Jakanian streaming service premieres Bal documentary series
Former Jakanian Premier returns to the entertainment industry with the release of a seven-part series focusing on his time in office

22 January 4750

Emerging Jakanian firm evFilm (literally homeFilm) have debuted a new seven-part documentary series produced by former Premier Yilma Bal and his production company. The series, entitled Günün Hükümeti (Government of the Day), utilises extensive archive footage and interviews with important figures to tell the story the decade period between 4737 and 4747, during which the Democratic Alliance was founded, spent several years in government, before losing successive elections and moving into opposition.

While some have criticised the series as a publicity stunt or too overtly political, many critics have praised its honest and even-handed approach to Jakania's recent political history. Although it does contain interviews with opposition figures, including several Birlik Deputies, the series focuses primarily on the group of individuals referred to as the Alliance's founding figures: Khaalid al-Hashmi, Zehra Apak, Nuray Cevahir, Aytolun Toker and Bal himself. All five held various high-profile roles in government after the Alliance's landslide election victory in 4737, and the film highlights the impact this period had on their personal lives as well as on wider Jakanian society.

The series is not the first of its kind distributed by evFilm. Since its foundation twenty years ago, the company has become the dominant Jakanian firm in the entertainment "streaming" industry. A relatively young business model, streaming services operate on a subscription model and provide consumers with access to a host of film and television titles in their homes. In the past decade, evFilm has been moving to develop more of their own unique content despite having traditionally relied on carrying classic cinema and television titles from Jakania and beyond.

Günün Hükümeti may prove to be a significant draw for new customers, with social media users commenting widely on the new series since its release last weekend. A mixture of intrigue and frustration might be said to describe the reaction, with some venting their anger at current Premier Baran Batuk. Batuk and his political ally President Ayleen Basri are not portrayed charitably in the documentary, with many interviewees characterising them as dishonest political actors.

The third episode of the series focuses on the period around Batak's defection from the Alliance to Birlik and includes interviews with many of his former colleagues. Footage featured in the documentary, taken from shortly after the defection became public knowledge, has gone viral too. The now-infamous clip shows former Minister of Foreign Affairs Khaalid al-Hashmi launching a foul-mouthed rant in which he describes Batuk as a "narcissistic, attention-seeking, self-serving swine" who would "sell his own children into slavery if it furthered his political ambitions".

President Basri: "Put me in the ring"
President Ayleen Basri (Birlik Hareketi) announces she will not seek third re-election, will run for National Assembly.
1 February 4750

⠀⠀DORKUZ: In a nationally-televised address, President Ayleen Basri announced she will not seek a third re-election to the nation's highest office, opting instead to campaign on behalf of her party's list in 4751. The move comes after legislation passed in the National Assembly with all-party support which alters the role of the Presidency, reforming the office's function.

⠀⠀Speaking to the nation, she implored the country's conservatives to solidify behind Birlik Hareketi in advance of the hotly contested 4851 General Election. It is widely anticipated that the parties to the President's left, namely the Demokratik Ittifak and Umut will cooperate closely in an electoral bid to kick Birlik out of government.

⠀⠀"Put me in the ring," Basri beseeched Jakania's Ahmadi majority. "We can't turn back the clock on our historic fight against leftist corruption. Government doesn't exist to subsidize the lifestyles of filmmakers and other Alliance elites; it exists to serve the people!"

⠀⠀Speaking of filmmakers, President Basri criticized the privately-owned entertainment streaming service evFilm for allegedly "streaming liberal propaganda," with the release of a docuseries entitled "Government of the Day." The documentary portrays Basri, Batuk and the Birlik government negatively and prominently features many interviews from Birlik detractors. Basri alluded to the campaign finance laws which prohibit parties from receiving private donations, calling the link between firm and the opposition party "worthy of investigation," and suggesting that the is documentary an illegal "in-kind" contribution.

⠀⠀"It's not shocking that the media is aligning itself with the opposition," said Basri. "It's also not surprising that the Alliance requires third-party support just to remain relevant — but I won't abide any lawbreaking. The Alliance and evFilm don't have the right to override the rules of our democracy just less than a year before the Jakanian people get to vote."

⠀⠀President Basri took particular offence to a scene in the film wherein former Minister of Foreign Affairs Khaalid al-Hashmi explodes into an expletive-filled rage with regard to Premier Baran Batuk. Among many notable quotes, al-Hashmi describes Batuk as "a narcissistic, attention-seeking, self-serving swine," who would "sell his own children to slavery if it furthered his political ambitions."

⠀⠀"This is the psyche of those who attack our movement of common people," Basri declared. "The sort of people who fantasized about enslaving the Premier's children. It's sick, but it's who they are. It exposes far more about them than their media allies think."

⠀⠀Basri is expected to lead the parliamentary ticket with incumbent Premier Baran Batuk, who faces an uphill challenge from the emerging left-wing consensus. Basri declared that Birlik would stay "laser-focused" on "fighting crime," "bringing liberty to the market," and "building a proud, patriotic and Ahmadi Republic."

