Second copper mine planned for Rajavant
     15 February 5440

Yadav Resources has announced plans to open a second copper mine in the state of Rajavant. The announcement follows the success of the Vascanian firm’s first open pit mine almost a decade ago. With support from both state and national government, Yadav Resources has experienced rapid growth in recent years. The firm’s success has been built on exploiting the state’s almost untouched copper resources.

Founder and owner Suraj Yadav emphasised the jobs that would be created through the opening of a second site in Rajavant. According to the firm’s estimates, the mine would employ over a thousand people when fully operational. In the short term, it would create additional jobs in construction to build the infrastructure connecting the site to the surrounding area. Yadav’s claims are controversial though.

Less than two years ago, Yadav Resources faced international scrutiny after 46 people were killed while striking for improved conditions. Though official police reports blamed workers for the deaths, various reports have suggested Yadav hired private security forces to supress the strikes.

Suraj Yadav has developed a close relationship with state and local government officials in Rajavant. Critics claim he used these connections to cover up wrongdoing. By taking extreme action against dissenting employees, the company has been able to keep wages low and conditions poor.

Yadav has received strong support from the senapati too. As part of the government’s economic plan, Vinay Talavalakar has sought to encourage a greater exploitation of the country’s natural resources. Copper is particularly important due to its use in high-value electrical goods. With the opening of a second mine in Rajavant, it is hoped that the country’s reliance on foreign imports will be reduced. In the long run, the government hopes to produce enough copper to export globally. This would contribute towards the broader project of diversifying the country’s exports.

Vascanian senapati Vinay Talavalakar dies aged 87
     20 May 5444

Vascanian senapati Vinay Talavalakar has died aged 87. For the past 23 years, Talavalakar ruled the country as a military dictator. He came to power in a 5421 coup d'état that followed a period of political instability. After widespread protests and the assassination of trade minister Ramaeshwara Ayyar, Talavalakar promised to restore order. In the following years, he oversaw an authoritarian regime that crushed its political opponents.

International media organisations and human rights defenders have characterised Vascania as among the least democratic countries in the world. Basic democratic freedoms were further restricted under Talavalakar’s regime and the arrest or disappearance of political activists became commonplace. The senapati justified his policies as necessary to preserve unity and stability in a country with a massive and diverse population as well as a fractured political history.

Talavalakar spoke throughout his rule of restoring Vascania’s economic power. He sought to reassert the government’s dominance over the large corporations that monopolised the Vascanian economy in the previous century. At the same time, he pursued diversification. Concerned about the country’s reliance on commodity exports, he supported policies to encourage the growth of the manufacturing sector.

In the immediate aftermath of Talavalakar’s death, attention has turned to succession. Having ruled Vascania for such a long period of time, there are concerns about stability. Talavalakar had a small group of close allies and advisers but he does not appear to have designated anybody as his successor. If there is going to be a power struggle, the battle lines are likely to be drawn in the coming days.

Yasvanth Bhanushan confirmed as next Vascanian senapati
     4 June 5444

Fifteen days after the death of Vinay Talavalakar, his successor as senapati has been formally inaugurated in a sombre ceremony in the capital. Like his predecessor Yasvanth Bhanushan is an army general with vast experience. Over the years, he had become a close advisor and personal confidant to the late Talavalakar. Bhanushan has been responsible for several projects that were central to his predecessor’s political agenda. For example, he led negotiations with the state-owned company Luthorian Petroleum over their role in Vascania’s oil and gas industry.

In spite of the close relationship, there are notable differences between the new senapati and his predecessor. Bhanushan is from a modest background and spent most of his early life in the northern city of Thikkonagama. When he was still a teenager, he won a competitive military scholarship. In contrast, Talavalakar was born into a well-connected Rajutti family and followed his father into the armed forces.

Bhanushan will deliver his inaugural address to the nation tomorrow afternoon. In the speech, he is expected to pay tribute to Talavalakar for his dedication to preserving stability and order in Vascania, as well as overseeing a period of economic growth and social harmony. After this, the new senapati will focus on his own priorities as he takes over the important business of government.

Bhanushan promises “revolution in Vascanian higher education”
     3 December 5457

Senapati Yasvanth Bhanushan has announced wide-ranging reforms to the Vascanian higher education system to enable more young people to attend university. Speaking at a university and careers event in Dolostipe, Bhanushan promised students and educators in attendance a “revolution in Vascanian higher education” over the next decade. The proposals form part of a broader government objective to move the Vascanian economy beyond a dependence on commodity exports.

Vascanian universities have consistently ranked among the best in the world in terms of international reputation and global influence. East Kayal University and West Kayal University have both previously been ranked the best in the world. In spite of the strong performance of elite institutions, only around nine per cent of Vascanians are university-educated. The aim of the senapati’s reforms is to expand access to higher education.

The most significant proposal included in the announcement is a plan to build sixteen new higher education facilities, including at least one in each state. The full plans will take place across the next two decades but the first students might be enrolled by the end of 5460. Each of these new institutions will have a different focus. A key objective of the senapati’s proposals is that they should tailor their offerings to the skills and employment prospects of local populations.

Expansion of Dolostipe shipyard announced by Vascanian government
     18 December 5461

Plans to expand Dolostipe shipyard have been announced by Senapati Yasvanth Bhanushan. After a period of consultation and discussion involving the maritime industry, the defence ministry, and local communities, the final approval was announced this morning. The announcement has been welcomed by local politicians, who claim the proposals will create jobs in the city and support the expansion of Vascania’s shipbuilding industry.

In the past, the military shipyard in Dolostipe was the most important in the country. The site was central to Vascania’s military expansion throughout the 49th century. In this period, it was responsible for producing the country’s first nuclear-powered submarines and its first aircraft carrier VIS Sagana. At the time, both were major milestones for the Vascanian defence industry. The shipyard became among the most important employers in the coastal city and contributed to its economic development.

Economic decline had a negative impact on the industry though. By the end of the 54th century, the shipyard had fallen into a state of disrepair and Dolostipe’s shipbuilding industry had effectively collapsed. With support from the Luthorian firm Kindall Shipyards, the renovation of the site began in 5409. In its modern form, the shipyard has been closely linked to the expansion of Imperial Vascanian Oil.

Under the proposed expansion plans, the Dolostipe shipyard would be able to produce military vessels for the navy once again. Due their sensitive nature, a decision has been made by the defence ministry to exclude foreign firms from a role in the new plans. Kindall Shipyards’ involvement in the civilian part of the site will continue though. Despite support from the local community, the plans have been criticised by some. Politicians from other states have expressed disappointment that the investment has not been shared with other parts of the country.
