Last Privatized Foundry Closes
"We can't make a profit in Kalistan" says Investor Group

Eshar, Odufaray
April 10, 4515

Image
The last foundary privatized by the Liberal-New Way Privatization Plan closed in January

Former national assets privatized and sold off at a price on average of 10% the book value of the assets at auction by the Liberal-New Way Privatization plan have had a rough four years since privatization. The last foundry previously owned by KalNaFerCo closed at the beginning of this year due to high costs and lack of ability to return on investment. The Foundary, owned by Eagle Venture Capital Associates LLC, was shuttered in January, laying off the last of the 350 workers who had worked at the Eshar plant. EVCA bought the foundry as part of a speculation deal from Eshar Properties two years ago, as Eshar Properties was going through bankruptcy proceedings. EVCA was the fourth such owner of the foundry, which has seen parts sold off over the years, and workers laid off.

"We have worked at this foundry for decades," said veteran foundry employee George Dyer. "I voted Liberal, because they promised that our standard of living was only going to go up. And now, I've lost my job. I am 54 years old. Where am I going to get another job? I've seen my wages cut in half and then cut in half again: my manager told me that I could rely on welfare to make up the difference. But UBI used to supplement my income. I can't even make my bills anymore."

The Foundry has met a similar fate to most of the state assets that were privatized 7 years ago. Most of KalNaPeCo's former assets have also been capped, awaiting a return in high oil prices. Ananto Straits Holdings, who purchased many of the assets for a tiny fraction of their value, and subsequently sold them to various other companies piecemeal said "Well, the problem is, of course, the buyers could not make a return on their investment. The thing that allowed these rigs to operate at the high prices they did, and I suppose employ the workforces they did, was the fact that we did not have to compete with one another, and the fact that we could operate at margin, rather than have to return profit to investors. Ananto Straits got out early, and we made a tidy profit on our sales, but those who purchased them later well, they are taking a bath now, because they can't make a profit on it."

Unfortunately, when these assets are closed because they cannot profit, the things they used to supply are no longer manufactured.

SP spokesperson Edward Tyler said, "We find that we have had to begin importing so much that we used to make ourselves. While we may save a little money this way, compared to what it would cost us if we were able to buy from Kalistani Companies, this puts our national supply of strategic materials in the hands of foreign actors who can, for any reason shut off our supply. If they can't profit on it, Kalistani companies do not produce it. It has nothing to do with whether or not it is needed. All these companies care about is making a profit. And if they can't they just shut down. We can't rely on that, so we have to admit that foreign suppliers are more reliable than Kalistani venture capitalists."

There have been very few success stories from the Privatization. But those are few and far between. For the most part, the privatization has produce a real shift in the economy, and generally the only Kalistanis who have benefitted have been investors who have become specialists at buying and selling millions of shares of the new companies dozens of times daily to earn fractions of cents per share.

SP and NCP Militia units hold joint training in Ananto
Bozo River Facility shows value as World Class Maneuver area

Bozo River Combined Arms Training Center, Ananto
May 12, 4515

In a six month deployment meant to train both militias to stand up as auxiliary defenses of Kalistan, Units of the recently reformed Revolutionary Socialist Militia of Kalistan and the Provisional Conservative Army of Kalistan conducted joint training exercises between August 4514 and February 4515 at the Bozo River Combined Arms Training Center. Both forces formed within a short time of one another, and both have committed to serving as partisan forces in the Armed Forces of Kalistan.

The operation, dubbed Anantonese Dominance was aimed at both training and sharing tactical doctrines between the two militias, but also fraternizing and increasing the bonds between the two Units. Corporal Howard Hibiscus, a partisan commando from the RSMoK said, "Well, as far as I know, this is really the first time the Conservatives have had a militia for us to train with. When the PCAK was around before, the SP was not active, and well, before that it was just the Socialists. But I've made a lot of life long friends during this rotation, for sure. We may disagree politically, but everyone agrees that we are here to fight for the Republic, and so we're pretty much on the same page."

