Foreign Affairs Minister Responds to Trigunian Action
Luca Curti says movement 'highlights that we are not the only nation infuriated by the Baltusians'
Kaliburg, Ananto
May 19, 4084

There was an element of shock last month when, following an extended period of heightened tensions between Kalistan and Baltusia, the Emperor of all Trigunia, Vladimir II ordered a Trigunian Squadron to enter the Baltusian controlled region of the Anantonese Ocean. According to the Emperor himself, the objective of the mission was to 'to spur on the talks between Baltusia and Kalistan', something that many in both nations will agree is desperately needed. Although there is no threat to Baltusia at the moment, the action may encourage their leaders to end meddling in Kalistan's affairs as they realise that there are tangible consequences to their actions.

Kalistan remains a nation in governmental limbo. The most recent elections now occurred almost 18 months ago yet the President has still not been able to form a cabinet, in spite of almost all parties stating they would work with her. Consequently, Luca Curti- leader of the Labour Party of Kalistan- has continued in his capacity as Foreign Affairs Minister. Whilst some Baltusian parties have attempted to undermine his authority, contacting the leader of the Kalistan Unionist Party instead of him when dealing with Kalistan, he says he will continue to serve as long as required. The Republic contacted him for an opinion on the Trigunian matter:

If nothing else, this unambiguously confirms what the majority in Kalistan had believed since this matter began: Baltusia is not to be trusted. It highlights that we are not the only nation infuriated by the Baltusians. That said, I want to be explicit in my censure of the action. However, perhaps now Baltusian provocateurs will consider their actions more cautiously. Our nations do not exist in an isolated bubble and when you insist on overstepping the boundaries of another nation's government, you set a perilous precedent.

Some suspect that the real reasoning behind the Emperor's decision was the impact the Baltusian crisis has had on relations with Trigunia. Despite signing a Treaty of Cooperation and Friendship, Trigunia and Kalistan have been unable to focus on strengthening their relationship due to the constant distraction of Kalistan's neighbours. They will hope that the latest movement will finally bring the matter to a close.

FLASH: Defense Minister White orders Regulars to Barracks, Al-Khali orders RSMoK to stand down
Kaliburg, Ananto District
August 1, 4084

In light of recent developments in the Baltusian Government, Defense Minister Gina White has ordered a general stand down of military exercises along the Kalistani-Baltusian border. Forces will begin returning to their Barracks within 24 Hours, and full redeployment to the rear should be completed within 72 hours.

Additionally, Premier Al-Khali has called RSMoK forces coordinating with the Regulars to stand down as well. "When the Regulars are not in the field, our joint exercises cannot go on. It does not make sense to keep these men and women away from their families any longer. We thank our Militia for their continued service to the Republic."

The decrease in tensions is already palpable, and the crisis, which brought Kalistan closer to war than it has been in 80 years finally appears to be headed toward resolution.

ASSAULT ON VRASSA CITY
Gunfire and explosions heard in the across the city overnight
Vrassa City, Vrassa
January 19, 4086

Image
A car burns after a bomb was detonated inside of it, near to the CIP headquarters

Kalistan was thrust into turmoil last night as explosions and gunfire were heard in Vrassa City, just days after the general and presidential elections were held. According to multiple reports, several devices were detonated in multiple locations around the city. They include two outside the Conservative Independence Party headquarters and one near to the Vrassa District Assembly. Shortly afterwards, an individual entered through the back of the Conservative headquarters building and proceeded to open fire indiscriminately with a fully-automatic machine gun. Six people have been confirmed as dead, with dozens injured and as many as three hundred reported as unaccounted for.

Outgoing President of the Republic, Gwen Monchalette, was notified and quickly issued a statement on the attack;
A dreadful thing has happened tonight. Something awful. Kalistan, a nation in which we feel so secure has been attacked by an unknown group. I can verify reports that six people have passed away, with many more injured. Some minor damage has been inflicted on the exterior of the District Assembly and the party headquarters will be temporarily relocated to a separate location downtown. My heart truly goes out to all those affected.

She is expected to give another speech at a memorial later.

