Prime Minister: Country well on its way to recovery after "disastrous experiment with right-wing extremism"

Image

Prime Minister Ulysses Hart was given the chance to reflect on his first two years in office today at a public forum sponsored by the Society for Economic Reform, a center-left think tank. Mr. Hart began his remarks with an assessment of the previous administration. "The damage the far-right inflicted on our commonwealth cannot be overstated," Hart observed.
In just a few short years, the Whigs and their right-wing allies managed to almost completely dismantle the social safety net, plunging millions into poverty and economic uncertainty. The enacted bigoted, regressive policies that cruelly punished minorities. They attempted nothing less than the restoration of monarchy and a landed aristocracy, a backward system where blood and birthright meant more than talent and ability, and they came perilously close to succeeding. But we're on our way back.
Widely seen as a pragmatist and consensus-builder, Hart has spearheaded the passage of child labor protections, antitrust regulations, the partial restoration of public healthcare, more humane immigration enforcement policies, and the reduction of the hugely unpopular general sales tax. "Together with our Socialist allies as well as the UDP, the RP, and the RCG, we have already achieved so much in restoring reason and order to government. My colleagues on the Right have demonstrated that conservatism need not and should not be synonymous with bigotry, hatred, and mindless nationalism."

Hart has come under fire from his party's left wing over supposedly sacrificing progressive principles in order to secure short-term legislative victories. There is reportedly no love lost between Hart and his own nominal party leader, Aparna Johar. Johar initially refused to join a coalition including center-right parties out of a fear that the "Civic Republican League would lose its heart and soul in the name of compromise." She was overridden by the CRL's central committee, but has steadfastly refused to step down as leader and has indicated that she intends to stand for re-election at the party conference later this year. Johar has remained conspicuously silent on the performance of her deputy leader as Prime Minister, but has delivered a series of speeches to left-wing groups on such topics as single-payer healthcare, a universal basic income, and carbon taxes that have contained what many consider to be veiled attacks against Mr. Hart and his more conciliatory approach to governance. For his part, Mr. Hart has largely ignored Ms. Johar, and remains confident on his party's and the country's prospects.
You can either work with others and get 50% of what you want, or try to bully your way through and achieve nothing. Of course I want a return to single-payer and welfare reform, of course I want a higher corporate tax rates, a chemical weapons ban, and any number of other things, but the fact of the matter is the voters wanted a coalition of the center and we owe it to the Rutanian people to come together. We could have remained in the opposition and just shouted from the sidelines, but I for one am I happy that we stepped up to govern. I'm confident that the voters will come around again on progressive policies--they elected a Socialist President, after all--but for now incrementalism is the way forward.
There have been key points of contention between coalition members--most notably on immigration, tax reform, and abortion rights--but Hart offered nothing but praise for his center-right coalition partners, as well as President Scott and the Democratic Socialists--long-time CRL allies. "Everyone has done their bit in holding off the tide of extremism and monarchism. I hope our colleagues on the Right have noted just how instrumental the so-called 'commies' have been in building consensus. Perhaps it's time we move beyond slurs and generalizations."

When asked if the CRL will abstain from fielding a presidential candidate the upcoming elections, perhaps as part of a deal to retain premiership in the event of a UDP, RP, or RCG presidency, Hart responded: "The CRL has always fielded a presidential candidate in the first round. We might throw our support behind another party in the second round, but we view it as our right and duty to put forth someone who exemplifies the Civic Republican values of fairness, compassion, and the good society. We owe the people that choice." When asked as a follow-up if he intends to run for the presidency, Hart demurred. "That's up to the party. If they decide to nominate me, I will stand. If they nominate my good friend Aparna Johar, I will support her wholeheartedly. But for now I am honored to serve the commonwealth in my current capacity."

Curtis shuffles NCP front bench
April 4300

National Coalition Party Leader Luke Curtis launched a massive reshuffle of his party’s front bench in the run up to next year’s general elections. Six longtime members of the party’s 17-member front bench stepped down.

