Field Marshall Andrade hurriedly made his way up the long marble staircase dodging and weaving past secretaries, bureaucrats and other civil servants. Upon reaching the very top he halted to look in a mirror in the hall adjacent to the office of the Defence Minister, Miguel Horacio. The exertion of walking a flight of stairs was making him sweat profusely, so he pulled out a handkerchief and wiped his brow. An aide to the Defence Minister spotted him from across the hall and scampered over carrying a document. He handed the piece of paper - his hands twitching nervously - to the Field Marshall without a word, and then scurried off further down the hall. Andrade quickly glanced at the document before folding it up neatly and placing it in his breast pocket. He then cleared his throat and walked towards the office of the Defence Minister, hesitating as he reached for the handle. Before he could even touch it the door flew open as if a tornado was passing through, and another aide breezed past him and down the hall. The Defence Minister looked up from his desk for a split second and saw Andrade standing in the middle of the door way, with a puzzled look on his face.

"Field Marshall! You made it!" Andrade looked over as the Defence Minister rose from his desk, clumsily sending pieces of paper flying around him, causing several aides to dive around the floor to recover them.

"Come in." The Field Marshall walked briskly into the room and stood rigidly beside the desk. He shook hands with the Defence Minister Horacio, who then motioned for him to take a seat.

"Well then Field Marshall, what shall it be?" The minister raised his eyebrows expectedly.

"The military agrees in principle to work with the RAFC to combat the PMU terrorists, however...." The minister raised his hand to cut him off.

"I know, I know. You want full control over operations and you don't want the RAFC running around and causing untold mayhem. That is understandable, and I promise you that the RAFC will be subordinate to the Armed Forces and will follow the orders you give them. Satisfied?"

"Very much so." The Minister walked over to the window behind his desk, which overlooked the city centre, and gazed at the troops forming up.

"Field Marshall. How soon can you have your men ready to go?"

"As soon as I give the order." The Minister turned with a smooth motion away from the window and toward the Field Marshall. He then walked over to his desk, picked up his phone and handed it to Andrade.

"Then give."

Deep in the jungles of Domale
December 2779

Lieutenant Scutaro peered through his binoculars at the PMU camp directly to the front of his platoon. His men, covered in camouflage face paint and their jungle uniforms sunk into the ground as best they could, and maintained strict silence. The PMU hadn't set up much of a defensive perimeter - a few sentries here and there - and there couldn't have been more than a company sized unit stationed here. Inside the camp were piles of semtex, rifles, rocket launchers and various cases - presumably ammunition and medical supplies - but no heavy equipment in sight. Lt. Scutaro put down his binoculars and radioed call sign 'Libertad'.

"Fire mission. High explosive rounds, suppressive fire at grid reference 43021." His radio crackled as the message transmitted.

"Message received, over." The monotone voice replied absently. "Loading rounds." Lt. Scutaro re-equipped his binoculars and watched as the PMU militias within the camp began to grab equipment and gather around an officer.

"Rounds loaded. Firing for effect, over." Scutaro motioned to his squad leaders to get into position.

"Rounds fired, over." Scutaro waited expectantly and after a few seconds he heard the incoming rounds, watching as several PMU militias looked with puzzlement toward the sky. Huge explosions erupted in the centre of the camp, sending bodies, limbs and equipment flying in all directions. When the explosions ceased, Scutaro stood upright and rushed forward whilst signalling to his squad leaders. The entire platoon moved forward with haste, weapons at the ready. The sentries outside the camp stumbled into the onrushing platoon and were cut down with ease, their figures silhouetted against the horizon made for an easy target. Reaching the camp, the platoon split in several directions, exchanging small arms fire with any survivors, and finishing off those too far gone for medical treatment. Lt. Scutaro headed toward the very centre of the camp and halted as several PMU members stood with their hands up in surrender.

"Get down! Hands behind your heads!" Scutaro motioned by pointing his rifle at the troops and then towards the ground, which drew immediate compliance.

"Area clear." Scutaro radioed back to company HQ. All over the country similar engagements were taking place and Scutaro knew there would be more camps and strongholds of the PMU to clear.

Outside the PMU HQ, Domale
December 2779

Corporal Wainwright crouched down and pressed hard against the wall as bullets whizzed nearby, occasionally striking the wall and sending chips of concrete flying past him. The tall and imposing figure of Sergeant Kurichenko stood behind him, urging him to move forward just by his sheer presence. Wainwright was in no mood to hurry however, as a PMU heavy machine gun nest was lacing fire throughout the courtyard. He could now feel the eyes of Sgt. Kurichenko burning into the back of his head, as he watched a tank lumber slowly forward across the street. It came to halt midway across the road and began firing high explosive rounds at the building. This caused the heavy machine gun to fall silent for a moment or two, and the tank lurched forward once more, coming to within ten feet of the building when an RPG round slammed down on top off it, bouncing off. A close shave for the men inside the steel coffin, but the PMU defenders were not finished as a few slabs of semtex dropped from a window onto the hull. The detonation created a ringing explosion that sent the Corporal and Kurichenko flying onto their behinds.

