Jacque St. Pierre to chair Noumon peace talks

General Fabien Leroux, the Federation-appointed Governor of Noumonde, has named New Alduria's Jacque St. Pierre as chairman of the upcoming Constitutional Convention, saying St. Pierre is "just the man we need" and that "we really appreciate having someone who knows this continent [Temania] really well involved in the process".

The leaders of Noumonde's 4 main political parties responded positively to the announcement, with the exception of Canrillaise Front's Count Henri Beaumanoir, who criticised the appointment as "biased" and suggested St. Pierre "got the job over the heads of far more qualified Canrillaise candidates purely on the basis that he has Malgy blood and black skin". He also called on Leroux to appoint a Canrillaise deputy chair in order to "look after St. Pierre and show him what to do".

Androkae: Malgy will never accept "power-sharing" again

Campaigning for "Full Democracy" and against "power-sharing" has been a key tenet of Alliance leader Masoandro Androkae's political platform ever since he was first elected to the party leadership. Last night, however, he gave his most uncompromising and unambiguous speech on the issue so far, declaring "the Malgy people will never again accept power-sharing" and that "it would be quite impossible for any Malgy leader, either myself or anyone else, to agree to power-sharing - that is simply not a doable option, and as far as we are concerned, that is not an option that is even remotely on the table". He went on to argue that "no political arrangement which gives a veto the privileged minority can be trusted to deliver justice for the majority who are deprived and oppressed".

This is likely to make the challenge facing Jacque St. Pierre, the peace talks chair, even more difficult, since there is widespread hostility in the Canrillaise community to "Malgy Majority Rule".

Some commentators are suggesting Androkae is taking this stance partly in order to stem the leakage of popular support from the Alliance to the newly-formed Malgy People's Party, which some Malgy see as a more authentic and representative voice of their community.

Count Henri Beaumanoir, the leader of the hard-line Canrillaise Front, accused Androkae of "in effect, war-mongering" and warned the Constitutional Convention "risks degenerating into a sham, where the Canrillaise are completely sold out". Despite this, he is resisting pressure from some in his party to boycott the talks, insisting "we will take our seat at the table and we will fight for our cause to the end".

"Feely Finger" phone set to take mobile market by storm

Image

A start-up company called the Feely Finger Mobile Phone Company (FFMPC) has begun release of a new mobile phone which features a "feely finger" robotic appendage which can crawl across the desk, waggle for attention, stroke its owner on the hand and be used as an interface to control apps and games.

The company is primarily based in Argennes in Alduria, but some of the parts for the new new device - including the "feely finger" - will be manufactured in factories across Noumonde.

General Fabien Leroux, the Federation-appointed Governor of Noumonde, has praised the project as "great news for jobs and economic development in Noumonde" and "a sure sign that the international business community are becoming increasingly confident about Noumonde's future".

The Alliance and the National Party have both issued statements welcoming the development. Others, however, are less enthusiastic. Count Henri Beaumanoir, leader of the hardline Canrillaise Front, warned "the concept of this device is nonsensical and pie-in-the-sky - I seriously don't think it is going to take off, because there just isn't the market for it". He also criticised Leroux for offering FFMPC special tax incentives and subsidies in order to set up production facilities in Noumonde, arguing "the government should not get involved with wasting public money trying to pick winners; their aim should be to keep taxes as low as possible and then leave everything to the free market".

Barijaona Rahantasoa, the leader of the Malgy People's Party, has described mobile phones as "completely unnecessary and a serious threat to our traditional Malgy village way of life", vowing his party will impose a heavy "Mobile Phone Tax" if it comes to power.

The Association des Femmes Canrillaise (Canrillaise Women's Association) has warned the "feely finger" could be used to "sexually groom and abuse vulnerable girls and women" and demanded the government "ban this sinister device immediately". They also complained that the screens for the new device are too big to be comfortable for women to use, and that this is "sexist" - a complaint they have previously made about other mobile phone models as well.

Canrillaise Liberation Army strikes Nouville

The Canrillaise Liberation Army, a hardline Canrillaise militia group believed to have connections with Action Canrillaise International, has claimed responsibility for two explosions that took place today in Nouville.

The first hit a Federation army barracks, killing 3 people and injuring 7. Later in the day, an explosion occurred at an Alliance election rally, killing 2 people and injuring 9.

Action Canrillaise International has denied being responsible for the attack and has also denied being connected to the Canrillaise Liberation Army, although most of the intelligence community is believed to doubt this. They did, however, pointedly refuse to condemn the attacks, claiming they were "a product of the liberal neo-imperialist attitudes of the Federation invaders" and that "this is likely to continue for so long as the oppression of the Canrillaise people in Noumonde continues".

The attacks have been widely condemned by all of the main political parties in Noumonde. However, opinion is split over what approach to take to Action Canrillaise International. The Malgy parties are calling for it to be outlawed on the grounds of its alleged links to terrorism, whereas the Canrillaise parties are urging caution in this regard, insisting on more hard evidence before any such decision is taken.

NOUMONDE GOES TO THE POLLS; row breaks out over "Lakshmi" votes

Image

Noumonde has begun voting today in elections for the Constitutional Convention.

