FM Responds to Criticism
19 August 4922

After the National Progress Party came to power in 4909, Jakania followed an isolationist foreign policy championed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Özdemir. Government refrained from commenting on major conflicts and remained impartial on nearly every issue abroad. Between 4909 and 4914, the nation underwent profound changes in many fields including economy, civil liberties, justice, military and health. Even the critics of UTP were reluctant to criticize the foreign policy conducted by Mr Özdemir in those years, but after 4914, no major reform was implemented and the country entered a relatively silent period. Today, dissident voices not only come from known critics of UTP, but also within the party itself, prominently from Ziya Soylu, Governor of Sonat. Mr Özdemir, maintaining his silence until today, issued a lengthy and furious press statement and responded to criticism.

"Republic of Jakania remains committed to the world peace and stability, and conducts her foreign policy based on these principles. Regrettably I have been made aware of criticisms made by certain people directed to these policies. Dear citizens, you can be rest assured that as long as I hold this office, Jakania will not take part or take sides in any conflict that is out of her borders. This is not merely my judgment, but also the decision of the Prime Minister and the government. We do not seek blood, we do not seek territory, if they wish so I invite the dissidents within our party to form their own party and stand for elections. If not, I humbly request their silence on matters that are my responsibility."

Jakania Calls for Restraint
5 April 4923

Following the coup d'etat in Deltaria and reports of civil unrest and usage of live ammunition, Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a brief statement and called for restraint.

"We follow the recent developments in our neighbour Deltaria with great concern and call on both sides to exercise restraint. Republic of Jakania remains committed to stability and peace in the region."

Meanwhile notable anti-communist members of UTP under the leadership of Governor Ziya Soylu, whom is known for his disagreements with FM Özdemir, called on Prime Minister to support the junta and take active stance against communism. PM Yıldırım refrained from commenting, but reportedly was furious regarding Soylu's statement which seems to contradict the government's stance. Soylu's recent clashes with government officals are allegedly noted by the Prime Minister whom prepares to seek the chairmanship again in the party congress. A purge may be expected.

Soylu Lost, Also Won
9 April 4924

4th Ordinary Congress of the National Progress Party was held yesterday at the party headquarters in Dokuz. Sonat Governor Ziya Soylu became the first party member to challenge the incumbent leader, Zafer Yıldırım. In his speech before votes were cast, Mr Soylu criticized government's isolationist foreign policy and Prime Minister's lack of initiative.

"We do not need another 5 years of Zafer Yıldırım, 15 years of chairmanship and premiership is more than enough.", he proclaimed. On the other hand, Mr Yıldırım didn't mention his rival's name in his speech and stated his desire to continue what he started in 4909. Clearly he underestimated Soylu, as the election results were a bit different from what he expected. Governor Soylu received 676 out of 2417 delegate votes, gaining the support of 27.97% of the delegates. Mr Yıldırım did mention Soylu in his victory speech this time, and praised his party's democratic foundations. He also dismissed the alleged purge of Soylu loyalists, and called for unity within the party. Despite the results, Mr Soylu is indeed the triumphant one, establishing his base and himself as the leader, and indicating a powerful comeback in the 4929 chairmanship elections.

Crushing Defeat for KHP
15 December 4949

Yesterday's election results came as a big shock to the Crimson Crescent Party and its leader Murat Tandoğan, as they've managed to gain merely 48 out of 600 seats. Newly founded nationalist party Homeland gained 552 seats, its leader and the presidential candidate Kasım Ruşen Solak was elected as president with 94.02% of the popular vote. As the law requests Mr Solak will sever his ties with his party after taking oath as president. It's expected that vice chairwoman Mümine Evren Teke will form the cabinet.

Mr Tandoğan made a concession speech late in the election night, and vowed a powerful comeback in the next election. Party members are rightfully dissatisfied with the results and putting the blame on the party leadership, especially the election campaign is being criticized. Mr Tandoğan might face serious opposition in the next chairmanship election, it seems next 5 years will be quite challenging for him. His political career might be at stake.

Tandoğan's Comeback
13 December 4951

After the early election results were announced, thousands of KHP supporters took to the streets and celebrated their election performance. Though they did not win a majority, the Crimson Crescent Party gained 249 seats in the Assembly and took away the Homeland's 2/3 majority needed for constitutional amendments. In his speech directed to the KHP supporters, chairman Murat Tandoğan declared the results a victory and thanked the supporters. Homeland supporters also celebrated their victory, as they've won the presidential election and secured a clear majority in the parliament. Losing 201 seats back they've gained 2 years ago made it a bittersweet joy nonetheless.