Caner urges countries to seek new era for Majatra
President's speech marks first major statement of foreign policy agenda since her election victory earlier in the year

19 October 4751
Image

President Meltem Caner has delivered a major foreign policy address at the Temiz Ozkan University in Dokuz, this afternoon. In the speech she called on domestic politicians and international allies alike to seek a "new era" for relations between the countries of Majatra, where stability and cooperation might dominate the continent's history of division and conflict. Caner's speech was her most high-profile appearance since she was victorious over incumbent Ayleen Basri's Birlik Movement in March's presidential election.

Highlighting regional developments such as a return to stability in Vanuku, the President suggested that the continent had a unique opportunity to redefine itself as a centre of stability and cooperation. Caner focused on the role of inter-faith dialogue as crucial to ensuring that countries do not allow their historic rivalries to undermine regional cooperation in the present, saying "the nature of our continent is such that it contains peoples of many different faiths but unless we come together in a spirit of mutual respect, we risk allowing religious differences to prevent progress into a shared future".

Later in her speech, Caner criticised the regime in Barmenistan for its decision to exclude Ahmadis from positions of authority and called specifically on other Ahmadi countries across the globe to put pressure on the Barmenistani government to reverse their anti-Ahmadi policies. In spite of frequent reference to her party as secular, however, Caner spoke of her support for a system of Ahmadi democracy. Expanding on the term, she said "affirming our shared faith as a nation does not mean that we denigrate those who do not believe".

In recent years, the issue of religion's role in politics has become central to successive Jakanian election campaigns. Since their formation, the Democratic Alliance has been somewhat divided on the issue with left-wing figures in the party urging the leadership to commit to the Ozkanist secularist ideal. Nonetheless the party has always affirmed its commitment to Ahmadi values in election materials and public speeches.

Prior to this appearance, the new President had been keeping a relatively low public profile since her election. Despite a fierce election campaign before March, the political situation in Jakania has been notably calmer since the results provided a clear majority for the left-wing bloc of Umut and the Democratic Alliance. At the beginning of the month, a formal coalition agreement was approved by the Assembly and Alliance leader Zehra Apak replaced Baran Batuk as Premier. Unlike her predecessor it seems that Caner is content to fulfil the symbolic role of the presidency, rather than becoming too entrenched in partisan politics.

⠀ ⠀ Basri's back in a big way as Birlik secures its first majority government
Image
⠀ ⠀ Story by Hale Pekkan on 22 December 4762

Dokuz: Over a decade after former-President Ayleen Basri infamously declared that she was entering "the ring," it looks like she's emerged from the fight victorious. On 11 December 4762, Basri led her centre-right Ahmadist party Birlik Hareketi (Unity Movement) to victory, securing a majority government for the first time in its history. Tearfully standing before a crowd of nearly one-hundred thousand in downtown Dokuz, Basri joined hands with her long-time comrade, former-Premier Baran Batuk. Together, the seasoned conservative politicians led the crowd in a thundering chant: "One nation, one flag, one God!"

Earlier this year, the centre-left Demokratik Ittifak (Democratic Alliance) government decided to enter into a coalition with the fascist Kalopian separatist party Kalopiani Enotita (Kalopian Unity). This political maneuver, following the collapse of the Alliance's satellite party Umut (Hope), was explicitly negotiated to exclude Birlik from government. Nonetheless, President Meltem Caner's decision to align with the far-right separatists proved disastrous on election night, as Birlik secured strong majorities in four out of the nation's five districts.

In a further repudiation of Caner's administration, Jakania elected Birlik's Aslan Demir, a socially-conservative imam and religious scholar, as president on the first ballot. President-elect Demir went to bed early on election night, thanking the nation for Birlik's "unquestionable victory" the following morning. On the campaign trail and in his victory speech, the President-elect has pledged to move "quickly, and assertively" on hot-button issues for social and economic conservatives alike.

"I thank God for this victory; we are on the road of glory," said the President-elect. "Together, we're going to retake our God-fearing republic from our national socialist competitors and instil conservative values across all sectors of society. Our mandate expires in five years — 60 months. We don't have time to go slow."

Basri is expected to call on the National Assembly to return sooner than scheduled to assume the Premiership. Baran Batuk, for his part, has been posturing for the position of Minister of Defence for the last few weeks of campaigning; given his stature in the governing party, and their close personal friendship, Basri will likely acquiesce to Batuk in this regard. It's been reported that for nearly a week since the election, Basri has been working around the clock in preparation for the transition into power and the subsequent legislation she plans to introduce as Premier.

