Jakanian government expels Kalopian and Kazulian diplomatic staff
7 April 4768

DOKUZ, JAKANIA: Jakanian Premier Zehra Apak has announced that her government will be expelling fifteen Kalopian and Kazulian officials after the countries conducted joint military exercises in the Majatran Sea. Speaking at a conference with press from across the world, she told reporters that the officials had been identified as "undeclared intelligence officers" and would be designated persona non grata in Jakania from next week. Later in her announcement, she said "Jakania and our international allies will not be deterred by Kazulian attempts to threaten our sovereign territory".

Last week, President Tosun Bayramoglu offered to work alongside his Kalopian counterpart to resolve the ongoing dispute over Kazulia's deployment of naval forces to the region but the Kalopian President Antonis Sipras refused to work with the Jakanian government. According to sources in the President's offices, Sipras told his Jakanian opposite number that "Kazulian financial aid made it clear" that the action should proceed.

In addition to the expulsion, Apak announced that the Republic would be taking various other action "to send a clear message that imperialist aggression will not be tolerated". Among the expected measures to be confirmed in the coming weeks are tighter controls on the Kalopian-Jakanian border and the withdrawal of an invitation to Dokuz for President Sipras. The developments mark a deterioration in the typically harmonious relations between Jakania and its eastern neighbour however Apak noted that they could be easily repaired if Kalopia reversed their decision to collaborate with the regime in Skalm.

Government to launch extensive military modernisation programme
Apak announces sweeping "Deer Hunter" reform programme to bring the country's armed forces into closer alignment with regional partners

28 September 4768

In collaboration with Cakan Ulusal Güvenlik (Luthorian: Jakanian National Security), the government of Zehra Apak has announced a major programme of modernisation for the national armed forces. Expected to be implemented over the next decade, the new programme will be nicknamed "Deer Hunter" and combines significant investment in new military technology and various other measures to increase efficiency and capacity. Minister of Defence Nuray Cevahir told a press conference that Deer Hunter will approach national security in a manner that incorporates regional partnership.

The centre-point of the Deer Hunter programme is a significant investment in defence spending authorised earlier this year by the Assembly and intended to bring the Jakanian military closer to the level of regional partners. Nonetheless the government has been clear that the new initiative should not be treated as an attempt to rival Jakania's allies but rather to ensure the country can "pull its weight" when it comes to military partnership. Over the past three decades, the country has been involved in important collaborations with both Deltaria and Vanuku.

Prior to this announcement from the Jakanian government, there had been various signs that the country was attempting to capitalise on a stable economy to strengthen the armed forces. The most prominent example being their participation in the Majatran Jet Fighter Program, a multi-national effort to develop a new multi-purpose aircraft with Deltaria and Istalia. Defence experts had noted how the initiative benefits Jakania as it allowed the burden of development to be spread across all three countries and enabled lower costs for all involved. On a similar note, the Jakanian government has been in discussions with members of the Zoo Alliance to enable the country to become an associate member in recognition of shared international objectives.

On the domestic front, legislation associated with the Deer Hunter programme marks a rare instance of bi-partisan support. Part of the modernisation programme includes a commitment by the government to tighten the rules on military service. At the moment, individuals are able to opt out in favour of civilian service but this provision will be removed in the coming months, with exceptions only for those who cannot serve. Over the coming months, the government is expected to give further details of the specific initiatives that will form the basis of the programme.

Cevahir steps in following Apak's retirement as Premier
Handover of power between the two veteran politicians unlikely to disrupt the current government's legislative agenda

31 May 4770
Image

Former Jakanian President Nuray Cevahir was approved by the Assembly as the country's new Premier yesterday following an announcement at the beginning of the month from incumbent Zehra Apak that she would be retiring from politics. Apak's retirement was a significant moment in modern Jakanian political history. The experienced Democratic Alliance politician is the longest serving national leader in the era of the modern Republic, having served as Premier for a combined fifteen years across four different governments.

Replacing her as Premier and leader of the Alliance is another party veteran. Nuray Cevahir was the inaugural President of the Republic following the implementation of the 4737 Constitution and has since served three times as Minister of Defence, recently overseeing the beginning of the Deer Hunter modernisation programme. Alongside Apak and several others, he is often cited as one of the party's "founding figures"- a term referring to the group of individuals who originally conceived of the movement to bring a new era of democratic republicanism to Jakania.

Apak's resignation was prompted by health concerns and a desire to spend more time with her family. Since being becoming leader of the Democratic Alliance in 4748, she has led the party to two general election victories as well as leading two coalition governments with Umut in her early tenure. Among party members though she will likely be remembered for her ability to engender party unity in the spite of divisions over fundamental questions of political philosophy. In the current legislative term she has even managed to reach across the isle to her fierce rivals in Birlik to pass a variety of defence measures in a bipartisan fashion.

In a departure from conventional procedure, Cevahir was not elected by a ballot of party members. Due to the nature of the transition, the party's governing authority determined that it would be more appropriate on this occasion to have Deputies vote for the new leader. In the end no other candidates stood in the election and Cevahir was declared the winner without a contest. Despite being a relatively popular figure within the party, some members were angry at the decision not to hold a proper leadership election, especially those on the left who have been somewhat excluded from positions of authority in the past decade.

