Federal Union Victorious in Terravision Song Contest
Controversial entry from New Endralon/Kizenia narrowly successful in politically charged contest

Sigrid Lauritzen was notable for more than just her voice

On a highly charged night in the Kalistani capital of Kaliburg, Elena Ulanova and Bogdan Grasu collected over five hundred points to secure victory for New Endralon/Kizenia in the Terravision song contest. Ulanova and Grasu overcame Kazulian entry Sigrid Lauritzen by a meagre eight points on the night, to ensure their success. Nevertheless, their triumph was mired in controversy due to the subject matter of their winning song. Entitled 'Better Times to Come', the ballad tells the story of a young man involved in the Trigunian invasion during the Great War and explores his emotions throughout. Detailing his pride at laying down his life for his country and his desire to build a better future for his children, it provoked fury and condemnation from the Trigunian press; they claim they were portrayed unfairly.

Vova Shlykov was unimpressed with the coverage of his performance

Trigunia's own entry Vova Shlykov finished fourth and received a maximum twelve points from four nations, among them (unsurprisingly) last year's winners Kalistan, yet Shlykov himself went on to claim that he was at a disadvantage due to the international perception of his homeland. His performance did, however, split opinion as he danced around the stage dressed in a space suit and rapped in his native tongue. In Luthori, well known for their cynicism about the contest, the commentator described it as 'sheer, unapologetic lunacy'. Further dispute arose over the fact that Elena Ulanova was born not in New Endralon/Kizenia but in Trigunia. Critics say she not have been eligible to compete for the Union.

Legendary Kalistani country singer Edmundo Leguizamo is a Terravision veteran

Opening the night was Vishal Jhutti- grandson of megastar Bananti MC- with a performance of his winning entry from last year. Unfortunately for him, his compatriot was unable to repeat his success and Kalistan ended up finishing second bottom. Edmundo Leguizamo was actually representing the United Republic for the third time, having won the contest over two decades ago. Before any of the acts could peform, there was a parade of all thirty competing nation's flags.

Friend or Foe were left wishing they had as much vocal ability as they did hairspray

Other notable performances included Kirlawan pop duo Friend or Foe, praised for their eye-catching outfits but finishing outside the top twenty in the end, and an outlandish Vanukean yodeller who managed to find a costume even crazier than his musical performance. In spite of the expected left of field acts, many viewers were impressed by the standard of the competition this year and television viewing figures once again broke the previous year's record. There were also the usual accusations of political voting; Istalia finished in last place but still managed to pull in twelve points from Baltusia. With all that said, Terravision undoubtedly remains one of the planet's most treasured institutions.

Oddly Not Attacking Anybody, Tirza Sommer Says She "Liked The Winner" Of Terravision

Image
Above: Dorvish entrant Lisa Ussenberger came 13th with the song 'Not Gonna Surrender'

In an oddly non-threatening comment, Tirza Sommer said she liked the winner of Terravision. Apparently a classical soul and rock fan, Sommer also said she was 'a bit dissapointed' that the Dorvish entry, Lisa Ussenberger, only managed 13th. Dorvik sent a ballad which did well with juries but got only 30 points from the televote. Notably, they got 1 point from the Trigunian jury - which was seen as very odd considering recent scandals.

Trigunia to boycott next Terravision Song Contest in protest at Better Times to Come

Trigunia's official state television broadcaster, the Trigunian Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) has announced Trigunia will not be participating in the next Terravision Song Contest, which is expected to be held in Cetatea Albă in New Endralon/Kizenia (by tradition the contest is hosted by the country which won the previous contest). This is in protest at the recent win for New Endralon/Kizenia's entry, Better Times to Come by Elena Ulanova and Bogdan Grasu, which touched on the subject of the invasion of Trigunia during the Great War - a sore point for many Trigunians.

TBC executives are believed to have been very reluctant to boycott the competition, but they relented under the weight of a a massive public outcry spearheaded by the popular media, as well as strong political pressure, especially from Culture Minister Arseniy Yevgenievich.

Vova Shlykov, who represented Trigunia in the recent competition, said he was "very disappointed by this news" and said he had been hoping to represent Trigunia in Cetatea Albă.

The bedroom scene from last night's special 1 hour late-night episode of Professor What

Meanwhile, a special late-night episode of Trigunia's Professor What TV show has been aired in which Bogdan Grasu, depicted as a giant wasp, breaks into a Trigunian woman's bedroom and attempts to rape her. Fortunately, Professor What saves the day by leaping out of her wardrobe, where he had been concealed, and then overwhelming the intruder using a can of super-powered alien insecticide.

Elena Ulanova as the seductive "wasp woman"

In the same episode, Elena Ulanova is presented as a highly-sexed Trigunian woman who becomes a spy for the New Endralonians (depicted as giant wasps), and in return, receives the ability to transform into a giant wasp like them. She spends much of the episode seducing Trigunian men, mating them and then devouring them. Finally she is defeated after Tsar Nikolay uses his mystic ancestral powers to command an asteroid to hurtle down from outer space and squash her.

The episode has attracted great controversy, not only because of its perceived offensiveness to this year's Terravision winners, but because Professor What has a large following of children - many of whom, it is feared, will end up watching the episode, even though it was shown late at night and with warnings beforehand that it was only suitable for adults.