The shooter was shot on the scene by a special forces team, dispatched when a call was made by a CIP party member within the building. An investigation has begun into who the attacker(s) were, with some sources alleging there were links between the man and senior officials within the Conservative Independence Party. There have been continued suggestions from those within and outside the party, that the far-right faction had grown increasingly militant in recent times, partly due to the moderate line taken by Mrs. Monchalette. The attack also comes just days after the CIP suffered a crushing defeat in the National Assembly elections, ending up with the joint lowest number of seats, just 89. Vrassa had previously been a Conservative Independence Party stronghold, in a time when they were returning over a third of all the Assembly Deputies. Whether this influenced the attackers is unknown.

The Republic asks all readers to remain sceptical of all claims in the immediate aftermath of this tragedy. All accounts are completely unconfirmed at this time and very little conclusive evidence is available .

President Jones Reacts to unrest in Vrassa City
Calls violence "unconscionable"

Vrassa City
February 4, 4086

Image
President Michal Jones-Terrance, delivering remarks following visit to site of Vrassan violence last week

The President of the Republic, Michal Jones-Torence toured the scene of violent terrorist in Vrassa City. Charred marks remained on the pavement as the President was briefed by local security units in the area. Following his tour of the site, the President removed to a local auditorium and delivered these remarks:

"We accept the results of the investigation being conducted as a result of this senseless violence which has struck one of our great Northern Cities. The loss of life, and less significantly the destruction of property, are unconscionable. We bear their memories in our heart, and grieve as a nation for their deaths. We will not, however, allow such acts of violence to go unanswered. We have asked the Vrassan District Government to devote additional funds to terror mitigation and request the cooperation of all government Parties in this District in stepping up efforts to prevent domestic terrorists from launching such attacks on peaceful and political targets.

"We said, just then, that the perpetrators of this violence were domestic. We have taken the investigators' summary under advisement and we agree with them that the culprits themselves were local actors, who possibly felt they were being marginalized out of the Conservative Party. While our commitment remains to the free practice of liberty in Kalistan, for some reason or another, these individuals felt that they were not being heard. This feeling leads naturally to desperation and radicalization. What mitigation within the CP looks like is fully up to them, but I would assert that succumbing to the radical right is not a solution which We would endorse specifically. The Government of Kalistan should commit, instead to offering the CP whatever support their require to rooting out these fascists within their ranks and making it so they can cause no more destruction to the Party or to the people of this Nation.

"We should be unwilling to settle for a situation where such people may strike with impunity. Nor should we accept an increased security state. I am confident that the Government of Kalistan will take necessary steps without limiting the liberty of free people."

The President's message was followed by a short question and answer session, though he refused to respond to questions not germane to the Vrassan episode.

Public Response to President Jones:

Many in attendance felt that the President's fist major address lacked much sentiment or emotion, but he seemed to answer questions directly and completely. Said one listener: "He seemed like he was an academic, a lot smarter than all of us, but at the expense of the sort of warmth we were expecting. He struck me as a technocrat..."

Said another, "His Vrassan accent was nice to hear in a President, but he just sounded like an elite academic, like a philosopher. I would have preferred to hear from (former Premier) Omar (Al-Khali) or the Premier now..."

And a woman in attendance stated: "It was alright, I guess... kind of flat, I suppose... He seems like a nice enough chap..."

One child said simply: "Meh- I have heard better speeches from my father. That guy was the President, you say? I bet my father could beat him up..."

Aslan Encourages Trigunian-Indralan Settlement
Kalistani Foreign Affairs Minister offers a statement in response to the recent heightened tensions between the two great powers
Kaliburg, Ananto
June 22, 4086

Following a recent disagreement between the governing parties in Indrala and Trigunia, both nations with which Kalistan maintains positive relations, the new Foreign Affairs Minister of Kalistan Serhat Aslan has urged both sides to reach an agreement peacefully. Aslan was speaking at a summit in Kaliburg, held by the Foreign Office, to which both the Indralan and Trigunian ambassadors were invited. The period of quandary is a lasting effect of the similarly strained relations between Baltusia and Kalistan when Trigunia took the unilateral decision to urge decision-makers to act by moving ships through the Anantonese Ocean and into Baltusian waters. Whilst it did force both nations to accept an agreement, the action was condemned across Terra, chiefly by Indrala. Aslan called for a measured response, saying:

Kalistan finds itself in a progressively more intractable predicament. We are repeatedly hearing that two of our closest friends, the Celestial Empire of Great Indrala and the Trigunian Empire, are being drawn into actions which pose a risk to one another. Obviously, this profoundly upsets us. We do understand, of course, that is simply idealistic to propose that all of Kalistan's partners should get along perfectly. However, I am calling upon both sides in this situation to pause and consider their actions. Neither side can be clearly blamed because we believe both have acted with good intentions, perhaps to their rival they may have seemed self-serving, but we must consider these matters on a grander scale. Kalistan has a great affinity towards our Seleyan brothers and we would not want to see them hurt but we respect the contribution Trigunia makes to our country too, particularly economically. Surely both sides can see that war, whether a war of battleships or a war of words, helps nobody?

