Drogheda: The Ardtailte coalition government of LP and KL under the leadership of First Minister Michal Martin has put forth a law initiative that would make Kilani one of two official languages in the region. The proposal is part of the coalition deal between the Liberals and the Kilani League which promised greater rights for Kilani people and making the Kilani language official in the region. The law would require a 2/3rd majority in the regional assembly, something the coalition does not hold. Even despite this reality they have still put forth the law, stating that they are "confident" that a 2/3rd majority can be reached for the proposal. The Democratic Union in the region, the largest oppossition party, has hinted at possibly supporting the proposal as long as the regional government works with the federal government in the new federal economic plan rolled out last week. The Kilani League has, until now, always been adament on not working with the federal government but has hinted at a one time exception since the DU remarks, with their leader Darragh MacMurry stating that "if cooperation with the federals means a one time committment to improve our own economy and it also gives our people their language rights were open to discussing the possibilities."

A recent polls suggests that over 80% of Ardtailte residents would support Kilani becoming a official language, despite just 46% of the population being Kilani, which implies that even the Inglans in the region support the move. If a deal is reached, Kilani is likely to become a official language of the Ardtailte region by the end of next year, following the footsteps of their southern neighbour Sliabh Ard which made it an official language just a week after the regional election with their KL majority.

Ardue: President Kindellan has vetoed a bill that would have nationalized the entire energy sector. The move, the first of its kind under the new system, means the bill that would have passed such a nationalization does nto come into effect as it did not receive a 2/3rd vote in the Chamber or Senate. According to the description of the veto the president has issued the veto due to the "total" nationalization it would realize. Instead the President "would like to see some concessions for the private sector that will be beneficial to keeping energy affordable." This veto does however mean a crisis in government as the NP-DU coalition agreement had put the energy nationalization as one of the cornerstones of their coalition, with the NP pushing through this proposal despite some DU oppossition. But, even as a potential government crisis would result from this, Prime Minister Newman has pledged to stay on and has asked his secretaries to do the same, instead opting to work with the DU on a new proposal that would be acceptable to the President and both parties while still largely adhering to the coalition agreement. The move by president Kindellan entrenches him as a objective figure, with the oppossition almost unanimously praising the President for his move and "keeping the government on the ball and sharp."

It is expected that a new energy proposal is put forth in the National Chamber within the next few months, likely averting a government crisis.

Ardue: Likely as a result of the conflict between the President and the Prime Minister the National Party, led by PM Newman, has put forth a proposal that would call on a referendum to change parts of the just recently established constitution. In the proposal, the presidency would be made into an executive presidency, with the already powerfull presidents office turning into the strongest political office New Englia has seen in centuries. The proposal would made the President both HOS and HOG, abolishing the position of Prime Minister. The election of the president would be largely the same with two notable changes, the term would be lowered to 4 years and term limits abolished. The president would subsequently be made head of the armed forces and gain the right to draft decrees which would act as actual legislation unless a actual law overlaps, in which case that law overrides the order. Executive orders may also not concern civil rights, constitutional rights and legislative or democratic rights. The State Council would also be renamed into the Council of Ministers with departments named ministries and secretaries named ministers. Furthermore while the proposal keeps the election of the National Chamber and Senate largely the same, a electoral treshold is to be introduced for the Chamber with parties not winning at least 5% of the vote being excluded from gaining seats.

With the Democratic Union supporting the proposal it is likely that it will be moved through both chambers and, in turn, be subject to a referendum as soon as possible surpassing Presidential vetoes as it concerns constitutional matters. President Kindellan has condemned the move, citing that it "moves New Englia closer to a personalist dictatorship." But Prime Minister Newman made clear that it was nothing of the sort, stating that "these changes do nothing more then create a strong executive office from which the federal government can be run more efficiently and where we prevent the formation of inter executive rivalries." The federal structure and with it regional governments would remain the same in the proposal. Many wonder why Newman would sacrifice his own office, but political analysts state it to be a clever political move, as per constitution if such changes were to be passed a new presidential election should be held as the nature of the office has changed, allowing Newman to make a run for the presidential office. Opinion polling suggests a narrow majority of voters is in favour of a stronger executive, with many wondering if these ammendments might actually be enacted.

