Sweeping Reforms by Solak government

Image
Prime Minister Bülent Solak adressing the Grand National Assembly

After decades of socialist rule the forces of free market liberalism in Jakania finally united in the massively successful election of the National Liberal Party (ULP) in 4254. Since the election party chairman Bülent Solak has doggedly pursued the party agenda of economical liberalization and the right of choice.

After the collapse of the ruling Metzist party, a new coalition government was formed in 4256 spearheaded by the National Liberals and supported by the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the monarchist Sofuoglu Party. Despite the ideological disagreements between the parties they are now tasked with the practical task of transforming Jakania from a socialist economy to the free market.

The Economical Reforms of the ULP wrote:
  • The Right of Choice Act of 4254 legalized private ownership of schools, universities and hospitals
  • The End of Censorship Act ended the state's monopoly on television and radio.
  • The Economic Liberalization Act of 4255 removed the demand that all business be run by Democratic Worker's Councils, that at the moment controls the majority of the Jakanian economy and mandates that all non-essential industries in the republic are to be gradually placed into private ownership.

Though the legal framework has been laid there will still be a long time before major privatization will happen in practice, prime minister Solak warns. "Our republic's economy has stagnated for a long time and there is a sorrowful lack of investors and entrepreneurs."
In order to aid the future process the state-run universities are expected to provide expanded business economy courses and foreign investors are invited in, though Jakania's heavy restrictions and regulations on foreign investors have not been repealed.

More progress has happened in the public sector where Education Minister Ela Kundakçı (ULP) has invited proposals by private companies or individuals for private or chartered schools and already received several hundred. "The response has been overwhelmingly positive, I'm overjoyed at the spirit of these people who are so eager to take a hand in the future of our children" ms. Kundakçı told our reporter. The proposals vary between facilities focused innovative new learning techniques from around the world to ancient institutions desiring re-establishment after being taken over or shut down by the state. But another type of proposal from Ahmadist communities or organization are not seeing the green light. The minister commented ""Secularism is one of the foundational pillars of the Jakani Republic. We currently have no plans for allowing religious educational centers."

The future
Despite the wide changes already undergoing in Jakania, prime minister Solak promises that more is to come.
"I plead that every patriotic Jakanian who wants to see their country prosper and wants the opportunity to themselves succeed and flourish on their own merits place their support behind our party. The changes we all wish to see will take years to bloom but the result will enrichen us all."

According to the ULP's spokesman plans have already been drawn up for the privatizations of more essential sectors of the industry including defense, oil, water, power and the railways.

Jakania To Leave MRSF
Dokuz, Hufata. November 4258
Image
Pro-Independence rally in Dokuz

After the staggering election victory of the National Liberal Party the Nationalist Coalition between them and the Republican People's Party has begun the process to formally secede from the Majatran Revolutionary Socialist Federation. In a rousing speech to the gathered Grand National Assembly, Prime Minister Bülent Solak (ULP) stated that;

At the passing of this bill we will obey the will of the Jakanian people and formally secede from the Majatran Revolutionary Socialist Federation. Nothing will stop this work, nothing will hinder this work for it is what we all truly desire.

President İsmet Bölükbaşı (CHP) responded to the statement and the bill with his whole-hearted endorsement, saying that:
The great National Liberal Party and the patriots of CHP will steadily guide our new free state through the coming transitional period.

Reactions around the country have varied but mostly been positive, particularly in the eastern provinces. Spontaneous celebrations in the streets were reported from Masul and Karadag. In New Coubra and Sonhata responses were far more mixed, here the support for the MRSF remains the strongest. The past few decades of Jakania's history have been marred by instability and violence between ultra-nationalists and pan-majatran socialists and many fear that the violence will return as Jakania formally leaves the federation.