Units of the RSMoK included units from across Kalistan. Units ranged from Light Infantry Battalions to motorized cavalry, to artillery. The only units that did not rotate into the training facility were the LAFA units which remained on coastal duty during the exercises. PCAK units included three battalions of Infantry, as well as irregular units of support and armor, in which the PCAK also specializes. Both groups fired for rotary wing craft.

Lt. Gerard Grandin, who is a battery commander for a unit attached to the 3rd Battalion of the Ananto Artillery regiment said, "The good thing about training with the Conservatives is first of all, we get to know one another, and at night, we might have some spirited discussions, but then we always shake on it and realize we ain't going to solve ideology over beers out in the field. But the Conservatives bring a lot of capabilities we don't have. While we specialize in manuver and shock, and various irregular tactics, the Conservatives have a much more highly trained armor focus. We were able to show them some things, they were able to show us some things. I mean, you don't get this kind of experience running wargames at the OCS. And since we are militia, we are able to do things that the Regulars aren't, so we can learn how to disable tanks, and they can learn how to blow up bridges and fork comm, and things like this."

Image
PCAK Armor enters a hot zone and fires in support of Conservative militia units on the move

LtCol. Angelica Bellomo, Commander of the 5th Batallion, PCAK gave The Kalistani Republic a run down on the training cycle:

Lt. Col Angelica Bellomo, Commander, PCAK V Bn wrote:"We started of kind of slow. We had the Socialists and the Conservatives bunk together in the field barracks. At first there weren't a lot of training exercises. The goal was to increase familiarity and camaraderie between the two groups who might otherwise be somewhat standoffish of one another. There were tensions at first: some of these young people can be hotheads. But after the second week, things cooled down and we got into training. The officers devised stress test exercises that included very long, multi day forced marches, field bivouac, lack of food, lack of sleep, and extreme physical exertion. Much more than most of these young kids are used to, for sure. Hell: Much more than the salty officers are used to.

"Following the stress tests, which most of my troops called hellish, we let them rest once more. They realized they had been through this trial all together and that they had more in common as a team than as opponents. We made them solve problems as a team, we made them think as a squad. Most of these squad units became fiercely loyal to one another. And then we took them out into the field, and started with squad on squad tactics. We did this for a month or more, and soon we were into late October. Then we brought the platoons together into Companies, and put one against another to capture or hold some objective. Other times we would practice maneuver. the troops received classes in demolitions, in psyops, in signals intelligence. They also fired artillery, fired the main guns on the tanks. You name it. It was a rigorous, miserable six months. But these men and women made it through. I think doing these joint training exercises from time to time will be nothing but advantageous."

Militia PFC David Jefferies, infantryman in the RSMoK agreed with the Lieutenant Colonel. "We learned so much. I think Kalistan is far better defended now that they have stood up the militias. I mean: Since they basically canked the NSP, there's a lot of kids in the RSMoK who would be doing National Service, but had to join the militia instead, because there's no work for the NSP. So this job keeps us from suffering from lack of a job, you know? And it teaches us some valuable stuff, and also we get to shoot at sh-t and blow sh-t up. You know what I mean? The militia has a long tradition in Kalistan. This is an important job, you know?"

Image
Conservative and Socialist Partisans aimed at fake Lourennaise targets during live fire exercises

The operation, which had the strategic goal of training the militias for a possible invasion of Kalistan used the most obvious "enemy": The Government of Lourainne, as its faux-target. "Ha ha, yeah, we called em all sorts of bad names, stuff I can't say in the paper," said Militia Staff Sergeant Valarie DelGado. "Stuff I wouldn't want my mom or my Meeting to know I said. Well, I mean come on: They've never invaded but they did kill the President back in the day and they sunk a bunch of ships. If anyone's gonna invade its gonna be them, and if we don't train, we ain't gonna be ready to kill them by the boatload... It's all in fun though. I don't have a problem with the Lazies, personally. But I do know you can't trust a man who complains about weed but never smoked it. Just sayin..."

To all accounts, Operation Anantonese Domination went off without a hitch, and looks to provide a blueprint for future cooperation between the two militia forces in the future.

Election Special !

Crowds at the LDP HQ waiting for results !