Ardue: According to some the New Englan voters have saved New Englia from authoritarianism, according to others they have prevented the majority from actually governing the country. In just one months time the political reality in New Englia has shifted and a new government will soon take shape. At the first day of the month, the constitutional ammendments passed by parliament were put forward to referendum, being narrowly enacted with 50.02% of voters approving the new ammendments, creating a new presidential system for New Englia. But as voters narrowly got along with the NP plan so far, thinks would take a turn in a different direction during the presidential election yesterday. With just two candidates on the ballot, current President Kindellan supported by all oppossition parties and former PM Newman supported by the NP and DU, many had expected Newman to cling to victory. But in a unexpected turn of events President Kindellan got reelected to a new term under the presidential system with 51% of the vote, outperforming the oppossition supported "no" vote in the referendum and defying expectations. Thus has thus twarted the NP plan of a complete government takeover and, according to polls, the hit on their popularity is clear with falling numbers accross the board. But Kindellan, despite winning a new and powerfull presidency, will have to come up with a good plan to form a government, as the NP-DU coalition still holds a majority in parliament. While Kindellan can form a government on his own without the need of a confirmation vote, any no confidence vote in his ministers could mean the quick end to such a government. Kindellan has announced he will seek cooperation from the DU and assurances they wont support no confidence votes. Hoping to form a stable government for the next 4 years.

Meanwhile Newman, seeing his plans falling through, announced his departure from politics and his resignation as NP party leader, with party leadership announcing a leadership election at the next party congress late this year. Did new Englia get saved from authoritarianism? Or is it still not in the clear?

Ardue: The political saga continues as President Kindellan is refusing to exercise his official duties unless a vote in the senate adopts his "final constitution". Kindellan, who had been a strong advocate for a parliamentary system since he assumed office as president, had pledged in his electoral campaign to adopt a new constitution that adressed both the demands from the right for a strong executive and demands from the left for a parliamentary system. In his final proposal, finalized two months ago, the President had created such a balance by once again introducing the Prime Ministers office (to be named Minister-President) as the head of government, responsible to parliament, while removing many presidential powers and rebranding the presidency as a representative of the state and office that keeps the government in line with the constitution. The Prime Minister would once again be the head of the country with the president having little influence on actual governance. The Minister-President would be appointed by the President but would then be in charge of appointing ministers, chairing the government, guiding foreign and domestic policy, leading the armed forces and basically any other function of government. The Presidents only remaining powers would be the appointment of the PM, the dismissal of the PM in case of constitutional violations or a political crisis, dissolving parliament on the State Council's request and appointing leaders in federal positions, such as the central bank, intelligence agencies, the military and the supreme court. In order to give in to part of the conservatives their demand the President included a full FPTP electoral system in the proposal, with all members of the Chamber and the Senate to be elected through FPTP elections thus likely encouraging the creation of two large party blocs which should mean more stable governments.

The President, instead of being elected popularly, would in this proposal be elected by representatives of all Regional Assemblies, major municipalities and both chambers of parliament every 5 years, with the possibility for renewing the term once. This way, most of the political focus will be on the parliament, which means more power to parliament as well. While the constitution would thus give both sides what they want conservatives are blocking its ratification, seeking to maintain the just established presidential system. President Kindellan has now stated he will veto every law and not commit to his legislative duties as long as the new constitution is not passed, meaning New Englia is in its hopefully final political deadlock. Negotiations on the deal are ongoing, but will this possibly final change actually help in governing the country?

President Duncan sets the stage for the constitutional referendum in September.
Early Edition | August, 5206

Arude - Benedict Duncan, the new President and Leader of the Liberal Conservative Party has promised to hold a constitutional referendum related to the efforts of former President Caolán Kindellan. The President was able to garner support from the National Party (NP), the Liberal Party (LP), the Democratic Union (DU) and the Kilani League (KL) in addition to other minor political parties from across the country. The constitutional referendum will restore a pure parliamentary system in New Englia with the Parliament of New Englia to continue as the supreme legislative body but keeping a more federal structure to the renamed Commonwealth of New Englia. The constitutional referendum to be held in September, 5026 to coincide with elections will provide the question: "Do you support the proposed Constitution of the Commonwealth of New Englia?". President Duncan's administration, which came to power in September, 5200 has generally been popular, enjoying the support of Englian's across the political and ethnic spectrum. The administrations focus has largely been on the development of infrastructure throughout New Englia's three regions and attempting to garner support of strong regional parliaments and First Ministers; something that Duncan has been noted to be "good at" according to First Minister of Sliabh Ard Iarlaith O'Flannery.