Former Education Minister Lucy Peters will replace Eve Waters as Party Vice President. Former Deputy Leader Tony Ivey will replace Former Justice Minister Roger Quand. Samantha Hewitt will be replaced by Ellen Lewes as the party’s Infrastructure and Transport spokesman. David Mallory will be replaced by Ben Stephens as the party’s Food and Agriculture spokesman. Former Prime Minister Adam Pollard stepped down as the party’s spokesman for the Environment and Tourism; Nick McCarr will replace him. Health and Social Services critic Jack Goldie will replace Tilly Gregory as the party’s Trade and Industry spokesman. Of the six spokesmen who resigned from the front bench, only Quand is seeking reelection to the House next year.

With Lucy Peters leaving the Education brief behind her, Shannon Rose will replace her. With Tony Ivey moving to Justice, Priyanca Shah will replace him as the party’s Science and Technology spokesman. With Jack Goldie moving to Trade and Industry, Rachel McDonald will replace him at Health and Social Services.

The massive shakeup is part of the leadership’s attempts to diversify the party. Women now hold six briefs as opposed to the previous five. In addition, Rose, McDonald, and Shah are the first people of color to sit on the party’s front bench since Margaret Catto was first appointed. Ben Stephens is also the first LGBTQ representative to sit on the front bench. Furthermore, with these new appointments, the average age of the party’s front bench dropped from 61 to 54.

WNC Chairman Winston Vernon
Whig National Council Chairman addresses Rutanian Center for Right-wing Reform:

Prime Minister Hart's government is engaging in class warfare, their Fair Taxation Act sent federal revenue tumbling while pushing the tax on luxury goods to a punitive 40% and doubling the Corporate tax rate. Many businesses have expanded and flourished under the last 30 years of Pro-business policies, they seek to see the end of that. The Prime Minister's government pushed this tax reform after passing laws increasing federal involvement in Healthcare; and yet the Prime Minister's government has presented no new budget to the Peoples Assembly. I believe President Scott and Prime Minister Hart are attempting to bankrupt the Commonwealth all while choking out any success of the free market. There has been absolutely no fiscal responsibility from this government, they speak of economic justice but they seem to have no sense of basic mathematics. Further decreasing revenues the government now grants tax incentives to businesses that contribute to their workers social security, that might be a great idea but they should pay for it. I don't know how Health and Social Services Minister Kelly Downing is able to fund her department paying for the poor's healthcare with no new increase in funds.

The Whig Party will be pursuing a message of 'free market principles' in order to prevent any further empowering of the malignant Union influence and any other communistic policies. Furthermore we shall continue to stand against the nanny state and the under the belief that freedom and responsibility is the only true safety net.
We believe that we must highlight the dangerous fiscal lack of responsibility from Prime Minister Hart's government. We shall continue to stand for awarding those whose actions have merited it with rank and recognition, we shall continue to stand for dignity and the belief that individuals can rise above the baseness of society and we shall reject the notion that everyone must be brought down so low as to be equal with a common beggar who doesn't have enough wit about him to pull himself up by his bootstraps We have entered discussions about supporting a candidate to remove the leftist from office and restore confidence in our markets.

Gathering lots of attention, many Whig supporters arrived to the RCRR armed, and heavily at that. Their militant presence was summed up by one Whig attendee:
We've got to send a message to the degenerates and foreigners, that just cause Arthur Scott is president this is still our country and we will fight to defend its culture and heritage if the need should arise.

