Socialists secure a victory to transform Jakania18 May 5475
After the ruling Justice Party was dissolved, President Kenan Demirel called a snap election two years earlier, to elect a new Assembly of the Republic. For the first time in over a century, Jakanians went to the polls with more than one choice to vote for. Socialist Progressive Socialist Changes (İSD), a self-proclaimed successor to the historic left-wing forces of Jakania, such as the Labour and Equality Society and the United Left, liberal-conservative New Perseverance Party (YSP), a successor to the former ruling Perseverance Party, and the green-liberal People's Platform - Green and Moderate as a third force between the two major families.
In a surprise result, the socialists prevailed, winning over 50% of the popular vote and 317 seats in the 600-seat Assembly of the Republic, opening the doors for the first left-wing government in over a century. Prime Minister-elect Melisa Yüksel has pointed out the need for peace in Terra and Majatra, and a rethinking of the global forces' power to prevent another major wars that affect all Terrans. "We shouldn't be prisoners of some foreign countries' failed foreign policy and simple miscommunication, and there should never be countries that all others depend on, this is what's wrong with the system established, and we need to change it". Additionally, Yüksel has called for constitutional amendments to return Jakania to a former parliamentary republic system and more direct democracy mechanism, such as national and local referendums on "various questions affecting the daily lives of Jakanian citizens".
Parallel to the legislative elections, Jakanians elected a new president. İSD former co-founder and party-backed candidate Ahmet Şahin was elected in the first round with 58% of the vote. In his victory speech, Şahin confirmed his support for the parliamentary constitutional amendments, which would restrict presidential powers majorly and implement indirect elections. When asked about the contradiction of İSD's party ideology of expanding citizens' democracy and participation in making decisions, Şahin said that the indirect elections of the president don't affect or disengage citizens from making an impact on the choice, but rather "pressure parties to follow the popular choice and choose the impartial independent candidates, who will execute the little, yet important powers, given by the constitution".
