Weinsedorf Bonfire Night (Dorvik)

It's that time of year again. The Weinsedorf Bonfire Society is about to host its Terra-famous "Bonfire Night", featuring lots of traditional costumes, dancing, music, fireworks, a bonfire and...and of course the great event at the culmination of the evening, where somebody who is not particularly popular finds himself or herself chucked on the bonfire and incinerated. In effigy, of course.

According to tradition, Weinsedorf Bonfire Night began as a pagan ritual which gave local people an opportunity to human sacrifice village elders perceived to be abusing their authority. However, most serious historians dismiss this as just a legend, since the historical record includes no references to the event before the mid-1700s.

Nevertheless, even if usually nobody gets murdered, Weinsedorf Bonfire Night does have a reputation for being a rowdy affair. So much so that the event has not been held for the last 6 years, because the last time it took place, it ended in a lot of trouble, with fighting, rioting, property being damaged and a lot of general drunken behaviour.

Getting permission for the event to go ahead again took a lot of work. Hagen Kleid, Secretary of the Weinsedorf Bonfire Society, explains:

We were absolutely determined that the relaunched Bonfire Night would be a success, with none of the problems we have had before. We have worked closely with the city council and with the police, and I really want to thank both of them for the co-operation they've given us - they've been tremendous. The Bonfire Society will be providing stewards on the night, and there will also be a strong police presence as well, to keep everything under control. We have agreed that the Bonfire Society will pay a fee to the police, for the cost of policing the event. This will be paid out of the money we make from entry fees and other sources. We are very confident this is going to be a really good night for everybody involved, and I hope as many people as possible will come.

There is always controversy and debate on the subject of which public figure should be chosen to be burned in effigy. The decision is made by a vote at a meeting of the Bonfire Society's paid-up members, which is traditionally held at the Great Weinsedorf City Inn, about a week before Bonfire Night takes place.

So far, the nominated candidates include:

- Arch-Patriarch Angelicus, head of the Aurorian Patriarchal Church.

- Hans Gluck, recently-deceased former leader of the semi-fascist National Party, who also served as Defence Minister and Foreign Minister. The Bonfire Society's chairman tried to exclude Gluck's name from the list of candidates, given how recent his death is, but he was outvoted by the others on the organising committee.

- Andre Gramlich, CEO of the car manufacturer Synergie, who sacked 323 striking workers.

- Sally Gretchen, who is now serving her second term as President of Dorvik.

- Nishat Al-Hasim, former "Comrade Chairman" of the Communist Construction Worker's Co-operatiive Union, now wanted by police on a series of charges relating to his organisation's criminal bungling of the infamous Hauzenwald housing estate project.

- Heiko Herzfeld, Governor of Kordusia, widely believed to have seriously mismanaged the affairs of the provincial administration, to the extent it was unable to afford to pay its bills and faced a general strike by its own employees.

- Jakob Neuberger, CEO of Herman Heinz, who closed a food processing plant in Dorvik and relocated it to Kirlawa, at the cost of over 1200 Dorvish jobs.

- Leopold Nimitz, brutal and bloodthirsty Hulstrian dictator.

- Friedrich Pfeiffer, the controversial and outspoken Deputy General Secretary of the Dorvish Communist Party.

- Salvadore Puddu, the Istalian Ambassador to the World Congress, who outraged Dorvik's populist right-wing press by appearing to support some of the Dorvish Communist Party's criticisms of the Dorvish government.

- Psy Scott, President, CEO, and Sole Proprietor of the Hyperion Corporation, who has earned a notorious reputation for his alleged "Corporate Takeover" of the nation of Dalibor.

- Jan-Henrik Schwartz, leader of the sinister and shadowy Children of the Spirit cult group.

- Malgus Thaller, the former Kalopian dictator who dramatically escaped from jail in Dorvik.

OOC: Please feel free to use this thread to discuss (either OOCly or ICly) which in-game character should be burned in effigy. But bear in mind the Weinsedorf Bonfire Society members are Dorvish citizens, so non-Dorvish candidates would be unlikely to receive many votes unless they are particularly well-known and notorious. I'm planning to RP the election etc. on RL Bonfire Night (ie. RL time November 5th).

OOC: I doubt that in Largonia it'll go down well burning Sally Gretchen (who's from there) or Jan-Henrik Schwartz (who leads one of the main religions there). That can mean that you do and then we RP a lot of anger of it.

OOC: Good points, and yes, those ones could be interesting!

Weinsedorf Bonfire Society Committee vetoes Prophet Ahmad nomination

Image

An attempt to enter the Prophet Ahmad as a candidate to be burned in effigy has been blocked by the Weinsedorf Bonfire Society Committee, who explained they wanted to keep the event "good-humoured" and feared the burning of the Prophet Ahmad, the central figure in the Ahmadi religion, would be "hurtful and divisive".

The decision has been criticised both by some secularists, who feel religion should be fair game for mockery, and also by some Aurorians and followers of Children of the Spirit, who feel it is unfair that their religious leaders have been entered as candidates, but Ahmadism is being given "special treatment".

Paulus Weingartner added to candidates list

Paulus Weingartner has been nominated as a candidate to be burned in effigy on Bonfire Night. It is believed he was nominated by a small number of Communist Party supporters, resentful of the way he left the party in order to form his breakaway group, the Social Democratic Union.