Last night as the late hours rolled in the Election results were finally starting to arrive, and despite the continous propaganda that this was “the last election of the LDP” and “The economy is in shambles”,the people begged to differ as the Liberal Democratic Party once again retained their 70 MP majority in Parliament and also Ceaser Furhat was once again re-elected for the seventh time as President of the Republic. Even as the SPoK,UKWF and NCP were all united in their attempts to elect the Conservative candidate Narelle Ewart which was advertised as a Centrist candidate which could take votes from all sides, the Incumbent Ceaser’s popularity and trust among the people prevailed as he not only managed to get 4 million more votes then his own party but also got the endorsement of the Patriotic League for the 2nd Round of the Presidential Elections, which was a clear indicator of his ability to unite and lead all sides as a President should be able to. In his victory speech large crowds were present and these were some of the most importants parts of the President’s speech:

Thank you,Thank you all so much.We have come a long way,not only on this election cycle but throughout the 15 Years of LDP steered governments we’ve had,We have achieved many reforms both social and economic, and we have improved the people’s standart and way of life and because of this we have once again gained the gratitude of our nation as i have been re-elected and the Liberal Democratic Party has recieved the majority in parliament. As you know these are my last 3 years as President as i have stated before the elections,i was very hesitant to run again, but what i have seen, the drive, the support, the admiration of the people is truly incredible and i’m glad i did it,i have no regrets, and never will. I will try to do everything to make this last mandate of mine, one of cooperation and success,so that i may leave this high and noble office which at that point i will have held for 18 whole years, with dignity and honor and i will retire from active politics knowing that i will be loved by the people as much as i love them.I would also like to thank the citizens which support the Patriotic League for voting for me in the 2nd Round with the endorsement of their party,i am truly honoured and i wish our politics can always be in such forms of cooperation and understanding even though we are polar opposites.Ofcourse i also congratulate my opponents and especially Madame Narelle which led a great campaign !
Thank you all ! Long Live Prosperous Kalistan !

NCP Reacts to Elections
Conservatives Announce Plans for the Future and Denounce the Patriotic League, and Director Keen Retires
Image
NCP Presidential Candidate Narelle Ewart Upon Receiving Election Results 13/10/4515

Disappointed by the results of the 4515 elections, NCP officials have voiced their frustration but also announced their plans to step up their game for the next election. Narelle Ewarts, Speaker for the NCP Minority and defeated NCP Presidential candidate, has told Right View reporters that Conservative Representatives will introduce new legislation to the National Assembly, including the continuation of attempting to reopen government industries deemed imperative to the well being of the Republic. Rep. Ewarts claims this "Conservative Blitz" will begin with the registry of the Conservative Army of Kalistan and go on until the end of the election cycle in 4518.

The administrative council of the National Conservative Party has also released a formal denunciation of the Patriotic League for "hypocrisy, betrayal, and extreme ideals". When asked by Right View reporters why the NCP has decided to denounce the PL, Chairman Wyman gave the following statement:
The Patriotic League is, at its core, anti Kalistan. Just look at their previous bill proposals. Over this past election, we've been campaigning in order to win the Presidency and it had actually been the Patriotic League who convinced us to get serious with running this time around. They actually claimed they would endorse Narelle Ewarts in order to "Simply to oust the liberal president". Of course, no matter what the reason, an endorsement is an endorsement, so we graciously accepted. Later the PL made some demands which included segregation of government property, decreasing civil liberties, and the creation of the police state, to name a few. We naturally refused these demands and after the election came around, it turned out that they apparently lied about having a problem with President Furhat because they had decided to endorse him instead. Of course we have no reason to be upset that President Furhat won a seventh term, it's actually an admirable feat, we're just irritated that those PL weasels would so unreasonably stab us in the back like that, they had to have known that the Liberals wouldn't have passed their atrocious policies.

In related news, Director Bryce Keen has announced his resignation from his position and retirement after the NCP's electoral defeat. With the position of Director left open, Chairman Jakab Wyman will once again assume the position of Acting Director of the National Conservative Party. Party elections for the position have been scheduled for the first half of 4316.

