Ending Cacophony, Establishing Harmony
17 August 5315

Prime Minister Turgut Atalar spoke to Mukavemet about the controversial Official Language and Minority Languages Act and recent protests against it.

Mr Prime Minister, many commentators question the need for the controversial Official Language Act. Why does your government insist on it?

It is quite simple actually. For hundreds of years, this nation saw its unity in the Jakanian identity and in the language that is spoken by all of its individuals. What we are trying to do is reinforce this unity by designating that language as the sole official language. We cherish our minority languages, but they are no means a unifying element that should be present in all official practices.

Majatran and Kalopian minorities regard this an oppression. What is your response to them?

I would like to correct one thing: Not all members of minority communities are against this legislation. We are not banning anything, we are not stopping anyone from speaking their native language, that is not even a matter of discussion. I want to quote Mr Anthiadis (Minister of Science and Technology), what we are seeking is ending cacophony, and altogether establishing harmony.

What will happen to schools that taught in Majatran or Kalopian before the legislation?

Most of such schools are given permission by the Ministry of Education and Culture to continue teaching in those languages, but the teaching of Turjak will be given priority. No longer there will be schools that does not teach in Turjak, which we regard as a national security threat and a tool to harm our national unity.

Thank you Prime Minister.

My pleasure.

Despite the lack of a national organisation and experience, Jakanian national cricket team which is comprised of cricketers from Mesul and Dokuz Cricket Association returns from T20 World Cup with a win under the belt. Minister of Education and Culture Tayyar Bulut who was in Luthori and watched the matches of the team congratulated the cricketers and promised the formation of a national cricket federation.

"Many Jakanians watched a cricket match on television for the first time I believe. This will be a great opportunity. We will take necessary steps to create a professional national team and association."

Although failing to make it to the knockout stage, Jakania managed to defeat Tropica in the group stage. Team captain Şükrü Tansel delivered a great performance, alongside Can Kavur.

Explosion in Mesul: 3 Dead, 24 Wounded
15 January 5319

At least three people have been killed and 24 wounded in an explosion in Ilgazlar Avenue of Mesul according to the officials. The perpetrators are unknown at this time. Mesul police cordoned off the area and placed checkpoints across the city. Prime Minister Turgut Atalar was informed about the incident while on a visit to Ganşehir and is expected to return to Mesul today.

Officials are suspecting of a terrorist attack, which coincides with a so-called ultimatum that was published by a group called Jamaat al-Tawba three days ago. The ultimatum calls for establishing Ahmadism as the state religion, banning abortion and prostitution, redesignating Majatran as official language and requiring all citizens to wear religous clothing. Little is known about the group apart from the online magazine they have started publishing in December. An official investigation is ongoing.

Jamaat Claims Responsibility for Republic Day Bombing
19 December 5319

Jakania is mourning. Yesterday's bombing attack which targeted Republic Day celebrations in Dokuz left 67 dead and injured hundreds. According to the officials, an improvised explosive device that was placed on Uzunsaray street was detonated remotely. Two suspects have been arrested by Jakanian police. This morning, the terrorist organisation Jamaat al-Tawba claimed responsibility for the bomb attack on their online magazine, while calling for continuing the jihad against the government of Jakania. It is the third terrorist attack this year since the January Mesul bombing.

Minister of Internal Affairs Abdulhakim el-Momin promised swift response to the attack. Since September, major operations are carried out by the police and the army (CSK) against terrorist cells in urban areas. More than 243 terrorists are killed and 529 are arrested since then. The purported leader of the terrorist organisation, Awni el-Amer, is believed to be hiding in Yeşilsur mountains. A major operation by the CSK targeting terrorist bases in the mountains is expected to be started next month.

Atalar Elected as President, Bayrak Government Formed
22 September 5321

This afternoon, the 5321 presidential election was held at the Assembly of the Republic, which saw Prime Minister Turgut Atalar elected as president. Immediately followed was the vote of confidence for the cabinet of new prime minister Timur Bayrak. With his election, Atalar formally cut his ties with the party he founded 19 years ago, wishing success for his successor. While his role in Jakanian politics will be drastically smaller, as the head of state Mr Atalar still has substantial authority.

