Has Tsitohery fled the country?

A military helicopter has been sighted leaving Government House, fuelling rumours that Prime Minister Tombovelo Tsitohery has taken up an offer from the military to resign from office and leave the country peacefully. There are rumours he could be heading towards Temania, Noumonde's neighbour.

TSITOHERY AND BERENGAR DEAD
General Blanchard addresses the nation

General Blanchard has addressed the Noumonde people on national television and radio, justifying his coup by arguing "the traditional, Canrillaise values upon which Noumonde's civilisation is based needed to be defended from traitors and extremists" and that "the King was being coerced and manipulated by evil ministers and advisers".

Minutes after the General had finished speaking, King Norbert then addressed the people, looking visibly haggard and shaken. He confirmed that he had suspended Parliament and appointed General Blanchard Prime Minister "as a patriotic act, for the good of the country" and urged the Noumonde people to "obey those who rightfully rule over you". He appealed, in particular, to Noumonde's "friends overseas, particularly our Canrillaise friends" to "recognise my new government and work with it for the benefit of my people and of the world".

After the King's short speech, General Blanchard then hosted a press conference with journalists. Under questioning, he stated the military had moved in to action because it believed the appointment of Leon Cormier as National Party leader and Deputy Prime Minister was "the final straw" that convinced them the power-sharing government could no longer protect "Canrillaise civilisation in Noumonde". He explained that the government tried to head-off the risk of a military rebellion by attempting to replace him with his deputy Chief of Staff, Alceste Berengar.

The majority of the army went along with the coup, he claimed, but a small faction, effectively led by Prime Minister Tombovelo Tsitohery and General Alceste Berengar, resisted. However, this rebellion was "soon crushed" and both Tsitohery and Berengar lost their lives in the fighting.

Blanchard also confirmed that a number of leading politicians are under house arrest, "both for the stability of the country and for their own personal safety".

What role did the King play in the coup?

Speculation is rife about what role, if any, King Norbert played during the day's events. General Blanchard pointedly refused to answer such questions at the press conference.

Most inside sources and royal observers say the King did not initiate the coup, but that in the key moments he did not really make any effort to stop it either. Sources close to the deceased Tsitohery are claiming that if the King had picked up the phone and had conversations with a few key people, then he might have been able to stop the coup in its tracks.

Others, though, argue that he was overwhelmed by events and had little real choice but to go along with General Blanchard's demands.

Blanchard closes land reform program

General Blanchard has announced the closure of the Noumonde Land Redistribution Commission, which was established under the terms of the power-sharing agreement in order to redistribute land to landless Malgy (OOC: Madagascans).

Blanchard said the land reform program "has already achieved its objectives" and that "public spending needs to be refocused on other priorities".

Feminists denounce new "sexist" Paiwand Gū 925 mobile phone

Image

The Association des Femmes Canrillaise (Canrillaise Women's Association) based in Nouville has hit out at the new mobile phone released by Paiwand Electronics in Aldegar, arguing that the screens are too big to be comfortable for women to use. "Women's hands are on average an inch shorter than men's, but companies like Paiwand won't release a smaller model - they expect us to struggle with these man-sized screens," they complained, adding that Paiwand should "listen more to their female customers" and "work to ensure more women are represented at management and board level".

General Blanchard promises Malgy Majority Rule "within the next 400 years"

Image
General Remy Blanchard

Amidst rising criticism both at home and abroad of the military coup and the rescinding of the Canrillaise-Malgy power-sharing agreement, General Blanchard has attempted to reach out to his opponents by offering his "confident promise that Malgy (OOC: Madagascan) Majority Rule will become a reality within the next 400 years".

He said "the Malgy have made enormous progress under Canrillaise (OOC: French) tutelage" but warned that "before Malgy Majority Rule can happen, the Malgy will first need to have reached a level of civilisation that is closer to that of the Canrillaise, because otherwise, say if you brought in Malgy majority rule tomorrow and turned Noumonde into Malgyland, it would mean the collapse of civilisation here for everybody, and that would have the most devastating consequences, not only for the Canrillaise but for our Malgy as well, and we are very protective of and concerned about the welfare of our Malgy because they need our guidance and help".

He also denied a journalist's suggestion that the Malgy in Noumonde are "unhappy", insisting "Here in Noumonde we have the happiest Esinsindus (OOC: Africans) in the world, there is no better place for an Esinsindu to be than Noumonde" and arguing that "the only Esinsindus in Noumonde who are unhappy are this tiny, tiny group of political agitators, and those people do not represent the overwhelming majority of Esinsindus who really do not care about politics at all but just want to get on with their lives as they are doing quite happily at the moment".