Duncan's Liberal Conservative Party stormed into electoral success in the September, 5194 elections after backbenchers of the National Party broke with the party over disagreements on spending and their role in Dovani. Duncan, the leading former backbencher of the National Party lead nearly a dozen members of the National Party to the newly formed Liberal Conservative Party. Duncan chose not to run in the September, 5194 Presidential election as a candidate for the LCP but supported former ally in the National Party, Solomon Newman. This changed when Orion Watts was elected as leader of the National Party and his contentious candidacy pushed the LCP away from cooperation with the National Party and in the September, 5200 Presidential elections the LCP ran Duncan as their candidate. The referendum is likely to succeed but doubts remain if the strong federal structure will remain underneath the constitution which doesn't make explicit provisions for administrative divisions of the new commonwealth.

Liberal Conservatives win majority; Constitutional referendum passes
Election Special | September, 5206

Arude - New Englian's widely approved the constitutional referendum proposed by President Duncan's administration. Of the nearly 27 million (27,487,987) registered and eligible voters, 57% of them (15,668,152) voted "for" the constitutional amendments with 41% (11,270,074) voting "no" and 2% (549,759) being ruled ineligible for a variety of reasons. The constitutional referendum will see the Republic of New Englia be formed into the Commonwealth of New Englia in a full parliamentary system, this removing the federal presidential structure that is currently in place. In addition to the constitutional referendum, the general elections saw the elections for the "new" Parliament of New Englia, a 500 member unicameral legislature that is the supreme legislative body of the new Commonwealth of New Englia. The largest party, the now former President's party, the Liberal Conservative Party (LCP) won out with nearly 173 seats, they were followed by the Kilani League (LP) with 127, the National Party (NP) winning 93 seats, the Democratic Union (DU) winning 81 seats and the Liberal Party (LP) winning the remaining 26 seats. The Liberal Conservatives have the clear mandate to the form a government and will likely seek to build a LCP-NP-DU coalition with former President Benedict Duncan as the first Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of New Englia.

Representatives from various political parties gave speeches following the announcement of the election results at the end of the day, the election will be formally certified after a review of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Duncan elected PM, announces cabinet
October, 5206

Arude - Following the electoral victory of Liberal Conservative Party and the constitutional referendum the former President and now Prime Minister has been settling into his new role in Ardue. The coalition government will be Liberal Conservative Party, the National Party and the Democratic Union; it will provide the new Prime Minister with a total of 347 seats in Parliament. The threshold for a two-thirds majority is 334 seats, giving the Prime Minister and his party an addition 13 seats in Parliament.

Prime Minister Duncan announced his cabinet as follows:

Prime Minister Benedict Duncan (Liberal Conservative Party, LCP)
Deputy Prime Minister - Calvin Howard (National Party, NP)
Secretary of State for Home Affairs (Home Affairs/Home Office) - Kian Moss (LCP)
Secretary of State for Foreign and Dovani Affairs (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) - Daisy Ross (Democratic Union, DU)
Secretary of State for Defense (Ministry of Defense) - Magnus Carr (LCP)
Secretary of State for Justice (Ministry of Justice) - Dr. Hendrix May (LCP)
Secretary of State for Health and Social Services (Ministry of Health and Social Services) - Dr. Sylvie Watts (NP)
Secretary of State for Housing and the Community (Ministry of Housing and the Community) - Lorenzo Hunter (NP)
Secretary of State for Labor (Ministry of Labor) - Christopher Berry (DU)
Secretary of State for Technology, Science and Research (Ministry of Technology, Science and Research) - Louie Spencer (LCP)
Secretary of State for International Trade and Economic Development (Ministry of International Trade and Economic Development) - Dominic Lloyd (LCP)
Secretary of State for Education and Culture (Ministry of Education and Culture) - Micah Wilson (NP)
Secretary of State for Sport and the Youth (Ministry of Sport and the Youth) - Elijah Thompson (DU)
Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Development (Ministry of Infrastructure and Development) - Alistair Martin (LCP)

Prime Minister Benedict Duncan confirmed reports that the New Englian Armed Forces (NEAF) approved the purchase of the newest generation of Unionfighters from Artanian Defense Group pending approval of the Dorvish government, which has traditionally approved the sale of Unionfighters to friendly or neutral nations. "I can confirm that the New Englian Armed Forces purchased a number of ADG Unionfighters to bolster the capabilities of the reformed Commonwealth Air Force (CAF)." The Prime Minister has made restoring New Englia's defense capabilities a priority and the Liberal Conservative Party campaigned on that promise. Secretary of State for Defense Magnus Carr, a member of the cabinet and head of the Ministry of Defense, confirmed that the purchase had been discussed for several months with representatives from Artanian Defense Group. The Secretary also confirmed that they had approached SlipStream, a formerly Luthori-based defense corporation about the purchase of a variety of military equipment. "New Englia has long been one of the most stable nations on Dovani and in what many consider to be the "Third World" of Terra and we cannot neglect that." The Secretary mentioned that the recent troubles have prompted many within the nation to desire a path towards peace. "We're committed to a united New Englia, a nation for all New Englians." Recruiters from the New Englian Armed Forces were granted authorization to redevelop their recruitment efforts in an attempt to bring new recruits into the reinvigorated service. Secretary Carr, Chief of the Defense Staff General Robbie Gardner and several other prominent members of the Defense Staff are expected to hold regular meetings with the Prime Minister. Secretary of State of Home Affairs also announced the reformation of the New Englian National Police into the Police Service of New Englia (PSNE) and announced the intention to arm all officers, both on-duty and off-duty and develop tactical response units meant to handle crises across the country.