Exclusive Interview: Van Wyck to become next Premier
Socialists agree to remain in government despite shuffling

Kaliburg, Ananto
November 28, 4415

Image
The Socialist Party Speaker, Georgia Van Wyck set to become Premier of the Republic in new Grand Coalition

Despite a failed endorsement for President, the Socialist Party of Kalistan made an important Gain in ensuing Government negotiations. Speaker for the Socialist Party, Georgia Van Wyck is set to become the next Premier of the Republic, and as a result, will have a major hand in setting the Government's Agenda. Van Wyck was surprised by the nomination, as she stated in Izquierda's exclusive interview with the incoming Premier.

H(oward) G(reaves, of Izquierda): We are here with the next Premier of the Republic, Georgia Van Wyck.

(Speaker) G(eorgia) V(an) W(yck): Yes you are.

HG: Comrade Van Wyck, you have been named to the Premiership. What was your initial reaction?

GVW: I was surprised. The negotiator I sent to talk to the President certainly did not indicate that this was going to happen, and I wanted him to promote military modernization. Instead, someone, I think it was the Conservative negotiator, put the SP up for the Premiership, and the President agreed. So, that's how that went down. I certainly wasn't asking for it.

HG: But according to the Prerogative, you are the leader of the largest Non-Presidential Party in the Government Coalition. Many of your Party believe you should have taken the office six years ago.

GVW: The Right was the majority in the Coalition back then. There's no way I could do that job successfully under those circumstances.

HG: What is your agenda for the next three years?

GVW: We are working with the Workers' Front and the National Conservatives to try to get some of these shuttered industries reopened. The Liberals' paper said everyone is complaining about how the economy is so terrible. That is not true. The economy is at about the same place as it was when they privatized everything. The promised bonanza never materialized, because, lets be honest: Why would it? But the one thing which HAS been hurt is the Republic's ability to build things for itself. We have been propping up these industries for hundreds of years in some cases, and sudden and radical divestment led to costs which made basically every divested property immediately go into the red. Some people tried to keep them running for a time, but let's be completely honest: While they were nationalized, they made money because they were heavily subsidized and had a guaranteed buyer. We only produced the stuff we needed, and the companies then could sell surplus VERY inexpensively, as a way of improving Kalistani exports.

Without those subsidies, they are operating on market principles. They bear all the costs themselves. And they just can't make it. They have to find buyers for their products, and market forces force prices down for them so they don't make enough money to keep their operations running. They shutter some of the operation, lay off workers, and can't make enough to supply the Republic, let alone export. So they lose more money compared to what they were making, they fall back into the red, are sold off piece by piece, and gradually, lose whatever competitive edge that they had before when their manufacturing costs were underwritten by the Republic and could focus on making money and making things which were needed and used by the Republic.

So we would like to see those industries reopened as soon as possible, in the interest of our national security, and restored to public control. We would like to work with the Conservatives and The President to find a way to compromise on this.

HG: What other plans, besides restoring national industries, do you have?

GVW: We were handed the Defense Ministry as well. We will finally begin modernization of the Military, in line with national strategic doctrine. We now have three Partisan militias fully mobilized, and I have not heard an update on the Liberal Militia, but it is clear that The Parties are taking their role in the defense of the Nation seriously. Combined with a modernized Regular Force, we should be able to easily defend the Republic and once more restore our traditional role of Guarantor of the Anantonese Ocean. I'd also like to work with ODEN to expand the Cartel. We have already made some advances. Kalopia is ratifying the Treaty, and We expect that Telamon will do so as well now that Liberals have taken over up there. A stronger ODEN is beneficial to all Cartel Members. Finally, we would like to work with various Kalistani entrepreneurs to generate new private sector opportunities, well outside of the various sectors that can and should be returned to the public sector. This includes creation of more consumer goods as well as expansion of the service sector in Kalistan. Combined with strong worker protections, a vital service sector firmly in the hands of private owners can take up some of the slack in the job market created by the kneecapping of the NSP after privatization.

HG: Do you have any words for the Patriots, who were left out of the cabinet?

