PRO DEMOCRACY DEMONSTRATIONS ERUPT ACROSS KANJOR

In major cities and towns across the nation people have taken to the streets, in sometimes violent demonstrations, against the current radical nationalist government. The demonstrators made up of trade unionists, students, middle class radicals and others accused the Nationalist government of systematically violating the liberties of the citizens of Kanjor with mass repression, curfews, government mandated racial discrimination and public executions of political opponents. Instead they demand a return to a society based on civil liberties and immeadiate democratic elections to challenge the Nationalist government.

Henri Moreau, leader of the Movement for a Citizen's Republic and a key figure in the largest demonstrations in the capital Soulon, has said demonstrators will defy the curfew policies to occupy the streets until democratic rights are restored. Unless the demonstrators disperse by the evening violent clashes with the police and military are likely. As evening draws in protestors are showing no signs of going home, setting up tents, waving flags and singing Republican songs.

The Minister of Defence has downplayed the significence of the demonstrations but has said the army is ready to defend the government if necessary. He has said that unless the crowds disperse by curfew he will give the order to use live rounds.

One factor that has helped to galvinise protest and weaken the Nationalist regime is the fact that the Grand Commandeur Tristan Bourbeau has not been seen in person in over six months and rumours persist that he has been dead for some time.

SHOTS FIRED IN SOULON. HENRI MOREAU ARRESTED

At 11pm this evening the Nationalist government ordered troops to move in on demonstrators in the capital. Tear gas cannisters were fired into the crowd before shots were fired killing four demonstrators. This caused protestors to attempt to rush the government troops and hand to hand fighting soon broke out killing and injuring demonstrators as well as government troops. Emmanuel Gueguen ordered Nationalist troops to pull back at 11:34pm.

Peace was however only restored for a few hours since, just after 1am, Nationalist troops once again attempted to push their way through the crowd to arrest Henri Moreau. Moreau was cuffed and taken away by Nationalist troops. Raising both his hands in fists while still wearing the handcuffs Mr. Moreau shouted "Long Live the Revolution! Long Live the Citizens!!" as he was taken away.

Despite Mr. Moreau's arrest demonstrators have not dispersed and the standoff with government troops continues.

ELECTIONS AGREED, MOREAU RELEASED

After two weeks of tense standoff between pro-democracy demonstrators and the security services the Nationalist government has agreed to stage elections in one months time.

Alexandrine Chevalier, a trade union official who had taken over the leadership of the Soulon demonstration after Henri Moreau's arrest, announced the news to tired demonstrators in front of the Grand Sénat de Kanjor. The prospect of elections was greeted with cheering and the waving of Republican flags.

As part of the agreemenrt between demonstration leaders and the Nationalist government Henri Moreau and other protest leaders will be released from state custody. On the steps of the prison Moreau announced his intention to run for election as Grand Commandeur and if elected he would dismantle the Nationalist state, replacing it with a Republic. The Movement for a Citizen's Republic will be reformed as the Parti Républicain in order to contest next month's elections.
