ImageCentre for Small Business critical of recent government economic approach

At the annual national conference of Jakania's Centre for Small Business, the organisation's director Nezihe Akdemir has singled out the coalition government for their damaging economic policies over the past eighteen months. As the United Democratic Party (BDP), facilitated by Union and Community (KvT), prepare to pass further economic reforms, Akdemir warned that the new legislation may spell the end for small businesses across the country.

In particular she singled out the "Responsible Trade Act" as being indicative of the government's approach to economic policy saying, "For years small and medium-sized enterprises have utilised investment from larger economies to fuel their growth and drive economic development at the regional and national level, the current government wants to restrict access to that investment to big business. In doing so they will not only damage the standard of living for those who rely on this investment but they set a precedent that this government only cares about fat cat corporate donors, not ordinary Jakanians."

Akdemir's speech was the centrepiece of the conference and attracted significant attention in the national media. In the past the Centre for Small Business has been an important stakeholder in shaping the government's economic approach for administrations of varying political persuasions. For this reason it is unusual for the organisation to take such a direct confrontational stance against the government and Akdemir's comments were met with shock from many.

Since the 4737 constitution was adopted in Jakania, the country has experienced a period of steady and moderate growth despite some challenges. Especially since a period of economic liberalisation in the past two decades, small businesses have been an important factor in the country's economic development and particularly in rural communities. Alliance leader Safiye Aydin-Uysal was quick to jump on the remarks from Akdemir saying they "highlighted how the current government is undoing decades of economic progress."

⠀ ⠀ Birlik's Selma Gurbuz wins gubernatorial race with Alliance backing
⠀ ⠀ 17 November 4795
Image

⠀ ⠀ Diyarıvakan: Former actress Selma Gurbuz of the Birlik Movement has been elected as the next Governor of Akadası with the support of the party's traditional rivals: the Alliance. The gubernatorial election in the country's central district was the first to be held following the announcement earlier in the year that the two parties had signed the so-called "Bahçeleri agreement". Under the terms of the agreement, the two parties agreed on a political platform based around their support for the Ahmadi republic and committed to working together in elections to advance their shared objectives.

⠀ ⠀ The new political coalition will be known as the "Jakanian Homeland Front" and will allow the two parties to coordinate their efforts in important elections while retaining a degree of independence in ordinary matters of organisation and policy. Even though the two parties agree on many important matters of policy, particularly regarding the role of religion in the affairs of state, the agreement is the result of immense effort on the part of both party leaders in recent years.

⠀ ⠀ Since her election as the leader of the Alliance, Safiye Aydin-Uysal has been particularly focused on improving relations between the two parties. The young leader's decision to endorse incumbent President Orhan Tüfekçi in the last election was a turning point in the process and marked the beginning of a strong relationship between the pair. Both were active throughout the gubernatorial campaign and frequently appeared together in an attempt to foster the image of a unified opposition to the United Democratic frontrunner.

⠀ ⠀ Over the next two years the parties are expected to continue to strengthen their political connection in response to the rise of liberal secularism within the country and in advance of the crucial 4797 presidential election. At the moment the new coalition have not revealed their joint candidate for the election but many believe it will Aydin-Uysal herself in an attempt to energise young Ahmadi voters who might stay at home if a more "experienced" politician were nominated.

FOMAT-IV Set For June
10 December 4796

The fourth edition of the FOMAT international song contest is set to happen in Mesul next June, with twelve entries publicly confirmed. Two nations have not yet confirmed or denied their interest in competing, while Jakania's own entrant is set to be announced in the coming months. If all of these entries were entered, FOMAT would have a record attendance at 15 delegations. The event will be hosted by Jakanian presenter Ms. Aya Firat and FOMAT-III winner Asena Tiraz, with each act judged on a 50%-50% mixture of jury and televote scores.

The entrants currently confirmed include a Kalistani punk song called "Dominate", a reggae act from Endralon with an anti-establishment song and a nationalist ballad from Yingdala. FOMAT regulars like Deltaria and Vascania have also entered with big-name native acts. The nations of Medina, Kanjor and Selucia will be entering for the first time, marking some of the most interesting debuts of the last three contests.

ImageHomeland Front consolidates structure in wake of election disappointment

For a variety of political commentators and officials, the Jakanian general election held last year represented the end of a political era in the country. For the past sixty years, the political landscape had been dominated by two major Ahmadi democratic political parties, the Alliance and Birlik. Despite strong performances from various third parties like Umut and the Democratic Party, the two major parties had retained a central position and their rivalry had effectively structured political debate within the country.