Serhat Aslan took on the role of Foreign Affairs Minister in the January 4086 Cabinet. He replaces Luca Curti, who had been acting in his place whilst he attended de-escalation talks.

Kalistani President calls for Naval Operations in Anantanese Ocean
Seen as response to "impunity" of Imperial powers

Kaliburg, Ananto District
October 12, 4086

Image
President of the Republic Michal Jones-Terrance speaks to Kalistani audiences about the Anantanese Ocean

President of the Republic Michal Jones-Terrance issued a strongly worded call to the Government of Kalistan to begin naval exercises in the Anantanese Ocean. Below are his brief comments.

"Comrades, recently, our international affairs experienced the sort of intervention that weaker powers must put up with on a regular basis, as the Empire of Trigunia sailed its fleet through Kalistani Waters and into Baltusian waters, without our invitation and without anyone's permission. Then we read in the Indralan papers that the Black Tortoise Fleet, our old nemesis, the very same fleet which bombarded our capital city into ruins not more than 100 years ago, has taken to sailing through the Anantanese Ocean, ostensibly looking for Pirates, but in reality, as a message to everyone that it remains a genuine threat to all nations along the old Jade Route.

"This impunity must be checked. Therefore, today I have asked the Minister of Defense to begin naval exercises in the Anantanese Ocean. These exercises will send a message that the Anantanese Ocean is not simply a playground for the imperial powers of the world, but that every time a foreign fleet sails through them it puts Kalistani security at risk. We mustn't stand for the cavalier attitude our more powerful neighbors have for Kalistani Security. We should have the right to insist on some courtesy within our own waters. Kalistan has claimed influence over and the right to have a say on the exercises of foreign nations within the Anantanese Ocean for more than a century. These are not free and open seas. Not where our security is concerned.

"It is our hope that the great empires of the world take heed, and show some damned courtesy when they are putting the safety of our people and the security of our Republic at risk whenever they decide it is time to flex their muscles. Kalistan is the guarantor of peace and security in the Anantanese Ocean, and others may not walk over our interests there without care, lest they get a sharp nail in the arch of their foot."

ATTROCITIES CONTINUE
Conservatives suspend six district deputies from the party as two CIP Youth members are found dead
Vrassa City, Vrassa
January 15, 4087

Almost a year since the horrific attacks on Vrassa City, the CIP has been forced to suspend six members of the Vrassa District Assembly pending an investigation of the deaths of two Conservative Independence Party: Youth members. Those charged cannot be named for legal reasons but they are believed to have been found stockpiling suspicious items including fully-automatic firearms and the materials required to create low-budget explosives. A spokeswoman for the CIP provided a brief statement:

We can confirm rumours that six CIP officials, all members of the Vrassa District Assembly, have been suspended from the party pending further investigation. The individuals in question had shown no prior evidence of mental health problems or even petty criminality. Information has been provided to the relevant authorities and we will do whatever we can to cooperate with them. We have reason to believe they were connected to the deaths of two CIP Youth members earlier this week. Rest assured we are taking steps to ensure that other fascists and terrorists are rooted out and dealt with before they spread their poison through the party.

The expulsions follow the believed murder of two members of the Conservative's youth affiliate who were killed in their shared flat in inner Vrassa City earlier in the week. The group behind the murders and the previous attacks in Vrassa have recently announced themselves as 'The New Army of Kalistan'. Operating primarily on hard to track social media websites, the group states they want to return Kalistani to Kali citizens and re-establish the royal family with Andoni Victor Reynolds-Ananto, descentant of Emperor Isadoro XVI, as the true Emperor of Kalistan. How this group has entangled itself within the CIP is relatively unclear but it is certain that they will face increasing pressure to distance themselves from them. Meanwhile, Kalistan faces a terrorism crisis.