Their heavily armed nature was made possible only by passage of the Arms Reform Act

Bennett Corp. CEO & WNC Council Member Albert Bennett
Bennett Corporation Announces plans to lay off a total of roughly 300,000 workers in 3 different states by March 4301

The Bennett Corporation today announced that it will be laying off a total of roughly 300,000 workers in various sectors of the Corporation from their operations in the states of Ardinia, Khodor, and Kragusrov by March 4301. The Corporation cited increased cost due to the Fair Taxation Act and very low investor confidence causing stock prices to stay relatively low. The vast majority of the lay offs are expected to come from the companies Shipping and Financial services division. The corporation has seen alot less financial transactions thanks to increased taxes and the prospect of taxes going even higher. Some analyst speculate this move could be political due to Albert Bennett's seat on the Whig National Council, they accuse Mr. Bennett of planning this to stir up anger at the government in Vanderburg due to their economic policies.

In other news another member of the Whig National Committee, Carlton Banks has also made the national news circut after making derogatory comments about Foreign Secretary Masoud Janssen of the United Democratic Party, Banks was quoted saying :
Of course this government is leading us to ruin, what do you expect when you got foreigners like that Kalistani Foreign Secretary, if they werent born here how can we expect them to have the Rutanians people's best interest in mind, I'm telling you if we don't get the leftist out of the power in Vanderburg we can all expect more and more degenerates in charge.

Capital Star's March through Vanderburg
Big Surprise during Capital Star's Parade in the Capital

On January Second a blast from the past occurred as the Capital Star's Militia conducted a paraded on the streets on the Capital. The parade, along with other activities was held to in celebration of the units reformation late last year. The group of close to 1000 men was met with moderate applause, many people on the street had came out to celibate while many others were just curious of what was going on. The unit made up solely of New Veterans has a significant history to live up to, as it famously held under siege by Royalist forces a large section of the city as a neutral safe zone for Civilians. However this was not the only excitement today...

Image
Gen. Henry Stratton at Capital Star's Parade

In a shock that has now over shadowed the event, during the end point at the parade former Gen. Henry Stratton spoke in front of the crowds and showing great energy announced his bid for the Presidency in this years 4301 elections.

Ladies, Gentlemen and my fellow Compatriots as we mark the start to a great new year I would like to tell you I will be running for President in this up coming election! With the current recession and a Nuclear Armed Dorvische Republik to our north the future is more uncertain then ever. A strong leader who has the right experience and a good wherewithal is the only one who can handle these calamities and I tell you I am the man for the Job! I promise you, I will bring a up swing to the economy, bring all our lost jobs back to Rutania, and Safe Guard the Nation from any threat. If elected the caliber of the problems I will face will be great, but I talk you I am up for the challenge

The energy from Stratton's speak transferred to the crowd who showed him with cheers and applause. However after the fact critics have been quick to point at the General's age, this year turning 81 as a potential problem as his heart problems are rather publically known.

President Henry Stratton's inauguration

4302 Presidential Inauguration

As of the turn of the year former Gen. Henry Stratton has become President as if destined since his announcement of running this time last year. Shockingly he won with a 50% majority in the first round with the overwhelming support of both center and right-wing parties. Though the seeming consentual support from most in the nation for the veteran the Nation Coalition of Rutania has voiced great opposition to him and it seems they will look to fight him at every turn during his term as President secondarly they have denounced the Rutania Party, who President Henry Stratton is Co-Leader of the party along with Conrad Maxun.

National Coalition Party leaves center right coalition

June 4302

Months after the November 4301 elections and with no government in sight, National Coalition Party interim leader Richard Gillard has sensationally announced that his party will leave the center right coalition that currently contains the Whigs and the Conservatives.

Months after the November 4301 elections and with no government in sight, National Coalition Party interim leader Richard Gillard has sensationally announced that his party will leave the center right coalition that currently contains the Whigs and the Conservatives.

The NCP and its allies were blindsided by the actions of President Henry Stratton and Conrad Maxun’s Rutania Party in the immediate aftermath of the election. The Rutania Party’s leadership had reached out to the Whigs, Conservatives, and NCP in an attempt to form a government and support Stratton’s bid for the presidency. While the Whigs and Conservatives backed Stratton, the NCP; per its policy, abstained from endorsing a candidate. Stratton won the office but immediately withdrew from the potential coalition.