Jakania Increasing Readiness
May 4259

Units from the Bogendo military command near the Siphinian border

After the fall of Ammopoli to the forces of Malgus Thaller and the following Siphinian revolution in the neighbouring country of Kalopia, Jakanian minister of defence Erdem Badem has placed the Bogendo and Hufata military regions on high alert and begun moving up forces to the eastern border. The official statement from the ministry states that the mission for the forces is to "prevent violent elements or weapons from crossing the border and ensure the protection of Jakanian citizens."
Prime Minister Bülent Solak has attested to the mission's defensive nature, stating that the Sovereign Republic of Jakania has no interest in involving itself with "the Kalopian situation".

Five Dead After Demonstration Turns Violent
Vahesh, Sonhata. 1 May 4259

Thirty four people were taken to hospital after members of a Pan-Majatran demonstration clashed with counter-protestors. The march, organized by a local communist group, was held in protest of the Jakanian government's decision to leave the Majatran Revolutionary Socialist Federation. At around noon they encountered large gatherings of nationalist counter-protestors and it quickly escalated to violence with unconfirmed reports of gunfire. Riot police were dispatched to break the groups up and managed to secure the situation. The Vahesh police department reports that over one hundred people have been taken into custody but it's unclear how many will be charged.

Thousands In the Streets
August 4260
Image
Anti-Thaller demonstrators in Miamo

Up to four hundred thousand people across Jakania took to the streets this Sunday in a series of marches across the largest cities of Jakania. An alliance of socialist and Kalopian interests group have organized the "Marches for Majatran Solidarity", a protest against Kalopian Tyrant Malgus III.

The foreign noble Thaller's rise to power began nearly two years ago when ahead of a mercenary army he seized the Kalopian city Ammopoli, beginning a long and bloody campaign against the disorganized Socialist government. In February of this year the capital Eleopolis fell to his forces and saw the first demonstrations by primarily Kalopian citizens of Jakania. But with each passing week since the crowds gathered grew.

Deacon Vasilios Iordanou, one of the organizers behind the march in Nishka explained the message behind the protests
"[...]To bring the attention of the world and of Jakania to the crimes against humanity taking place among our neighbours. To show that we won't sit idly by as our brothers and sisters are murdered or reduced to slaver. [...] Our government and the governments of the world must all take a stand against Thaller"

The marches across the nation are only loosely affiliated with eachother, united by a common cause and not a central authority, the deacon further explained.

In Miamo, Sonhata the sympathetic marches takes on a far more socialist tone. Communist and Pan-Majatran groups demonstrate in support both of the defeated Kalopian government and the Majatran Revolutionary Socialist Federation merely a year after Jakania's official secession from the union.
"Just three years ago we were one state, one people. Now our comrades in Kalopia are chattled like animals and our government does nothing!" one protestor, who wished to remain anonymous, said to our reporters.

Silence From Dokuz
Despite the now very loud and visible demonstrations the Solak government has remained quiet, offering neither condemnation or recognition of the Thaller regime though the ministry of defence confirms that the Jakanian Armed Forces remain at heightened alert near the eastern border.

Ministry Of The Interior Struggling To Handle Massive Refugee Influx
Thousands Of Ethnic Kalopians Fleeing Thallerist Persecution
October 4261

Image
Jakanian troops supervising a column of refugees on the way to their assigned camp.

Since August 4259 over 50 000 Kalopians have crossed the border from Siphinia, braving Thallerite death squads and border guards. Now alarming reports from the Ministry of the Interior shows that they were completely unprepared for the sheer number of people with the provisional refugee camps erected in north-eastern Bukayar lacking food, water and bed space. As Thaller's bloody regime continues with enslavement and massacres conducted on the Kalopian majority the number of refugees is only expected to rise.

Army to aid
With the Ministry struggling to handle the crisis the Jakanian Armed Forces has been tasked with aiding in the handling and housing of the refugees. Survival equipment including rations and tents have been taken from the army's reserves to be used for housing refugees. 7 000 men have also been assigned temporarily under the Ministry of the Interior's command to guard and escort the refugees and most importantly the transportation and storage of the vital supplies.

In a press release from Interior Minister Bakır Tilki he stated that: "New routines are being implemented to alleviate some pressure from our personnel in the area." He further called for volounteers, a request that has been met with much response, especially from the Aurorian Church and Kalopian interest groups.