What awaits Mr Bayrak is a war on terror which looks closer to an end with the capture of top terrorist leaders, a staggering oil industry and increased social divisions as a result of the controversial Official Language Act. Seen as a more liberal minded politician than his predecessor, Mr Bayrak is also noted for his tough stance on terror. Not a major policy shift is expected at this time, but of course, surprises might happen.

Court of Cassation Upholds Death Sentences of Top Terrorists
2 June 5322

Court of Cassation has upheld the death sentences of terrorists Ashraf el-Azizi, Muhammed Süleymanoğlu and Majdi al-Amin who are members of Jamaat al-Tawba. Top court ruled that there were no irregularities regarding court procedures and executions can be carried out. Minister of Justice Latife Çoban made a brief statement and said decisions of the judiciary must be respected.

Already weakened with the terror operations, Jamaat will be demoralised with the execution of its top leaders. The terrorist group declared a unilateral ceasefire two months ago and mainly followed it since then. On the other hand, Prime Minister Timur Bayrak left no doubt that the war on terror will continue until all terrorists are neutralised.

"Our Armed Forces will deliver the final blow to these killers soon. Your time is up, Awni el-Amer. We are coming for you."

Cildanian FM in Dokuz for State Visit
3 March 5327

Cildanian Foreign Minister Wenzu Mirasuli was received by his counterpart Alev Denktaş in Dokuz this afternoon. Two ministers shook hands and made brief statements before proceeding to a closed-door meeting. Ms Denktaş was hopeful that the state visit will mark the beginning of a friendship and cooperation between two countries.

"We share a common approach regarding Majatran geopolitics and it is my government's intention to further cooperate on issues pertaining to the continent. We also want to utilise Jakanian oil to the benefit of both countries, I am hopeful that our discussions with Mr Mirasuli will result in an agreement. The other important agenda is combating crime, Jakania and Cildania had their fair share of struggles concerning it. We want to share our experience on counter terrorism and seek new ways to tackling crime collectively."

Mr Mirasuli made the following statement:

"Cildania and Jakania are two countries with a vested interest in Majatran stability. The government in Dokuz understands the challenges that we face, dealing with international crime, as well as the threat of political violence. Both countries know that regional cooperation is important but we both recognise the risk of cooperation becoming coercion, when it happens on the terms of the most powerful countries. I am looking forward to meeting the Prime Minister and the President to discuss these issues in the coming days."

It is expected that the Jakania-Cildania Treaty of Cooperation and Friendship which dates back to 4900s will be re-ratified alongside the Diplomacy Accord of Jakania. Establishing a new joint taskforce for combating crime is also on the agenda. Mr Mirasuli will meet the Prime Minister and the President before departing for Cildania. Next few days will be marked with busy diplomacy traffic.

Dokuz: Former military officer and now politician Dilmen Gul has been elected President of the Republic under the banner of his new "Jakanian Democracy" party. Gul was elected overwhelmingly after nearly 30 years of conservative rule, running on a ticket of social progressivism and state nationalism. Some political comentators had jockingly called the unique mix of Gul's policies "Gullism", a term now embraced by his supporters and foes alike. While irregularities during the election did take place, the National Electoral Commission ruled the election fair and declared Gul the winner against his conservative opponent Yosun Ergen with 68% of the vote against 32% for Ergen. The result seems to suggest that Jakanians are ready to step away from the conservative policies of the last few decades, moving into a more socially progressive era with the election of Gul.

The campaign also saw Gul aggressively advocate for a presidential system, promising to enact the necessary reforms to realize this vision for the executive within 100 days of taking office. Under this plan the office of Prime Minister is to be abolished, allowing the president to serve as both Head of State and Head of Government. In the Assembly of the Republic his party won more then 2/3rds of the seats, allowing Gul to push through these reforms. He has also vouched to make the electoral system fairer, with his proposed reforms including a change from the current FPTP system to a proportional, province based open party-list election.
