escalation in the already dangerous situation, Yingdala, a nation which has in the past invested heavily in Liore and Medina and has championed itself as a hero of Dovani and of the east, has sent a naval force into the area to assist Vascania in the case that the nations defending against her aggression attempt to reclaim their sovereignty by breaking the blockade, and has also called for the Jelbic Khaganate and the rest of the Zoo Alliance to intervene on behalf of Vascania. Though Yingdala claims that it will currently remain a non belligerent in the situation and has offered to broker talks between the belligerents, their symbolic backing of Vascanian imperialism has shocked and disappointed the Liori people, who are the most negatively affected by the conflict and Vascania's blockade.

Though the escalation certainly spells violence and struggle in the near future, Liore remains committed to its sovereignty and the sovereignty of other nations in the Third World and remains ready to defend its honor and freedom despite the overwhelming asymmetry between the naval and air forces between the likes of Vascania and Yingdala, and Liore (which had been prioritizing the development of its ground forces). Though the Liori army is strong, the possibility of engagements between ground forces in Liore is slim, due to the domination of Liore's sky by the Deltarian air force and Liore's minuscule yet well defended coast on the Red Bass Sea. Instead, Liore will have to contribute with its weaker wings and fins, and has promised to contribute its air force of fifty multirole jets to Deltarian operations, while the navy maintains its watch of the Midway Canal.

On the homefront, the sight is grim, with economic decay looming as a result of exports dropping nearly completely due to the blockade. Wages have dropped and jobs have decreased, and the government provided monthly ration has been cut. Though the situation could be worse, as foreign humanitarian aid particularly from Istalia have poured into Liore and have been distributed to the population. The government has also taken on the task of temporarily combating unemployment and hunger by recruiting thousands young men into a national militia in to both keep them off the streets and paid, and to provide more men for the defense of Liore. The government has also formed a large labor force of men and women to start farming virgin land to both decrease unemployment and provide more food for the population. General Secretary Jengo Kamau has also formed an emergency advisory board to assist him and the Politburo Standing Council in the formulation of domestic policy to address the consequences of the blockade and responses to diplomatic and military actions taken during the conflict. Unexpectedly, this board will be headed by Ndidi Afolayan, the first President of the Socialist State and a national hero who had spent the past several years in retirement. Though Afolayan is known to be a dove on foreign policy and continues to call for a peaceful resolution to the blockade, he remains a hardened patriot and has clearly stated that "Liore is Prepared to Defend Her Sovereignty by All Means."

Economy Recovers; Minese Refugees Accepted
May 4813

Minese Refugees Processed at Makeshift Camp Near Border in Furutari

With several years now passed since Vascania ceased its blockading of international waterways and Liori trade, resulting in a decline of Liore's economy and living standard due to the prevention of the export-based economy from selling its products to nations outside of Dovani, the economic situation has finally stabilized and returned to its position pre blockade. With exports having finally been resumed and income flowing back into the nation, economic normalcy has finally been achieved, and more over certain sectors are starting to see their own minor growth. This hasn't been without pain however, though the tensions with Vascania have largely subsided, there still existed a risk to international buyers and investors stemming from the fear that tensions with Vascania could instantly spark again at any moment without warning, resulting in another blockade or possibly even worse. Due to this, early post blockade recuperation and growth has largely been due to Vascania's reparation payments to Liore, but now those fears in the international market are beginning to subside, and buying from and investing in Liore is too regrouping and spurring on growth.

Though in Dovani Liore and Medina (the primary targets of Vascania's blockade) have survived the ordeal and are beginning to normalize, some nations caught in the cross fire have taken heavy hits from recent events. In Mina, Liore's neighbor to the north, the economic stress of the blockade resulted in the fracturing and destabilization of Minese government and society. With societal cleavages along socio-economic and cultural lines now deepening and threatening to tear Mina in two, reports of violence and attacks are coming from across the nation, and it seems the nation is on the brink of civil war. Already, thousands of refugees have fled the nation, with an estimated 2000 refugees crossing the border into Liore from the mostly Kitembo disputed southern Minese territories. So far, these refugees have been accepted by the local Furutari government, which has set up temporary camps and processing facilities for the refugees. The national government and the Party have voiced their support for refugee assistance, and are planning to take over Furutari's handling of the refugees. At the Minese border, the 6th and elements of the 5th LNPA Divisions have been put on alert and given orders to take up forward positions along the border to monitor the borderlands and assist refugees who attempt to find asylum in Liore. The government and Party are yet to release a diplomatic statement on the outbreak of violence in Mina and have so far only ordered the aforementioned manning of the border and refugee assistance.