The People's Press
CURTI RETIRES
Long-serving Labour Party leader announces he will stand down at the end of his term as Premier
Kaliburg, Ananto
January 6th, 4090

Image
Luca Curti is photographed as he prepares to return to the office of Premier

Tonight, at the climax of the annual Labour Party conference, Luca Curti has said he will stand down as leader of the party following the national elections in two years time. During a speech marking the of the end event, he said he would be retiring from his current high-profile role but that he would not be disappearing just yet, an excerpt of the speech can be found below;

Firstly, it should be evident that this is not a decision which has been made in haste, I have spent a lengthy period of time considering my position as leader prior to reaching this conclusion. With that said, I couldn't possibly overstate how much I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this job. It has been a humbling and remarkable experience to lead Kalistan's Labour movement for over 30 years. Every day I met new, unique and astounding individuals who were committed to our cause.

The Labour Party has evolved a considerable amount under my stewardship and I am proud of that. Before we were a pressure group with good intentions but lacking the unity and decisiveness to change Kalistan for the better, now we are the mouthpiece of the working class, committed to ensuring a robust public sector, fair working conditions and providing a society where everybody can maximise their potential. More than anything, we believe that people should expect to attain their aspirations.

Unfortunately, I am now a seventy-eight-year-old and sooner or later I will be obliged to accept that I can no longer lead this movement to its full capability. In my view, it is certainly preferable that I set my own terms for departure and that is what I intend to do. In the interim, I will continue to lead the Labour Party and the government wholeheartedly and I will work with my successor however I can. It should be obvious that their job will not be simple, the right remains a force even today, but they have a tremendous opportunity. Together, we will keep the red flag flying in Kalistan!

Curti's decision brings down the curtain on a truly remarkable career which has seen him serve as Premier, President, Internal Affairs Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister in addition to his roles as Labour Leader and, briefly, Deputy Leader. He swept to victory following a motion of no confidence in the incumbent leader James Harrison, primarily due to his charismatic and uplifting speaking style and positive left wing platform. His early leadership was defined by several changes to the party's constitution including a change of name from the Kalistani Free People's Movement to the Labour Party of Kalistan, the creation of a party militia and direct elections to the National Executive Committee. Personally, he has been hugely influential in Kalistani society, particularly during his time as Foreign Minister during which he oversaw a resolution to the Baltusian crisis and the signing of several international treaties, like the Kalistan-Trigunia Treaty of Cooperation and Friendship and the North Seleyan Economic Community.

Image
Luca Curti speaks at a graduation event at the University of Sulari

Speculation is already mounting about who will succeed Curti, with the current favourites believed to be Foreign Minister Serhat Aslan and former Deputy Leader Francesca Totti although a diverse range of candidates have hinted at running. Former Party Chair James Harrison has urged unity, though, saying 'it is important for not just the Labour Party, but for Kalistan as a whole, that even if we are a broad church, we keep singing from the same hymn sheet'. Whether Curti's replacement can live up to his mammoth legacy remains to be seen but one thing is for sure, a Labour Party without the kind-hearted, soft-spoken Luca Curti is an alien proposition...

Socialist Party to Host 73rd GanJam

Las Hermanas de la Mota named as Show Closers; Angst Experience to Headline L Night

Dahreil, Ananto
March 17, 4090

"Message, Music and Marijuana" is the chosen theme of this year's GanJam in Ananto. The 4 day music festival this year returns with a distinctly political overtone which hasn't really been stressed since the days of single Party rule in Kalistan. But the Socialist Party, the sponsors of the inaugural GanJam music festival are back in the hosting seat. Party Speaker and former Premier of the Republic Omar al-Khali said of the Party's return to hosting duties: "With Kalistani politics so clogged right now, and everyone basically having the same number of seats and everything, we figure this is a way we can get back to our roots. Of course, the SP supports the Ganjam, and we support the Delta and the Crop, and we want to make this year's festival better than ever."

