August 22, 5372It's being called the 'most absurd coup in history'. For 28 nervewracking hours, the North Dovanian people held their bated breath as Prince Naiser of the Numair Dynasty entered the State Palace in Chinasa. It took thirty minutes to convince the prince to leave his loyal supporters, who had intended to stay with him - some even exploring the possibility of storming the palace and taking the levers of state control directly. In the end, prince Naiser ordered his supporters to demobilize, entering the palace under the escort of putschists. The Palace, long the face of state power in the nation, had been occupied by a cabal of usurpers, the self-declared 'National Recovery Front' (NRF), for hours. Threatening would-be saviors of the republic with the hostage situation of Chairman Kyung and access to top-secret military codes housed in the Palace databases, the NRF managed to diffuse the situation, getting the military to stand down. In the meantime, several key generals and over 2/3 of the Joint Chiefs of Staff pledged their loyalty to the new government, as NRF forces managed to reinforce and strengthen their positions around the State Palace. Approximately four hours after his detainment - initially thought by observers to be an arrest - Chairman Kyung released a statement as commander in chief ordering the Armed Forces not to 'encumber the fragility of the present political situation, and to put all faith into the resilience and flexibility of national political institutions'. It is unknown, but highly probable that these requests were made under a state of duress.
The State Palace continued to issue decrees that the national government complied with. Travel into and out of Chinasa was shut down, barriers were erected at prominent points of human traffic. Supporters of prince Naiser, gathered on the streets, that refused to comply with the new dispersal orders were subsequently pacified with tear gas and rubber bullets. Amarachi Uchechy, self-proclaimed chairwoman of the NRF, issued a statement that was broadcast to the monarchists, declaring that the NRF were friends of the prince and that he was in no harm. Despite these claims, no news or media emerged of the prince himself, who many feared to have been arrested within the confines of the State Palace. The public continued to wait in the dark, eager for any message, but the state palace grew silent. Rumors circulated that Chairman Kyung, prince Naiser, or even Uchechy herself had been killed, and that there was a massive struggle for power within the palace halls.
Then, at long last, the following image emerged:In a stunning turn of events, the State Palace released a photo of Chairman Kyung and prince Naiser shaking hands, holding a golden envelope between them. The NRF qualified these photos by producing a new document, allegedly within the golden envelope, declaring a new government order.
The contents are as follows: The Constitution will be temporarily suspended for a period of five years, replaced by a 'Mandate of Decree'. The Parliament will be dissolved until a later date, when the government deems it is safe enough to reconvene it once more. In the meantime, MPs still within government custody will be released and escorted to their home provinces under the protection of the armed forces. Chairman Kyung will continue his political duties as chairman, and the cabinet will be reconstituted to include prince Naiser. Prince Naiser will receive the special title of 'Protector of the North Dovanian Nation', he will be appointed head of the new 'Ministry for Pacification'; tasked with cultural duties and efforts to preserve national unity. Already, Keobi extremist organizations have began to seek reconciliation with the Ministry of Pacification, swearing loyalty to Naiser. Uchechy will assume the new office of 'Deputy National Director', and will preside over a 'Deputy Advisory Board for National Administration', or DABNA. DABNA will act as a de facto 'shadow government', having unlimited powers to override or modify the decisions of the de jure cabinet. The NRF will be dissolved, and all affiliates will retain their positions, immune to prosecution.
The situation is tense, but the siege of Chinasa is seemingly over as barricades are slowly lifted and the streets are selectively opened. The Federal armed forces have all sworn loyalty to this new arrangement, and even some ethnic extremists have been pacified by the new power granted to prince Naiser. Deputy Director Uchechy declared that she would begin a national de-arming campaign, working with prince Naiser and the Minsitry of Pacification to ultimately achieve unity in North Dovani. In a televised address today, standing beside Chairman Kyung and prince Naiser, the Deputy Director declared her commitment to the ultimate preservation of the federation, the defeat of ethnic extremism, and the restoration of democracy and the constitution. Time will tell if she is successful.