Liore Occupies Minese Borderlands
February 4814
Image
Liori Air Cavalry Units Prior to Departure Across the Border

With the situation in Mina in a free fall and all law and order within the nation vanishing, the Party has taken preemptive measures to ensure the safety of the Liori state, and of Minese refugees and local Kitembo people, by ordering a taskforce from the Sixth Division to cross the Minese border and establish an area of occupation in the Nefa region of Mina near the border. So far, Party and government officials have referred to this operation as merely one of humanitarian concerns for the local, primarily Kitembo, population and have given the taskforce orders to assist the nearly 20,000 refugees in the area in safely crossing the border where they can be processed and given asylum. However, many in the Liori public sphere are skeptical of the proclaimed solely humanitarian efforts in the region, and some have come out to claim that the Party is using the situation in Mina as an excuse to resolve a border dispute with the conflicted nation by occupying and annexing the contested Kitembo land in the Nefa region. Few officials have commented on these claims, with those who have neither confirming nor denying the allegations, but instead reinforcing Liore's position as "the protector and sovereign of the Kitembo people."

So far, Operation North Shield (as it's been called by Defense Arch Ministry officials) has been a resounding success, with the air cavalry force of the LNPA taskforce seizing its objectives and opening the way for the ground forces to cross the border and occupy strategic locations in Nefa. The Liori forces have gone relatively unopposed in their efforts, seeing little conflict with any of the combatants of the Minese civil war. In some villages, Liori forces have even been greeted as liberators and protectors by local Kitembo people. With the first stage of the operation coming to an end with the occupation of the Nefa region, the LNPA taskforce will be tasked with keeping the peace and administering the occupied territory until they can be relieved by the Yamabiro Division of the PRV, which will take over the occupation and administration of Nefa with limited backup from the LNPA.

Liori Recap: Major Headlines from the Past Five Years
Image
Deceased Ex-President Ndidi Afolayan Before the Establishment of the Socialist State

Nefa Incorporated into Liore
April 4815
As the civil war in Mina seems to be coming to a close after the surrounding of Wad Mabelat by Ba'athist militias and the mass defection of Minese soldiers to the Ba'athist cause, the Party has indicated that it will not be ordering the withdrawal of the People's Revolutionary Vanguard from the Minese state of Nefa, which has been under relatively peaceful occupation by the PRV for over a year. Instead, the People's Front has established a subsidiary party (The Nefa Liberation Party) and has begun to encourage locals to join the party. Simultaneously, the General Assembly of has unanimously passed the Nefa Incorporation Act, declaring the primarily Kitembo region to be the tenth Department of Liore, and officially extending Party and state control over the region, as well as citizenship, political rights, and privileges to the Kitembo population. With the passage of this act, the government has offered official recognition to any force in Mina who will recognize Liori claims and ownership over the region, and has vowed to turn away from any entity that "spreads the malicious lies that Nefa and her Kitembo people are represented by any government or state other than the Socialist State of Liore."

Ex-President Ndidi Afolayan Dies
June 4815
It is with great sadness that we must report the death of the national hero, President Ndidi Afolayan. A champion of liberty, socialism, and Liore, Afolayan dedicated his entire life to the liberation of Liore from the grip of capitalism, modernism, and materialism, and has fought fiercely to preserve traditional Liori culture against molestation by western thoughts. Afolayan served Liore as President three times, both before and after the establishment of the Socialist State. He spent his later years in retirement in his home village, but returned to Yamabiro to advise the Party and the government during the Vascanian Blockade.

Afolayan died in his sleep from a heart attack on June 9th, leaving our world peacefully and painlessly. Afolayan's village has already buried him and held a private funeral ceremony. Nationally, a day of mourning will be held to commemorate the man and mourn his death.

Liore Makes Use of Yingdalan Funds
December 4817
In compliance with a recently passed resolution in the World Congress Security Council, Yingdala has begun to send funds to Liore and Medina through the Eastern Development Organization in order to assist with the economic recovery from the decline caused by the Vascanian Blockade. Though Liore has been recovering ever since the end of the blockade, the much needed funding from Yingdala has been welcomed with open arms and will be used in a number of areas. First, a portion of the fund will go towards a pool of money to be invested in private, Liori enterprises in the special economic zones. Second, a large portion of the payment will be used to upgrade Liore's secondary trade infrastructure nodes, namely Liore's airports and the port of Bakundu, Liore's only access to the Red Bass Sea. Lastly, a portion of the fund will be used along with government funds to modernize Liore's navy and air force installations and portions of the two forces, in order to make the country more able to respond to imperialistic threats to it in the future.