Dorvish Hedgehog Society call for ban on Weinsedorf Bonfire Night

Image

The Dorvish Hedgehog Society has written a letter to President Sally Gretchen, asking her to pass new laws restricting and regulating bonfires, to prevent the "cruel, barbarous and completely unnecessary deaths of hedgehogs". In particular, the Society called for the traditional Weinsedorf Bonfire Night to be "outlawed", because "we know from experience that dozens of hedgehogs die terrible deaths from that every year, and despite the promises they give year after year, the organisers don't take even the most basic precautions to avoid this happening". The Society also pointed out that in a survey of Weinsedorf residents carried out by the city council, "56% were in favour of reintroducing Bonfire Night and 44% against, which is hardly an overwhelming mandate for such a big and disruptive event".

Hagen Kleid, Secretary of the Weinsedorf Bonfire Society, responded:

We are going to take extra precautions this year, to reduce the risk of hedgehogs being harmed. The bonfire material will be stored in a different location to where the bonfire finally takes place, and it shall be surrounded by chicken mesh wire, to prevent any small animals from getting inside.

Nationale Partei: Burning Hans Gluck Would Be Disgusting

"Burning such a recently deceased figure, assassinated in cold blood... I mean it would be utterly disgraceful. Disgusting," said leader Anna Strauss. "We will not stand for it. Whoever put that on the list should be ashamed."

"I would riot," said one rowdy NP supporter today. "I'd go and I'd burn down the whole thing." Anna Strauss said this is not encouraged, and does not stand for the party's values. Still, it seems anger would be likely should Hans Gluck get thrown on the fire.
I go by Ashley now and use she/her pronouns. This is a really old account, I don’t play now.

I was a mod in classic for a bit, then I helped make Marcapada and WM there for a while. As of 2020 I’m co-ordinating Pachapay’s development.

Bonfire Secretary to "ask" committee to review Hans Gluck candidacy

Hagen Kleid, Secretary of the Weinsedorf Bonfire Society, has said he will "ask" the Weinsedorf Bonfire Night Committee to "review whether it is appropriate for Hans Gluck to remain on the list of candidates to be burned in effigy on Bonfire Night".

The move follows widespread public disapproval of Gluck's inclusion on the list, given that his death was so recent, and in tragic circumstances involving suspected poisoning. Kleid personally voted against Gluck's candidacy, but was outvoted by 7 to 5 on the committee. There is now a parliamentary motion being debated on the matter.

Right-wing activists within Weinsedorf Bonfire Society have responded to the Gluck controversy by making several nominations of their own which they expected to be particularly offensive to the political left. These included Annika Hoch, the peace campaigner who was shot whilst protesting at a military base, and Zhang Ming, the rebel Proletarian Liberation Front leader in Dalibor, who was recently assassinated by state security forces. The committee rejected both of these nominations, both on the grounds that the nominees only passed away very recently. This predictably provoked accusations of double standards, since Gluck is also recently deceased. However, the committee did agree to accept a nomination for Karlstein Metz, the philosopher, political scientist and economist widely regarded as the intellectual father of communism.

It remains to be seen whether the committee will take heed of the calls to remove Gluck from the list. The secretary is desperate for the event to be a success and is keen to steer away from controversy, but the committee he is having to work with has a reputation for jealously guarding its independence and being occasionally provocative. One sign of this is that within hours of making her complaint about Gluck, National Party leader Anna Strauss found herself added as a candidate to the list by the committee itself. As with the Gluck nomination, this was objected to by Hagen Kleid, the secretary, but he was outvoted.

To recap, the candidates so far are:

- Karlstein Metz, widely regarded as the intellectual father of communism.

- Anna Strauss, leader of the National Party.

- Malgus Thaller, the former Kalopian dictator who dramatically escaped from jail in Dorvik.

- Paulus Weingartner, leader of the Social Democratic Union.

Weinsedorf Bonfire Night burns Leopold Nimitz in effigy

Image
Incinerating the last remains of the Nimitz effifgy

Hulstrian tyrant Leopold Nimitz has been burned in effigy at the relaunched Weinsedorf Bonfire Night, which turned out to be a very successful evening for the organisers, with tens of thousands of people attending, plenty of money raised and - perhaps most important of all to them - very few injuries or arrests.

Image
Nimitz feeling the strain, as he comes under growing international pressure over the conduct of his brutal regime

Bonfire Society members voted for Nimitz by a large margin. Of 423 votes cast, Nimitz received 213, more than half of the total. Heiko Herzfed, the recently-jailed former Governor of Kordusia, came second with 81 votes, and Ada von Hertz, Dorvik's controversial Ambassador to the World Congress, came 3rd with 76 votes.

Desideria Lehrer posing as a naked Leopold Nimitz

Communist activist Desideria Lehrer was arrested for making her face up to make herself look like Leopold Nimitz, and then prancing around in the street naked. She was later released with a caution and a small fine.

Much controversy was caused by the inclusion on the candidates list of Hans Gluck, the recently-deceased former National Party leader. In the end, he was kept on the candidates list, but received only 9 votes, well behind Nimitz.

Angry South burns Nimitz and Aswalt side-by-side

Image

By popular demand, Hulstrian tyrant Leopold Nimitz (for the second time) and Dorvish President Theodore Aswalt have been burned in effigy at Weinsedorf Bonfire Night. They were thrown into the bonfire together, in an act which symbolised much of the South's contempt for an increasingly unpopular President who earned notoriety for his heavy-handed tactics in crushing rebellion in the southern states of Largonia and Miktar. A number of placards were seen at the event bearing placards with slogans such as "Nimitz, Aswalt - they're both the same", "Death to Dictators" and "Let the South be Free".