In addition to developing the new defense for the commonwealth, the Prime Minister announced he would be devoting nearly $250m LOD to the restoration of infrastructure and development of fundamental infrastructure projects within New Englia. "I have tasked the excellent Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Development Alistair Martin will the development of the New Englia Infrastructure Project (NEIP) which, over the course of the next decade, will aim to connect New Englia by rail, land and air. I am happy to announce that the Ardue Metro will be the first such project to receive funds from the NEIP. I've spoken with the engineers and contractors for the project and they are optimistic that the project can be completed within a few years." New Englia remains somewhat of a "jewel" in Dovani, notably east Dovani, as one of the few nations to have been spared constant conflict and war. New Englia, a former colony of Kirlawa, was the site of many religious-based refugees. The Kilani population in New Englia are largely Aurorian Patriarchal but in recent decades Luthoranism has found a home in the Kilani. The Luthorians, sometimes called Englians, are generally Aurorian and were initially hesitant of the Aurorian Patriarchal Church but have come to accept it.

In an election dominated by the nation's environmental aspirations, the state of the economy and the centuries-long sectarian feud between the nation's Kilani and Inglian populations, voters rejected the nation's growing conservative class, instead turning to the centre-left in a move set to alter the very nature of politics in the nation for decades to come. In the lead-up to the vote, polls suggested that the nation's more hardline left-wing parties, notable the National Worker's Party, led by former trade unionist Paul O'Heffernan would have secured a sizeable majority after the party released its manifesto calling for a complete overhaul of New Englia's economy with the hope of creating a "people's economy". However, the centre-left Labour Party led by career diplomat Darren Martin secured an absolute majority, paving the way for the party's radical-yet-moderate reforms. Due to the size of the party's majority, the Labour Party is fortunate enough to avoid coalitions, having secured 456 of the 501 seats up for grabs. According to some political analysts, Martin's victory over both the Liberal Conservatives and the Worker's Party suggests that the nation has become tired of centuries of conservative governance and that it may not be ready to confront the reality of the nation's situation. In his acceptance speech, Martin stated that although his party had failed to campaign with the fervour of the worker's party on issues such as a "people's economy", he intended to make good on his word of working with those whose objectives are the betterment of the nation as a whole. Prior to the election, Martin stated that if the Labour Party were to win, regardless of the size of its majority, it would negotiate a coalition with the Worker's Party in a bid to unite the political left. At the end of his speech, O'Heffernan joined Martin to proclaim the coalition between the Labour Party and the Worker's Party. According to an official who was involved in the backdoor negotiations between the two parties, both parties shared similar philosophies on how New Englia should be governed with the only major difference being the degree to which said philosophies should be implemented. "As we begin the work of the people of New Englia, we will need the fervour of the Worker's Party on issues such as the environment, the economy and the welfare state. With our majority and their radical policies, we are certain that New Englia's future is secured," the official said. Although the coalition has not revealed cabinet positions, it is expected that O'Heffernan will be appointed Deputy Prime Minister with Martin being appointed Prime Minister.

Whilst on the campaign trail, Prime Minister Darren Martin guaranteed that the cabinet he intends on leading would not only reflect a diverse choice of individuals from numerous backgrounds but would be firmly planted in the idea of technocracy. He argued that the economic damage caused by successive conservative administrations has seriously damaged the stability and structure of the New Englian economy and thus the need for technocracy/experts to pull the nation away from the precipice was therefore needed. Although there remains the confirmation process, here is a peek into the Labour-Worker's Party Cabinet.

Secretary of State for Foreign and Dovanian Affairs: David Varkandar
David Varkandar is a seasoned diplomat, having been New Englia's Ambassador to the World Congress under the previous administration as an independent. A staunch regionalist, Varkandar has been a strong proponent for the creation of a more stable political and economic order in Eastern Dovani and the wider Dovanian continent.