In recent years the rise of liberal secularism has threatened the dominant parties and they began working alongside one another to combat the threat to their power through the Homeland Front political coalition. In spite of these attempts at cooperation the parties received a record-low result in the last election, failing to even reach the second ballot in the presidential election for the first time in the history of the modern Republic and placing last among parties who won seats in the Assembly of the Republic.

The rapid rise of the moderate conservative Justice Party has accelerated the decline of the old parties. In their rural heartlands, the new party has achieved significant success and eroded their core voter base. In response to these concerns the two parties announced this week that they would be further integrating their party structures and centralising the leadership of the Homeland Front coalition. The full details of the changes are not yet known but the most significant change will be the creation of a single leader. With the resignation of Birlik leader Orhan Tüfekçi after almost quarter of a century, Safiye Aydin-Uysal will become the sole leader of the coalition.

In the face of criticism and calls for her own resignation, Alliance leader Aydin-Uysal has remained defiant. Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the election she told party members, "We knew that we faced a fundamental challenged to the identity and existence of our values within this society. Our commitment to these values is what drives me, you and all of us forward together for our nation and our faith."

Dokuz Haberler
Republican Nationalist Party seize government; Deliktas declared interim President
3 November 4895

Dokuz - Dokuz was alight with the so-called "Fires of Revolution" as people from across the political spectrum celebrated assumption of power by the Republican Nationalist Party; a right-wing political movement that started to run counter to the current trend of Communist and Socialist corruption and violence within Jakania. At the forefront of the "Fires of Revolution" was Ozkan Deliktas, now Interim President of the Republic of Jakania. Deliktas is a former Army officer and became involved in the right-wing "Republican Alliance" following his tenure as an Army officer. The "Republican Alliance" was founded shortly after the formation of the Communist Jakanian state and is largely believed to be a right-wing Ahmadi republican party that believes in the restoration of the Republic and is fiercely nationalist. Deliktas is joined by long-time friend and former Army officer Ozkutlu Akkaya, a Ahmadi leader at a local Dokuz mosque. The two gained leadership roles within the Republican Alliance over the course of five years and eventually announced in September, 4895 that they would be forming a political organization to counter the Communist government; this lead to the formation of the Republican Nationalist Party (Turjak: Cumhuriyetçi Milliyetçi Parti; CMP) which swept ad hoc "elections" following a series of protests which capped over 400,000 people protesting in Dokuz and another 250,000 across the country. Deliktas, a self-proclaimed neo-Ozkanist, has found himself at the forefront of the "Fires of Revolution" in which he was proclaimed "President of the Republic of Jakania" following the storming of the People's Assembly and the ad hoc election of representatives of the Interim Assembly of the Republic by other leaders.

The CMP was not alone in their efforts, dozens of army vehicles were seen in the streets assisting protestors and members of the CMP taking over government buildings; some were even arming protestors and members of the CMP according to limited reports. Officially the Ministry of Defense denounced the protests and the revolution but did little to overwhelm or stop the protests, likely due to the chaos surrounding the protests and the relative collapse of the Communist government in Dokuz and around the country. Deliktas' first decree as President was to appoint General Onal Cavus as the new Chief of the General Staff of the Jakanian Armed Forces, Cavus is seen as a loyalist of "neo-Ozkanist" thought and a close friend of the Republican Nationalist movement. Cavus was joined by the appointment of Ozkutlu Akkaya as Premier and defense industry insider Korkut Akcatepe as the Minister of National Defense. The President subsequently made a number of appointments that were approved by the interim Assembly of the Republic, who quickly voted on a number of bills before them, notably a large-scale overhaul of the Constitution of Jakania which restores the Republic of Jakania. Opposition within the Assembly was relatively minor and those who did object did so with overtures of loyalty to the new President and the cause of the so-called "Revolution".

The President has not been blind and has accordingly planned to review a number of pieces of legislation, the Assembly of the Republic has likewise noted that they have a legislative agenda that will be formalized following an "official" election to be conducted in December, 4895 for seats within the Assembly of the Republic.

Prime Minister Starts Election Campaign
13 June 4914

With election day approaching, the National Progress Party has started its election campaign today. Prime Minister and the chairman of the party Zafer Yıldırım's first stop was Diyarıvakan, accompanied by party's presidential candidate Abdullah Gürsel. Mr Yıldırım and Mr Gürsel were cheered on by tens of thousands of supporters. In his speech, Mr Yıldırım praised his government's efforts to implement various reforms in many fields, including the controversial Civil Liberties Act.

"Promises made, promises kept. I said "Jakania is not a country of sheikhs and dervishes nor kings and nobles." before the 4909 elections, now everyone can see for themselves if these were empty words or not. We also reiterated our commitment to the preservation of our national traditions and family values, and the Civil Liberties Act was exactly aimed to do that. I respect the criticism, but we will not take a single step back."