GVW: I instructed my negotiator to fight for Patriot inclusion in the cabinet. I think we could find common ground to work together on national defense and so forth. And I believe the national security aspect of the nationalizations would be fairly persuasive, if we can make concessions else where. We can still try to find ways to work together on moving some of the Patriots' Agenda, if they work with us on ours. Apparently, the unwillingness of the Patriots and the Conservatives to work together precluded their participation in the Government, but there is no reason that we can't reason with them.

HG: Thank you for these few moments, Comrade Premier.

GVW: I am always happy to talk to the Izquierda.

LDP keeps promise ! Heir’s waiting in the wings !

Loud noises of clapping were heard in the halls of the National Assembly as the proposal of the Liberal Democratic Party to remove the Corporation Tax was accepted with 208 MP’s voting for the proposal, this was a major victory for the LDP as the removal of the Tax was a major campaign promise in the last election cycle which the President wished to be passed since 4500. Although a minor partner of the Government Coalition the UKWF voted against the proposal, the rest of the Assembly including the socialist SPoK supported the legislation.

Image
LDP Members of Parliament clapping after the bill passed

As this political victory was celebrated by the Liberal camp,Questions have already begun arising for the future of the party, with President Ceaser declaring that he will retire in the end of his seventh mandate as President,Some members within the LDP have already begun speculations of who will take his place as Chairman and possibly the future LDP candidate for President,Some pundits see the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ethan Sawyer as the strongest candidate as he has been a front-runner in the LDP since 4498 and has been the Foreign Minister since the LDP gained power in 4500. Another possibility is the LDP Vice-President Micheal Wallace who is known to be one of the closest allies of the President. However the LDP has stressed that they are completely focused on continuing progress in the country and that the Primaries were not at all an issue at this point.

Kearney Elected Director
Kilani Immigrant Chosen to Lead the National Conservative Party
Image
Director Kearney Giving the Pledge of Patriotism at the NCP Headquarters in Kaliburg 30/9/4516

After months of delay, the National Conservative Party finally held a vote for the position of Director on the 25th of September. The race came to its final round the next day between Patrick Kearney, an immigrant from Kirlawa who has been a vocal member of the NCP since he arrived in Kalistan nineteen years ago, and Sandford Clemens, a long time NCP Junior Official. In the end, Kearney was the clear victor, winning 71.43% of the vote. Kearney was sworn in four days later on the 30th of September.

Kearney ran his campaign on assisting Presidential Candidate Narelle Ewart and NCP Minority Leader Keane Farrell continue the Conservative Blitz in order to retake the National Assembly. Kearney has already announced his plans to launch and fund a nation-wide campaign for Narelle Ewarts and other party candidates.

In his short time as Director, Kearney has been very active in making necessary changes. One of his most immediate actions was the reshuffling of party officials and ministerial candidates who he looked down on as "little corrupt rodents" and thought to have been the reason why the party had been doing so terribly in recent years. On the 3rd of October, Kearney had ordered FM. Douglas Montgomery, Marshal of the Conservative Army of Kalistan, to garrison Kaliburg with the Minutemen Battalion. The Minutemen were given a three word order, volunteer, assist, protect.

LDP Primaries are on the way !

As the final year of the President is approaching, the LDP has already begun thinking about the replacement of the 18-year long President and the 22-year long Chairman of the LDP Ceaser Furhat, the LDP plans on picking someone who can successfuly fulfill the position of Ceaser and add to it,but this is easier said then done as the legacy of Ceaser is a hard one to emulate. Candidates however are already making themselves known, for now there are two candidates who have officialy put forth their candidacy,Chris Damon is an LDP Deputy from Neveras, who is seen as a moderate within the LDP who has constantly pushed for more cooperation with the socialists and has been criticised for being more of a Social Democrat then a Classical Liberal. The other candidate is Edward Wayne, an LDP Council member who is quite the polar opposite, advocating mass privatisation and cooperation with the Patriotic League to reach economic goals with Social Concessions to the Patriots policies. Ofcourse these two candidates are not the two candidates the Liberals are expecting, the Foreign Minister Ethan Sawyer and LDP Vice-President Micheal Wallace are yet to confirm or deny their candidacy. Obviously these two would dominate the polls should they run but for now the backstage is split between the two and who to support should they run, however if the primaries would happen between Chris Damon and Edward Wayne, polls show that neither is favourable to the Liberals however still an “equal” amount of distain would result in a tight race.

