Pro-Peace Coalition Defeats Government

Top: Parliamentary results. Bottom: Presidential results.

The pro-peace coalition has defeated the incumbent government after a highly contentious election. The incumbent President Ashon Keambiroiro has largely been blamed by the public for the loss of the Gayata archipelago to Vascania in a war he has still refused to concede. After a number of bombings by the Vascanians on Kurageri soil, the public mood moved sharply against the incumbent president and his populist party, while support for the social-democratic and pan-dovani Kurageri Reform Party increased. The eventual result was a victory for the KRP (shown above in green) and their allies the Worker's Group (shown in yellow).

In a system that uses the alternative vote for parliamentary and presidential elections, Ashon Keambiroiro and his party struggled to get the support of anyone besides their core group of hard-right supporters. Turnout also decreased from historic heights at the last election, as many poorer Kurageri citizens were disappointed with the military performance of their government. The new government, led by new President Malaya Andaiye - sister of the former president and current mayor of Kuga Afiya Andaiye - has promised to seek peace with Vascania and to develop the nation's natural resources, using the revenues from new trade to develop the standard of living in regional areas.

New president elected on radical anti-corruption platform
Hang 'em all!
July 4913

It is now official. The nation's Electoral Commission chair Sylvie Kyondo has confirmed that Charlie Nibogora the candidate of the New Frontier Party has been elected President of the Republic of Kurageri. The 64 year former human rights lawyer was the main surprise which saw 17 candidates vying to replace outgoing President Jomo Kanyinya. Nibogora won 56.4% of the vote on the first round. Previously considered only a fringe candidate, his fortunes turned around at the final debate hosted by the Hosian University in Kuga. The famously liberal Nibogora pledged to impose the death penalty for the nation's scourge, corruption for all who take bribes worth more than 10 LOD.

President-Elect Charlie Nibogora

Amidst gasps and shock in the university auditorium, Nibogora defended his position as such

We have been fighting all manner of ills in this beloved country for centuries. They all have a common cause and that is bribery, simony, kickbacks or to call them by their surname - corruption. Our health system is near collapse from corruption and outright theft. One can buy prescriptions from the same person who will sell you a stolen baby. Our education system is an auction house - the best paying students get the best grades. The rot is spreading and our nation cannot survive it long. That is why I am adopting this stance on corruption. We need an outright war on it and we need to cut out the rotten parts of the economy. I call on all Kuragi to join me in this crusade. You can vote for the others ad I assure you in five years the thieves will be ripping your kidneys out of your bodies.

He tapped into deep frustration in the average Kuragi's psyche. A day after the debate, support for Nibogora leapt from 3% to 28% after the president's nephew Tojo Kanyinya was implicated in a hospital construction tendering scam. After that with every new scandals, Nibogora gained another 5% in polling on average till he claimed the prize. He received 460,000 small donations from all over the country. In celebration of his victory supporters have been organising themselves into "Nibogora Accountability Squads" and flooding city halls all over the country demanding financial audits and so on.

President Signs Draconian New Anti-Corruption Law
Record popularity as manifesto promise largely fulfilled/i]
[i]November 4913

The Kurageri legislature has overwhelmingly approved the Destruction of Corrupt Practices Act. The lower house voted 197 to 3 while the upper house voted 50 to 0 in favour. They had little choice in the matter...tens of thousands of President Nibogora's supporters occupied the capital and blocked off the legislative building threatening to lynch any member "who supported corruption by voting against the measure.

The law will introduce capital punishment for all public officials who " engage in corrupt acts in the course of exercising their public duties". The infamous 10 LOD threshold promised by Nibogora was raised to 10,000 LOD. For lesser sums, public whippings, shaming, hefty fines, demotions and instant dismissals will be applied. The act also provides amnesties for black marketers who register their enterprises and pay taxes along with tax evaders who pay what they owe in the next three years. Corruption detection will be largely left to digital programs specially designed for detecting anomalies in revenue collection, ticketing etc. Annual audits of senior public sector workers" bank account and so called lifestyle investigation along with with increased funding for special anti-corruption courts are other measures contained in the legislation.

The President signed the bill at an official ceremony despite expressing reservations about what he deemed to be "an extremely high threshold" He hinted that he might hire a foreign company to conduct some of the investigation in order to avoid local politicians corrupting the process. The president's approval rating shot up to 86% immediately after the bill signing and few political opponents have dared criticise him over the harsher measures contained in the Act.

Nibogora "Welcomes Monitoring"

In what some have called a "left foot move", President Charles Nibogora has declared his joy at outside monitoring from the government of neighbouring Midway. Addressing several thousand members of the Abolish Bribery Coalition (ABC)

The government of Midway proposes to monitor my presidential action. I say to them - please do we all need to monitor each other. That is the supreme secret to fighting corruption. I will instruct my advisors to do the same to the new government in Midway - monitoring and scrutiny. A culture of open action and clean hands such as the ABC fights for is our ultimate aim

The President announced to the raucous crowd that he would not pardon "a single one" of the 36 high ranking officials who have been convicted of capital offences related to bribery. One of them is his former deputy minister of Agriculture Dr. Jakaya Nkurunziza who was convicted of siphoning more than 200,000 LOD to a fake company charged with collecting agricultural statistics. Since the Destruction of Corrupt Practices Act came into effect, forty three thousand people have been prosecuted for corruption related offences with some 7,000 convicted of largely minor offences and meted out public beatings, fines and professional demerits of all kinds .

Kurageri Condemns Temanian Government Violence Against Protestors

President Charlie Nibogora has condemned the Temanian government's response to anti-corruption protests. He appealed to the Temanian leadership to " emerge from the darkness of amorality to the sblazing sunshine of rule of law and respect for the people of Temania". The President said he would be watching the situation carefully and called on regional partners to address the Temanian crisis resolutely.

Meanwhile Finance Minister Siddhartha Magufuli announced that the country was projected to increase its revenue collection from 9.4% in 4913 to 16.8% in 4918 as many tax defaulters and dodgers have begun complying with the law. Magufuli said he hoped to fund better public services particularly education and health while also offering tax incentives to entice greater foreign investment.