The Ministry also expects a large portion of the refugees to be moving on from the camps with escorting arrangements already being made to transport people to the border of Kalopia-Wantuni, also known as Eastern Kalopia, which was only recently recognized by the Jakanian government. Others have been moving into the country to find relatives that already reside in Jakania.

The Nationalist Coalition United For 4262 Elections

In a joint statement to the press the leaders of the National Liberal party (ULP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) announced that they were going to continue running as a coalition in the elections of 4262 but with some major changes. Presented as leader of the coalition and their candidate for future Prime Minister is the popular three-times president İsmet Bölükbaşı, chairman of the MHP. The 'party strongman' has been considered responsible for the former Republican People's Party's rebranding as a right-wing nationalist movement.
Current Prime Minister and ULP chairman Bülent Solak has instead been nominated as the coalition's candidate for the presidency. He last ran before the coalition in 4254 where he gained the most votes of the first round before losing to Bölükbaşı in the second.

The coalition was formed in 4256 where they with support from the monarchist Sofuoglu party could oust the sitting communist government and oversee Jakania's transformation from a communist member-state of the Majatran Revolutionary Socialist Federation to an independent, liberal democratic republic. Even though the major legal battles have been won, the leadership of both parties agree that their work is not yet done and are willing to continue their cooperation as long as is necessary. And with the hostile Thaller at the border Jakanian unity is needed more than ever.

Nationalist Coalition Maintains Power
Reinvigorated MHP Takes Cuts Away At Split ULP
May 4262
Image
Left: President Bülent Solak (ULP) Right: Prime Minister İsmet Bölükbaşı (MHP)

The results are in and it's clear that the reigning coalition government stays in power - but with some major changes. As was announced at the end of last year former president İsmet Bölükbaşı of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has been given mandate as Prime Minister of Jakania by the Grand National Assembly while the former Prime Minister Bülent Solak of the National Liberal Party (ULP) stepped down in order to run for president. He was elected with an impressive 61% of the vote against his one opponent, Gokmen Sofuoglu. Yet it is Bölükbaşı's MHP that has had the greatest success by taking 65 new seats; only five less than the still largest National Liberals.

Those 65 deputies came from the National Liberals. After two massively successful elections the internal frictions within the party finally started showing during the last two years. From its foundations the ULP was a wide umbrella movement, united by their opposition to the Majatran Revolutionary Socialist Federation and their support for a free-market economy. But as those two goals were achieved the unifying force lost much of its power and the Kalopian situation became the tipping point. While the anti-communist and Turjak-nationalist factions of the party wanting a neutral stance towards Tyrant Thaller the Liberal faction, supported by the party's Kalopian wing, clashed with them as they were pushing for a more active stance against the Thallerist regime.

Their coalition partners in the Republican People's Party meanwhile began an ideological shift and a rebranding that focused on populist nationalism. With new vigour and a fresh platform the Nationalist Movement Party lured hundreds of disillusioned ULP members across the aisle, a shift in power that would make itself shown in the elections.

President and ULP chairman Solak claims there is no bitterness however, stating that the cooperation between the parties is "stronger than ever."

The Strongmen of Jakania
No two men has so defined the past decade as the so called "Strongmen of Jakania"; Bülent Solak and İsmet Bölükbaşı. The two first began their cooperation after ULP's enormously successful first election of 4264. Serving as the largely powerless head of state with a cabinet controlled by Pan-Majatran socialists, Bölükbaşı watched with interest as the new and largest party began pushing reform after reform through the lame duck Metzist-lead cabinet. Throughout 4266 the two party leaders met for negotiations, negotiations that ended with the formation of a coalition government between the ULP and MHP, with the monarchist Sofuouglu Party brought in as supporting faction.

In 4268 the two parties ran as a coalition, with Bölükbaşı as their joint candidate for the presidency and Solak for Prime Minister. The new term saw the exiting from the MRSF and the continued privatization of industry, schools and healthcare. But in truth the coalition is less one of political parties and more one of two men. İsmet Bölükbaşı lead the Republican People's Party for eight years before wielding his significant influence to reform it into the modern MHP. During this time he's been the most central figure in the party, ultimately responsible for every decision and position. Popular and beloved by the population, he served four consecutive terms as president and his new ascension to head of government is greeted with enthusiasm from all sides.