Lastly, he appealed directly to "the leaders of other countries, particularly to our Canrillaise brothers and sisters, to understand the reality of the situation Noumonde is in today, and to think carefully about whether they would really be doing anything at all different if the positions were reversed, and they were the ones in the situation we are in". He added to that "it is easy to take civilisation for granted when you are living in a society where its position is not as precarious as it is in ours".

General Blanchard orders TPRA out of Noumonde

Image
TPRA's Noumonde Director of Operations, Agatha Reichart

General Remy Blanchard has ordered the Terran Poverty Relief Association (TPRA) to cease all of its activities in Noumonde and for all of its employees to leave the country immediately. He accused the aid organisation of "stirring up the natives with unhealthy ideas" and of having "dangerous fixations with extreme interpretations of concepts such as social justice and racial equality".

TPRA has condemned the moved and called on the international community to put pressure on the Noumonde government to "open Noumonde up to aid agencies and human rights monitors".

General Blanchard announces Canrillaise Immigration Scheme

Noumonde's Prime Minister, General Remy Blanchard, today unveiled his Programme d'Immigration Canrillaise (Canrillaise Immigration Scheme), designed to encourage Canrillaise (OOC: French) immigration into Noumonde, particularly from the main Canrillaise nations, Alduria, Kanjor, Lourene and Rildanor.

Under the scheme, Canrillaise from overseas will be encouraged to immigrate to Noumonde with offers of public sector jobs, bargain mortgages, cheap loans and cheap land. Most controversially, much of the land that is now being offered for cheap prices to Canrillaise immigrants was originally intended for reallocation to landless Malgy (OOC: Madagascan) under the land redistribution scheme, which has now been wound up.

Political experts believe this move is designed to help the regime in two ways. Firstly, by helping to shore up the Canrillaise position in Noumonde by increasing the Canrillaise population. Secondly, it is hoped the new scheme will increase Noumonde's popularity in the Canrillaise world community, and therefore make it more politically difficult for Canrillaise governments to oppose Noumonde's regime too strongly. Professor Marie-Louise Bernier, a Noumon political scientist now living in Alduria, has commented:

It could be that General Blanchard has pulled off a political masterstroke with this. What you have to bear in mind is that this will have a direct impact on a lot of people in the Big Four Canrillaise countries. There will be people who want to take up these opportunities to go to Noumonde, or at least are thinking of taking up these opportunities in the future. Or even if they are not interested themselves, they will probably know someone - a family member, maybe - who wants to take up the scheme, or is considering taking up the scheme.

This is surely going to have an impact on the politicians, because they will not want to upset these voters. But will it have a decisive impact on the politicians? Would it be enough to persuade them not to impose sanctions on Noumonde, or even not to engage in actual military action? Who knows? It all depends on whether they have the political will to do whatever it is they believe they ought to do.

General Blanchard sends dwarf wrestlers on goodwill tour of Canrillaise nations

In another move designed to bolster his support in the Canrillaise world, the General has paid the Fédération de Lutte Naine (Dwarf Wrestling Federation) to embark on a "goodwill tour" of Alduria, Kanjor, Lourenne and Rildanor. The dwarf wrestlers will be putting on free wrestling shows and appearing at publicity events whilst acting as "ambassadors of the Noumon people, their King and their legitimate government".

General Blanchard is known to be a big personal fan of dwarf wrestling, and he hopes the novelty and spectacle of the performances will wow the international Canrillaise public and give them a more favourable impression of his country and his regime.

Desperate Blanchard begs "King Julien XIII" for help

According to leaked reports, Noumonde's military leader, General Remy Blanchard, has contacted the entertainer "King Julien XIII", offering him full clemency in regards to the charges against him if he will agree to accept a position as an "international goodwill ambassador" promoting the image of Noumonde's military regime abroad. He has been offered an extremely remunerative salary, along with the offer of the use of a large mansion just outside Nouville, replete with an extensive garden, a swimming pool, 5 tennis courts and 9 Malgy (OOC: Madagascan) maids.

General Blanchard, who is known to have little expertise or experience in the areas of international diplomacy and international image-building, is believed to be becoming increasingly desperate to do anything he can to discourage international moves against his government, such as those recently threatened by Kanjor.