"Ok. Enough of this bullshit!" Thundered Kurichenko as he pulled the pin on a smoke grenade and lobbed it into the courtyard, before taking off on a mad gallop. Wainwright stumbled up and followed as best he could until he reached the very thickest part of the smoke, and then blinded he tripped and fell into something. As the smoke began to clear he realised he was now in the very machine gun nest that had preoccupied him earlier. The PMU troops inside looked at him with a mixture of astonishment and amusement. Before any of them could react however a loud burst of fire came toward them, causing the PMU troops to rock with convulsions as blood and pieces of their skulls flew into the Corporals lap. As Wainwright wiped some blood from his cheek the barrel of an assault rifle peeked through the camo netting, and as the smoke cleared further Wainwright locked eyes with Sergeant Kurichenko.

"Get up."

Operation Fastball
Situation Report

To: Defence Minister
February 2779

Since the outbreak of hostilities between the Coburan Armed Forces and the PMU militia, progress has been both swift and decisive. Our early success is due in part to the great preparation work undertaken by the Special Forces in locating important PMU camps and supply depots. We took the PMU by surprise, dealt them some heavy blows and now they are on the ropes flailing aimlessly. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cobura have also contributed to our victories, securing key points and performing excellent propaganda work - drawing countless PMU militias to desert. In the following report I highlight the progress made on a region by region basis.

Irkawa

The PMU presence in Irkawa was sizable, with the bulk of their concentration located in the mountains to the north, and some smaller groups in the jungle areas to the south. The reasons for this deployment is due to the newly built RAFC camps in the southern jungles of Irkawa, as the PMU wished to avoid any confrontation with (what was at the time) their common allies. Operations in the area went well, with around half of the PMU camps being destroyed, mostly the southern ones. In the cities, some local RAFC troops worked alongside the CAF units deployed to capture the local offices of the PMU.

Egato

The PMU had only a small deployment within Egato, and as such only a small force was sent to engage them. Fighting has been sporadic in this sector, with small scale battles between the RAFC and the PMU taking place. The RAFC has a relatively strong presence in the area but likely doesn't have the means to pin down the smaller PMU force.

Domale and Dilganato

Both provinces have seen something of a stalemate. While initial casualty figures for the PMU have not been good, they have been able to withdraw the bulk of their forces in good order into excellent defensive positions. The RAFC has made some small gains, but the CAF is doing the majority of the work, eliminating PMU camps with a methodical rhythm. It is expected that this will constitute the main area of operations for the rest of the campaign, and accordingly High Command is deploying new units there with each passing day.

Tokundi

Tokundi has seen very little action and we don't expect the area to play a big part in future operations. Only small PMU camps exist within the area and these can be adequately handled by the inital deployment of troops.

Casualty Figures

PMU
Killed - 11,685
Wounded - 3,201
Captured - 4,484

CAF
Killed - 512
Wounded - 4,356
Captured - 400 (est.)

RAFC
Killed - 4,229
Wounded - 2,350
Captured - 100 (est.)

Field Marshall Diego Andrade
Coburan Chief of Staff

OOC: Casualty figures have been based on election results and the relative size of each force. The CAF have a low killed number because they are a professional force with vast resources and thus more of their casualties end up as 'wounded' rather than 'killed'.

'Operation Curveball' Briefing
September 2780

Image

General Guzman cleared his throat a few times and shuffled his papers nervously as the Chiefs of Staff and other high ranking Generals took their seats. When the noise of their idle chatter had died down and they began to stare expectantly at him he began his briefing.

"Gentlemen, I am here to present you with the proposed plans for 'Operation Curveball'. The op..."

"Excuse me, General." Field Marshall Guggenheim interrupted. "But do we really need to name every fucking operation after some baseball reference?"

"Its...just a name." Guzman was taken aback by the Field Marshall's outburst.

"Maybe we could agree on a more pertinent name right now." Added Field Marshall Andrade, the Chief of Staff.

"What about 'Rose Petal'?" Suggested a General in the back row Guzman didn't recognise.

"Rose Petal? How in the name of Boh is that an appropriate name for a military operation?" Retorted someone else.

"Boh? What are you, some kind of Deltarian sympathiser? A Tokundi pig fucker?" Suddenly the entire room erupted into shouting, insults and pointed fingers. After a few minutes General Guzman had enough.

"SILENCE!" The bickering Generals calmed down and returned to their seats.

"Now. The Operation will take place throughout Cobura and will involve the immediate deployment of all active units of the Army. The Air Force and the Navy will have secondary roles to play, but I want to concentrate on the Army for the purposes of this meeting." Guzman walked over to a whiteboard upon which he had divided the Army into various sectors. "As you can see the Army will be split into five, one for each province. These units are tasked with taking and holding all - and I mean ALL - suitable defence terrain within each province. If the PMU already holds good defensive terrain then we will take it from them. The purpose of this gentleman is to deny them the means to wage an effective guerilla war. By flooding the countryside and giving them little space to breathe, not to mention no good spots to place their camps, we will force them into action. Either they can retreat, fight, or surrender. If they retreat, then they will be cut down as they will be in the open. If they fight, they will be cut down as we would hold all the best defensive terrain. If they surrender, then we can all go home." Field Marshall Andrade raised his hand.

"Yes?"

"This is a large undertaking. Do you believe we have enough manpower to cover all that ground?"

"I am confident we can do so. If we need more troops then we will address that issue when we come to it."

"Very well. I approve of your preliminary plans. Its time for lunch." Field Marshall Andrade briskly stood up and glided out of the room, and was then followed by the rest of the high command.