Bülent Solak meanwhile may have started as one of a group of founders but during the ten years that have passed his colleagues as slipped into obscurity while Solak's star has risen. Coming to national attention after his failed, if close, bid for the presidency in 4264 he quickly became one of the most well known politicians in Jakania. A sometimes controversial and polarizing figure, he nonetheless has remained massively popular and is largely credited with keeping his party from losing more votes in the last election. As president he will serve as symbol for the republic, but no one expects him to become a figurehead, especially not with the vast influence he wields in his own party.

The question many asks is if the coming decade will be as dominated by these two men as the last and what that will mean for the future of democracy in Jakania.

Thaller Behind KHRO Gas Attack
Culprit Revealed To Be West Kalopian Secret Agent
24th of February 4263

Reports from Dokuz police has revealed that the man responsible for the Sarin gas attack on the Kalopian Human Rights Observatory (KHRO) headquarters in Dokuz is an active member of the West Kalopian Secret Service - Crypteia. It is not yet confirmed whether the attack was part of a Crypteia operation or if it was the act of a rogue agent.

The attack, which so far has claimed five dead and ten critically injured, may be tied to the KHRO's exposal of West Kalopia's WMD program and other reports of atrocities performed by the Thallerite regime, reports that were all taken into account by the Security Council in their decision to enact sanctions against West Kalopia.

President Solak in an address to the press referred to the attack as a "Blatant act of aggression from the Hegemony" and called upon their government to take responsibility for the actions of their agent.

The West Kalopian Foreign Ministry has officially denied any involvement in the attack.

The already tense relation between the two nations have been stretched further as the Jakanian Ministry of Defense deploys another 10,000 men to the eastern border following the revolution in Wantuni which has seen Jakania's entire eastern border fall under the domain of Magnus Thaller.

Strong Showing In Solak's Last Bout
National Liberals Largest Party, Takes Senate But Loses Presidency
May 4270

After the breakdown of the Nationalist Coalition last year with the National Movement Party's announcement that they would field their own presidential candidate, many political experts predicted that the backlash would once again hit the National Liberal Party. Instead the results have shown a strong swing in favour of the National Liberal Party. With 46% of the seats in the Grand National Assembly they have returned to be Jakania's largest party, a position they've only lost once in the party's 17 years of history.

A greater surprise came in the Senate elections. Following the Electoral and Parliamentary Reform Act of 4267 75 of the senators are elected nationally while the five governates elect 15 senators each. The National Liberal Party seized all of these 75 regional seats in a shock result, their candidates winning even in the long-time MHP strongholds of Bureniye and Bukayar and the long Sofuoglu-loyal Sonat.

The one setback to these triumphs was the presidential elections themselves. Although winning the first round incumbent Bülent Solak would lose out in the second round by a narrow margin. Despite the defeat the mood in the president's headquarters was high and he was meet with cheers from volunteers and party officials alike. The now former president thanked all those that had supported him, announcing that his election would be his last and that he would resign his chairmanship over the party at the next party congress.

With the concurrent resignation of prime minister İsmet Bölükbaşı (MHP) the power duo that has dominated Jakanian politics for almost two decades has left their positions to fresh generations. The next four years will be a new chapter in the Republic's history.

Gatherings of the Doğa kilisesi Begin!
March 4298 -
Members of the new Doğa kilisesi have begun preaching in Jakania following approval from the BDP before the last election. Gatherings are numbering in the hundreds in some rural areas of the country, though in the major cities there seems to be little activity at present. It is unknown how many of those attending are doing so out of sincere beliefs, or just out of curiosity at the new religion. One attendee who has subscribed to the beliefs has said followers are now calling themselves 'doğacı'. It remains to be seen if the new religion will grow or fizzle out, but we will watch with interest.