Secretary of State for Finance and the Economy: Erica Miller
Erica Miller is a public policy analyst and economist, specialising in development economics. A former assistant professor of industrial economics at (Insert University Name), Miller has written numerous scholarly papers on the New Englian economy, all with a focus on analysing both the strengths and weaknesses of the nation’s industrial development strategy and macroeconomic stability. A proponent of economic planning, Miller has long voiced her support for economic planning playing a more central/important role in New Englian development.

Secretary of State for Home Affairs: Victor MacGrath
Victor MacGrath is a lawyer specialising in constitutional law. With more than 10 years of experience in the legal fraternity, he had recently served as a Senior Legal Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Secretary of State for Defence: Pippa O'Reilly
Although not a former member of the armed forces like her predecessors, Pippa O'Reilly is known as an experienced public administrator. Having served in numerous positions throughout the New Englian civil service, her time in the Department of Defence is expected to be her most difficult assignment as she is expected to lead a remilitarisation of the New Englian Defence Force (NEDF) on a tight budget.

Secretary of State for Justice: Dr Seth Matthews
Dr Seth Matthews is a long-standing MP and former university professor. Prior to his time as an MP, he was a Professor of Law at the University of Ardue. His time in the Department of Justice is expected to be a major transformation for the Department with a technocrat at the helm.

    Adovocate-General: Edmond Quaid, SC
Edmond Quaid is a veteran civil defence attorney, having worked in many of the nation's major law firms including Collins & O'Brien and Leonard & Leonard. Appointed as Senior Counsel in 5206, he served as the Vice-President of the Law Association of New Englia, the national association of lawyers and legal professionals/practitioners.

Secretary of State for Agriculture and Marine Resources: Rhys O'Hanlon
Rhys O'Hanlon is a lawyer specialising in property law. A self-described “small-time farmer”, O'Hanlon comes in response to the challenges faced by the previous government on land tenure and use of agricultural land.

Secretary of State for International Trade and Economic Development: Dr Alison O’Connor
A member of the worker's party, O'Connor has been responsible for the development of much of the Workers Party's economic development policies. An academic researcher by profession, O'Connor has been the Principal Researcher for the TUF (Trades Union Federation). Similar to her counterpart in Finance and the Economy, Dr O'Connor has written numerous scholarly pieces, most of which focus on the relationship between welfare and development.

Secretary of State for Education and Culture: Sinéad Walters
Sinéad Walters was in retirement having left the teaching profession before her appointment. A former secondary teacher and education policy analyst, Walters will face numerous challenges in the Department of Education and Culture most likely as it relates to enhancing the quality and accessibility of education among the nation’s youth.

Secretary of State for Health and Aged Care: Dr Caitlin Uí Muraíle
Dr Caitlin Uí Muraíle is a physician and hospital administrator with more than 20 years of experience. She is the former Chief of Emergency Medicine at St. Christopher's Hospital and former Chief Administrative Officer of Dunwich Medical Clinic, a non-profit medical research centre in Dunwich, South Englia.

Secretary of State for Labour and Social Services: Sibéal Mhic Aoidh
Alden Farr is a trade unionist, social justice activist and member of the Worker's Party. Previously, he served as the General Secretary of the All-New Englian Steel Workers Trade Union (ANESWTU). Described by Prime Minister Martin as a “passionate social justice activist”, Mhic Aoidh's ability to materialise the Labour Party and the Worker's Party's joint ambitions for a stable, well-structured welfare state will become the truest test of his passion for social justice.

Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Transport: Brandon Wilson
Brandon Wilson is an engineer by profession and temperament. A former university lecturer, he previously served as the City Engineer of Lonmouth before being tapped to serve in the Department of Infrastructure and Transport. His expertise in civil engineering will likely aid the administration in rolling out effective infrastructure plans.

Secretary of State for Technology, Science and Research: Dr Ethan Carr
Dr Ethan Carr is a theoretical physicist and string theorist and up to his appointment was one of the nation’s highly acclaimed scientific minds. Nominated to head up the Department of Technology, Science and Research introduced under the previous administration, Dr Carr's strong background in advanced scientific research will surely pave the way for great innovations among the New Englian people.

Secretary of State for Housing and the Community: Harvey Moore
Harvey Moore is a long-standing MP and one of the Labour party's staunchest supporters. Prior to his time as an MP and subsequent appointment, he had served as the Deputy First Minister of South Englia and as the province's cabinet minister for social development.