The biggest winner was Mr Tandoğan rather than KHP, he strengthened his position as the leader of the party and quelled the opposition which emerged from the 4949 election disaster. Mr Tandoğan and deputy chair Beyza Gökbakar will have the upper hand in the second party congress which is scheduled to take place on 11 June 4952. Though their re-election is almost a certainty, they need to defeat the Homeland in the next general election which will be held on December 4953 if they want to hold onto the leadership at least till the next party congress. Another challenge begins for Mr Tandoğan.

Protests Against Election Results
16 December 4954

KHP supporters are rightfully furious with the results. Despite winning the popular vote by over million votes, KHP gained 299 seats whereas Homeland gained 301 with a razor thin 2-seat majority. KHP leader Murat Tandoğan was the first to cry out against the injustice. He adressed a large crowd that gathered in front of the Assembly building and declared that the electoral system has failed the country and the people. Majority of the party supports Tandoğan and blames the electoral system, while some party officals blame the election campaign performance in Sonat and Akadası. Loss of Akadası to the Homeland is widely attributed to the poor governorship of Sezai Ongun whom was elected in 4951 with 64% of the vote, and lost in November with 44% of the vote.

Nonetheless KHP can find a joy in their presidential election victory which saw Nurcan Yakıcı, KHP deputy for Haftiye elected to the presidency. Yakıcı defeated the incumbent President Kasım Ruşen Solak with 52.51% of the popular vote. It's a small but symbolic victory against Homeland, a victory that must be completed with a parliamentary election victory.

Legislative Victory for the Government
6 August 4961

Karaağaç government's first legislations were today passed by the Assembly. Among the legislations the most controversial ones were Abortion and Secularism Act, which enabled abortions to take place during the first trimester and decriminalised prostitution respectively. In one of the heated discussions former Minister of Justice and current chairwoman of Homeland, Hüsniye Tiryaki, accused the government of treason and culture destroying. Mehmet Topçu, deputy chair of KHP, responded with this statement which he made in the chamber:

"Mr Speaker,

I invite Mrs Tiryaki to withdraw her unparliamentary statements, no one in this government nor in this sacred Assembly can ever think of betraying our nation. Our position on this particular matter is clear, prostitution will not go away when we outlaw it, rather it will go underground and cause many complications. Thus it's the government's duty to regulate it, and we are exactly doing that."

The Assembly voted along party lines to adopt all of the proposals. Prime Minister Süleyman Karaağaç scored a major legislative victory and delivered his election promises. Next items on his legislative agenda are public highway privatisation and rent regulation. KHP parliamentary group is expected to submit the proposals in the near future. The party enjoys the 150-seat majority which they gained in the 4960 elections, and surely will make use of it to press their agenda.

Jakania Rally to Start in June
15 February 4965

Bureniye prepares to host the first Rally of Jakania on 6 June 4965. The organisation will be the first professional competition in the motorsport discipline of rallying. Jakania Automobile Sports Federation chairperson Yüksel Taşkıran announced the draft 3-day programme. Ganşehir, Taşestan and Yenişarpa stages will be the spotlights of the event. Five teams from four manufacturers will contest the championship. The event is expected to attract attention to rallying and lead to new championships across the Terra, and also to boost the tourism of Jakania. Minister of Environment and Tourism, Abidin Yıldırım, praised the government's active role in organising the event and pointed out that it will be instrumental in introducing the natural beauties of Jakania.

41st Assembly Assumes Office
16 January 4968

Deputies whom were elected in the 4968 snap election took their oath of office and started the parliamentary work yesterday. The 41st Assembly is much more colourful than ever before: With the emergence of two new political parties, United Peasant Party and Jakania Forward!, political spectrum of the parliament changed drastically. Crimson Crescent Party secured its majority, but lost more than 200 seats compared to the 4966 elections.

Political commentators suspect that the next election which is scheduled to take place in 4972 will grant no political party a governing majority. Last coaliton government was formed more than a century ago, between Union and Community and Homeland Front in 4804. Prime Minister Süleyman Karaağaç reportedly directed his party to start the election campaign and parliamentary work from day one. It is unknown if his efforts will bear fruit and secure a majority in the next election, but one thing is certain: The threat is real.
