HDV secures victory in three-way contest
September 4434

HDV leader and Staatsminister Masaki Arinaga beams as his party's results in rural Budenlar and Mitrania put them ahead of the GreenLeft Alliance for plurality

Kien, Hulstria - In what turned out to be a closely-run battle with the new Green-Left Alliance to the rest, the Hosian Democrats have held firm to their plurality status in the Imperial Diet, even though an unexpected endorsement of the NDU's Regina Mekkeru trumped HDV candidate Kathrine von Anderinch in the race to succeed retiring Governor-General Karolu Mori. In the first election under the restore Mixed-Member Proportional system, the Hosian Democrats polled just under 40%, winning 242 seats in the Imperial Diet. The HDV vote held firm in their heartlands in Budenlar and Mitrania, seeing them to plurality later in the night, when rural constituencies reported in to put them ahead of their unexpected left-wing rival, the Green-Left Alliance.

Speaking at the HDV election night celebrations in central Kien, Staatsminister Masaki Arinaga said the public had trusted the governing credentials of the HDV once more, and that it was now their duty to form a coalition given the new circumstances. "We lost our majority, but that was to be expected," said Arinaga. "I believe it's only healthy not to have any single party with a majority in the Diet - but it's equally healthy to have a solid party of government like ours to help make sense of that. To our voters I say tonight: we won't let you down. Arigato, Dankusyu, Dankeschön!"

Coalition formations are not expected to be very complicated, observers say. Given the HDV's good relations across the aisle with its former opposition, the NDU, the most logical combination of HDV and NDU is likely to be formed. But analysts warn that Arinaga must not get overconfident: "The Green-Left endorsement of the NDU might endear them to the central player. If Arinaga overplays his hand, he has not got many options. A GLA-HDV coalition is not looking very likely, and will the arch-conservative wing of the HDV, which have been quite upset with their proposal to fully legalise abortion and euthanasia. An independent-minded MdR like Prosperina Gubler, known to be less green than the Staatsminister, might pose problems."

Green-Left Alliance Wins Surprise Victory
8 May 4438
Image

In a surprise election result, the Green-Left Alliance of Staatsminister Adēre Kōtsu won a resounding 45.5% of the vote in yesterday's general election. The party, which was narrowly trailing the HDV in the days and weeks leading up to the election, saw a late surge in support after the upstart Linke Basisdemokraten failed to turn media attention into votes at the ballot box. Kōtsu's victory means that the GLA-NDU coalition is likely continue for the next four years, despite a drop in support for the National Democrats. If so, Kōtsu would become the first Staatsminister to win re-election since Clemens Heumayr in 4409. Although being a disappointing night for the HDV, the party maintained its traditional support in the Crownlands of Budenlar and Mitorania.

In a re-match of 4434, incumbent Governor-General, Regīna Mekkeru, defeated her HDV rival Kathrine von Anderinch in a landslide result. With 64.6% of the popular vote, Mekkeru made up for a lacklustre night for the NDU.

GLA and NDU Continue Coalition
19 May 4438
Image

After this month's election, a continuation of the GLA-NDU coalition was widely expected by political analysts. Indeed, the two parties announced their cabinet line-up earlier this week, with few changes or surprises; it is due to be sworn in tomorrow morning by Governor-General Regīna Mekkeru.

The newly-released coalition agreement shows that the government is planning on pursuing a more radical agenda than during the last legislative term. A commitment to a public works programme, as well as a desire to increase regulation on private education institutions, highlights how an increased majority has given the government new-found confidence in implementing a left-wing agenda. Former trade union leader, Alexander Hardt, the incoming Minister for Trade and Industry, has been drafted by the National Democrats to help enact the agenda in conjunction with the new Ministers for Transport and Infrastructure, Akito Kimura, and Education and Culture, Edogā Mōru.

Despite it's majority, the government is likely to expect fierce opposition from the HDV and other right-wing independents in the Reichstag. Increased public spending has long been a contentious issue for conservatives following the political and economic instability of the late 4300s. Nevertheless, recent opinion polls have shown support for such reforms to take place.

Government Begins Public Works Programme
17 August 4438
Image

Acting on it's coalition commitment, Adēre Kōtsu's government has begun the first stages of its public works programme. Speaking to the Reichstag, the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Akito Kimura, announced the Investment and Opportunities Bill. The bill, which sets aside 5 billion HCR for the project's first year, also established the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC). While individual projects were not laid out in the bill, they are expected to be announced in the coming months after consultations with the NIC. Projects are expected to include an extensive house building programme, electrification of key rail routes and the possibility of a new international airport.

The bill, which passed with a majority of 197, was opposed by the HDV. Nevertheless, the government announced it would work with local and regional governments, regardless of their current political makeup, to ensure that planned projects met the needs of local populations.

Foreign Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Northern Council
10 February 4439
Image

Speaking to the Reichstag yesterday, Foreign Minister Julia Bauā announced the government's intention to take a more active role in foreign affairs.

Honourable Members of the Reichstag,

Today I am not only addressing this Parliament, but also our fellows friends of the Northern Council.

For too long our country has shied away from international affairs; for too long we have let responsibilities fall on the shoulders of others. I am here today to reaffirm our commitment to the Northern Council. Successful domestic economic and politic reforms over the last twenty-five years means Hulstria and Gao-Soto is now ready to take a more active role on the international stage.

We live in turbulent times and with new conflicts and disagreements emerging every year, sitting on the sidelines is no longer a viable option. To match this spoken commitment, the Government of Hulstria and Gao-Soto will be increasing Foreign Affairs and Defence spending in the next budget.