Nonetheless Cevahir has made clear that he will be continuing to pursue the legislative priorities set by the previous government. Foremost among these is the Deer Hunter programme that he managed as Minister of Defence as well as various initiatives to reform the country's education system, the full details of which are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Education reforms aim to modernise Jakanian system
Extensive reorganisation of the national education system aims to create a more diverse and effective network of institutions

28 July 4770
Image

Following on from commitments by previous Premier Zehra Apak at the last general election, the new government of Nuray Cevahir has launched an ambitious series of reforms to the Jakanian education system. The new reforms will affect all levels of the system from pre-school all the way to post-graduate study and are intended to both modernise and diversify Jakanian education. The unifying feature of all the proposed changes is their focus on ensuring that students are not only equipped for entering the modern economy but emerge from the education system with a richer character.

At the centre of the new plans is an attempt to reinvent the manner in which the Jakanian education system operates. Once the new proposals are fully implemented by the end of 4775, Jakanian students will no longer be required to remain in formal education until the age of nineteen. Under the new system, students will complete their formal compulsory examinations at the age of seventeen, at which time they will be able to choose between pursuing further education or exploring other options. The government hopes this will allow students who wish to pursue vocational training to develop their potential earlier, rather than completing further examinations that aren't serving to advance their career objectives.

At the same time, the government will begin mandating from the beginning of the 4775 academic year that all schools teach literature and language in at least two of the country's recognised languages. The new regulations tie in with the formation of the Jakanian Language Institute- which is intended to regulate and monitor spoken and written language in the country- and efforts to protect Jakania's minority communities.

Another key component of the education reforms is the restructuring of the public university system. Under the current system, the administration of universities is handled primarily at the district level but the new rules will allow a degree of asymmetry to recognise the differing needs of various institutions. The full details of this reorganisation are still to be announced but the centre-point will be the creation of a federalised national university composed of autonomous existing institutions in order to share teaching and research techniques.

Furthermore the government will relax rules around private schooling to enable targeted cooperation with private institutions when it is deemed beneficial to educational outcomes and diversity. In justifying these changes, the Premier pointed to examples where it may not be financially viable for the government to solely fund a particular school such as those providing specialist care to children with learning disabilities. In such cases, he argued that private organisations such as charities and faith groups may be able to support schools in partnership with the government. As with all the reforms being proposed the ultimate aim is to create a higher-quality system for all students.

Deltarian-Jakanian co-production snags top award in Rittersheim
Co-financed by Deltarian and Jakanian firms, Lost Space is among the most celebrated films to emerge from the prestigious Dundorfian festival

29 September 4770

As the annual Rittersheim concludes in the Dundorf, the media has been full of praise for a unique international collaboration between Deltarian production company Hvězda Productions and the Jakanian streaming service evFilm. Lost Space is a near future science-fiction film about two astronauts caught in a Majatran-operated space station that is pummelled by asteroids. The film focuses almost exclusively on the two central characters, portrayed respectively by Jakanian actor Acun Sunay and Deltarian actress Nataša Tesařová.

Lost Space involved a major investment from both companies with a total budget somewhere in the region of $100 million and represents an attempt to move into the realm of big-budget prestige filmmaking. Both companies have experienced success in the domestic and international market with their own productions before but their new film looks set to break new ground. The decision to premiere the film at Rittersheim, an important festival in the run-up to the Academy Awards, suggests a degree of ambition from the film's producers.

Critical response has been overwhelmingly positive so far, with particular praise reserved for the cinematography by Roland Hanuš. Writing in the popular Dundorfian magazine Fenster, Rita Freitag remarked, "Hanuš and director Gripus Aponius make deliberate homage to the most celebrated science-fiction films of the last millennia, while at the same time finding new stylistic ways to reflect the deeply personal story that the film seeks to tell". Both lead actors are being tipped for awards success in the coming months too, despite Sunay's career so far being primarily in critically maligned Jakanian comedies.

At the Rittersheim festival, Lost Space was awarded the top prize. The head of the jury, Sekowan director Osaki Shinobu, praised the film for its ability to "intertwine the relationship between the two primary characters with the broad themes and motifs of the space setting". Aponius and the cast were present to collect the award as well as give interviews to reporters and meet with fans who were able to attend the festival. President of the International Motion Picture Academy Anik Pyne, who organise the Rittersheim Film Festival as well as the Academy Awards, noted that the festival had attracted a higher-than-average number of attendees from the general public and attributed this to the attraction of a major, big-budget, science-fiction picture.

Jakanian health service working alongside 3M
15 May 4771

Image

DOKUZ, JAKANIA: The Jakanian Minister of Health Tugce Akkaya has confirmed that the national health service will begin sourcing important pharmaceutical drugs from the multi-national healthcare company More Medicament Manufacture (popularly known as 3M). Akkaya confirmed the decision in a brief statement to the press, following recent scrutiny over the manner in which the national health service sources equipment, drugs and other materials.

Healthcare leaders within the state-run service had been critical of rigid methods and procedures that have created inefficiency within the system. The government responded by denying that the healthcare system was managed in a political manner and making clear that it was an issue for professionals, not politicians. Nonetheless the decision to publicly refer to the new partnership with 3M suggests that Nuray Cevahir is keen to retain trust on the issue of public health.