Image
Las Hermanas de la Mota at their New Years Bash show in Kaliburg in January, now confirmed Show Closers for the GanJam

Al-Khali and former President Michal Jones are both expected to speak at the festival. It is assumed that the Party reps will make a stronger push for a renewed and restored ODEN cartel at the festival, though at this point their plans for the show are unconfirmed. Meanwhile, the Party has committed to buying more than 3,000 bales of Dahreil's crop for free distribution at the GanJam, making it the biggest single distributor of marijuana in Kalistan during the 4 day event. Al-Khali said each quarter pound will come with pro-ODEN propaganda from the Party. The planning committee has issued a monopoly on marijuana distribution to the SP for the event, due to their sponsorship, though private sales of less than 1 ounce will be permitted on the campus.

Image
Concert attendees at last year's GanJam smoked a record 206,348 pounds of marijuana, or just over 3.25 ounces per attendee

The confirmed mainstage lineup for the Ganjam includes headliners Las Hermanas de la Mota, the incredibly popular mathrock quartet from Eshar, as well as Fright, The Partisans, The Amy Bishop Band, the trance duo Octitwins, Cleaver Weed and the Humors, Dumb Orchid, the Triphop quartet from Neveras Angst Experience (Who is scheduled to headline L Night), and Mark French and Donna Blue. Each band will play full sets in primetime, while throughout the day, local music and lesser known indie bands will be featured. There will also be a "Legends" Showcase on Stage 3 throughout the event which will have music preferred by older patrons. On the bands, Al-Khali seemed thrilled: "We were thrilled that Las Hermanas decided to come play at the Jam. This was a real coup for us- at first they said it was impossible, due to contract things. They would be overseas that entire week. But they were able to postpone the shows so they could play on the 4th Night as the show closer. Right now they are the baddest MF-ing band in Kalistan and we are just so happy that they could do the show." He also had great words to say about the other headliners. The former Premier was especially excited about the Partisans and the Angst Experience. "The things they do with the sequencers and live orchestras... mind blowing for sure."

Image
Mainstage headliners Angst Experience will play on "L Night"

This year's jam is expected to attract more than one million people from all around Kalistan, and increased attendance from overseas is also expected. Dahreil, a frequent host of the GanJam says their event team is prepared with food, housing, medical support and any amenity that concert goers could possibly want. ODEN will also be on hand with a smorgasbord of chemicals for concert goers. Al-Khali added, "I don't think ODEN will be supplying hard drugs this year. We're trying to focus on the Dah Delta Crop this year, so we've asked them to leave off on the heroin and the coke. I understand psychotropics are, however on the menus, and I suppose raw opium will also be available. ODEN said they will be making acid available specifically on L Night."

The festival should be a tremendous success, and Al-Khali states that the Party is thrilled to be back on hosting duties. Tickets are being sold currently by vendors for less than 65 Rubles for all four days, though concert goers are reminded, as in years past, the cost for food and lodging will only be partially offset for the first two days. The last two days, both will be fully free. But, as in years past, sponsor-provided lodging will be open dorms, rather than individual rooms, so event attendees should plan accordingly.

Former President Jones-Terrence to move into Foreign Affairs Slot
Replaces retiring Marcus Kirk as shadow minister

Kaliburg, Ananto
March 30, 4090

Image
Former President Jones-Terrance to be named Shadow Foreign Minister by the SP, replacing outgoing Marcus Kirk

Rather than stand for re-election following his failed re-election bid, the SP has accepted the retirement of Shadow Foreign Minister Kirk, and has named former President Jones as his replacement. Jones served only one term as President of the Republic, being beaten by first the Conservative and then the Libertarian Parties. The President's term was marked by a formal resolution of tensions with Baltusia, a brief spat over sovereignty in the Anantanese Ocean with Indrala, and a Constitutional Court case which has yet to be formally resolved, due to an unwillingness of the Lawyers for the Respondent to issue a comment before the court. Essentially Jones faced no crises during his brief tenure in office, and it is clear that politics in Kalistan are settling down finally, after an exceedingly long period of ideological rancor.

In taking up the Shadow Cabinet seat, Jones marks the return to dominance of the internationalist Position within the Socialist Party. Together with Party leader Omar Al-Khali, the SP's leadership is now primarily drawn from a strongly nationalist well, one who is not afraid to push Kalistani interests abroad, and demand respect for Kalistani institutions at home. There are hints which are being slowly leaked to the Press that the SP intends to push for Jones-Terrance to be named foreign minister in exchange for not contesting in the next election, but these reports have not been confirmed by SP spokespeople at press time.