Image
Lakshmi's symbol

Controversy has already broken out, with election agents from the Malgy People's Party (MPP) arguing ballot papers which have simply been marked "Lakshmi" or scribbled with Lakshmi's symbol should be counted as votes for the MPP, whilst the Chief Returning Officer is insisting on counting them as "spoilt" ballots. MPP leader Barijaona Rahantasoa has complained bitterly about this, saying:

The people who wrote "Lakshmi" or Lakshmi's symbol on their ballot papers clearly intended to vote for the Malgy People's Party - everybody knows that, there can be no doubt. By refusing to count these votes, the Federation authorities, and the Noumonde Electoral Commission in particular, are showing their racist and neo-imperialist attitude to the Malgy people. In many parts of Noumonde, people are not really used to democracy here - voting was not widespread in the past, because people knew it was pointless, and we have not had an election in years because of the dictatorship. What these people are doing is denying the Malgy people their right to democratically elect their representatives.

Several leading figures in the MPP have called for the party to boycott the Constitutional Convention in protest, but according to our sources, those close to Rahantsoa believe he is unlikely to do this. However, the frustration over the conduct of the election may make it more difficult for moderates within the MPP to persuade the party to make concessions when it comes to the negotiations.

BREAKING NEWS: Election results in, Alliance celebrates slim majority

Election results for Noumonde's 100-member Constitutional Convention are now in, and the results are as follows:

Alliance for Progress - 51 seats
National Party - 23 seats
Malgy People's Party - 17 seats
Canrillaise Front - 11 seats

As expected, the leading Malgy and Canrillaise parties, the Alliance and the National Party respectively, have lost some ground to the two new parties, although they remain the largest parties in their respective communities.

As usual, turnout was higher amongst Canrillaise than Malgy voters, which is party why the National Party and the Canrillaise Front did as well as they did.

The Malgy People's Party (MPP) performed less strongly than anticipated. This was at least partly due to the phenomenon whereby some of the party's supporters wrote "Lakshmi" or scrawled Lakshmi's symbol on the ballot papers, rather than crossing the box for "Malgy People's Party". MPP activists are still bitterly protesting about this, and there is an MPP demonstration currently going on outside the Noumonde Electoral Commission's headquarters in Nouville.

Topsy shocks art world with auction paper-shredding stunt

The elusive street artist known as "Topsy" has astounded bidders at an elite auction house in Nouville by arranging for his painting, titled "The Red Balloon With The Girl", to be shredded immediately after it had been auctioned off for 1 million Noumos.

Count Henri Beaumanoir, the leader of the hard-line Canrillaise Front, has condemned the stunt as "culturally and morally degenerate - just like most of the so-called art produced by Topsy and his ilk". Beaumanoir also promised that a future Canrillaise Front government would end all public subsidies to "anything that even vaguely resembles so-called modern art".

King Julien XIII accuses Bellevue-sur-Mer organisers of vote-rigging

Image
The rightful king (left) with his faithful Canrillaise deputy Mortimer "Mort" Bonhomme (right)

NOUVILLE — His Royal Highness the illustrious King Julien XIII, self-proclaimed Lord of the Lemurs,
Julakoto-on-Terra, etc., etc. has accused Noumons Abroad, organisers of Bellevue-sur-Mer Bonfire Night, of
rigging the vote to determine whose effigy should be burned.

In a press conference held at the 5-star King Julien X Hotel in central Nouville the rightful king announced an
enquiry, which he said would "prove the corruption of Noumons Abroad, which is nothing more than a Canrillaise
supremacist organisation that will stop at nothing to ensure the people cannot choose me."

The rightful king noted that "it is plainly obvious the vote was rigged, after all, nobody knows who Manosindus von
Thaller, so why would they vote for him?".

Noumonde Constitutional Convention: Day One - Beaumanoir hogs the limelight

The Constitutional Convention met briefly today, for its inaugural session. General Fabien Leroux, the Federation-appointed Governor of Noumonde, spoke first, thanking the representatives for "coming together for the good of the country" and warning them that "a heavy responsibility lies on our shoulders" and that "we owe it to the people of Noumonde to prepare the way for a peaceful and successful future". He then introduced the chairman of the Convention, Jacque St. Pierre, who was clapped enthusiastically by the Alliance and Malgy People's Party representatives, clapped politely but less enthusiastically by the National Party representatives, and ignored with stony silence by the Canrillaise Front representatives.

Each of the party leaders then stood up, to give a short speech. The first three speeches were unremarkable and passed off without comment, but the final speech - by Canrillaise Front leader Count Henri Beaumanoir - is expected to dominate newspaper headlines tomorrow.

The first drama came when, moments after the Count had gotten to his feet, Toavina Ratsimbazafy, a young female representative from the Malgy People's Party, leapt up and wrestled him to the ground, announcing she was performing a "citizen's arrest" and was "arresting this war criminal for the atrocities he committed under the regime of the dictator General Blanchard". She was then restrained by security guards and escorted from the building. Convention chairman Jacque St. Pierre later announced that he had issued Ratsimbazafy with a "formal warning" and suspended her from Convention sittings for the next 4 days.

When Count Henri Beaumanoir got to his feet again and began speaking, he provoked uproar amongst the Malgy representatives with his diatribe about the Malgy "not being developed enough yet to take over the reins of government". When an Alliance representative asked him whether he thought there could be "any room for compromise", Beaumanoir adopted a belligerent and intransigent position, accusing the Malgy political leaders of "manipulating and misrepresenting the ignorant and uneducated Malgy who voted for them". Furthermore, he insisted that any peace deal must be along the lines suggested by the former dictator, General Blanchard. These included a proposal to move towards "Full Democracy" over a 400 year transition period, and an alternative proposal to create a new state in the middle of Valruzia called "Valgyland" and then encourage Noumonde's Malgy to relocate there.
