Embattled President Ndala will not run for re-election 22 December 5358
President Kamwanya Ndala has announced his intention not to contest next year's election after accusations of corruption surfaced against him earlier this year, in a statement to assembled reporters at the presidential palace. The President, who denies all alleged illegal activity, said he could not 'govern effectively' while the Department of Justice continued its investigations into the claims. The President is accused by opposition-affiliated media site Ntotonews.com of accepting bribes in the form of luxury gifts, in exchange for favourable mining rights being granted to private contractors in Bonde-Okda state.
Ndala is a member of the Ntoto People's Democratic Party (NPDP) but not its leader. The NPDP is led officially by former President Mudilu Kabasele, who could not run for the presidency in the last election due to term limits. Kabasele remains the public face of the party and is eligible to run again next year, as Ntoto only forbids three consecutive terms and not non-consecutive terms. Kabasele has already used this rule to complete two presidencies: one from 5324 to 5334 and one from 5339 to 5349. At 82, he could become the oldest president in Ntoto's modern history if he ran again.
The main opposition party, the Alternative Union for the Republic (AUR), is led by Kabasele's arch-rival Ndomba Musedi - who is 79. Popular in the north, Musedi has run for the presidency eight times but won just once. Due to the nature of Ntoto's politics, the NPDP enjoys overwhelming support in the south which is more populous than the AUR's heartlands. Both parties are broadly centre-right and conservative. With corruption allegations fresh in voters' minds, some believe this could be Musedi's best chance to re-enter power against his controversial nemesis.
Some smaller parties exist, including the center-left Social Labour Party (SLP), which has some support in Kiego, and the Change & Emancipation Coalition (CEC) which has just one seat and aims to cut across ethnic divides - but is mainly supported by Ntoto's often-persecuted "pygmy" minority. The electoral system grants each state several constituencies based on its population, with each constituency electing three members proportionally. Few states are competitive and most vote overwhelmingly for the NPDP or the AUR.