Socialist Investors Organize National Defense Consortium
New Generation of Socialist Investors seek to reopen Privatized National Industries

Kaliburg, Ananto
October 8, 4517

Image
Delores DiVerdes, newly Elected Chairwoman of the National Defense Consortium

A new generation of Socialist Businessmen and women, who have come of age during the Privatization era, have organized to intervene in the economy. Known as the "Kalistani Group", this group of socialist investors who have made their money over the past decade by exploiting the ups and downs of Kalistani stocks, as well as international finance, have organized a new conglomerate known as the "National Defense Consortium."

"We have followed the example set in Valruzia of building a national defense corporation with the aim of plugging into a larger, northern Selayan group," said board Chairwoman Delores DiVerdes, of Lhasa, Neveras. "Our aim is to complete our purchase of the distressed assets of the former nationalized Industries, with the aim of reopening them and operating them under the same structure as under the Nationalization Edicts, and supplying the National Government with the raw materials and strategic resources that are necessary to modernize and operate our military and to provide our people with employment. If the Government shall not be moved to do so, we will do so without them."

The Kalistani Group has already purchased more than 90 percent of the assets of the former KalNaFerCo, and has reopened the iron mines in Neveras as well as one of the major foundries in Odufaray. Additionally, they have acquired 82% of the assets of the KalNaPeCo, including leases for exploration and drilling in the Ananto Strait. The Group has also purchased assets of the former KalNaTexCo and KalMilInCo. "We have been able to quietly buy up these properties as they were parted out by their capitalist owners. We have had to keep our activities quiet over the last decade, so as to acquire as much of this former national property as cheaply as possible. The most we have paid for any operation is estimated to be less than 10% of its value, which has allowed us to acquire much more of the property than if it had been sold at book value. The Consortium will hold these assets in trust and will begin opening them now as soon as possible."

The Kalistani Group said they intend to employ workers primarily from the National Service Program, which continues despite privatization. "We will pay workers from the NSP according to the military payscale. It is also our intention to continue to operate these assets and acquire more as we may, until such time that the Government sees fit to renationalize the property. At that time, we will seek only reimbursement for our costs of purchase."

Meanwhile, the National Defense Consortium shall also begin working with the Valruzian group and other Selayan defense groups to begin working on defense modernization. "We look primarily to the Seleyan Group for technology transfer. We can begin selling materials necessary to build national defense weaponry, as well as provide the fabrication plants to create new weaponry. We do not have the power to reopen the National Shipyards, as they remain properties of the Republican Government, but we will seek leases to use the Kalibug Shipyards to begin building new ships. In addition, we have begun the building of an aircraft plant to compliment the factories previously belonging to KalMilInCo, and with new designs, will begin supplying aircraft to the open market. It shall be our policy to always consider the needs of the Republic first, and we shall offer precedence to all Kalistani National Contracts, to be sold at cost to the Republic. Our profit and growth will come from overseas sales."

This development represents a degree of return to normalcy for the Republic following the incredibly disruptive privatization edicts passed by the Rightist Government nearly 10 years ago. The National Defense Consortium will operate as a publicly traded company, traded on the Kalsie under the stock symbol NDC. The founding members of the Consortium, representing 14 socialist-dominated companies, collectively control 96 percent of stock, with the remaining 4% being offered for public sale at an opening price of 32.45 KRB a share. Each of the 14 companies have each elected a single trustee, who shall be the single holder of their respective company's stake in the Consortium, and shall comprise the Board of Directors. No individual company may divest stock in the consortium without the affirmative vote of all of the other members of the board, and none of the Governing Articles of the Consortium may be altered without unanimous vote of the Board. Additionally, the Board will always have right of first refusal on all stock divestment which has been agreed upon by the board, and if any company represented by a Trustee should itself dissolve, the stock in the consortium is to be divided among the remaining members. Finally, Socialists must always be the Majority stakeholder in the Consortium, and the Director of the Board must always be a member of the Socialist Party of Kalistan.