Mr Yıldırım also took aim at the newly founded Libertarian Movement Party.

"As a principle, we support the representation of different political ideologies and opinions in the Assembly, it is undisputable and a requirement of democracy. But I also believe that the great Jakanian nation will not fail to see the incompetence and negligence of our inexperienced political rival."

Mr Gürsel took rather a conciliatory tone and emphasized that when elected to the office he will be the President of all Jakanians and will remain impartial while holding the office.

The general election will be held on 17 December 4914. All 600 seats of the Assembly of the Republic will be up for grabs and a new president will be elected. After the self-exile of the so-called monarch Nafiz and the implementation of the 4910 constitutional reforms, the office of the President remained vacant. The elected president will be the inaugural holder.

Rising Star of the UTP
27 September 4916

Elected as the Governor of Sonat on November 4914, Emine Demirağ proved herself as a competent and reliable administrator in her first two years. Producing quick solutions to the water problem of İmir and increasing the intercity transportation capacity earned her a good reputation. PM Yıldırım is said to have noticed the rising star of politics and considering giving her a cabinet spot in the upcoming elections. She is also among the contenders to fill the deputy chair seat that is allegedly going to be vacated by Foreign Minister Yusuf Özdemir. Mr Özdemir has not made an official statement yet, but it's known among the ministry officials that the Foreign Minister wants to focus on his ministerial duties. Mrs Demirağ might be concentrated on solving Sonat's problems right now, but it's clear that her political future is bright.

Military Exercise Begins
3 December 4917

A three-week-long military exercise involving Jakanian special forces began in Bureniye on Tuesday. The opening ceremony of the exercise "Strong Army, Strong Jakania" was held at the Selimiye Barracks in Taşestan. General Işık Büyükanıt reviewed the troops and made a speech after the inspection.

"The army will continue to resolutely follow the path opened by the great leader Özkan, adopting his principles. It is the army of the Jakanian nation and proudly serves the nation, regardless of their religion or ethnicity."

Jakanian army saw drastic changes following implementation of the National Defence and Military Act of 4913, an essential part of the National Progress reforms. The military was broadly secularized, Özkanism and nationalism were emphasized in military education and a disciplinary board investigating radical Ahmadist activities of military personnel was established.

The exercise includes counter-terrorism, close quarter battle, cordon and search, rappelling, fire and move techniques, helicopter rappelling, hostage and rescue and compound clearance operations.

Gürsel Seeks Re-Election
8 March 4919

President Abdullah Gürsel today announced that he will seek a second term. Mr Gürsel was elected in 4914 with 87.01% of the popular vote, an outstanding public support. Past five years were generally quiet for the President, away from the spotlight and away from the daily politics. Some commentators were initally expecting a more active stance, but others were quick to point out the fact that he was handpicked by PM Yıldırım, architect of the 4910 consitutional reforms and Authority and Powers of the Prime Minister and the President Act of 4917, two main legislations that curbed the power of the President. Mr Gürsel has indeed fulfilled his role in that regard. In a press conference, deputy chair of the National Progress Party Onur Yüceloğlu announced the support of his party for the candidacy of Gürsel. With the dissolution of the Libertarian Movement Party, this means President Gürsel's second term is almost a certainty. Another five years of Gürsel and Yıldırım, another five years of stability and progress for Jakania.

Yüceloğlu Hospitalized
27 June 4920

Deputy chair of the National Progress Party Onur Yüceloğlu was today hospitalized for an undisclosed ailment. Mr Yüceloğlu, aged 71, was appointed as deputy chair on January 4917 by Chairman Zafer Yıldırım following the resignation of Yusuf Özdemir. Before his appointment as deputy chair, Mr Yüceloğlu served as the Minister of Environment and Tourism in the first and second Yıldırım cabinets. Mr Yıldırım visited Yüceloğlu at the hospital and made the following statement:

"Mr Yüceloğlu is doing well and according to the physicians he will be discharged in five or six days. I wish him a quick recovery, he's invaluable to us."

Yüceloğlu had no known illness, but according to the ministry officials there was one account of him fainting during a meeting. He was not among the contenders for the deputy chair seat when it was vacated by Mr Özdemir, and the age issue was raised by commentators when he was chosen for the office over younger contenders like Emine Demirağ and Necati Bostancı. If his health problems persist, it is expected that he will be forced to resign and possibly retire from politics indefinitely. A prominent and acclaimed scholar, Mr Yüceloğlu was known for his conservationist views and reportedly came to disagreement with PM Yıldırım regarding his environment policies. Nonetheless he was highly respected by the Prime Minister and was appointed as deputy chair after his resignation as minister.