As stipulated in the WCSC resolution, the government has released the following statement:
We thank the Yingdalan government for the development funds given to Liore to assist in reconstruction of our economy. We accept these funds as an apology for Yingdala's choice to back up their rogue ally when Vascania tried to violently enforce its will upon the Liori and Medinese peoples. The Socialist State of Liore completely and totally denounces imperialism in all its forms as a means to exploit the meek and fatten the strong. The Liori people have many times been the victims of imperialists, and we will not allow ourselves or any of our global comrades to fall victim to this oppressive system.

General Secretary Jengo Kamau Retires
September 4819
Jengo Kamau, the second General Secretary of the People's Front, has announced on the evening of September 21 that he would be resigning his position and retiring from politics due to health concerns. Kamau has been a long lasting and beloved institution in Liori politics, reigning as General Secretary of the People's Front since the murder of Thabo Okeke by the military in 4772. An old man now, Kamau has led Liore to socialism for four decades, guiding the nation through times of prosperity and times of crisis.

To the chagrin of many in the Jamii Party, the Politburo Standing Council has chosen Siwatu Aguda to replace Kamau as General Secretary, being the third Metzist Workers' Power Party member to fill the position. Aguda is a young firebrand, the first Liori executive to be born after the revolution. Over his short yet loud career, Aguda has made a name for himself as a staunch liberal socialist, supporting minor reforms to allow the improvement of the Liori economy through limited market economics, and has been a vocal opponent to the Jamii Party with regards to the use of the savanna for economic purposes, particularly by advocating for the support of the tourism industry.

Government "Indifferent to Yingdalan Blustering"
December 4825
Image
People's Revolutionary Vanguard Keeps the Peace in Nefa Department

Earlier yesterday morning, long range radar operators working in Bakundu reported to officials what appeared to be large masses appearing just outside of Liori waters. At first, officials thought these anomalies to simply be mounds of trash pollution originating from Vascania (a not too rare occurrence to be witnessed by Bakundu workers). However, it was confirmed by recon pilots later that day that these were not floating heaps of scrap metal and plastic products, but warships of the Yingdalan Navy. Soon after, the Foreign Ministry was contacted by their Yingdalan counterparts as well as the Eastern Development Organization, informing Liore of both Yingdala's decision to send its Black Tortoise Fleet to "monitor Liore" and the cutting of funds from the EDO to Liore. Reportedly, when General Secretary Siwatu Aguda was informed of the communiques, he was initially stunned by Yingdala's choice to once again flip-flop its position on relations with Liore, but was quick to come to terms with the bipolar nature of Yingdalan foreign policy.

Yingdala justifies its cold turn of policy on Liore by labeling Liore's peacekeeping operations in and annexation of Nefa as imperialistic, and falsely claim that Liore did not fulfill its required denunciation of imperialism in all its forms. Yingdala also claims Liore to be threatening the peace in the region. Of course, all of these accusations by Tian'an are unsubstantiated sabre rattling. Liore's mission in Nefa was one meant to keep the peace and provide humanitarian aid to the local population, and its annexation of the Department can hardly be called imperialism and is more akin to the protection of the rights and safety of the Kitembo people. And of course, in the government's statement following the resolution of the Vascanian Imperialist Blockade, they expressly denounced all forms of imperialism, saying exactly "The Socialist State of Liore completely and totally denounces imperialism in all its forms as a means to exploit the meek and fatten the strong."

General Secretary Siwatu Aguda released the following statement regarding the situation
Liore has no interest in paying any mind to the impotent blustering of Yingdala. Yamabiro-Tian'an relations have been stressed and wobbly in the past, and we're not afraid for them to be so in the future. In case we have not made it clear, Liore opposes imperialism in all its forms and we oppose imperialist sabre rattling in Dovani, whether it be by western strongmen like Yingdala, or fellow easterners who have managed to scrape together enough arms to threaten world peace, like Vascania. Our actions in Nefa are in no way imperialistic, and in no way threaten the peace. Liore entered Nefa to keep the peace and protect its people from the Minese Civil War, much more than what Yingdala or any other power has done might I add, and our annexation of the region is based on our historic ties to the region and its largely Kitembo population. I'd in fact argue that our annexation of Nefa frees its Kitembos from Minese imperialism. What's imperialism is when powerful nations send their fleets to intimidate or blockade weaker nations into submission, and what threatens the peace is when any nation sends its military to threaten a peaceful country. If it is truly Tian'an's historic policy to not tolerate imperialism in the Eastern Hemisphere, than you can start by stopping your policy of sending your fleet to intimidate eastern nations or help your regional partner intimidate their neighbors, and you can end it by realizing that us people off your rock are not your property.

Once Yingdala does these two things, Liore will be more than happy to reconcile with our old friends, but I'm afraid in this case we are compelled by Security Council Resolution 102 to denounce this instance of Yingdalan imperialism.
