The Red Emergency - Hutori Civil War

OOC: This is the thread for the 'Red Emergency', a civil war in Hutori sparked off by Communist insurgency. Here is the post that initiated the conflict:

Election results greeted by violence as Communists declare election 'phoney'

In the aftermath of this month's polls, controversial amongst the Communist Party especially for their being called so soon, the attacks which have terrified Hutori for a past few years have been stepped up to unprecedented levels. Earlier today Bekenial itself was rocked by a car bomb attack right next to the Presidential Compound. Though only a few passing civilians were hurt, the attack demonstrates that the militants are able to strike anywhere, and nobody is safe from the violence. Also certain regions of Falristan are now seeing extensive guerilla activity. The town of Corktown has been practically occupied by Communist forces, though a military response is surely on its way.

In a statement, Phillipa Geld (a member of the Communist Central Committee) condemned the election result and applauded the militants as 'revolutionaries':

Earlier this month the capitalists showed their true colours. They stuffed ballot boxes, they beat up decent communists as they walked to ballot stations, they threatened children that they would be taken away from their parents if they voted Communist. The reactionary centre-left did all it could to destroy our party and give themselves seats in parliament.

But the voice of the people cannot be silenced. Since the election more glorious martyrs and revolutionaries have came forth, punishing these capitalists for their treachery to the great nation of Hutori. Citizens have risen up in Falristan, where the electoral fraud was greatest and our party denied their greatest share of the vote. Corktown is now a glorious Socialist Republic, vanguard of the revolution and front line in the war against the capitalists.

Now we Communists have decided to reject this sham parliament and its phoney elections. No longer will we hide it, we are actively part of the revolution and our members will be directing the militants as they make their attacks. Parliamentary means have failed, now it is time for us to man the barricades and rebel against these half capitalists that threaten socialism in Hutori. Social Democracy is a lie, a lie that protects capitalism and prevents real reform of the system.

Our response to these liars is simple. We will have Socialism or death. There can be no compromise. Workers of Hutori unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains!

It appears these are dark times for Hutori. It is likely the military crackdown will be vigorous, but it will also make things official. Hutori is now in the midst of a bloody civil war.

AIR CRASH DISASTER- PM BAINES "SERIOUSLY INJURED"

APRIL 3233

Today Hutori stood in a state of shock, as the Prime Minister Eugene Baines was rushed to hospital with "serious injuries" following aN air crash on the Hutori mainland. The private plane, which was heading for the Isle of Sutton, contained the Prime Minister and the FHP chairman Jack Dole (pictured), and is believed to have been shot down in a rocket attack whilst flying low over Roccato. The pilot was able to skillfully sterr the plane onto open ground but was unable to stop the vehicle crashing.

It is believed the Dole suffered only minor injuries, and hopes to leave hospital soon, but more news surrounding the condition of the Prime Minister is still unknown. There are rumours that Baine's injuries were very severe, as soldiers who swiftly came to the scene demanded that all cameras were switched off and everyone was taken to a safe distance away.

It is still not yet known who will form the next coalition government given the results following the March election. For now, Baines is still the incumbent Prime Minister as part of the FHP-Liberal coalition.

EUGENE BAINES DIES

April 3233

3182-3233
The Prime Minister died peacefully in hospital following his fatal injuries in an air crash 4 days ago

Today the people of Hutori began mourning the loss of their Prime Minister Eugene Baines, who tragically died following a terrorist attack on a government plane that he was travelling in.

Baines was born on 1 August 3182 in Constantine, Lagard. After studying law at Aylesbury University he went on to serve as a government lawyer, until eventually becoming an MP in 3223. Eugene was well liked in party circles for his calm and humorous demeanour which won over his critics. In 3229 Baines only just held onto his seat, but was nonetheless elected leader of the FHP following the disastrous election result where then leader Tony Upson lost his seat. Baines would be the first FHP leader to become leader of the opposition, and he strongly opposed the then Socialist-SDP coalition government. In 3230 the FHP did dramatically well in the general election, thanks in part to the departure of the HCP and HMP parties. It was 3231 that the FHP entered into its second government, this time with the Liberal party. He was Prime Minister during a tough political time, especially given the troubles caused in part by radical left wing extremists which began the civil war.

Eugene Baines will undoubtedly be remembered as a moderate politician who was almost inevitably radicalised by the times he was in. His patriotic love of Hutori, and his desire to defend it from extremism and violence, meant his democratic views often had to be put to one side.

He is survived by his wife Simone and their daughter Julia.

VICTORIA MERTON IS ELECTED NEW FHP LEADER

May 3233
Image
Merton, a noted right winger and a protégée of former leader Tony Upson, is likely to radicalise the party

Following the death of former Prime Minister Eugene Baines the FHP has elected deputy leader Vicky Merton as its first ever female leader. Merton, a notable right winger in the party, had previously claimed that the current troubles in Hutori were a sign of our "moral decline". She is undoubtedly a polarising figure, much unlike her predecessor.

Merton won the leadership in a relatively close election against Wayne Appleman and Julie Ridley, both relative new comers having only become MPs in 3230.

The result of the leadership election was as follows:

Turnout: of the 761,938 party members, 604 979 voted, a turnout of 79.4%

Vicky Merton 261 351 (43.2%)
Wayne Appleman 212 953 (35.2%)
Julie Ridley 130 675 (21.6%)

Vicky Merton is duly elected leader of the Forward Hutori party

As Merton stood down as deputy leader, an election for that position was also held. Carlton Froch MP was duly elected unapposed.

HUTORI'S GOVERNMENT IN CHAOS

JANUARY 3234
Image
President Bloom has been left in control of Hutori as a coalition government is yet to be formed as troubles continue

Despite the general election result paving the way for a potential coalition government between the SDP and the Liberals, there is still no news of whether both parties have even met for talks. This has left the new and arguably inexperienced President Bloom to control government matters as the civil war continues. Bloom has been praised by media columnists and journalists at home and abroad for her "steady" and "calm" leadership over the last few months.

The Forward Hutori party pulled out of the last government in early 3233, following the death of it's leader Prime Minister Eugene Baines. Vicky Merton has told the dispatch that the country needs a strong and united government in the face of the troubles, and that if necessary, the FHP is willing to "go it alone" to ensure the President has the support she needs.