Gillard has since been the most vocal critic of President Stratton and Conrad Maxun. With Maxun’s cabinet poised to fail, Gillard proposed an opposition cabinet that included the Whigs, Conservatives, and United Democratic Party. While generating significant support in the House, the UDP has yet to signal their readiness to form a new government.

Consequently, the Whigs issued a new proposal that excluded the NCP. Richard Gillard immediately announced that his party would go into opposition.

However, as Gillard is only serving as leader until the formation of a new government, it is quite possible that his successor will return to the center right bloc. Party sources are also suggesting that as a result of the Rutania Party’s betrayal, the NCP might field a candidate for the presidency.

WNC Chairman Winston Vernon

Beleaguered Whig National Council stands firm in hopes of forming a coalition with President's Stratton's Party

Despite the shocking move by the Rutania party to form a government without the right-wing parties that helped to put President Stratton in office the Whig National Council has stated that they haven't given up hope on forming a government comprised of the coalition that elected President Stratton. The decision by Whig leadership has led to a deterioration of relations with the NCPR, causing them to leave the Rutanian Center for Right-wing Reform. The WNC has called this the best possible course of action for the Rutanian people in order to prevent early elections, the prospect of which seems to hang on the UDP now. WNC Chairman made this statement:

Look some people in the RP's leadership made some really poor choices, we don't intend to hold it against the entire Rutania Party, hopefully they will get rid of Conrad Maxum though, I mean he is a hack and should be fired. What it really comes down to now is getting the United Democratic Party on board.

Rutaina Party Purge

After the resent snap election in which the Rutania Party lost the Presidency all of its members in the People's Assembly unanimously voted for snap vote on its Leadership by party members.

Of the two current leaders Henry Stratton managed to barley maintain his position as Co-Leader with the second greatest number of vote, with some members of the party very upset that he lost the Presidency in the snap election. The unsurprisingly big change in the party was the ousting of Conrad Maxum from the position of Co-Leader, many are pointing at him as for the current failings within the party, especially after putting forward a faulty cabinet which caused the snap elections, created the conflict between them and the NCPR, in addition to the parties new bad rep within the Assembly.

Replacing him is a relative new comer to the party's inner circle Ludwick Anderson a large powerful man he has gain the reputation that he is a safe choose by not taking risks.

Bennett Corporation Stocks soaring

The Bennett Corporation, a major Rutanian corporation headed by CEO and Whig National Council member and former Presidential candidate Albert Bennett is seeing some real growth as things in Vanderburg seem to finally be getting back to normal. After the election of Arthur Scott in 4297 Bennett Corp stocks lost more than half their value after years of steady growth helped by relaxed free market polices from Vanderburg. The election of 4301 gave a small boost to the stock price that quickly dissipated due to two years of infighting in Vanderburg. Those stocks have now reached a new high as investors feel increased confidence in the stability of policy from Vanderburg. The new Center-Left coalition under Prime Minister Masoud Janssen leaves investors thinking that the chaos may now be over. Other factors such as the Market Relief Act have done wonders for Bennett Corp and several other companies by relaxing regulations, deregulating stock markets, and banning Union shops and of course lowering the corporate tax rate. This economic bill was then followed up by the Economic Stimulation Act of August 4303 which has caused a spur of spending on luxury goods and reduced taxes on the top brackets, something that market analyst expect to cause increased investment in months to come.

In other news the Peoples Assembly narrowly passed a Resolution to condemn the Interim leader of the NCPR Richard Gillard for obstructing the legislative process. signaling their is still some bitterness in the legislature. While the battle for national economic policy seems to have been won by 'free market values' as the Whigs describe them a new debate seems to be beginning as the UDP has introduced bills to reexamine the Commonwealths social safety net. Only time will tell if the divisions of the past few years will resurface in these new debates
