Governor of Bureniye Orhan Tüfekçi elected leader of Birlik Hareketi
14 September 4774 (OOC: Postdated)

GANŞEHIR, JAKANIA: Orhan Tüfekçi will succeed former President and Premier Ayleen Basri as leader of Jakania's largest opposition party, after securing nearly 66% of the membership vote on the first ballot. Tüfekçi has pledged that he will continue in his role as Governor of Bureniye until the general election, at which point he will assume the top of Birlik's national party list.

Tüfekçi's campaign was propelled by strong support from social conservatives and working class Jakanians. The Governor has positioned himself as a defender of working families against enemies at home and abroad, while ensuring the "Ahmadi character of Jakanian society and culture." Shortly after the announcement, Tüfekçi marched from his home located in the impoverished west-end of Ganşehir to its iconic mosque located near the centre of the city. Joined by thousands of supporters along the way, Tüfekçi prayed for Jakania:

"Let the mosque be our barracks, and the faithful our warriors, as we take aim against the adversaries of our God-fearing Jakanian nation!"

Jakanian production company evFilm scores success with Endralonian film Homokváros
14 January 4776

The streaming service, production company and film distributor evFilm has achieved another critical success with the release of Endralonian war film Homokváros. Having had its official premiere in December, the film has now received a wide release across the world and will eventually become available to evFilm subscribers in Jakania through their popular streaming service. Since its initial release the film has received praise from Endralonian and international critics for its bleak portrayal of war and human-focused story.

Image
Bakos Milán served as the film's cinematographer and in doing so returned to Syldavian-language filmmaking for the first time in over a decade having worked primarily in Majatran

Homokváros is based on the battle of the same name from the Second Endralonian Civil War. In an unusual narrative structure, the film follows a group of characters over the course of the events of the battle- rather than a single protagonist- to highlight their different perspectives. Despite the Jakanian company producing and distributing the film, most of the personnel involved were Endralonian including all of the principal cast. Director Szabó Lilla reunited with veteran cinematographer Bakos Milán for the film.

In recent years evFilm have increasingly attempted to target critical and awards success. As part of this strategy they have focused a greater portion of their original film production budget on international productions, most notably with the success of Academy Award-winning Deltarian-Jakanian co-production Lost Space. At the same time the evFilm streaming service is now available in multiple countries outside of Jakania. Despite stiff competition from local rivals, the company is able to offer the service in five other locations so far with the expectation of more to come.

Within the Jakanian film sector the rise of evFilm has been incredibly disruptive to traditional production companies. Last year the company released over thirty original films for the domestic market, greater than the next three competitors. Despite the apparent threat that streaming services pose to the theatrical model, evFilm has been to work with traditional firms too. Last year they announced they would be partnering with Yeni Cumhuriyet (New Republic), an independent production company on a series of twelve titles spanning various genres.

ImageGovernment to relax firearm regulations in response to concerns

The national government led by Premier Eldemir Bal has announced that it will pass legislation to relax existing restrictions concerning who is allowed to purchase and own firearms in the country before the end of the current legislative term. The government's decision follows a six-year campaign by the advocacy group Köy Sesi (Luthorian: Village Voice), representing residents of the small villages common throughout the northern regions of the country who feel that the current regulations are unnecessarily damaging to their traditional lifestyle.

Although the past two centuries have seen increasing urbanisation, the role of local village communities is still an incredibly important part of everyday life for many Jakanians and the majority over the population still lives outside the country's major cities. Köy Sesi and various other smaller groups have been formed in recent times to provide a formal outlet for the concerns of these communities, many of whom feel as though they have been "left behind" by the Jakanian economic progress that has been driven by the oil and gas industry centred along the country's southern coastline.

Aside from being important for farmers to protect their livestock from predators, firearms have played an important role in the traditional culture of Jakania's border regions as a result of the repeated threat of foreign invasion. In many villages it is common to find a memorial in the local square to irregular soldiers who fought against Deltaria in the 4635 invasion using their personal firearms. Small village communities of this kind were the worst affected by the devastation brought upon the country in the last century.

The primary aim of the relaxation is to remove unnecessary conditions on firearm ownership that make it difficult for those with little formal documentation to purchase them. In practice the enforcement of the current rules in rural communities is minimal but the government is aiming to clarify this position through the new legislation.

While many have welcomed the changes, some are sceptical about the government's motivation. With a general election due shortly after the new regulations come into effect and the Alliance needing to retain the support of northern rural communities to stand a chance of winning a majority, a few commentators have written off the changes as nothing more than a public relations exercise.