Over the course of Basri's decade at the helm of Birlik in the Assembly, she has been able to pass a number of crucial pieces of legislation long advocated for by the conservative movement. This includes a ban on narcotics, a ban on pornography and prostitution, an end to the contraceptive subsidy, along with a number of market liberalizing reforms. All signs indicate that Basri is ready to demonstrate her legislative mastery over key issues in the coming months, and with the Birlik caucus larger than ever, it just may be her easiest challenge yet.

Ataboyev achieves upset victory to become heavyweight champion
Jakanian boxer inflicts first defeat on Rildanorian Allard to secure IBA world heavyweight belt in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Mesul

1 December 4763
Image

Jakanian boxer Yusuf Ataboyev has inflicted a major upset defeat on reigning IBA world heavyweight champion Benjamin Allard in front of a massive crowd in Mesul. The match was watched by over a million people across the country through the Jakanian streaming service evFilm, who secured the rights to the match and made it freely available to all subscribers. Ataboyev won the match by technical knockout in the ninth round when Allard was unable to recover from a powerful right hook, having struggled to assert himself throughout the fight.

Yusuf Ataboyev's rise to become world heavyweight champion has been meteoric and at only twenty-four, he is among the youngest heavyweight champions in the past century
Image

Ataboyev's victory is particularly impressive as he was not Allard's originally scheduled opponent. Valruzian number one contender and former champion Wandelin Wojtkiewicz should have fought the Rildanorian but he was forced to withdraw from the fight several weeks in advance due to a back injury. Ataboyev agreed to replace him, according to International Boxing Association regulations.

Allard was undefeated in twenty-six contests prior to the match and Ataboyev's relative inexperience led many to discount him in the run-up. On the night though, his ferocious energy seemed to unsettle the champion. Allard's traditional focus on dominating the ring through his unparalleled power was disrupted by Ataboyev's ability to force his opponent into a close encounter, in which he could utilise his superior agility and avoid the problems caused by his shorter reach.

The fight was notable for reasons outside of the ring too. Streaming service evFilm's decision to acquire the Jakanian distribution rights to the fight and make it available to subscribers for no additional fee provoked public interest for the way that it disrupts the traditional pay-per-view model that has dominated in combat sports for centuries. While some have praised the firm for making the sport available to a wider audience, promoters and other insiders were sceptical of the move. Boxing relies heavily on the significant revenues that major event matches attract and some fear these developments may undermine these revenues.

Ataboyev has also attracted widespread interest in the political realm. Politicians from both major Jakanian parties took advantage of the increased international focus on the country to meet with the boxer. For his part Ataboyev resisted talking about his political views several times throughout the buildup despite being asked repeatedly by domestic journalists. Ataboyev has mixed heritage and has repeatedly emphasised his apolitical position by saying he is "Ahmadi, Jakanian and nothing else". Among the public he has become a unifying national figure, popular with conservatives and liberals alike for his commitment to his faith and national identity. Since his victory, he has already earned the affectionate nickname "the People's Champ".

Apak welcomes Majatran co-operation following re-appointment
At the beginning of her fourth term as Premier, the veteran politician urges solidarity between the continent's historic rivals

5 February 4768
Image

Elections at the end of last year delivered a comfortable majority for the Democratic Alliance over their their historic opposition Birlik and the election of Tosun Bayramoglu as President on the Alliance ticket. In the aftermath of the result, Alliance leader Zehra Apak replaced her traditional rival Ayleen Basri as Premier and formed the fourth government under her leadership. Apak returns to the Premiership at an important moment for the country in the international sphere, with increasing focus on Jakania's role as the most prominent defender of state sovereignty on the World Congress Security Council and recent military posturing by Kazulia in the Majatran Sea.
Image
Image
Image
Above: Former President Nuray Cevahir returned as Minister of Defence in the new government and has been a key part of developing Jakanian foreign policy in recent years
Image

Over the past three decades, a cross-party consensus on foreign policy in Jakania has focused around two central objectives: defending the principle of national sovereignty and increasing co-operation with Majatran neighbours. In both cases these objectives are viewed as an essential part of securing Jakanian democracy against imperialist invasion, which has a long history dating all the way back to the Augustan Empire's occupation in the pre-modern era and most recently manifested through the Deltarian–Coalition War last century.

As part of securing these objectives, successive governments have worked to strengthen ties with key Majatran partners such as Vanuku, Istalia and Badara. Apak and her predecessor though have increasingly sought to develop a relationship with Deltaria. Historically Jakania's relationship with the northern neighbour has been intensely hostile owing to the repeated Deltarian imperialist attempts to assert control of the country but in the past century, leaders on both sides have attempted to forge a new relationship.

The legacy of the Deltarian defeat has been a significant weakening of Deltaria's previously dominant position in the region. In addition to the policy of "deczarification" which attempted to rid Deltarian society and culture of imperialist elements and thought, this has enabled the two countries to engage with one another as equal partners in the economic and military realm. The recently formed Majatran Economic Association as well as the Majatran Jet Fighter Program provide the most visible examples of these stronger ties.