I look forward to working with my colleagues of the Northern Council on a much closer basis in the near future and hope that we can bring about a more peaceful world for all.

Foreign policy analysts have welcomed the move, suggesting that Hulstria and Gao-Soto could play a more active role in peacekeeping missions, especially in Dovani. However, the government will need to recognise its ability to intervene in such missions; years of foreign affairs and defence cuts means it will be some time before the country can pursue a more active agenda.

HDV chooses confrontation with Gubler

Image
The independent-minded Prosperina Gubler follows the combative style of her family: "We must stand up for our values."

Kien, Hulstria - Following the resignation of Opposition Leader and former Staatsminister Masaki Arinaga, the HDV has elected the staunchly outspoken scion of the Gubler dynasty, Prosperina Gubler, as their new leader. With its strong performances continuing in its deeply-orange conservative heartland Mitrania, analysts predict that the Hosian Democrats have opted for confrontation in the person of the 44-year old MdR for Heuboden-Zentrales Oberflachland. Gubler served as Minister of Justice in the Arinaga Ministry and has been known throughout her career as a somewhat stubborn, combative personality who is not afraid to speak her opinion.

True to her image, the new leader of the HDV laid into the new radicalism of the "left-wing coalition government" immediately upon election. "My famous forefather Beat Gubler was apt to speak of the Kleine Leute - the ordinary Crownlander whose values hold this country together. A staunch sense of community, hard work and pride in our country, that's the fabric of this nation. With radical policies like the government is pushing, that's freedom without values all over again. When instead of trying to persuade our religious compatriots of the need for vaccinations you decide to force them hard-handedly to abandon their sincere beliefs, when you do not believe insult to the faith of others is worth recognition in our criminal code, when you decide to limit private schools and the growth potential of our farmers - they are asking where it will end, and they have every reason to with the Linken waiting in the wings to displace the NDU the next time with their quite frankly mad proposals. We stand for them, and we will rise in opposition to such measures."

Work Begins on Royal Institute of Linguistics
23 March 4439
Image

After months of extensive planning and consultation, construction work has begun on the main building of the new Royal Institute of Linguistics (RIL) in Labsburg. Although a number of viable options were proposed, the National Infrastructure Commission favoured the renovation of the old Labsburg II Powerhouse in the east of the city. Affectionately called Kleine Schildkröte by local residents, the powerhouse has sat vacant since 4372 after it was closed due to high running costs. The city council, currently run by a coalition of the HDV and NDU, has welcomed the decision.

With an estimated cost of 28 million HCR, the creation of the Institute is the brainchild of Education and Culture Minister, Edogā Mōru, and forms part of the government's wider public works building programme. Planning documents released by the government earlier last week show that the RIL will take roughly 3000 higher education students in its first year of operating, with more places opening up once all renovation work is completed; that first year could be as early as 4441 according to the current timetable.

The government is hoping to attract students, researchers and professors from across Terra, labelling the Institute as 'the new centre for the study of languages'. In a statement released by the Department for Education and Culture, Edogā Mōru announced:
In an increasingly globalised world, the learning of languages has never been more important. Not only does it improve communication, it helps people understand different cultures and way of life. With new problems and challenges facing Terra everyday, that can only be a good thing.

As well as translation and the study of grammar, phonology and lexicography, the Institute is also expected to offer courses and areas of research in evolutionary linguistics, neurolinguistics, biolinguistics, language acquisition and computational linguistics.

GE 4442: Rōzenberuku leads Nationals to landslide victory
10 May 4442

Ayumi Rōzenberuku

KIEN, HULSTRIA — With the last results in, Ayumi Rōzenberuku has led the National Party to a landslide victory. Founded
almost 3 years ago through a merger of Rōzenberuku's locally ascendant Independent Citizens for Miyako party with similar
parties across the Crownlands, the party now stands at 479 seats to the HDV's 146.

The sheer scale of the victory seems to have surprised even Mrs Rōzenberuku herself. Not even the HDV's Mitranian heartland
was spared, the Nationals winning 75% of the popular vote there - a mere 1% below their national average.

The 37-year-old part-time violinist will now meet with Governor-General Norbert Rieperts to form a government.

Bizarre Royalist Hostage Situation Foiled by Socialist Vigilante

In early December morning, people were deposited their cheques in the national bank when suddenly a group of armed costumers wearing realistic royal dresses banded together and held the citizens at gun point.

The group, who referred to themselves as the Söhne von Gustav (Sons of Gustav) who demanded toe restoration of the type of monarchy last reigned by Gustav III (who was a monarch until his assassination by Communists on August 9th, 2248) and the restoration of the Holy Gishoto Empire. They called the previous newly restored dynasty of "fraudulent heirs of Gustav's subjects." They insisted that if their demands were not met, then they would have killed the customers one by one.

Fortunately for the customers, a person wearing red spandexes and white gloves as well as a rubber mask broke into the bank and shouted "You Shall Not Have Your Restoration, Ya Bourgeois Scum!" The unidentified vigilante punched the assailants despite the best efforts of the hostage takers to fire back. The federal police apprehended the suspects while the vigilante, who identifies himself as the "Red Hammer", mysteriously vanished.

Below is the sketch of the vigilante.

The investigation is still ongoing. Barettu Marutin Barettu, the Socialist Minister of Internal Affairs, has not been reached for comment.
"Hang a map of a place you'll never go on your living room wall. Draw new streets. Tear off bodies of water. Wait for news crews to arrive." So said a mad Nightvalian.