New official residence complex for the Jakanian government completed in the capital
3 May 4777

From next month the Jakanian President and Premier will move into an expansive new official residence in the national capital. The new building will be known as the Nurhasar Palace due to the region of Dokuz where it is located and will serve as the primary residence for both national leaders, as well as the headquarters of the national government. Public opinion on the construction of the new complex has been broadly positive with many welcoming the traditional Jakanian style of architecture employed.

For several centuries, the Jakanian Executive Building has been the primary base of operations and official residence for a variety of Jakanian leaders. Its position has always been controversial due its connection to periods of minority Majatran rule but successive governments have resisted calls to relocate the national government for financial and practical reasons. Eldemir Bal announced in 4755 that his government would authorise the construction of a new official residence and explicitly emphasised the need to reflect traditional Jakanian architectural heritage.

Image
The Nurhasar Palace still under construction last month, the new official residence is intended to evoke traditional Jakanian architectural style from the pre-modern era

Once the transition period is complete, the Executive Building will be transformed into a multi-purpose complex housing a museum of Jakanian cultural heritage as well as a variety of private spaces for conference events, functions and other occasions. The smaller nature of the Palace in comparison means that some offices and functions will be relocated to other parts of the city. Due to the lower expected costs of maintenance however, the government estimates that the new complex will save the country money in the long-run.

Reponse to the construction was not entirely positive though. Emerging opposition political party Compromise opposed the allocation of funds to the project when legislation was brought before the Assembly. In response to the opposition, backbench Deputy Ilim Gokay noted the party's support for the proposed Abortion bill earlier in the term and told legislators, "it seems that there are Deputies in this body who would have the government pay for the murder of children but not the construction of great works of architectural beauty".

ImageBal facing internal criticism over "purge" of liberal party members
Image20 July 4778

Leader of the Democratic Alliance Eldemir Bal has been criticised by various figures within his own party in the wake of the decision to expel over ten thousand party members including around thirty elected councillors and two district legislators. The decision was taken to expel the party members for "undermining party integrity and contradicting party values" in response to their association with the "Yeni Şafak" (Luthorian: New Dawn) faction. Faction and caucus groups are allowed within the party structure but there are limits on how they may behave.

In a press conference announcing the decision, Bal denounced the group as "anti-Jakanian infiltrators attempting to undermine the Alliance", however some political commentators have noted that those associated with the group have been among the most vocal opponents to Bal's polarising leadership. Since he was first elected half a decade, the veteran Deputy has continued the ongoing shift to the right within the party. In particular he has focused significant attention on the concerns of rural populations, frequently citing them as the "heart of the nation".

Electorally the approach has been successful and the party achieved their highest vote total in two decades in the last election. Nonetheless the emergence of the liberal Compromise party has threatened their traditional hegemony on the country's left-wing population. Even in the short time since the decision was announced, around a dozen of the expelled local elected officials have joined the new party.

Aside from a desire to consolidate the party membership around his policy platform, there may be another factor at play in the decision to publicly rid the party of liberal elements. In the past few months, Bal and his party have been involved in difficult negotiations with Orhan Tüfekçi's Birlik in an attempt to form a new government following elections held last December.

Although the Alliance emerged as the largest party, Birlik's Aslan Demir won the presidential election and retains the prerogative power to propose a cabinet. For around thirty years the parties have been bitter political rivals but they are united in opposition to the secularism of the insurgent Compromise. Despite a broad desire to make the arrangement work, the legacy of the previous coalition government between the two parties when the Alliance was led by Bal's father is believed to be straining the negotiations.

Jakanian government opts to end involvement with 3M early
1 October 4779

Image

DOKUZ, JAKANIA: The Jakanian national government has announced that the nation's public health service will be ending their arrangement with the Endralonian healthcare company More Medicament Manufacture (3M) despite their current contract running at least two more years. Minister of Health Adil Cicek explained that the government would meet all the necessary requirements to prematurely exit from their previous agreement and that the health service would find an alternative partner for sourcing pharmaceutical drugs.

Jakania began working with the company several years ago in an attempt to improve efficiency following scrutiny over processes within the national health service. The government recently decided that it was no longer willing to work with the company though, owing to the company's actions in the international sphere. According to the government, the decision was taken for ethical reasons. "In recent years," said Cicek, "3M has concluded a deal with an illegal drugs cartel, denigrated developing countries and produced racist "skin lightening creams". Our government cannot endorse these actions, which run totally contrary to our values of equality and justice".
